I absolutely loved King George VI's reign. He was so much better in his duty to the crown, to his responsibility to his children and his wife, Queen Elizabeth than he was with his brother who was supposed to be King. I thought his brother was a brat and spoiled beyond anything resembling a King. King George VI was such a handsome man as well. He was such a better man, even though it was difficult for him because his brother, who was supposed to be King, abdicated because he was in love with his American lover, then his wife, Mrs. Simpson. I felt it was such a good plan for him, but I realized it was hard for him. His smoking ruined his health, dying at such a young age in his 50s. I adored his dedication to his job, his family and his responsibilities. Queen E2 had a wonderful father and mother to show her the way of the responsibilities necessary to be an incredible Queen. ❤

So touching, what a truly wonderful person, dealt with one might say a wonderful and privileged hand. Privileged maybe, but all the mental torture he went thru in his early life. This time he would be the King during the 'Blitz', and God Bless him for being with his people. With the war over, no matter the bread lines people loved their King. With us, children of Elizabethan age, we rarely know him. But I'm glad that there are many films, series and documentaries about him. He devoted himself for the country a lot. And he was a sample of his daughter and the latter generation of the monarch. Now we know how the late queen learn from, from the great man, her father.

As the younger son who was originally not meant to be King, he was likely ignored by everyone, including his parents, for the accommodation of his older brother. This likely led to a loss of self-esteem of which his stammering was a symptom. Yet he overcame both the obstacles and the odds to guide his nation through the horrors of World War Two.
As a young boy, he was treated very badly. One of the 'nannies' who was supposed to be looking after him was extremely spiteful towards him, his brother mocked his stammer mercilessly and when he saw his father, the King was often in a very bad temper, shouting and scolding him for no particular reason. It was only much later on towards the end of his reign, that the King spoke to his second son in a more normal way. The King had many rows with his eldest son. He famously predicted that the Duke of Windsor (as he subsequently became) wouldn't last a year as King and that he would have much preferred that the younger of the two brothers reign, which of course is what happened. The Duke of Windsor also said that Queen Mary became almost a different person towards her children, when the King wasn't there.
I'm sorry but in my opinion Bertie (George VI) was far better looking then David (Edward VIII) who to me always looked like a boy until his forties then looked like a short, skinny old man. George VI stood tall, and broad shoulders and a smile that reached his eyes. Edward VIII smiled all the time, but it was cold and phony. King George VI made his parents, grandparents and great grand parents proud. He took on the job he was never trained for but with his loving wife at his side. He took it on and showed his people and the world what a true Monarch was. May he rest in peace.
I always think the same about the Duke of Windsor - he looked boyish but then abruptly changed to looking old and wrinkled likely due to all the smoking.
@@gb9612 early photos of Duchess of Windsor show a lovely young woman - have often wondered why Wallis lost that - perhaps equal parts smoking and bitterness

Noël Coward (i think he was a playwrite) said that a statue should be erected to Mrs. Simpson on every village green in the land, because in extracting Edward she had saved the nation from disaster
I think Mr. Coward may have been correct. Edward VIII made no secret of his distaste for royal duties. In his brief time as king he neglected his duties constantly, often deputizing his brother Bertie to attend the "boring" events that were his job. He left the red boxes strewn about to where anyone could see them. They were lucky they didn't have a spy in their household, because otherwise any number of secrets would have been delivered to the enemy. And we're not even touching the fact that he was a Nazi sympathizer. As Prince of Wales Edward, or David, was handsome, charming, and very popular. But popularity has nothing to do with being a man of integrity who would do his duty and protect his country. Indeed, Mrs. Simpson did a great service to the UK. Three cheers for Mrs. Simpson!

In watching this I see that Prince Edward looks just like his grandfather the older he gets the more you see it. And the comment made about men wearing black ties and women wearing some kind of mourning clothes. Shows a mark of respect. Not for what the people were wearing when the Queen died last year.
