  • Are you Too old to Tattoo In 2023?
This is a question I get asked a lot and the answer is much more in- depth than you might actually realise. In this video I discuss the pressures of approaching that tattoo studio you might not feel like entering because you feel like you're too old to become a tattooist for a tattoo apprenticeship. I also share with you how old I was when I became a tattooist and opened my first tattoo studio.

I started tattooing at 60! And now have been happily tattooing for 3 years in a shop in the netherlands, you are never to old to learn something new! The shopowner did not look at my age, just at my skill!

Also, I would like to add that people like Jono help a lot with quality video's and great advice, when you are starting out and are totally clueless about tattooing! (like I was) these video's help hugely in opening up a hidden world and slowly things become less mysterious and more doable! So take your time to watch all the advice you can get, and thank you Jono!😊

Such a good timing. I’ve always wanted to tattoo professionally and after 20 years as a murals/streetart artist I decided last year to invest in a career and I don’t regret. There’s a lot of prejudice (ageism and so on) but since I’ve been in a similar branch I learned quickly how to overcome them and start my own journey. Thank you so much for your channel!

I started at age 33 but I have been doing art since I was 5 lol.
There are a lot of advantages starting a tattoo artist journey as an adult adult. One of them is that you will have an older person’s patience and focus. Tattooing is a lot of patience and focus. Also, in your 30s you understand there is always something new to learn about the world which is the same with tattooing. You will never stop learning new things about techniques and yourself

My advice would be to make some good examples on practice rubber, you can even get a whole silicone rubber forearm to tattoo on. Thats how I successfully got a spot in a shop, I just walked in with some good examples of my skill on rubber!Of course drawing skills are super important as well. There are heaps of good free tutorials on youtube! Good luck, I hope you succeed!

And yes I learned along time ago I would always push my friends that were into graffiti or into drawing into tattooing and the “artist” don’t last they do other stuff but then some people just wana tattoo so bad they usually get better and it’s really if you like doing it then you will succeed cuz it’s all just practice so if you enjoy it you as an example when I was younger like 16-19 I tatted alllot and learned a lot, yes tons of trash tattoos but I learned lol and now that I’m older no one wants me to just scribble on them so I am practing on plastic fake cheap skin and it’s ok but I am limiting myself to not even try a tattoo until I practice all summer and until I’m happy…. So way different than when I was young but wish me luck hahah and ima post my videos here so if anyone wants to see how bad I am lol literally like no joke I am bad….. but hopefully I’ll get better

Hey Jono, Thank you for another great video. I have been following you as well as a few other instructional RUclipsrs for almost the past 2 years, when I started to learn how to tattoo at the ripe old age of 59, after finally getting my first and second tattoo. while talking during my tattoo to the tattoo artist/owner that I got tattooed by, I was surprised to be told in order to get an apprenticeship I would need to already know how to tattoo before applying. If this advice is correct , then it puts me (61 yrs old) at a great disadvantage to a much younger person especially since young people generally have a much easier time finding friends willing to get tattooed. By the way, the reason for such a late start tattooing in life is because I was a funeral director/embalmer for over 20 years until I got hurt leaving me unable to continue in that field. Learning how to tattoo has given me a new lease on life , especially since it is all I can think of doing and enjoy each day. Thanks again! 🙏Poppy

Jono I recently came across this video post and thought this is such a good topic to cover. I am just knocking on the door of 60 years young and currently working with passion and training hard to perfect my tattoo skills, with a view to opening my own business in the not too distanced future, so thank you for getting into this topic and providing a great boost of encouragement. After starting out in life training as an illustrator and graphic artist I somehow veered off and using my skills as a singer and performer I somehow ended up as a very effective sales person! A passion for delivering amazing customer experiences then saw me spend the next 36 years as a trainer and presenter, and still going strong, I think. The challenge now is to find a way to transition into my real passion for art in the form of tattooing. So here’s to all the older artists and aspiring artists out there, what do we have on our side… commitment, determination, great work ethic, patience, a whole box full of life skills, a passion for people, care, and the knowledge that success comes from hard work. You are never too old to learn. Thanks Jono for being one of my online inspirations.

I’m a 29 year old artist outta Washington. And I just started back in August so I’m going into my 4th month. Anyways, after studying by just watching videos daily and trying to re teach myself how to draw(no formal art background what so ever) and although the drawing hasn’t come easy I have seriously picked up the machine skills super super fast. I’m already a month and a half into real skin and got a job as an apprentice at one of the better shops in my city let alone in my state. So stoked to see where my journey takes me!!! I know I know means that is old, but it’s absolutely terrifying to finally find your feet in an industry you’ve been working so hard and and make a super comfortable living and then try to jump to something new. But I’m so glad that I chose to do this because although I’m only doing it part time at the moment, I fully believe in myself to do it full-time and to be able to do something. I truly enjoy. Although I make a great living at my regular job, I don’t wanna break my body down before I’m 40 years old and I’m tired of spending night away from my family because I work 12 hour graveyard shifts, thank you so much for your videos brother, you’ve done a lot for people like me

Thank you so, so much for this.
I started my apprenticeship at 34 and have been in it a year, and it's been wonderful, but part of me sits here and goes, "Am I too old for this?" I struggle so much with self confidence, you're so right, and I absolutely felt like I didn't belong. On top of it, though, I was struggling with feelings of 'my time is running out, there's no point, I won't last long.'
I got lucky getting my apprenticeship on top of it all - my tattoo artist who is now my mentor asked to see my art and then asked to teach me after I'd talked about having wanted to learn when I was in highschool, and got talked out of it with the "You'll be a starving artist," mentality. Even though that happened? It doesn't help the feelings of doubt and inadequacy.
But you're right. It should be about letting the work speak for itself and not doubting myself about a number that doesn't matter to my mentor, to my clients, to the people who have been supporting me through all of it.
This has helped me feel so much better. On top of my apprenticeship your videos have been an incredible help and I always come back to reference them when I'm not in the studio. Thank you for everything you do for all of us.
