For anyone else wondering, I tried a heap of things to attach the fire paper to the 24G paper covered wire (sugar glue, crisco, water, etc) and the thing that worked best for me was piping gel. Just tiny dabs, but it held the paper firm and the fire burned over/around it. Hope this helps someone :)

It is not touching the cake, we use floral wire to attach them, it burns in a flash leaving no ashes, so safe to consume.
