It's the same speed as a MP5 submachine gun with a little extra gunpowder aka plus p charge.
This was a really interesting contrast from Stephen Colbert. Jimmy makes sure to make it look and sound cool and fun, and Stephen knows you can just nerd-out and keep viewers engaged.

Yay Purdue! I too go there, but for Wildlife, not polytechnics
In my college physics class we did a very similar experiment with launching ping pong balls out of a vacuum. Our professor said it would launch out at the speed of sound (768 MPH). He asked if there was a volunteer to take the hit from the ping pong ball. I did and, let me tell you, it left a mark, but it was still pretty cool.
