2 part question. Jeff, thank you so much for your informative videos. We have a camp in Newberry and I’m looking to start planting on an old food plot that hasn’t been planted in >10yrs. I’m thinking a beet/rape mix with some timothy and winter rye for this fall and then clover and peas in the spring.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Thanks, Jeff. Any suggestions for no-till in a plot like this that hasn’t been tilled in so long? Think a brassica mix next to a timothy/winter rye mix would germinate?

50 to 75. I go 75 when I only let it grow for 4 to 5 weeks before terminating and pla ting fall plots...or 50 when I go 6 to 7 weeks. I prefer 4 to 5 weeks but the seed cost is a lot higher per acre! You can add a couple weeks for poor soil. Definitely early Summer as opposed to spring most of the time.

So Jeff, since I was first, I get a question answered, right? Lol I planned on planting this weekend but rain isn’t cooperating. It’s supposed to rain mid week next week. My land is 4.5 hours away and I can’t get up again for two weeks. Should I plant this weekend? Winter rye… btw.
Yes for sure Dylan...there is always a green blend that should be the base of your food plots. Make sure for at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day!
This is my 3rd year planting a food plot. First year was mostly a disaster, but last year turned out decent. I did what you suggested with the winter rye to give more covered. I live in Kansas, I always hear you talk highly of winter rye, and it’s easy to grow for sure, but should I try winter wheat this year? I plan to plant it 4-5 weeks after my initial food plot mix. Not sure what the deer like more. ??? Thanks for all the info and explaining it so well!
Jeff, I only plant fall plots because my heard is healthy. I have a plot of 1. Clover (4 years old now. I frost seed each year), 2. Sweet feast brassica (Northwoods) 3. Fall forage blend (With rye grain, 1 Lb. clover & 1 Lb. of radish) (Northwoods) What would you rotate them with next year? Sorry for all the the plots at once but any suggestions would be appreciated!.
Hi Ronald, yes...very much so, in a variety of seed quantities too. Part of my testing in the early 2000s. Unfortunately the clover chokes out nearly all of the young growth of the rye. Combining the tow during the late summer at the correct planting timing for rye isn't a bad idea...that works...but you need to kill or mow out the rye in the Spring for a high volume stand of clover. Also, if you have at least 39 to 50% soil exposure in the late summer due to poor clover growth or excessive browse pressure you can add rye...but you will have very poor results in an adequately established stand of clover.
Hey Jeff ! My question is that I planted rye into my plot last year and then planted my buckwheat into it this year. My buckwheat has germinated but really behind I think because of the thach of the rye. There is still alot of the rye there. Will I be able to plant my fall seed into it now that I'm going to have two layers rye and buckwheat ? Looking forward to your reply.
I received my shipment the other day, and can't wait to get it planted. Thanks for another great video also! Any recommendation on using a no til drill as far as pounds per acre to plant?
So can I plant buck wheat mix in August then when it is knee high spread brassica seeds and spray it? and I am having trouble on Ph balance what is the difference between ag lime in bulk then powder lime because in my area its pretty expensive for a ton of lime.
From my understanding you're in Minnesota. The regulations here state there's no baiting of deer and any food must be pulled a week before hunting. How does this work with food plots and hunting around Ag fields?
I'm in central Missouri. I have clover in my food plots currently. We just ended a period of extreme heat and drought. My clover is starting to green back up since the rains the past few days. I had planned to drill some brassica mix in the clover. My question is do you think I could go forward with the brassica if the rains continue or should I let the clover recover without the extra competition?
Thanks for the wonderful content I’ve been trying all your methods. Next year I’ll be using your seed as well can’t wait, but I have one question. With using the plot start boost and till products do you supplement them with fertilizer? I thought I heard you say you don’t in videos past but can’t find it. Thanks!!!
How do you feel about winter wheat? I know I won't attract many deer during most of the season, but I don't want it to hunt over. I want it because here around Dayton Ohio the winter wheat fields full up with dozens of deer January -march and that's where the sheds fall. Is it hard on soil and is it throw and grow? I know nothing about it lol
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 okay so I just cleared 1.25 acres of honeysuckle, autumn olive and about 100 black cherry and tulips and I have no way to remove the stumps which are all 3-7 inches in diameter. Is winter rye or oats something I can plant there without having to till?
As long as you have exposed soil, cereal rye will grow. It will literally grow on concrete. Watch his layering rye video, you may need to take that approach if your brush is still trying to grow back, you’ll beat it at some point with the layering and have a good plot
@@KR-xq2vg thanks a lot! Is there a herbicide I can spray that'll kill weeds but not rye? I know this isn't sustainable but the deer are crushing the sucker sprouts that are growing from the tree stumps!
Hope I'm not duplicating a question: What are the pros/cons regarding the timing of seeding & terminating? It seems like you could ensure better seed-soil contact by broadcasting your seed into the standing buckwheat and then terminating.
Hey Jeff hope all is good your way. Quick question: if you were further south would your replace the rye planting with wheat? Several reports I've read have said deer prefer wheat over rye.
In one of your other videos you were saying to use a 50/50 mix of Fall Power Greens and Big Boost Brassica. How are you deciding when to mix together and when to keep them seperate?
I finally did the buckwheat thing this year BUT after it got about a foot tall it got browsed off severely! I’m going to still try and plant brassicas and oats in it but it definitely isn’t nice and thick like yours. Soil is probably poor as well.
We finally launched my own seed company 😊 John has a great company, but these are my own personal blends based on my nearly 30 years of experimenting with and designing food plot mixes for my passion and career. Been a long time coming!
Should I knock the buckwheat down before I seed with brassicas and fall blends or should I seed with buckwheat standing then knock the buckwheat down over top. Should I knock the buckwheat down or mow it?
Jeff, I'm curious, What is the difference between your seed blend and the blends you recommended from Northwoods Whitetail? I ordered from John and am planting in a a couple weeks using his seed for the first time based on your recommendations.
Both products cover 1/2 acre. I used John’s the last two years and had amazing results. $24 for John’s 3 lb bag. $50 for Jeff’s 4 lb bag? I’m sticking with John. And his customer service and quick replies have impressed me over last couple years. He answers your emails personally and very promptly.
@@timprice2865 thank you! I will be planting his fall forage with clover and radish and 1/2 acre of his brassica blend. First year trying it. I figured i try a different brand to experiment. I spoke to John also…very helpful!
Hi Jeff! The WI land is 40 acres and we have 3 acres in plots...all greens. The MN property is 245 and we have 16 acres in plots...1/2 of that is corn. In heavy woodlands you would need more food per acre...in heavy ag land, less food per acre.
Hey Jeff, Buckwheats coming in real good, hopefully it’s not too tall by the time I get home from work. I have oats peas and beans this year from northwoods whitetail. Are you saying even if that’s a good crop this year rotate it with something else next year like tillage radish or something different? Thanks again!
If you have a drill, how much would you recommend using per acre? Typically you've mentioned 100-150 pounds of the green blend if you're broadcasting it.
I have only 1 acre plot to plant in an area that has some ag fields but nothing close to where I'm at. The closest ag fields are 1-2 Mike down the road. What would you recommend planting for fall and winter blend? And then what would you transition to for spring and summer?
Hi Anthony...just enough to last into Jan/Feb. Those acres can very greatly from parcel to parcel. Then you plant that amount in corn...and you can reduce the amount of greens by 20 to 25%. 4 acres of greens turns into 4 acres of corn + 3 acres of greens for 7 acres total. As long as corn can be planted in around .75 acre blocks. It very so much tho! Meaning in non ag areas you could almost double those amounts...in heavy ag areas you could cut in 1/2 those amounts.
This might be the first video where I saw you spraying st the same time you were packing. How did it work for you? I wonder if you only sprayed to the back and one side that you might not need to turn the sprayer off at all. Thoughts?
Starting my first plot this year. Didn’t get it done in time to plant buck wheat. Planning on doing no till method. I got fall blend seeds and tilled radish seeds. What do you recommend I do planting wise? Throw seed and call it real? Or roll it in the ground with a roller. Northern Indiana
So I had a plot I let go from last year with rye. Yes, it sat all summer and came to head. For several reasons I could no get to it this year to mow or spay. Are you saying I should not try other green blends because that rye seed will germinate again and prevent my other greens from growing???
So let's add this up. Buckwheat in spring everywhere as a cover crop then buckwheat etc. in the "green blend" plots before the rye blends...Hmmm I think you bought out every buckwheat supplier in the Mid West then started your own seed company? Why didn't I think of that!
Jeff thank you so much for your responses. I try and keep my question short and brief so that you can respond the same. I know your time is valuable but I truly appreciate all your videos and your time. Thank you!

I can never get winter rye to germinate by just broadcasting into a standing plot. Can't figure out how it works for you. Seed company says I should lightly cover the seeds with soil
Could a person plant rye grain into a good brassica crop in October to help with more browse in the brassica only side or is it a waste of seed? Thank you for your videos, excited to plant in another week or so.

Jeff serious question, last Sunday we spread seeds into our buckwheat, crushed the buckwheat, and sprayed it with 41% glyphosate weed killer mixed with water. Problem is it didn’t not kill some Lady’s Thumb. And now the Lady’s thumb is growing rapid. Is it too late to spray everything with roundup or will it affect the seeds?
Any videos on mobile hunting (climber) strategies during the season phases (early/pre rut/rut) on public land?

So Jeff, since I was first, I get a question answered, right? Lol
I planned on planting this weekend but rain isn’t cooperating. It’s supposed to rain mid week next week. My land is 4.5 hours away and I can’t get up again for two weeks. Should I plant this weekend? Winter rye… btw.
@Number 1 Western Fan bow season in wisconsin starts a week after Labor Day. Not enough time for any growth??
Hi Bill! Really the rye in Northern areas still shouldn't be planted until closer to labor day weekend. Around here I plant early to mid Sept.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 ok, thanks, Jeff!!
You could always plant a small area of plot early and the rest 9/1
@Number 1 Western Fan thanks
Should I plant this in woods with no ag around
Where you are planting corn do you plant corn over corn year to year or are you rotating that also?
Jeff, I only plant fall plots because my heard is healthy. I have a plot of
1. Clover (4 years old now. I frost seed each year),
2. Sweet feast brassica (Northwoods)
3. Fall forage blend (With rye grain, 1 Lb. clover & 1 Lb. of radish) (Northwoods)
What would you rotate them with next year? Sorry for all the the plots at once but any suggestions would be appreciated!.
Do you ever layer Rye on your clover plots. (Northern Indiana)
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 thanks. Love watching and learning from all you videos. Good stuff.
Our plots are clear sir, waiting for the rain! Thanks for all you do!!
That's great JJ...good luck!!
Any chance you will be able to ship to Canada next year ??
Yes for sure...as long as it's legal, we sure will!
Great . thanks
What should I plant on my 5 acres only 1/4 plot in mostly crp with some ag around?
Brassicas would be great! There's a lot of good things you can plant!
Great job Jeff
Thanks Jeff👍🏻
Thanks for the wonderful content I’ve been trying all your methods. Next year I’ll be using your seed as well can’t wait, but I have one question. With using the plot start boost and till products do you supplement them with fertilizer? I thought I heard you say you don’t in videos past but can’t find it. Thanks!!!
What do you spray on the buck wheat? How long do you what to put seed ou?
How do you feel about winter wheat? I know I won't attract many deer during most of the season, but I don't want it to hunt over. I want it because here around Dayton Ohio the winter wheat fields full up with dozens of deer January -march and that's where the sheds fall. Is it hard on soil and is it throw and grow? I know nothing about it lol
I plant 1/2 of all my green plots in winter rye every year...not much different than wheat, and oats may be an even better fit in your area.
Never mind, I'm a dummy....trying to do two things at once, and after watching again I found the important variable of buckwheat height.
Hey Jeff hope all is good your way. Quick question: if you were further south would your replace the rye planting with wheat? Several reports I've read have said deer prefer wheat over rye.
What do you do with all that mass leftover next year
It deteriorates into nothing by late Fall. The corn I brushhog in the Spring and that helps break it down
Will you be selling switch grass? And who do you use to ship your seed? Hope it's no FedEx lol
What are your feelings on the different liquid fertilizers
How would you suggest planting Buck Wheat in a new food plot with tall weeds in it now?
Looks like you moved your wider sprayer boom onto your ATV and moved the smaller sprayer boom onto your Kubota. Any reason for the switch?
So no more northwoods seed?
We finally launched my own seed company 😊 John has a great company, but these are my own personal blends based on my nearly 30 years of experimenting with and designing food plot mixes for my passion and career. Been a long time coming!
We’re still here
😉
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 looking forward to next year to use !
I will be buying my food plot seed from WHS going forward
I appreciate that very much Randy! Our price will be drastically reduced for you for the next planting season 😊
Should I knock the buckwheat down before I seed with brassicas and fall blends or should I seed with buckwheat standing then knock the buckwheat down over top.
Should I knock the buckwheat down or mow it?
Thanks I missed that typing most likely.
Jeff, I'm curious, What is the difference between your seed blend and the blends you recommended from Northwoods Whitetail? I ordered from John and am planting in a a couple weeks using his seed for the first time based on your recommendations.
Name on bag and price.
I always had really good luck with Whitetail Institute Wintergreens and my Fusion plot is three years old and still plush and thick. I do take care of the plots and frost seed to help. I figured i try a different brand to experiment. I spoke to John also…very helpful!
I should say.. how many acres is your hunting site and what percentage is food plot
Hi Jeff! The WI land is 40 acres and we have 3 acres in plots...all greens. The MN property is 245 and we have 16 acres in plots...1/2 of that is corn. In heavy woodlands you would need more food per acre...in heavy ag land, less food per acre.
Hey Jeff,
Buckwheats coming in real good, hopefully it’s not too tall by the time I get home from work.
Can you plant buck wheat in September and leave it till next year
No. I wish you could Max! It does with the first frost...
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 what's something good to plant now in a small food plot so weeds do grow and you can no till it next year thanks
Jeff, how many acres of green do you recommend before you add the corn in the food pyramid?
Hi Anthony...just enough to last into Jan/Feb. Those acres can very greatly from parcel to parcel. Then you plant that amount in corn...and you can reduce the amount of greens by 20 to 25%.
4 acres of greens turns into 4 acres of corn + 3 acres of greens for 7 acres total. As long as corn can be planted in around .75 acre blocks. It very so much tho! Meaning in non ag areas you could almost double those amounts...in heavy ag areas you could cut in 1/2 those amounts.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 thanks for the reply. I’ve got some work ahead of me.
It's raining ! WOO HOOO 🕺🏻🕺🏻
Haha! Me too!
Yippy!!! Soothes the soul
@@naomicreech9870 thanks !

So let's add this up. Buckwheat in spring everywhere as a cover crop then buckwheat etc. in the "green blend" plots before the rye blends...Hmmm I think you bought out every buckwheat supplier in the Mid West then started your own seed company? Why didn't I think of that!
I wish...man the prices SUCK! Why we limited the amount of buckwheat in the green blend, unfortunately.
I live in Ohio, I just did a video on Food Plots for the Midwest.
How many acres on this site?
Food plot is 2.5acres
Jeff thank you so much for your responses. I try and keep my question short and brief so that you can respond the same. I know your time is valuable but I truly appreciate all your videos and your time. Thank you!
Thank you Jeff!
Hi Jeff, I'll be seeding with a spreader. First time food plotting. Advice on which settings on the Earthway 2750 for spreading your WHS blend, Rye, and switchgrass? Oh, brassica too?
Hi Greg...about 1.5 for brassica...3.5 for the green blend. Late planted rye is about wide open. Switch 1.5 for 8 to 10#s per acre
Jeff, what setting do you use on your earthway broadcaster for these blends? Thanks!
I asked John Komp that very same question, he said planting rye is fine as long as the brassicas have time to get established before doing so.
@@samdicicco7136 thank you so much. Looking forward to this hunting season. Made a lot of improvements this year based and this channel and followers suggestions. Thank you again man.
Or can I go over it again with the glyphosate but with a heavier dose of it mixed with water?
