What causes this scene to occur? Do you have to choose to side with him and bring him the netherstones?
Actually, if you just hand him the netherstone, he decides you're not worth working with. You have to refuse to give it to him, but not break off the partnership. He respects people who hold their own and don't trust too easilly.

Yes; it functions as Karlach’s storyline ender. She gets to confront her abuser and come to terms with what is left of her life and how she wants to spend it.
For those of us with trauma, that’s something worth fighting for to the bitter end. Not all of us find the will to live again like she does after your fight with him. (Assuming you bring her to confront him)
