My plots are looking great. Again, we suffer the same mid to late August heat and dry spell so I’m glad I stuck to my norm and planted early August when we have plenty of rain. Really hoping for a pop up shower or 2 this week to combat the high 90 temps.
Hi Tommy...I would go with around 150#s on labor Day weekend...then about the same towards the end of Sept when there is decent weather and rain in the forecast
Jeff, there is 10 acres of alfalfa across the road. There are tons of does and fawns, but only a few bucks. I planted fall food plots. Hoping to see some more bucks.
Jeff currently watching your videos with a broke ankle! Had a screw in step break on me going up a tree! Going to have to get some people to help me finish up my deer chores
Jeff what was the time fram from germination/planting until urea goes down. I’ve been skimming through your videos and couldn’t find where you said the time after planting or plant height for it.
Hi Nick! Usually right around 3 to 4 weeks when the plants are dry and rain is in the immediate forecast. Plant height is typically 4 to 8"....sometimes a little taller. Same time we add Plot Boost too!
I did the buckwheat no till method and planted brassicas, but after germination we have got lots of rain in western NY and my plot is too wet and almost all the brassicas have died. Assuming some of moisture leaves what is the best way to salvage the plot?
If the seed is well stored...you would typically only lose 5% seed in that 1st year...maybe a rough guide? You can also freeze seed for many years, as well...
Hey Jeff ! My buckwheat is only ankle high do to drought and deer presure. My question is I don't think their will be enough thatch to cover my seed in our no plow system. What do you recommend in this situation? Thank you for everything you do for us looking forward hearing back.
I'm finding my chicory is absolutely worthless. Turnips and radish seem to work really well for me. I'm noticing my clover is hit all year long. I'm going to just grow exactly what you suggest because everything I've done based on your recommendations has worked very well.
Well I appreciate that Mike! Chicory is a great addition with the clover as it keeps the clover more lush during the drought. It's typically the last thing eaten but does serve a purpose in a mix. Terrible stand alone plot in most areas ...
Hi Jeff, what kind of handsaw do you prefer? I have been using the Silky Zubat model for the last 5 years and have found it to be an exceptional top end saw for habitat work. Great video. Cris
Hey Jeff I live near Mio Michigan not a lot of deer but I have used many of your techniques in my Woods and it has made a great difference I really enjoy your videos and your knowledge
That's a tough one! I've always wondered what a light discing would do but have never done so. One strategy is to give them extra fertilizer...as well as up to 100#s of Urea per acre right before a good rain
Great video as always Jeff!! I live in mixed ag like you, would winter wheat work as a replacement for cereal rye for top seeding 1/2 of my green plot?
jeff, off topic but who do you recommend for planting food plots to your customers? of course I've heard you say the name lots of times but cant remember. I have 18 acres i'm taking out of ag and putting into pollinator/food plots/switch
How much area do you need to compliment your greens with corn? We have 50 acres with about 6 acres of greens in multiple .5 acre-2 acre plots. Mixed ag, Western Illinois, moderate to high deer density.
Hi Jeff, love your food plotting content. So helpful for me! Do you still advocate for food plot trails on certain small parcels (10 acres or less)? I'm located adjacent to a large ag field of beans (150+ acres)
I watched your 'How to Plant Logging Trails- OR NOT' video actually! very helpful! Here is the ljnk for those of you wanting it: ruclips.net/video/dC4uIGu2waI/видео.html
What would you recommend for properties that are 60-80 acres of woods and surrounded by big Ag fields? Not only for food but habitat in general. Thanks!
Would love to be able to plant 1-2 acres of corn but the local bear population won’t allow that. Would have it leveled by mid September. Have to stick to brassicas, soybeans, winter rye
Hey Jeff, questions for western PA plots. I have a barrasica blend already planted on August 5th, usually wait until mid September to throw the rye down to fill in spots and add more tonnage, I want to add tillage radish, would you suggest add those in now or more towards September 1st? Because you can add tillage radish a little later because it germinates quickly right?
I guess I’m confused with you stating not to have summer food in a deep wood section but then stated you need to develop a pattern of use so they know there is food there
You never want enough Summer food to raise herd numbers. A simple pass thru hunting plot works exceptional but is too small to raise herd numbers during the Summer months. However, mature bucks wander during the Summer...even get bumped when other surrounding hunters are going into the woods. When they do that and you have a little hunting plot planted in clover they find it and come back for more in the Fall because you safely established a pattern of use 😉
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 that makes sense. We’ve been controlling our intrusions on our 1/4 acre plot this year and so far we’ve been noticing a increase of daytime activity compared to last year. Keeping pressure down to as close to 0 as possible has increased our daytime picture count of deer. We planted brassica seed first weekend of this month and it’s been growing great. We also have a crossing strip planted in chicory that’s from clear cut to our plot.
Everything that is beans this year is going to be alfalfa next summer. Would you expect this to have any impact on the number of mature bucks seen? The number of mature bucks seen in the past three years keeps dwindling, and it is not because they are killed. I have no idea what has changed but it has been disappointing.
Really looking forward to a great deer season hope everyone has a great season as 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks ! Good luck 👍🏻🦌

Thanks again

I have same situation on one farm... when the alfalfa browns up your plots will rock !

Same boat... literally ! One lowland plot was under inches of water for a week.. all mud now. Hoping rye in September will save it 🤞🏻
Good luck !
What is the life of seeds in general? If for example, I had in a sealed 55 gallon barrel with seed stores in it? I enjoy all your videos. Thank you!

I have had that happen as well. Deer in Southern Michigan love BW and eat it as soon as it's up. Hard to get a cover thatch crop to get high enough.
Great video as always dies are hammering my brassicas up in Northern MN I had to add a second plot now waiting to get my rye and peas and oats out

Man I appreciate the info! Makes me realize how little I know about this stuff
Well you are very welcome Josh I hope it all helps!
There is a huge stash of videos on each subject 👍 reinforcement of concepts and techniques
Hope it works out for everybody. Thanks Jeff
Yes for sure ..especially with so little rain!
Could you only use fall rye if your on timber company land with poor soil and can only plant long linear plots where pines didnt take?
Sure...would likely be your best option!
Love your videos, learning a lot! Keep it up!
Thanks a lot Joel I will do my best!

Where do you order your plot boost and Plot Start from Jeff?
Going back into the 90’s this week in Missouri. Hate to wait any longer to plant your brassicas

Do you recommend burning the piles of wood that you clear or will the deer just walk around them
How much area do you need to compliment your greens with corn? We have 50 acres with about 6 acres of greens in multiple .5 acre-2 acre plots. Mixed ag, Western Illinois, moderate to high deer density.
Did you document the herd numbers when you first purchased the land and if so what has changed?
We have a LOT more hunting season bucks...a similar # of does? We have some neighbors that stockpile does so that helps 😊
What plot gives you the best opportunity on opening day? Seems like your neighbor figured it out! (Venti)😢
Haha...yes, the rut in the middle of gun season is a great formula 😁
Looks great!! You got good moisture!!!
