Gortash is an interesting villain and all, but I can't get over the fact that he looks like a Final Fantasy protagonist who's in their late 40s and is going through a midlife crisis.
He's a banenite. A lawful evil god. The same alignment as the Baatezu from Nine Hells. They are evil, but they are trustworthy, they will do exactly as the agreement was.
Considering we got oath of treachery paladin mod now, It is kinda fun role playing as a backstabber paladin if it benefit me. It make the bhaalspawn more villain then the game actual vilain.

Pre-orin Dark Urge must have been terrifying if the chosen of Bane was eager to work alongside them rather than as their leader, and an elder brain was WILLING to surrender the illithid empire to them
To be fair, Eldar Brain was 20 steps ahead and was likely waiting for "lesser" races (ones that arent Ghaik) to attempt to overthrow or defeat Gortash and Durge, so it could escape.

I honestly hate how dirty they did Gortash, killing him off no matter what even if you decide to work with him. Like, you get access to the gnomes as allies if you go against him, but absolutely nothing for siding with him. I feel like it wouldnt have been that hard for Gortash/The Steel Watch to be integrated as allies for an evil playthrough
I agree. He even attempts to spread rumors about you to taint your reputation in the city. He hardly tries to make himself seem like a trustworthy ally to you while expecting so much in return. And especially playing as Durge, it is a little disappointing. But after what he did to Karlach, maybe it makes sense. I'm guessing that "sharing his kingdom" bit was like a last resort kinda thing. He might've only actually done it IF he couldn't get rid of you.

Considering Half of act three was cut out (Upper city was suppose to allow you to meet Cazador as a political figure and potentially ally if you sacrificed Astorian AND you were suppose to be able to save Karlach and fix her heart) it goes without question that his story was cut off short.
he truly sees you as an equal when he proposes an alliance to you, and especially when he tests you to see if you stand up to him as his equal. Which is very interesting and adds a lot of depth to his character considering the Emperor, who claims you're his ally over and over again, does not.

it's really a pity, I'd love to see a different final fight and ending on an evil route where you get to rule the world side by side with Gortash. Just like the "secret" ending in Pathfinder:WOTR where you get to do a bunch of sidequests to earn the favor of Areelu Vortesh and ascend with her
In my playthrough I just started combat and before he had a chance to speak, and killed him, I heard literally zero voicelines from him, except perhaps the grunts of battle.
I don't understand how gortash got away with murdering everyone at his coronation because if you leave and come back the next day everyone there is dead.
SPOILERS (TL;DR) :Gortash used corruption, and blackmail, as well also as wits and magic to carry on his plan, (end of TL;DR) he investigated on every patriar of the city (basically the biggest authorities of every domain of the city, may it be commercial, military, political, etc...) You can actually read it in Gortash journal and notes scattered around the palaces and places he hanged out (Like the Iron Throne if i remember correctly) All of this makes sense - Baine is all about tyranny and oppression, political or not. Plus he had the tadpoles and, also if i remember correctly - he tadpoled much of the Patriars of the city, making them obedient puppets as he had control over the Absolute. So he got away because he had corrupted basically everyone, he isolated the patriars and commanded the City Watch and Banites to murder everyone as the upper levels of Wyrmrock was basically already a Black Keep of Bane since quasi-no flaming fists were present there. And in any way, even if the Flaming Fist had something to say, he had Archduke Ravenguard tadpoled into a gentle lapdog, and no one would go against him. The real power of Gortash is wits and fear, as a true Tyran, not his own power. The most powerful of the three, lore-wise, was certainly Ketheric Thorm hands down - excellent strategist, in control of himself, powerful in both magic and physical combat, knowledgeable, and over all of this - fucking invincible. (NIGHTSONG, SON) Orin was powerful, but she was raw and wild, had too much whims and liked murder a bit too much. Gortash had wits (outwitting Ketheric many times as we see through letters and in the cinematic in the end of ACT2) and political power.
Orin is definitely the weakest out of the chosen three, makes sense since she only got there by backstabbing the old durge. Ketheric has the most raw power and experience but he's also the most humane one, still having a soft spot for his wife and daughter after all these years of serving Myrkul. Gortash is all about calculation and control which makes him the perfect mastermind and ruler out of those three, a pity there's no evil ending where you get to rule with him in the end.

Ketheric is still the most frightening to me, because he hasn't got anything to lose - Myrkul granted him the return of his daughter, so, yeah, he had already accomplished his personal goals in a way. I'm even surprised that he hasn't killed Isobel by pure spite after Ketheric death.
The first character I played, I had already blown up the steel watch facility and freed the slaves at the Iron Throne before figuring out where his coronation was being held, Gortash was immediately hostile to me as well as Duke Ravenguard when I went into the coronation room, had to kill them all. Wyll wasn't too happy.
I guess there’s a reason for the coronation to be there right after you exit rivington but right before you enter baldurs gate… but then what’s the fun of crpg if you don’t do things out of the order and break the game :D

i managed to skip over ALL of act 3 gortash interactions by flying up and over the castle, talking to orin who i happened to run into inside the sewer and blowing up the steel foundry. 8-10 hours of side quest later i finally went inside the castle and everyone was hostile
To this day the funniest thing about Gotash is his description when you are on your way to the goblin came. The narrator said "A handsome younger male with a quick easy smile"...he looks like a bird lol. I do think he is an interesting villian but I keep thinking in my mind "girl he is not cute".
he manipulates the absolute to alter his appearance the posters he puts around are all drawn of him but younger, i assume he's trying to present himself that way
When I did this as the dark urge with Karlach in my party, his dialogue kinda broke (he voice lines stopped and his dialogue only mentioned me having one netherstone) and I started only being able to say [continue] until the screen went to black and he then brought up how it was time to be crowned the archduke. He never mentioned Orin at all. I’m not sure why, but the nether stone part of the conversation seemed to just not work. Interesting to see how it was supposed to be.
I had Karlach in my party to and killed Orin first (honestly just exploring and stumbled onto her.) and my dialogue was fine. I've had the "continue" glitch multiple times on different conversations. I think hitting continue selects whatever the first dialogue option is. Found that if you reload the save to before you started the conversation it seems to fix it.
he could definitely look better for a "young man with an easy smile", but i think he's a very well-written character and I wish I could actually ally with him through the end on an evil playthrough.
Righttt, i wish there was more we could do with that character in game, like an evil romance or an ally-ship on a full evil playthrough would be super cool!
Honestly, dial back his age by like 5 years and he'd become an anime bishoujo character with everyone fawning all over him. Hilariously, the Absolute description of him implies this.
the weapons you use really depend on your build/character/class, the Everburn Blade (flaming greatsword from cambion) you can get in the tutorial can carry you to the end of the game if you want
@@Local_commentor padlock is good but I'm a sorcadin enjoyer myself, getting to fly (storm sorc) pretty much whenever is too good to pass up, either that or draconic sorc for a little extra HP and eventually the elemental affinity is great too
I did every single other side quest in act 3 before doing this. Every one was dead just his army agro me when I came in without the steel watchers because I blew that other place up. It really kinda ruined the last act for me. If I would have realized I would have done this first. lol.
BG3 puts so much attention to details that it's painful to watch moments where it doesn't. Gortash talking about his masterplan in the miidle of great hall full of guests is so dumb
As soon as I saw the shimmering armor I wondered if you were also using the artificer mod. Gale as an artillerist, right? I absolutely love that mod and the artificer in general.

@@tomgola3 could do it that way too. But I like taking those off his corpse to use in harder fights. Once thrown, they will detonate in one turn so.... Rather use them on Orin or Raphael

I was afraid of advancing further because Orin would kidnap Halsin and kill Scratch 😢 (Gale is my husband and always in my party because he’s my only mage, Minthara is dead and I didn’t know you can recruit her, Lae’zel has max approval and some people say Orin kidnaps the one with lowest approval)
IT BROKE THE GAME. I killed Orin first and I blew up the factory. Then I skipped Gortash coronation and snuck into his bedroom through the roof (edit) and I killed Gortash. Game thought Ravenguard was at the coronation (but there wasn't one now) AND it thought Ravenguard was alive (because I did rescue him) and it thought Ravenguard was dead. Mizora showed up, with a "!" as did Wyll "!", but all they would say is, "What do you need?" I could not progress Wyll's story and I never found out anything about a dragon under the castle. Apparently they have since fixed this, but it absolutely soured me on a game that let's you play almost any way you want.
How do I attend coronation? When I first arrive to BG, Misoura said to go there and then Orin suggested to kill Gortash. However, all I could do is to destroy those mechanical guards and no way to go to coronation. No quest, no mark on the map and I discovered seemingly everything. So I went for the Orin, killed her, thinking that it would lead to Gortash but no, still no quest or any indication where to go, There was this gate near the teleport, but I couldn't go there became of earthquake knock-outs, and clear warning from the Emperor to not to go there. So how on earth would I progress to this point? I'm almost out of side-quests and can't proceed with the main storyline.
Gortash's coronation is not in Baldurs Gate. It is in Wyrm's Rock. The Palace like thing with dungeon underneath just before entering Baldur's Gate. You can just fast travel to Rivington or Wyrm's Rock. You missed it, I don't know how, but you did.
In order to visit coronation you have to take the stairs leading you on higher level of the building.. You can find said stairs literally in the first building after crossing the giant bridge. Stairs in the rooms on the left will lead you to prison. Stairs in the right will take you... Well up stairs.
Rivington has two sections. The first is where the refugees are. At the end of that path you meet some guards. If you go to jail you can escape from jail. You can also fight them and do some other stuff. Jail will lead you to Wyrm's Rock after you escape. You can travel to Wyrm's rock from Rivington after the hotels and bars and all that, if I remember correctly.
I missed this too. If you are about to head to the lower city you have gone too far. Head back to the covered passage way that was just past the drawbridge that lowered. Head into the eastern door way there into a room with a central door that leads to the "throne" room.
I think i broke my save, I saved Orin and the coronation for last and did every side quest including killing the dragon under the castle, then did the coronation and wyll just keeps saying we need to tell his father about killing the dragon at camp but his father just stands at the coronation room 🤦 also broke my oath by agreeing to work with gortash and the oath breaker won't come at long rest either 😭 gotta reload my save in front of the dragon room but I'm gonna lose 4 hrs of side quests 😵
Damn I’m so sorry to hear that : / did you go to the iron throne yet? You can still go after the coronation and Ravengard will be locked up there, once you rescue him you should be able to progress the dragon quest. Not sure what to do about oathbreaker tho
@@kirbothestabo it's alright I just went back to my older save I forgot I afk'd for like 3 hrs so I only Lost like an hr and a half, im caught up now and just killed Orin, just need house of hope and iron throne before gortash and the end, also oath breaker was just hiding in a corner in the camp that I missed don't need to long rest 👌
Yeah, not going to the coronation breaks a ton of quests because a lot of said quests are designed around you having gone to the coronation first. What's weird is that it's set up as a boss fight to save for later (you can literally walk past it), so there's no incentive to go to the coronation first because it seems like a fight that you want to prepare for later. I really don't understand why Wyrm's Rock doesn't have its second gate just closed until you attend the coronation to prevent tons of accidental quest breaking.
I killed Gortash first in my playthrough as to me he was the more dangerous villian as Orin has a fairly straightforward goal of wanting slaughter while Gortash was much more of a planner so it made sense to take him out first
This didn't happen to me, everyone was hostile already so there was no dialogue, maybe because I also took out the Steel Guard? Or because Ravengard was dead?
Well, Gortash isn't the chosen of Bane for no reason, he is just a good politician, but any chance he gets he will show his hand (i.e Gondians). Raphael on the other hand is full of malice, but he will only act if you give him permission to (even if that's your only choice).
if you destroy his steel watch he closes the gates and u must climb from vines, and all NPCs are hostile and u cant save Wyll's father, knockout automatically kills him after the encounter
@@DoffyDogg Well, father was already dead in the underwater lab, but i didn't have to climb vines. Only one drawbridge was up and I could still use the fast travel point to the other side.
If you accept his alliance and let him go to the Netherbrains nest and THEN destroy his steel watch before joining him there, the alliance still holds. I tried that in my playthrough lmao
He won't until you proved your strength in defeating his old allies. He is the chosen Bane, so lawful evil, respecting strength, power, order and truthfulness.
He represents tyranical law of Bane. Him just ditching you after working with you wouldn't sit well with his god. Lawful evil alignment is the kind of evil that has principles.
I went there after killing Orin and blowing up the steel watcher factory, and was just immediately attacked. No dialogue, nothing. Kind of underwhelming for such a big character in the story to not have any dialogue before the fight, in some instances at least.

Never Gortash was a fascinating villain. Jason Isaacs crushes every part but he did so much with a character with so little actually screen time.

Gortash offers this alliance to the Dark Urge regardless of whether or not you've killed Orin before or after the coronation.
I love that the voice actress for the Steel Watch sentinels has worked in many Dark Souls games

the weapons you use really depend on your build/character/class, the Everburn Blade (flaming greatsword from cambion) you can get in the tutorial can carry you to the end of the game if you want

I did every single other side quest in act 3 before doing this. Every one was dead just his army agro me when I came in without the steel watchers because I blew that other place up. It really kinda ruined the last act for me. If I would have realized I would have done this first. lol.

I was afraid of advancing further because Orin would kidnap Halsin and kill Scratch 😢 (Gale is my husband and always in my party because he’s my only mage, Minthara is dead and I didn’t know you can recruit her, Lae’zel has max approval and some people say Orin kidnaps the one with lowest approval)
IT BROKE THE GAME.
I killed Orin first and I blew up the factory. Then I skipped Gortash coronation and snuck into his bedroom through the roof (edit) and I killed Gortash.
Game thought Ravenguard was at the coronation (but there wasn't one now) AND it thought Ravenguard was alive (because I did rescue him) and it thought Ravenguard was dead.
Mizora showed up, with a "!" as did Wyll "!", but all they would say is, "What do you need?" I could not progress Wyll's story and I never found out anything about a dragon under the castle.
Apparently they have since fixed this, but it absolutely soured me on a game that let's you play almost any way you want.
I don't understand the nobility titles in this world.

How do I attend coronation?
When I first arrive to BG, Misoura said to go there and then Orin suggested to kill Gortash. However, all I could do is to destroy those mechanical guards and no way to go to coronation. No quest, no mark on the map and I discovered seemingly everything. So I went for the Orin, killed her, thinking that it would lead to Gortash but no, still no quest or any indication where to go, There was this gate near the teleport, but I couldn't go there became of earthquake knock-outs, and clear warning from the Emperor to not to go there. So how on earth would I progress to this point?
I'm almost out of side-quests and can't proceed with the main storyline.
Gortash's coronation is not in Baldurs Gate. It is in Wyrm's Rock. The Palace like thing with dungeon underneath just before entering Baldur's Gate. You can just fast travel to Rivington or Wyrm's Rock. You missed it, I don't know how, but you did.
In order to visit coronation you have to take the stairs leading you on higher level of the building..
You can find said stairs literally in the first building after crossing the giant bridge.
Stairs in the rooms on the left will lead you to prison. Stairs in the right will take you... Well up stairs.
You need to go up in Wyrm Rock before you enter lower city of Baldurs Gate and talk to him.
Rivington has two sections. The first is where the refugees are. At the end of that path you meet some guards. If you go to jail you can escape from jail. You can also fight them and do some other stuff. Jail will lead you to Wyrm's Rock after you escape. You can travel to Wyrm's rock from Rivington after the hotels and bars and all that, if I remember correctly.
I missed this too. If you are about to head to the lower city you have gone too far. Head back to the covered passage way that was just past the drawbridge that lowered. Head into the eastern door way there into a room with a central door that leads to the "throne" room.

I think i broke my save, I saved Orin and the coronation for last and did every side quest including killing the dragon under the castle, then did the coronation and wyll just keeps saying we need to tell his father about killing the dragon at camp but his father just stands at the coronation room 🤦 also broke my oath by agreeing to work with gortash and the oath breaker won't come at long rest either 😭 gotta reload my save in front of the dragon room but I'm gonna lose 4 hrs of side quests 😵
Damn I’m so sorry to hear that : / did you go to the iron throne yet? You can still go after the coronation and Ravengard will be locked up there, once you rescue him you should be able to progress the dragon quest. Not sure what to do about oathbreaker tho
@@kirbothestabo it's alright I just went back to my older save I forgot I afk'd for like 3 hrs so I only Lost like an hr and a half, im caught up now and just killed Orin, just need house of hope and iron throne before gortash and the end, also oath breaker was just hiding in a corner in the camp that I missed don't need to long rest 👌
Yeah, not going to the coronation breaks a ton of quests because a lot of said quests are designed around you having gone to the coronation first. What's weird is that it's set up as a boss fight to save for later (you can literally walk past it), so there's no incentive to go to the coronation first because it seems like a fight that you want to prepare for later. I really don't understand why Wyrm's Rock doesn't have its second gate just closed until you attend the coronation to prevent tons of accidental quest breaking.

I killed Gortash first in my playthrough as to me he was the more dangerous villian as Orin has a fairly straightforward goal of wanting slaughter while Gortash was much more of a planner so it made sense to take him out first

This didn't happen to me, everyone was hostile already so there was no dialogue, maybe because I also took out the Steel Guard? Or because Ravengard was dead?

Well, Gortash isn't the chosen of Bane for no reason, he is just a good politician, but any chance he gets he will show his hand (i.e Gondians). Raphael on the other hand is full of malice, but he will only act if you give him permission to (even if that's your only choice).

if you destroy his steel watch he closes the gates and u must climb from vines, and all NPCs are hostile and u cant save Wyll's father, knockout automatically kills him after the encounter
@@DoffyDogg Well, father was already dead in the underwater lab, but i didn't have to climb vines. Only one drawbridge was up and I could still use the fast travel point to the other side.
If you accept his alliance and let him go to the Netherbrains nest and THEN destroy his steel watch before joining him there, the alliance still holds.

He won't until you proved your strength in defeating his old allies. He is the chosen Bane, so lawful evil, respecting strength, power, order and truthfulness.
He represents tyranical law of Bane. Him just ditching you after working with you wouldn't sit well with his god. Lawful evil alignment is the kind of evil that has principles.
He can't control the Elder Brain by himself so he doesn't really have a choice but to look for new allies.
I went there after killing Orin and blowing up the steel watcher factory, and was just immediately attacked. No dialogue, nothing. Kind of underwhelming for such a big character in the story to not have any dialogue before the fight, in some instances at least.
