Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

There's no harm at all in doing multi8ple videos on the same topic. I find it difficult to learn to paint looser, less realistically. Every video on this topic, especially with different subjects, is helpful. Thanks.
a giant master; a giant teacher ; thanks
Love your humor!
I find the video very usefull, for us starting with oils, thank you
It was really helpful... Thx for this video 🌿
Great video,it worked for me👍painting first time so mine looks more greenish so I decided to call it an avocado 🤣 i wish i could see how you are using medium and paint thinner on this one in detail
very nice technique
wow beautiful
great job
The was super helpful!! Realizing I can be a bit more bold with making decisions, especially mixing colors. What you said about colors and value made my mind click.
very nice
Nicely done! I enjoy your choices in video tutorials and your delivery.
My issue as a new oil painter is which style to follow. I’m attracted to realism and impressionist styles by different artists. Should I concentrate on learning more traditional styles of painting before I attempt one that ‘breaks the rules’? I feel conflicted and it’s preventing me from actually choosing and creating a painting. I would also like to try a bigger painting but don’t want to end up with something I hide under my bed lol.
Try all of them, or at least several different styles. And your own style will develop automatically. So don't choose now. Just paint! A Lot!
It depends on what you really want. If you paint to express your feelings, follow the expressionists you like. If you want to have a nice, realistic result, follow realistic artists, I recommend you to follow Justin Wood art on Instagram,. It's all about what you really want. If you love both styles the same, do what I do. It depends on your mood. One day you want a realistic painting, paint it. Another day you may want to express your thoughts by painting, do it. It's all about you.
ive been doing art for several years and ive just recently gotten into oil painting and ive found that if you just try different styles that you like and experiment with different ways of portraying subjects, etc, youll start to develop your own style out of that
Enjoy your content. Thank you for sharing.
I have learned quite alot thru the short clips.
Can i access older tutorials if signed up with Patreon?
I love the end on how you show your silly personality: please choose videos. Made me subscribe!
hi Chris, please demonstrate how to draw and paint 4 different flower vases. thank you
Instead of linseed oil have you used Gamblins solvent free gel to thin your paint? What are your thoughts on using gel instead of oil? Thanks
Awesome Chris! I saw the site where you get your brushes but I was curious what type of bristle you use for your still life painting. Thanks so much in advance. Hope you are well. Ernie
I want to know about “the base” of the canvas itself should i paint it white before starting with painting (like acrylic paint) or can you just start right away?
And what kind of linseed should you use for beginner oil painter you have refined, thickend, stand oil, drying and cold press linseed oil.
Could you put a link to the original photograph please ? It's hard to reproduce when seeing it so little on a video. Great tutorial nonetheless, thanks.
Do you have a fav black that is your go to for stills?
Thanks 🤍
Is this the same still life that’s part of your intro course?
Are your tutorials also applicable to acrylic paints?
Are you doing this pear sight-size?
(Another possible topic?)
Good warm-up exercise!
How to know when to wait for adding more colors and when to keep adding? Background- mixing not easy with oils like acrylic’s. Plz guide
i like to draw an make sketches but i am not good in colouring, i want to learn the basic of how to apply oil colour, the equipment and etc
how to choose right colors for different tones is what I struggle with the most
please make a tutorial on that if you can
please tell me how to dry these paints faster 😣
When I start painting I do really good but toward the end I start messing it up. I don’t know when to stop. Any suggestions?
Periodically step back from your painting, I mean like at least across the room from it - this can help you see when it might be finished. Remember, simplicity often results in success!
Any ideas on how to minimize glair on black backgrounds like this ? Hard to hang without a huge glare. Thanks anyone.
What kind of canvas do you use ? Answer please ....
When to know we should give time to dry and not mix or blend colors? When to know that yes now we can add colors to earlier one?
Would have liked to see you blur the edges on the upper right
high light=yellow+white+orange?
What are you painting on??
Arches oil paper
You missed the green glow on the upper right side of the pear ...
I seemed like you pointed to a red and called it indian yellow at the first part of the video.
can i send the painting of this pair via e-mail?
Pls why do you not use Munsell values, it is easier to be on the same page on the properties colors you are using such as:
1. Values
2. Hue
3. Chroma or intensity
It’s like talking about measure or distance without common S.I. Units
Thank you
why is it that all oil painters have such a loud swallow?
