Hi Jamie. I know what you are talking about. I was born in India with parents who were doing quite well and had servants doing every job for us. They took me to school carrying my school bag, washing clothes and dishes, cooking 3 meals a day, going shopping for groceries, making beds and standing close to the dining table to serve our food. Worked for a film distribution company. When I came to Australia with $7.00 per person. We were 5 in our family we stayed with my Uncle for a few weeks. Went to the employment agency and got a job in a plywood factory splitting sheets of wood and sweeping. I had not seen a broom in my life till then. Put down my pride and started work and things got better. Like you said it was not demeaning to do any job and no one looked down on you. We had work parties and everyone was the same. Even today I feel really bad for the servants who worked for us. We were very kind to them. If I could I would wait on them to thank them for what they did for us. A job well done is most important no matter what it is. Take care. 🙏🏼
Thank you for sharing your experiences. It is important that other Indians learn about this. Well done.

Went into nostalgia when I started working back in 2008 for 3,000 rupees and my family applauded 😀😀 and they meant it. They were earning in lacs but they said 'don't worry, everyone has to start somewhere'.
Nice !🙂
Wish everyone has a thinking like this... AMEN... but first we have to start it from ourselves..
Jamie make more on the concept that no job is small, it will help change India's Perspective of jobs
You are amazingly so grounded and humble. A rare son of lucky India IMO. Stay blessed!
Thank you so much for posting this video, Jamie! I'm an Indian born & raised in the U.S. & I can't tell you how valuable this lesson is not just to Indians, but everyone in general. Kudos! 👍🏻

Very true Jamie. Dignity of labor is ingrained into Western culture. In fact here in NZ, professions that are generally looked down upon in India, like plumber/carpenter/electrician etc. are some of the highest paying professions!! Hopefully, someday this appreciation that no work is big or small, will find its way into the Indian psyche.
Good bro. I seen billionaire chinese friend packing goods. I asked him why you doing this? He have 250 workers and still he do packing if some worker is on leave.
Neutral feedback .we need to enhance this quality in our society.
Right bro
Excellent choice of topic for the target audience - very instructive. I graduated from an IIT and am settled in the US for several decades now - there are so many things in the US that are so admirable but hard to understand for Indians who have never had this kind of first hand cross-cultural exposure.
Sir....you speak so pure Hindi just like your dad.... .....I love your dad's acting too....

Thank You Sir for sharing such an Insight about your phase of life after completing academic studies. Yes We have to start from zero at times . No work and no one is small . Work is worship ( God bless all aspiring ones in their pursuit in life )
Yes Jamie, your experiences are similar to mine. I am a lot older than you and arrived in the US from Pakistan in 1982. I went through all manner of odd jobs while attending university part-time. In the end, I joined the US Army for 4 years and this proved to be the pivotal point in my life as a new immigrant. It was here that I first stepped out of our sub-culture and was immersed headlong (without any preparation, LOL!) into the American culture. I met folks of all cultures and races and travelled all over the US. I was also stationed in Mannheim, Germany for a year. Remember, the Cold War was still ongoing. It was here in the military that I was introduced to the system of establishing "credit," something I was not familiar with and also learned how the system actually functioned.
This was tremendously helpful as I was on my own and was forced to learn new things. I left the military after my enlistment term ended and used the GI Bill to finish my college. I am 60 now and have done fairly well for myself and am grateful for all I have.
However, I will offer some observations/advice here. The culture of the Subcontinent in general is quite caste/social status based, no matter what your religion and this places artificial limits on a person at times. Not a good thing. But just as you mentioned, there is quite a bit of loneliness in the US as well. People are mostly isolated and as humans we are "pack animals" and do not do well mentally when alone for long periods of time. This was the greatest thing I missed: My social and family life as I was coming along.
The other thing I would like to say is this: Take full advantage of whatever opportunity the capitalist system offers you to advance but do not get caught up in rampant consumerism and hedonism. Live well and comfortably but do not go into debt for the sake of status. Sadly, a great many Americans live from paycheck to paycheck all their lives because they have been indoctrinated into mindless spending on mindless "stuff." This is where I believe that our culture and upbringing of frugality and economy shines. Good Luck young man!
5:32 My ans wd have been only son of Tom Altar can do that ,its parenthood of that ground to earth personality which can teach कोई भी काम छोटा या बड़ा नही होता।
You are right Bhai.In America they treat every job as equal 👍
I'm glad you followed your passion, Jamie Bhai.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Lots of love to you
Thank you
I completely agree that no job is big or small but at the same time I think that people should learn what the real life of West/abroad is, and realize where you have a better life, better future and most importantly where you are truly happy. Life is short, so instead of living someplace where you are just living to look good in front of society, it is better to live where you are truly at home and happy.
Struggle truly key of success
absolutely
Are yaar aap society ke bahot bade issue itni ease ke saath apna experience bataya i mean hats off sir HATS OFF
Will motivate us all
So touched to hear this Jamie. So humbled! Growing up with you knowing the kind of blessed lives we have gotten to live tucked in the cozy corners of the mountains in Mussoorie, listening to this brings so much joy to my heart. Its experiences like these that shape our characters and teach us some of the most important lessons of our lives. Having lived a few years in the States myself I find it easier empathising with you. You are a strong soul buddy! Stories are Us.
Jaime bhai tum jab kisi k samne hindi bologe to wo shocked hi hoga
Bas yahi 1 factor, ki koi kam chota nahi hota, yahi decisive factor hai India and USA ke bich, and even other foreign, developed countries ke bich!!
This point may seem small or insignificant to some people, but this is exactly the attitude we actually need so badly to develop ourselves and our nation!
Yaha hum mein se bahut se log is line ki philosophy jhadte hai, lekin dil se koi believe nahi karta is line mein!!..
Anyways, a very refreshing video from your side, thanks!!
Thanks
Hello Sir. Thank you for sharing your story with us. I really enjoy your style of storytelling. Thanks a lot and best wishes to you.
Thanks, Parth
Very good episode. Absolutely needed for most of us Indians to learn.
Jamie bhai ! You are very humble and down to earth, your character is sheer reflection of your dad.
Hi Jamie, thank you for putting this. As an Indian I didn't have any desire to go abroad for permanent settlement as many Indians have. But I highly admire many aspects of western society and culture in general. As you said that all kinds of work and professionals are respected there and it is just seen as your profession. People there aren't too intrusive and there is a thing called personal space or privacy unlike in Indian society. Here it is a common thing to ask very personal questions majority of times. Though I will never go to America I appreciate many good things about their society. Whereas in India there are many kind of works or jobs which are looked down upon.
Kam to koi Chhota manna hi nhi chahiye chahe India Ho Ya America bcoz we Indian believe that work is worship.or worship kbi chhoti Ya badi nhi hoti. Thank u sir for sharing your experiences. It will give us lots of inspirations.
Love listening to your personal stories.
Nice ... motivational information Jamie Bhai... Thanks
Aap toh #MadeInIndia Jamie Bhai। Youth just loves you। Aapki story kaafi inspiring hein।
This is a really inspiring one. Wish people understand the same in India coz this idea that everyone is important n every skill is important n no work is less important,is an age old concept of India or Bharat. Lots of love n respect Jamie. It is this experience at the grass root level that connects with so many followers now. Atleast I connect with all ur contents n really enjoy. All the best for ur future.👌👌👍👍💖💖💖 Rise n shine.😊

Great stories Jamie. Love listening to you’re experiences. One thing I’ll thank Bollywood for is that I learnt Hindi from it. If not, being a non- Indian I wouldn’t be able to understand or appreciate you’re videos fully! May I say in the thumbnail pic you look like a young Paul McCartney!

Bilkul sahi message dia hai aapne jamie bhaai. Keep inspiring us with ur experiences...🙂
Jamie, another lovely video! I loved your video interviewing your uncle on your late father and this one is very informative. A lot of Indians need to understand what life in America is truly like. Yes, the US is an individualistic culture but I have found that once you break down the reserve, you can build a strong network of friends and support system. But I do love the dignity of labor and the work ethic of this country.
My first culture shock as a student here was how bold the students were. One of my professors was an esteemed academician and practitioner. In his class, he would get challenged by the American students (I was diffident and scared). He would respond with humor and it was shocking because in India I’m sure the professor would say “chup baitho akkal nahin hain tumko.” This was refreshing to me because as a young student I always questioned everything and my father never shot me down but professors did! I enjoyed this a lot about the US.
Your analysis and comparison as an Indian citizen of American heritage is spot on! I truly believe that we have our janmabhoomi and karmabhoomi. I believe that I was born in India because I had to learn things about my rich culture and traditions but my karma is in America, because I didn’t relate to anything in India as a professional but US felt right and at home right from the moment I set my foot. I feel that the Universe or existence presents opportunities steering you on to the path you’re supposed to be on. Your karma is in india and that’s why it felt right and at home for you! Please continue making videos like these. You epitomize everything lovely about Indian culture and your inherited lovely Midwestern values and things that make me love America so much! ❤️
Thanks for sharing your feedback!
Mera motivation up krne ke liye... thanks....

Your voice 😍😍..
Tone amazing
Mujhe apka voice bahat hi pasand aaya 😍
Hi Jamie. whatever u mentioned is correct, but there is another perspective too..People in India also do the so-called small type jobs, if they have to earn and run their families..but the "log kya kahenge" comes in...hard working people exist everywhere..aapne yeh bhi dekha hoga ki Indians work more than 8 hours per day, sometimes for 12-14 hours too, but dont get paid that much as their counterpart in foreign countries, for the same work.
Aapne to motivate kar diya Jamie bhaiya

Very nice to hear that you decided to come back. Around six years ago I had tried to search where Tom Alter's kids had settled, and the google search said USA, I had felt a bit sad... So happy to see you like your roots in India too. And it is fun to hear your Indian reacts to your Hindi story. Tom Alter, Ruskin Bond, and William Dalrymple, three people that India treasures, so happy their children also feel that connection.
Good job....I proud of u big brother....love u.
Good to see you Jamie..👍👍👍
Thanks You Sir For sharing your experiences.....
