Love my clover plots not only for deer but the grouse, rabbits and turkeys use them a lot too. Been getting a bunch of pictures of bears out grazing in them as well over the past few weeks as well. Good maintenance info Jeff!
Great vid on clover. Ur right on with gly not killing clover. Ive tried to kill a clover field. Even 2-4d and gly didnt kill it the 1st spray. It came back. Clover is some tuff stuff
thanks a lot! That clover is so dang tough. It takes drought and Gly to kill it...and it has to be young. Once established it is very resilient! Which is also why there is very little reason to re-do an established clover field unless neglected for a year or more.
Have you tried burnet in any of your food plots? If so, does mowing hurt it? I have it mixed in with clover. Deer seem to love it but not sure how it will respond to mowing.
Hi Jeff! Mowing will not hurt SB. I used it for a couple of years on several acres around 20-22 years ago. It grew, but not enough or fast enough that I wanted to continue using it. At that time I was experimenting with chicory in various seeding amounts within clover and I found it to be a much better option...both as a food source and as a perennial nurse crop to the clover. And then I haven't seen any positive results since that made me want to try it again. It's not bad in a dry soil blend...just very low volume.
Jeff, for mowing clover, what height do you usually let it go to before you mow it? Also, what height do you cut it down to? What is the ideal height for it to be going into the hunting season? I know you mentioned mowing around labor day, but the height of clover around that time may be different depending on the year and weather, so I'm wondering if there's an ideal height that deer enjoy eating it most at, or if labor day can be a consistent last mowing regardless of the height of the clover. Thanks for your help!
I got a late start due to kids sports. I eliminated the winter rye I had from last fall. Now that it's June I have to eliminate the weeds which came up. Now in your opinion what should I put down. I have a quarter acre plot. I do have clover seed from last fall, its probably too late to throw down. I live in upstate NY.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 yeah mine is very very tall and thick and I just planted it last fall. I might play it safe and use the weed wacker lol.
Thanks jeff, great video. I've got a 1 acre plot that I can irrigate off of a spring that is a mix of clover, chicory, and alfalfa. Can I spray clethodem on that? If so what rate? Also, I've heard that alfalfa won't allow new plants to grow in the field. Can I freshen up that plot with clover and chicory this fall thanks.
Thanks Jeff, I would be very cautious about spraying roundup on clover. I’m sure I did it wrong but I wiped out a beautiful stand of clover last year and I was really disappointed. I would never do it again
That really depends on how many gallons your sprayer uses to cover an acre. It is likely between 12 and 16 gallons per acre at 7mph, but that wouldn't matter if it was between 10 and 20 gallons. It just depends on how much your unit uses to cover and acre and then you add the chemical.
Hey Jeff so I keep reading mixed reviews some say that sunflower seeds are great for deer and they have lots of phosphorus and proteins. But then I read another page then they talk about they don't have the right microbes in their gut to break it down and could kill them if they eat too much? So is it a good idea to plant them for one and two is it a good idea to steer clear from deer feed that has a large majority of it in it?
Planted clover and oatsthis spring ,the oat is out growing the clover , Should I weedeat the oats down the the hight of the clover . clover is the crop I want ?
Hi Stev, as long as the oats aren't smothering out the clover it's ok. When the oats are a foot or more and the clover is coming in well, you could mow down to 6" or so. You will have to mow at some point, but you just want to make sure the clover is doing well.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 well i dunno i researched buckwheat as a nurse crop and found many people do it. If its an epic fail soil is still improving but my bets are the deer keep it in check. Cant keep them off of the round up ready alfafa we have now

Thanks Peter ..man that's pretty cool!
Clover and control weeds with 2-4db and clethodim. With all the rain we have had this year, our plots looks great!
Planted about 5 apple trees and seeded clover back in April! Hope to have all my stands up by mid June then get out and watch cameras
Sounds great Drew...bet that feels pretty dang good too!

Just used a straight shaft trimmer to cut my rye down to the top of my clover in my two 1/4 acre and 1/2 acre clover plots.
Thanks, Jeff as always. This is fantastic information and is greatly appreciated. God bless.
Thanks a lot Bb we really appreciate you!

I put out the traffic max, and for the first time, I’ve got turkeys coming in on it!! Never had a turkey before, that I was aware of
Hi Paul, the love perennial plantings! Very cool and I hope you have a nice lush stand of it.
Great tips. My little clover plot is in north central pa and ferns are the problem. Whats the best to control for that ? Thanks.
Amazing Tips!
Thank you Jeff 🇨🇦
Thanks a lot Carlo!

Lots of contradictory info on using Imox, especially on clover/chicory mixed stands. Any experience on your part?

If you have open patches in your clover plots do you plant winter rye or something similar?
Hi Jeb... definitely after Labor Day in my area.
Great info 👍☘️

Thanks a lot!
Hey Jeff can you mow it with a zero turn mower or will that be too short. The deck will go up to 4.5"
You sure can! Just depends on if you will burn up any belts or not. That clover can be very thick!
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 yeah mine is very very tall and thick and I just planted it last fall. I might play it safe and use the weed wacker lol.
Putting in brand new kill plot 1/8th acre this yr. Is your dual threat a good choice? What is in dual threat?
It would likely be a great choice! Here you go 😉

Whats the shortest you can go I have a push mower and a straight shaft trimmer
I would use the trimmer and cut to about 6"

You have to make sure it's only 1 quart per acre...and not before a drought. That's the tough part...
I did the same thing. Im afraid to try roundup on mine again. LOL
Jeff, when you say one quart per acre of glyphosate per acre, can you tell me in approx how much water.
That really depends on how many gallons your sprayer uses to cover an acre. It is likely between 12 and 16 gallons per acre at 7mph, but that wouldn't matter if it was between 10 and 20 gallons. It just depends on how much your unit uses to cover and acre and then you add the chemical.
Any rules regarding height of the clover. Or just mow when rain is forecasted
I mow down to 4-6".

Is that leafless tree in the background a stratigically placed attractant ?
Hi Ron! That's our mock scrap tree....we hang a vine from it.

Would Kentucky crimson be a good field for deer plots?
What about nutsedge. What works for nutsedge in clover.
What about the nutsedge? How did you control it?
Sedge hammer
Trying buckwheat as a nurse crop for clover this tear. Gladwin county michigan with no agg. Deer eat everything
You just want to make sure that the buckwheat won't actually grow...it will kill the clover if it shades it out.

Is the yellow flower chicory?
No...that's yellow rocket. A weed! But it will slowly be mowed out of the clover...
I have a great spot to plant clover , but its in the bottom of a cow pasture. Im afraid the cows will eat it up lol
