@@spiritualanarchist8162 They still use applause signs. With television like this, they always have a director that stands on the side making sure there are claps, laughs and applauses. If its not loud enough, they do a re-take. So for the audiance, its literally best to do as told, or otherwise you end up spending a whole hour extra just doing a reshoot of the same thing you already watched just to get a decent applause.

This enthusiastic and 100% authentic science teacher reminds me of my 1970 Abington Pennsylvania Senior High School very, very cool science teacher, Mr. Thomas, with whom I wish I had maintained contact after graduating! Mr. Thomas was so contagiously enthusiastically physically and verbally expressive that I think he would have been unable to speak if you tied his hands behind his back. He was THE VERY BEST TEACHER I HAD THAT YEAR! Thanks a million times over, Mr. Thomas, wherever you are!

It was hardly visible but I saw those glass containers in the oil. I knew there was something in there. Jimmy found it boring but I really liked this weird light travelling fact. I didnt know light travels at different speed through things, I thought it was constant.
Regina Phalange That's a common misconception. The speed of light is constant relative to any observer, but it can change it literal speed by going through different objects. Light will for example travel with 3×10^8 m/s through the vacuum of space and with (a quick guess) 2.9×10^8 m/s through glass. But no matter how fast you travel, the light will always reach you in the same time.
Technically it always travels at the same speed but as it is absorbed / remitted by the molecules in a material it gets delayed. Like a race car that has to make lots of pit stops. The denser the molecules are the more it is ‘slowed down’

I get the Kimmel criticism through this thread. But this first experiment has nothing to do with the speed of light. It is light refraction, the measure of how different substances bend light. When you put one item into another with the same refractive index, that item seems invisible. That's what happens with the oil and pyrex, not changing the speed of the light.
