  • In this video, I am reacting to "Nothing Suits Me Like A Suit" from How I Met Your Mother musical episode Girls Versus Suits, sung by the broadway icon himself Neil Patrick Harris aka. Barney Stinson. This is part one of a new series on my channel where I will be reacting to the musical episodes of mainstream TV shows and ranking them in a tier list. What show should a react to next?

That said, this episode and the vocals were absolutely phenomenal. He's already so good live, but when you give him that studio touch he has a voice I envy.
Honestly there's no way Neil (let alone Josh Radnor or Jason Segel) was ever gonna let a musical episode go buy without doing it justice.
Also as a fun fact: Neil and Jason were notorious for constantly quoting/performing Le Miserables together on and off set. You can find a clip of them doing it for a talk show or something on youtube and it's GOOD

You should definitely react to "Once more with feeling" from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (S06E07). It is arguably the episode that popularized musical episodes on TV shows. The episodes also features Alysson Hannigan (Lily from HIMYM), besides the suits/jacket dance at 5:24 is a reference to "The Mustard" from the mentioned episode. (The actors don't have so much vocal training though).
PS.: Straight man, already new about NPH, but only found out after watching HIMYM musical episode

Okay, I gotta respond to an old comment. Is the choreography being an homage to Buffy a fact? Because knowing the creators were Buffy fans, I always wondered it might be. I even tried to find info on it at some point, but found nothing. Also since I know absolutely nothing about musicals, I thought that might be just a basic move and the jackets were just a coincidence. And if it was an homage, surely it would have been mentioned somewhere.

The actor who played Lilly in this also played Willow in “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer” and more specifically, their musical episode “Once More, with Feeling”. And she has said herself that she is not a strong singer, so they tried to give her small vocal parts that would be easy for her, as they did here.
The show “Magicians” had a sort of musical episode, and another episode with several songs in it, but if nothing else, you simply must hear the performance of “Under Pressure” (originally by Queen and David Bowie). The participants are in different places, where they each have their own problems going on, and they are linked by magic, with the song incorporating each location and moving smoothly between them for the different parts and then there are the places where they all sing together. It’s just so good. In fact, I think I need to go watch it again, right now.
Another thing I feel I should suggest: It’s not a musical episode, but there is an episode of “Doom Patrol” (a bizarre and delightful sort of superhero show) where the character Negative Man, whose powers cause him to have to be wrapped in a special bandaging the prevents his radiation from harming or killing those around him, is persuaded to sing, and it is fabulous! It helps that the actor, Matt Bomer, is an accomplished singer. I know it veers slightly off of “musical episodes” (as does this episode of “How I Met Your Mother”, to be honest), but it feels like it fits the essence of what you’re doing here. If nothing else, you should definitely watch it.

Other than the obvious Riverdale various musicals episodes Supernatural and Legacies also both had a musical episode that served as "homage". Jason Segal (Marshall) is actually a pretty strong singer for an actor who doesn't have a history of music. Obviously, most actors are going to pale next to NPH, but Jason Segal does have a history of singing on camera. Throughout the entire run of How I Met Your Mother, his little running gag is to sing dumb songs. Look up "Slapsgiving Song," for example.
He even sang a song in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the movie he wrote. And there's a video of him somewhere of him and NPH singing a song from Les Mis together.
I think this is just one of those things where everyone looks terrible next to someone so talented. Case in point: watch the movie Gangs of New York, which features like six or seven Academy Award actors...and Cameron Diaz. Now, Cameron Diaz is a completely average actress at best, but when you put her next to all of these amazing actors, she is terrible. You can say the same thing with NPH singing around the cast of HIMYM.
Also, Alyson Hannigan was also in this and Buffy, and she didn't feel comfortable singing at all, so she asks the writers (specifically for Once More With Feeling) to limit her singing.

Hey, I really like your videos so far, but I'm confused about one thing. Why do people always say that Girls vs Suits is HIMYM's musical episode? HIMYM doesn't HAVE a musical episode, what they do have is multiple songs during the whole series (I would suggest watching the songs performed by Robin, played by Cobie Smulders, they are really fun :)). I just feel it's a bit unfair to compare this to actual musical episodes :/ what you could maybe do is take a few of HIMYM's songs and just put them together? I don't know, but I think that watching the other songs would be a good idea :p

Could you, if you have never seen it/listened to it, maybe review ,,Elisabeth" the musical ?
(May sound odd, but it's an amazing austiran musical from the 90's)

Knowing NPH is homosexual, the Broadway parts are easy to see, him playing the womanizer on the show I think shows range so much more. Not sure if you've watched the series, but his husband is a recurring guest as well.

Also in the *really* obscure musical episode category Neil Patrick Harris also featured as The Music Meister in The Return of the Music Meister episode of the animated Batman: Bold and Beautiful. Only five or so songs though.
Not to mention his much more famous supervillain role in Dr Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog as the titular villain. Which is definitely a must watch/listen. It was written and performed during the 2007 writer's strike, originally as a set of three webisodes. In addition to the DVD and obligatory soundtrack (all available electronically now), they also produced a special commentary soundtrack called Commentary! The Musical which is of course itself a musical version of the commentary about the show: ruclips.net/video/dMIUj_nRxoY/видео.html

I have many straight friends who love theatre! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone. More so what I was getting at is I feel like there are many straight men who idolise the character Barney because he is such a womaniser. I was just curious to see how many of those people actually knew that NPH could also run circles around them in heels. I remember when I told my boyfriends friends this, it blew their minds.
