Company had several nice Expeditions with those. From new I was leery about them surviving RI winters. So every PM service we would Brakleen, lube and touch up paint them. Never had a failure to change out but they do get grimy.

4 years on mine...AMP Research running boards, I installed myself... still running really well....a shot of Rem Oil 3 times a year helps...they work pretty well in the heavy snow, sometimes can't pull up due to the frozen slush weight... wash them off a day later and they're good as new.

@@msyoung76cj7 Good luck, really. I would've loved to have gotten another diesel (also an owner of a bought-new 7.3), but since I don't need the towing capability, I couldn't justify the cost. But what really steered me away from it was what I learned. Keep up with the emissions stuff. I'd also invest in an aftermarket fuel filtration system. Read up on what's out there.

Kind of disappointed in the hinge design in what has to be the most hostile environment under the truck.
I think I would be attempting to add grease zerks to the moving parts.
When I used to plow I would make new, stainless pivot pins that I deep drilled and cross drilled and threaded a fitting into the end so that I could purge the hinge with grease periodically. If those stock pins rusted in place they were hell to get out.

As a contractor and fellow 6.7 Powerstroke owner....I have never seen a fellow contractor with electric side steps. This trim level / option is more target to a weekend warrior. Nevertheless, I agree with you completely see your perspective. One would think Ford would engineer these hinges with geese zerks are they are going to be in direct contact with the rain, salt, natural elements.

I feel like a good coating of fluid film or woolwax on the hinges and pins would help keep the moisture and crud out and keep the corrosion down. Shame in a way those aren’t made with stainless hardware or even zinc coated to help reduce the likelihood of them rusting and binding up.

It’s kinda sad you get stuck with problems from lack of owner maintenance. A little fluid film goes along ways. You must work at a good dealership. The douce at my local dealership wouldn’t even take care of the door not shutting recall cause it wasn’t happening at the time I brought it to them for it. My wife had to ride a few times holding onto the door so it didn’t open. I hope you and your family have a merry Christmas and a happy new year

Was never a big fan of those. Out here in Colorado, they get packed full of snow, ice and road debris in the winter time and will never retract or open. For those of us who use our truck in the outdoors, you get so much mud packed under the truck (especially during the hunting seasons) I don't trust them. When I got my '19, I specifically wanted the black, hard plastic ones as I knew they will get tore up. Sure enough during this 2nd rifle season for elk (after I harvested my bull) headed out in the dark, I dropped the left front tire in a 4' deep wash. The truck was resting on the left corner of the front bumper and the driver side step. Smashed the front bracket up and the board (didn't break) was was on an incline. Anyways, actually drove the truck out of the hole and finished that hunting season with battle damage. After the season, I was going to replace the drivers side with new, but was shocked at the cost. I just took the board and brackets off the truck. Heated the damaged brackets and straightened them up, replaced the damaged nutserts and reinstalled. Not exactly good as brand new (but darn close), functional and a great add on to my hunting story. Love the videos!

what area of the country are you in. I'm in upstate NY so I will definitely have this problem sometime. Can the pivot pins be removed? I have this crazy idea to figure out how to drill and tap for some zerk fittings so I can grease these things. great video.

Hey ARod, what are the wire harnesses on the outside of the frame above and behind the running boards? When you hit unlock, they energize. Are they for lighting? I have a 2020 F-250 Lariat and thought I'd like to have the factory power folding boards. Do you know of a way to buy them if they didn't come from the factory? Is the truck pre-wired?

Power running boards are not pre-wired if they did not come already on the truck. You can add them but it means building the harness, adding the module, buying the boards, and then programming through forscan or having a dealership turn them on. The brackets are not cheap, if you find a pull of set, make sure they are at least from a 17 model. Older 12 model F150 used only two hole brackets to mount to the truck and the connecting rods from front to back are different size. I'm not sure if the board itself is a different part number. Maybe ARod can help out with that.

  • @mcool4587

Tell you what I think? I thing your an awesome tech. I also think this is a terrible design as it places a moveable exposed hinge in a very vulnerable spot. Vulnerable to dirt, water, road debris and in your neck of the woods...salt. At $650 per side just for parts, perhaps Ford should use some kind of sealed O ring hinges like a chain on a dirt bike?

Uploader: "Are your running boards doing this?"
Me: "Oh man, it's a fucking American-made vehicle with too many, poorly-thought-out, gee whiz-type gizmos, designed for a public that can't seem to ever be satisfied, that will break way before they should."
Everybody else: "But we like that shit."
Manufacturers: "Well if we designed stuff to last, and didn't keep coming up with new shit, while figuring out ways to force it down the public's throat, by coming up with ever-increasing creative advertising intended to make John Q. Consumer feel like a loser unless he buys said shit, then we'd go out of business and our entire commodity-consuming, based-entirely-on-keeping-up-with-the-Jones consumeristic-driven economy, would fucking collapse!"
Me: "Well....., ok then. I guess we're all actually too stupid to understand the concept of building reliable vehicles just might result in an extremely strong brand loyalty, which could, just possibly, maybe even, create enough repeat business so you wouldn't have to keep coming up with new shit designed to make our ridiculously cushy existence on this planet even better than it now is..., so since that's obviously not possible, well then, just keep doing what you're doing I guess. Who cares that we'll have to continue to throw money away to keep all the technology on these vehicles working correctly, once it's out of warranty, but while still having a payment. I also suppose that we're simply not able..., ya know, what with all the advances we've made in the last 50 years..., to actually build a vehicle in which all the shit would continue to operate the way it originally did when new, for some years beyond the point where we own said vehicle outright. Guess that's just not possible any more, huh? But I bet that 30 year-old Sears washer and dryer I sold 10 years ago for $100 is still working today. And then I also wonder where all this broken shit that doesn't last but a few years goes??? Hmmm... Oh that's right...it just magically disappears."
Everybody else: "See, you DO understand!"

      @gr8guitarplayer 4 года назад +1

@@PowerStrokeTechTalkwARod And what? The warranty is free? Here's a thought for ya: I used to own a Lincoln Mark LT. Its factory warranty was 50k miles, as opposed to the 36k for an F150. Sooo..., what? The Lincoln had a better warranty because it was...... wait for it..... Built Better??? Believe that, and I've got some land to sell you. That truck was simply a re-badged, few more bells & whistles, and a little more bling, F150, and the extra 14k of warranty was...., yep, you guessed it, rolled into the extra cost of the truck. Just.Like.On.Any.Vehicle. How MUCH $ is factored into the cost, IS a factor of how well it is built, but you're going to pay for shit breaking no matter what. I love Ford trucks, but since I'd rather pay more for better reliability, until Honda comes up with a truck that rivals a Ford, I try to stay away from Ford factory-created luxury items, because Ford simply cannot, or chooses not to (probably the latter), build enough reliability into their trucks. Just sold my recently-deceased brother's 5 year old F150, and the LCD screen was toast. 5 years. Sorry, that's unacceptable.
