  • The AMD Ryzen 8000 series CPUs have been announced but in many ways they aren't what we were expecting and they may also cause some confusion for potential buyers. So let's talk about these new CPUs that focus on Ai in order to compete against Intel Meteor Lake.

Yeah the only big thing they did with these is officially announce them before Intel launches Meteor Lake. They can now claim to be "first" with an NPU. Though MTL-U laptops will be available before Hawk Point and more broadly too.

So? I don't get why people are acting like this is some rug being pulled out. We've known since last year that AMD would be having a separate line of apu's with an npu on them. This also isn't AMD's first time putting apu's in their own numbering scheme either.

@@MrMackievelli A few 2023 have NPU too. You're basically asking "so who cares that they're called ryzen 8000 instead of 7000, obviously general consumers will be able to know that they're the same and not spend more on the newer 8000 chip" lol

@@JarrodsTech LOL, no. Who cares about other brands. AMD feels that their is no room in the 7000 series sku's to squeeze another number in. Boohoo. They aren't the 'same', adding a npu adds complexity. If you don't want to spend ten dollars more or whatever it will be for an npu, then don't.

Honestly I think the refresh has less to do with AMD & Intel’s marketing departments and a lot more to do with Microsoft’s upcoming AI requirements for Windows. AMD and Intel laptop OEM partners are basically forcing the issue here - they need laptops with beefed up AI capabilities for next year’s back to school season, and that means the chips going into those laptops need to be released to the public in Q1 or early Q2. The OEM’s need time to test, validate (not just the chip, but the entire laptop) and then build enough inventory so products can launch in significant volumes by July.
I don’t like the fact that Zen 5 isn’t ready, or that AMD is releasing a refresh without any changes to CPU or CPU architecture, but they’re going to give their OEM customers exactly what they want, and for 2024 that means significant better AI performance via the NPU. Is what it is, at least until Zen 5 and RDNA4 are ready.

NPU is like RT cores but for AI workloads before RT cores the complex light reflection bouncing physics is too hard to render so gpu sacrifice the frame rate so when we got deticated or hardware level RT cores the gpu got less load so it can generate more frames just like that AI workloads will part of the our daily computing like generative ai runs locally with low power and you don't need to depends on cpu or gpu and if AI workloads cpu runs without npu the performance get impacted negatively.

AMD went Ryzen 4000/6000 series is what I would say, if it wasn’t for the decoder ring naming scheme meaning that the 8000 series can also be part of the Zen 5 launch. At least those other series were more exciting (4000 series was Zen 2 mobile, while 6000 series brought Navi-based iGPUs)
As stupid as Intel’s PowerPoint to calling AMD out (Raptor Lake Refresh being called 14th gen), this whole decoder ring is as confusing even though it’s technically less misleading: AMD should’ve named these “7x46” CPUs, an increment from “7x45”

The main problem stems with the corporate executives giving timelines in contracts like. At time X we must release X amount of products, its routines like this is why we get half baked games, half baked gpus and processors. The need to put out new things on year X. For better or for worse (Idk im not a psychic) but I would rather prefer them release new products that are actually worth the $$$ that is a masterpiece regardless of how many years it takes, same goes for games.
To be fair, Im not entirely sure if we are going through a technological advancement diminishing returns. Meaning, it is no longer proportional to have technological improvements as we have from a decade ago. (ex. 1050 - 2050 = 100% fps improvement, but now 3050-4050= only 50% imrpovement.) As time goes on, that margin of fps imrpovement will wane due to technological restrictions.
