Thanks Jeff. Fall planting right around the corner. Went perennial clover, birdsfoot and alfalfa on several small plots this year. An old saying, "inert matter" might as well be dirt, no value! Best of luck to all and pray for timely rain!

Started off the new farm with some late late (late) planted soybeans last weekend. Either they will live or the deer will eat them all but it seemed practical so I could get on top of weeds in year one and then switch things over to greens and buckwheat. On the verge of 2+years of projects done in under 8 months and I am feeling it!
The great thing is you can still plant actual fall crops in August 😉 We've had 100s of plots from clients or my own that weren't even bulldozed or worked until between 8/1 thru late September, and then planted with a huge level of success...

We put together a video you can check out, but in a nutshell, I managed to get about a 1/8 acre plot of your Big Boost brassicas growing last year in central Texas. After a couple hiccups, it did great!
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I planted September 12th. The weather got hot and dry again after seeding which stunted it badly. But by mid October it started raining again and it took off in November. I'll be planting later this year

Hi Jeff or any fp gurus, in your experience is there any type of food plot that does not tolerate walnut/juglone? Or maybe recommendations for the most tolerant? I have a small plot that has a few mature walnuts on the edge don't want to waste money on planting something that will perform poorly near them.. TIA
I spoke on a website that I’m trying your brasica blend( without kale) due to those tall stemmy plants that the deer won’t touch) I even said I spoke with the owner and he has no plans to remove from blend . He chimes in on the site and said that wasn’t the kale it was a radish that went to seed , he also said that’s what happens when mixed with extra radish he has the mix that way for a reason ?? It sure didn’t look like radish . I still think it’s the kale doing that……I will let you know how your blend does for me this fall. I’m not too far from your location in sw wisconsin
Hi Timmy! It's definitely the Kale...100%. We actually figured that out roughly 15 years ago, but most food plot seed companies wouldn't have the experience to know better, unfortunately. Just a low attraction brassica variety that is better for big woods and wilderness area where deer tend to browse on the plots much heavier. In that case we offer Kale in our Big Woods Brassica blend. Great volume/low attraction is o erect for those low food volume areas.
How do you approach cereal rye, wheat, oats, etc in a heavy agricultural region with surrounding fields/farmers sometimes planting 20,50,100+ acres of winter wheat?
Hi Eric...with clover, brassica, peas, late planted buckwheat, vetch, chicory, corn...and then I layer the rye. Laying the rye becomes thicker and more of a mouthful with each bite. Also deer don't want to feed in a huge ag field during the daylight, compared to a hidden diverse plot. In ag land I never recommend rye as a food plot...or wheat or oats...just a compliment to an appropriate and diverse food plot.
Down in Texas we have a lot of limestone so my soil’s PH is high (8.1). What seed does well in high PH soil? I’m trying to lower by using ammonia sulfate fertilizer but it takes time.
Does anyone have a good way to spread lime on a smaller basis? At 62yo I am not going to carry 50+lb bags to spread and i have not had good luck with ATV spreaders or push spreaders. It seems that the lime needs to be agitated (especially powder) to get it to drop in the spreader. Otherwise you just get a hole in the middle of the spreader where the wire is rotating.
We dont spray weeds at all and our plots do get some weeds but the way we look at it is even if i get 1/4 of my plot os weeds i still have more food on the ground than what i did before. We just dont wanna spray chemicals that will leave into the soil and chemicals that can cause cancer.
There are rarely ever food plots that are only affected 25% by weeds. The weeds knock volume down as well...so 50% weed coverage totals 90% food plot loss pretty quickly. Opinions are cool, but always seek facts...

I treat my food plot like my garden alot of mulch with cow manure mixed in and I take chicken and Turkey manure from my animals and sometimes rabbit manure. I don't use miracle grow or any chemical fertilizer in my garden or my food plot. We will also be using a wood chipper to grind up all the trees that we cut down. This is how we do it but I do like listening to you about how u do it.
Jeff...i got my buckwheat out late, only a few weeks ago on a new plot, how late in Southeastern KY can i wait to plant fall crop? I have fall power greens and perennial plot power.
I have my first no till plot going, the buckwheat came up well but still isn't as tall as I expected and there is a lot of milkweed that seemed to resist the 24d/glyph blend spray in June. Is that a concern or will they crush similar to the buckwheat?
I have 30 acres of woodland that I’m leasing. The land owner doesn’t want any trees removed. I made 2 food plots ( not big) but they were growing like crazy but now they died off. Just wondering if you could tell me what kind of seed to plant that doesn’t need sun. I’m going to try and replant them the end of July or early August. Thank you for your time. Jeff
Unfortunately nothing grows well in the shade. That's why we don't sell a shady food plot mix. Even rye needs at least 3 hours of sun + clover at least 3-4 hours+. Anyone who sells a shady food plot mix is just trying to steal your money, unfortunately.

After Jen worked on it for about 9 months, with a rollercoaster of highs and potential, we eventually were led down a rabbit hole of impossibility. They make it extremely difficult if not impossible to ship seed across the border!!

I wouldn't buy it there unless I had too...bet cheaper from a feed mill? Harvey's in Carson City MI is a great choice for MI. But lots of great family run seed mills across th country 😉

You can use pelletized lime with an ATV spreader. More expensive for pelletized but it works!

Hi Randall! You can wait until around 8/15 to 8/20 pretty safely, which should give your buckwheat a lot more opportunity to grow 😊👍

clover maybe with little sun, rye grows everywhere.

It depends on how big the grit size is. Powder is the best...a large grit size is really bad.

Also you have to be careful...that may be rye grass, instead of rye grain. You don't want to plant perennial rye grass in your plots...at all.
