Supertrax Magazine Co-Publisher Motorhead Mark Lester evaluates Ski-Doo's 2014 Renegade featuring the all-new triple cylinder 900 ACE (Advanced Combustion Engine).
Nice honest review. I've driven the sled and have truly enjoyed it. As a 2-Stroke rider I was impressed with this unit. The "Modes" work well, especially for the Novice rider included children. With approximately 20lbs difference only in the weight this is a great 4-stroke (Compared to the 2-stroke 600 ETEC). No oil, long life engine, great on fuel.....this should be a winner for Ski-Doo!!!
We bought 2 and we love them :) not super fast but very quiet and has lots of torque
I am enjoying my 900 ACE Renegade much more than my Polaris 600 Rush. The 900 ACE is very quick, responsive, and powerful. Low and Mid Range, I feel, has more power than the 600 2-stroke. Once you go over 60mph, however, you do feel the shortcomings of the engine. I would still choose this engine over a 600 any day though. I love it.
Perfect sled for NY trails. 15-60 mph is where you ride all day long. You need the torque to get you from corner to corner in the NY twisty trails. And it is quiet and not fatiguing to ride. Want to race your buddies on the lake? Go buy a different machine.
All about useable trail power with this sled, 85mph is plenty for me.
at clarkson university we are trying to develop a 900 ace turbo for production. It made 110hp on low boost and ran out of maf
Turbo is fun! But current yamaha 1000 cc, has a factory made kit at 270 hp.
See my reply above. This exact same engine in the PWC market is making 109hp on a reflash on pump gas. Turbo kits are getting to 130hp easily and when pushed nudging 200hp.
My dealer told me his top selling engines are the 800 Etec and the 900 ACE . . . .
I know this is an older post.. But will changing the gearing to match that of 90hp two strokes from the 90's give you 100mph at wot. or match the power of the 650cc 2strokes of years gone by?
Perfect for what its made for I'd get one probably a lot of hidden potential in it to just like the 1200
Not being biased but I rode with one today and My Polaris IQ Turbo LXT can spank it very easily. My buddy let me ride it and the handling is awesome and suspension spot on. I might have to go this way if Polaris drops the 4 stroke from their line up. As of right now that is on the table unless they are hiding the unveil of a more efficient non turbo 4 stroke. And they have some competition out there for sure....
we just got 2 renegade x 800 and love them i might be getting this sled for my son not to fast like the 800 :)
To all the bashing back and forth on Yamaha vs Ski-doo 4 strokes:
There are plus's and minus's to both mfg's in this arena. IMHO the Ski-Doo has the nicer riding and handling chassis when you compare the ACE 900 to a Phazer 500. As for the engines, Yamaha has a 2 hole 500 efi that makes around 80 HP, the Doo has one more hole and 400 more cc's to make 10 more HP. No question that Yamaha is the leader in 4 stroke engine tech....and to the Scandinavian that thinks the 500 Yamaha is an unreliable motor....not sure where you have been but you are wrong. What Yamaha could use is a more trail rider friendly chassis with a good ride and wind protection, storage...etc. Another thing I prefer on all Yamaha's are their clutches and belt endurance. The Doo's clutching stinks in comparison to a Yamaha as does Cat and even Polaris...the once leader in this arena. The reverse cam secondary is easy to tune, take apart, long lasting and easy to change belts on even though changing belts is rare on a Yamaha. They easily last 5,000 plus miles and cost about 1/2 to 1/3 of the competition. Most people can't deny Yamaha has the engines, but I have to agree that Doo has the ride and chassis. The only thing is their bulkheads can't take a hit like a Yamaha and tear apart like paper. There is a price to pay for lightness. I have a friend who's neighbor bought a 900 ACE Renegade and he did ride it recently. He did say the 900 is real peppy in the woods and keeps right up with a 600 Doo 2 stroke until you hit a long straight away or a lake. The wireless throttle is cool too allowing you to spin the lever any which way for your comfort.
Hi All I own the 2015 version of the above sled , was wondering if anyone was riding up over 7,000 feet and if you are using RAMP 742 Part Number 417223918, and if you noticed much of a difference?
Never would I ever rent a sled with speed limiter!
Wow this sled is just amazing! I need this! (If I had enough money lol)
I'm very confused with how this gets such low horsepower for a 900cc four stroke. I came off a 2010 Yamaha Phazer rated at 80 HP with only 500cc. It is interesting that the fuel consumption is similar with the two engines at low- to mid-20s. I guess it's all relative.
Joe Levandoski yamaha phazer mountain sled 3.65m track. 76.5hp on dyno, wet wheight 263kg. chassis can't do work because the tunnel is to weak. lynx ranger 49 900 ace utility sled. 90hp (97.5hp on dyno) 4.14m track 255kg wet weight. and lynx is reinforced to withstand heavy work load. 900 ace with reprogramming has 109-110hp. and it make hp and torque at low rpm. where's phazer doesn't.
Joe Levandoski Phazer 37 foot pounds of torque at 9800rpm. 78 hp at 11500 rpm.
900 ace 66.4 foot pounds of torque at 7300 rpm and 97.3 hp at 7900rpm.
600 ace 42.7 foot pounds of torque at 6900 rpm. And 60 hp at 7500 rpm. so phazer has less torque than the 60hp 600 ace. clearly hp isn't everything.
@@vectraB97 Ace is junk! you can get hp increase with 500 cc phazer motor as well. and comparing the displacements and that the phazer is smaller engine it is by far a better made engine and superior reliability!
@@jmangames5562 What have you been smoking? Ace is 10 times more reliable than the phazer motor. It's based upon a unreliable dirt bike engine. Worst 4stroke Yamaha has ever installed in a snowmobile. I know several people who owned them and hate that engine.
@@jmangames5562 Phazer motor was so terrible that Yamaha replaced it with a arctic cat single cylinder 400cc stroke 😃 meanwhile BRP use 900ace in everything. Side-by-side atv, 3wheel motorcycle, snowmobiles jet skis and more. This Yamaha engine was discontinued for good reason. Most Yamaha engines are good. This 500cc is the exception..
Yamaha is going to smoke it on the strip...
stopatnothen 900 ace is mostly for utility, trail cruisers and touring sleds. it needs turbo to be considered performance engine.. 900 ace has 154hp stock hp in CAN AM X3 UTV.
stopatnothen Phazer 37 foot pounds of torque at 9800rpm. 78 hp at 11500 rpm.
900 ace 66.4 foot pounds of torque at 7300 rpm and 97.3 hp at 7900rpm.
600 ace 42.7 foot pounds of torque at 6900 rpm. And 60 hp at 7500 rpm.
Who cares, it is not made for the strip. Yamaha blows anyways.
600 etec will pull away from the 900 ACE corner to corner. that is a fact.
mike carr 600 Etec has great fuel economy and little oil usage.
Np way yahmaha is rhe industry leader in fourstikes they have 172 hp out of a non adpirated motor on there apex and shity kittys z1turbo is 182 thats pretty stout for yahmaha being non charged ive seen charged apexes and nytros deliver 320hp with ease.
Yes, Yamaha has been making 4-strokes since 2002 i think... :)
jamienoah222 wow, what an absolute butcher of words and numbers. YAMAHA'S apex is not 172hp, and is naturally aspirated, not non aspirated. cats 1100 turbo is rated at 177 hp not 182. turbo yamaha's can absolutely achieve 320hp with ease, so can the turbo cats. they have them up to almost 700 actually
I know yahmahas can i have a 240 hp nytro
I worked with osp racing we made a 700hp apex holds the world record for quarter mile so whats your point i hate cats
caged lion who cares? I sure don’t. This is a review of a ski doo trail sled. Your comments are irrelevant, go brag somewhere else.
600 etec is a lot more for only 500$
I would take my yamaha phazer rtx any day. Same hp with only 500 cc and a twin engine.
actually 10 less HP and they ride like crap...
Gabe Corey
Based on what? Skidoo ride like crap, because I said so? ;-)
There is a factory made turbo kit for the phazer. 500cc and 120 hp !
Tuu Pow haha...exactly!
Yep, I have a Phazer MTX, it's a 500cc 4-stoke, custom air-box and exhaust, had it dyno'd at 89 hp. Just saying, eat your heart out Ski-doo. And does 74 with a 144 track.
Ski doo has great 2 stroke sleds but if you want a four stroke just buy a Yamaha honestly, there is a reason they only make 4 strokes
Lol.... Yamaha doesn't even make 4 stroke snowmobiles you Homer. They are an engine builder and they shove it into a Textron/cat chassis and slap some stickers on it. Not only that, but the buyers have spoken. Ski Doo sells so many more 4 stroke snowmobiles than both Arctic cat and Yamaha combined that it isn't even fair. Please, enlighten everybody and explain why they should just stick with yamaha.
85mph is slow for top speed, but I think its a great sled for the wife.
Brad Van 85mph isn't slow. dirtbike tracks are usually designed to keep the average speed below 37.3mph. speed is relative. It depends on the surface you drive on and what you feel comfortable with. falling of the sled in 85mph could hospitalize anyone for weeks, death accident isn't unlikely. I crashed a 500cc dirtbike in 40mph. it wasn't comfortable at all. The rear frame on my dad's dirtbike had to be straightened out with a truck crane. I belive it was a 1986 ktm 500cc with chromoly steel frame. I couldn't keep the rear wheel planted out of the corner, so it wobbled over the bumps and sent my flying sideways of the bike. It knocked the air out of my lungs. since I landed on the chest. it felt like 30 seconds where I couldn't breathe. LOL. I did ride the next week and I didn't go to any doctor because I only felt a little beat up all over.
ill keep my 800 etec :)
2-stroke is so 1980... ;)
4 strokes suck ball slow and heavy never will be as good a 2 strokes
Cameron Schuelke
Dumb comment you need to ride one... What do you ride? My 750 cc IQ Turbo smokes by most 600 2 strokes. so where are you drawing your conclusion from? Ignorance is bliss, You must be very happy.
only yamaha knows how to build a reliable 4 stroke
your going to give a 14 year old a 500 pound sled to get unstuck, nice
stopatnothen 900 ace renegade is 2.65pounds lighter than a phazer mtx. wet weight vs wet weight. larger gas tank and more range on the ski doo, also 5cm wider track. if anyone gets stuck it's the heavy phazer with 35.6cm wide track.
ski-doo the name the jews love..
