For anyone on the later versions of photoshop, if you click that gear icon at 4:28 and the click legacy brushes, you can then get access to the square brush.

FYI in 2023: If you are on the step at 7:58m and apply a filter, but the white smart layer is not present after applying the filter, instead, before creating the white mask on this smart object layer, apply the filter first. Then apply the white mask to the layer, brush as desired, then resume at this time mark. There was no arrow drop-down expansion icon for me while following the video order of operations.
Finally, a good photoshop tutorial on youtube. Keep up the good work!

Question I am unable to get the smart filter layer on pixel 3 and in the liquify screen the image doesnt show just the squares in black and white. im using cc2018. Any tips ?

Im trying to make this effect but instead of using the same image for the pixel effect i want to show someone els face as the pixel effect. hard to explain i will show my end result when done. BTW(By the way) whats your email?
when I follow you I get to the Liquify stage but I cant use the tool for some reason
I have a problem, i dont have that big list of brush options, the last thing on the bottom of my brush settings is replace brush, i dont have that square brush option
You can make your own custom brush. A square is super easy- Just drag with the rectangular Marquee tool, fill with black on a new layer, and go Edit > Define brush preset.

Rasterize the layer. You can't liquify a smart object.
