WHAT IS A STUMP BUCKET? STUMP REMOVAL WITH A TRACTOR!

- We came up with the GWT Mini Stump Wrecker a couple of years ago now, when we saw a lack of stump buckets designed for smaller tractors. And we love smaller tractors! Today is the first time we've used the SSQA version of our Mini stump bucket and we have it on the Summit TX25. It's a really, really good match and made for quick work on the five stumps we attacked.

Good Works Tractors is happy to be sponsored by Rim Guard Solutions! This is perhaps the most well-known ballast brand on the market today. Rim Guard goes right inside your tires, so it's out of the way, it doesn't freeze, and doesn't corrode. It's made from natural materials, so it's safe around livestock and pets if it spills out. Rim Guard liquid ballast adds more weight to the back side of your tractor improving stability, loader performance, and power to the ground. Find your closest dealer at bit.ly/3d0whX0

Love my GWT stump bucket! Soon, I will be sending Courtney a pictorial of all the boulders it has helped me extract over the past year. It has cleaned up my property so much and given me so many boulders for mulch beds, stone walkways, and boulder fences. It is amazing. Just take your time, go slow, and before you know it, boulder extracted. 🙂
You had one of the first if I recall. Glad to hear it’s still treating you well!
Interesting you’ve used it on boulders! I’ve dug a variety of bushes. Most unique thing I dug was probably our new fire pit. Much better than using a shovel. Our dirt is like concrete!
@Phil D yes sir! You can't just go at them like stumps. A little evaluation and planning is needed upfront.
First, you want to ensure the boulder is not too large for the stump bucket (and tractor, of course) and that its true size is not hidden from you in the ground. I have a rod that I hammer around the periphery just to ensure this first. Luckily, our ground is not hard at all, so it is not much effort to do this. I have a hammer drill that aides in this process.
If the boulder is not too large, I then start digging around its periphery with the stump bucket little by little. You have to have some patience, but before you know it, the boulder is exposed enough that I can push it free with the stump bucket. I always make sure when pushing the boulder never to have the cylinders extended outward to much just to prevent recoil damage (bending) them.
Once the boulder is moving freely, I then come with the grapple and pluck it out. I will do 8-10 boulders at a time with the stump bucket and then change to the grapple to pluck them out.
Now, for the large boulders, I will still use the stump bucket to dig around their periphery and once exposed enough I will drill 1.5" holes in it about 16" deep every 1-2' and then pour Dexpan into the holes to crack it up. I then use the stump bucket to push apart the cracked sections and then the grapple to move them where I want to.
This process has worked great for me. Yes, it does take a bit more time probably than having an excavator would, but I love being on the tractor, so it is a little extra time well spent. 🙂
Courtney, I don’t subscribe to but a handful of channels. Yours is one, and I love it when I get a sub notification from you! I think you are doing an awesome job and a tremendous service to anyone who owns a tractor or skid steer. Keep up the great work and God bless my friend!
Very cool, I appreciate it Marty! Have a great weekend!
Great video, fun watching stumps getting dug up! It’s amazing what those little tractors can do with a proper attachment and this GWT mini stump wrecker is legit! I own one and use it! They are great and they are made in the USA 🇺🇸!!! Get one you won’t be disappointed!! Keep up with the great videos and products GWT!👊🏻
Awesome, great to hear! Thanks for your review!
Not disputing the effectiveness of the tool, but it looks hard on both the tractor driveline and the loader frame, which for stump removal neither is designed to endure 💁♂️~
That stump bucket is doing a really nice job.
Now you have the fun job - work site rehabilitation.
Oh yeah, got the stumps out of there now and holes backfilled. Once it dries out a bit, we'll till and seed. Fun little project :)
This was a fantastic video showing the stump bucket being used; best one thus far that I've seen on your channel. Thanks, Courtney!
Even with a 12,000 lbs skid steer I have had to cut each hickory sprout off with the individual teeth on the bucket.
I can see how and why this tool would be extremely useful. I’m sure that I will get one as soon as I have my newer tractor purchased. Great idea and great content, thank you!
Thanks for watching Carl!
Mine is being delivered today! Can't wait to give it a try. I have something like 14 stumps to remove. From 2" to 16" diameter. It's going to be fun!
Nice touch at the very end, perfect.
Glad you liked it Keith!
Nice job 👍 I have been thinking about getting a stump bucket myself and I like the way yours look 👍🚜😎
I recommend it 😂
I really like that stump wrecker bucket design allot of versatility there. The only thing that I can say Courtney no time to be standing around get that mess cleaned up you just made LOL
Haha, I did make a mess!
I think that looks like an awesome attachment for a small tractor. I'm seriously looking at the Summit tractor also. Great pairing of equipment you are using. Another great video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching Ken and glad you enjoyed!
Loved the background music for the first part of the video!
Yeah me too, one of my favorite tracks we play
Very impressed with this stump bucket
Glad you like it Tom, thanks for watching!
Nice to see this video on removing stumps, since I just ordered the HD bucket on Friday! Great to see the scripture at the end too!
Haha awesome, good timing indeed!
Hi Courtney,
I have to say that is a nice piece of equipment to have around, I believe I bought mine two years ago pretty much when you started production of them. I've used mine many a time and have had great success with it, beats using a shovel lol 🤣. Just want to say proud to be an owner of one. Many more projects are coming up for the stump wrecker. Keep up the excellent video's very informative.
Great video I did get the backhoe with my 1025r but wow am I impressed will definitely be referring the people I know that didn’t get one keep up the great work alway look forward to a new GWT video
I received my JD. Quick attach stump wrecker yesterday, put it on today and tried to go right at it without thinking about it. It. Eventually it dawned on me that you still have to dig around the stump and cut up the roots a little bit just like you had to in the old days with a shovel and a saw, but once I figured that out everything went fine.
I just wish I thought to check out the demo on this video first!
Courtney love your videos just ordered the mini stump bucket, cannot wait to get it home to try it out on my stumps.
Thank you sir, hope you enjoy it!
Lots of fun, like you said take your time and you will get it. Much faster and easier than a pickaxe too
Definitely, I enjoy it. Pretty satisfying work and doesn't take that long.
Mr. Courtney another wonderful video! Thanks for the heads up on the gear setting to quicken the video, I learned something new so today is going to be a very good day! Did I miss who won the grease gun whilst playing with the gear? Congrats on the winner! We did hire a young man to bush hog about 3 acres and remove the multitude of stumps, about 20, on the new property. He owns a very heavy skid steer, big boy tractor and backhoe. It was about $1200, he’s extremely reasonable as our new neighbor paid $700 to have her field bush hogged for $700 and she says it’s less than two acres. This was just last year, end of Summer. He had to leave the big 3 ½ foot diameter stump as we didn’t have anything to back fill it and the rains had started, so he couldn’t go get any soil unfortunately. I don’t own a backhoe nor a bush hog so it had to be hired out. If I had one of your stump buckets, I could have saved a bit of money and had fun doing it!
I can see that stump wrecker being very helpful with creating a Hugelkulture garden and using those stumps and fallen logs and limbs, something I am considering doing once we get a tractor shed built. It would be much quicker with your stump bucket than the regular bucket, I think. We have a plethora of rocks we are discovering and I’m glad to read from another viewer that their stump bucket does well with them as I was concerned about damaging the saw teeth. I may have to put it on my wish list…
Glad you enjoyed Elaine! Sounds like a heck of a deal with the hired out work. A rare find these days!
Grease gun winners will be announced as soon as I get back from vacation :) ☀️
@@GoodWorksTractors hope your in sunny warm Florida and your family has a great time!
I just bought one and in 1 hour removed 5 stumps!! One nearly as tall as me. I didn’t believe to start with but now I’m a believer
Sweet, it's a handy tool!
Great video, I made one that's longer than yours and shorter than the Titan. I'm getting ready to go out and play with it today.
My HD wrecker is serving my needs just fine. I have some very large stumps I have yet to tackle with my Orange M4-070… but thinking it will be ok…. Will send along pics once weather clears enuf for me to start…
Send them pics when you can, have fun!
Okay Courtney, you convinced me that I need to buy one.
Hehe, it worked!
Love it, maybe one day I'll get one 👍🏻
Handy to have!
What do you think about adding a toothed edge on the bottom of each side wall of the bucket?
Cool idea, cost to do so would be high...tough enough to keep prices down already. Perhaps a bolt on option?
@@GoodWorksTractors Just a random thought while enjoying the video. I am currently shopping for a tractor and have been looking at different attachments I need to go with it.
I have a nasty grove of Black Locust trees I want to get rid of so a stump bucket is on the list. I hope to be ordering one from ya soon!!! 🙂
Let's see that small tractor take on a 27" pine stump if it can!
I just picked up my 2nd stump wrecker! I now have the original, and the HD!!!!
You da man, thanks Aaron!
@Good Works Tractors when you have great products
At good prices with outstanding service, it's a no-brainer!
Need one 😮 As allways great video want a cabled summit 🙏 🤔👍👴🐕🚜🇺🇸👏🤠
Thank you sir :)
@@GoodWorksTractors cab model
I love the attachment, but your yard is now a moonscape.
Haha, not anymore. I've got the stumps gone and backfilled. Once it dries out, I'll till and seed. Easy peasy.
I have a JD 2210. Are you able to get a backhoe for this little beast?
I'll be buying a stump bucket from you when I get my Summit TX25.
Great video, Courtney! To me the biggest drawback to a stump bucket is the remaining hole and burnout marks left by the tractor to repair. Perhaps it would not be as big a deal if you are prepping a whole area for rehabilitation.
Definitely. You will have damage, but totally depends. This area was going to have to get reworked anyways, so no biggie. If just trenching or digging holes for planting, you don't have this kind of damage. It's just when you're against a lot of resistance.
@@GoodWorksTractors and having a landscape rake on the 3pt would take care of things IMO
We had a diseased beech about 26” diameter removed right by the shop and hired a guy to grind the stump. Still leaves a bit of work with all the chips.
Really enjoy your videos and hoping to get a better tractor than my 8N Ford next year when I retire. I have a few attachments but really would like a bucket and grappler. Seriously looking at the Summit and hopefully they have closer dealer from me in NE Kansas than 3 hours soon. Keep the videos coming.
Courtney, love your channel I just recently purchased a new Yanmar compact tractor. I’ve been watching all your videos since I started shopping for a tractor. I was so excited to hear you are releasing a Yanmar stump bucket. I will be buying one as soon as they are available
Hey Matt, glad to hear it. Here's the Yanmar listing if you want to sign up for the waitlist notification. www.goodworkstractors.com/product/gwt-stump-wrecker-mini-stump-bucket-for-yanmar-quick-attach/
@@GoodWorksTractors Hey Courtney, I’m already signed up, any idea on an ETA?
Thanks
Matt
@@Zfirearms Cool, hopefully a mont or two is all
@@GoodWorksTractors perfect, hopefully I’m front of the line 🤞
@@GoodWorksTractors Hey Courtney, I have been trying to be a patient, but I am like a kid on Christmas morning. Any word on the availability of the Yanmar quick attach stump bucket? Thank you
I gotta admit... didn't think those would as good as they do. I'm now thinking maybe that would work great for transplanting smaller trees?
Yeah, we've sold a few to nurseries and Christmas tree farms for that main purpose. I haven't tried it myself, but sounds like it's coming in handy for them.
So glad to hear y'all are coming out with a yanmar QA version! When will it be available? Which size do you recommend for a sa424? Keep up the good work guys!
First couple test units in the field, making some minor modifications for fitment. I think it'll hit the market in a couple months, maybe sooner. We'll only be making the Mini for now. Primarily targeting the SA324 and SA424, might be a few others it works on as well.
The only issue I have with my stump bucket Vrs the backhoe is the Tractor does allot more damage to the surrounding area where the Backhoe is more confined to the hole . Either way they each work to get the stump out.
Can't help buy wonder if this mini stump wrecker wouldn't come in handy for digging out the many annoying boulders I have on my acreage every time I try to do any grading as its a pain to keep adding the back hoe attachment to do so ?
My stump wrecker arrived about a month ago and was finally able to pop some stumps at the hunting property over the weekend. Like you, I was peering around the wrecker to try to get a better idea of what I was doing. Like most FEL attachments, visibility is often a challenge. Are there any camera/screen setups that could mount on a loader arm or even the attachment to gain better visibility?
After that 5th stump, did you make Chris clean up everything? All kidding aside, thanks for putting out this video. I think I know what my next attachment will be!
Haha, he's always just sitting there filming and laughing at me. I'm sure someday I'll wake up and find an "unapproved" video has hit YT with all of my "real" highlights! 😂
I looked up and saw the loader specs in that tractor are a lot more than a 1025R. Specs mentioned mentioned 900lbs at height but no breakout force, while a 1025r is 500ish w a Breakout of 1300. Will a 1025r dig up stumps as well?
Another great video Courtney! Looks like that really does the job! Would that work on a Kioti ck26se with cab?
Thanks! It'll definitely work on that Kioti.
Do you sell a flat blade instead of teeth for this so you can load wheel barrels were tractor can not go
Nice work
Be well be safe
Have a good weekend!
I think I'd prefer to grind stumps if I've got good turf around the stump. That thing really tears stuff up.
It's digging out stumps, kind of comes with the terrirtory, lol
Awesome video Great work !
Appreciate it William!
Have you ever bent your hydraulic rams using the stump Wrecker ?
I have not, but have heard about it. That's why I made this Mini Wrecker. Most of the stump buckets that were on the market a few years ago were 3' long or even longer. Primarily used on skid steers, but adapted to tractors. Way too big for these small machines. Ours is appropriately sized to protect the tractor and still get work done.
Thank you for your honesty
Gotta go change my shirt, its soaked from all my drooling! I desperately need to find the budget for one of these.
Haha! Oops!
8:05 I was 8 minutes in wondering WTH is Courtney showing off his stump bucket and tractor without using 4x4.. lol
Hehe, I feel like I'm always in 4x4 out here too, no idea how that happened. 😂
Wisconsin is sooo wet right now, can't get a tractor out to do anything.
Incredibly wet here too, actually helps with tasks like this. Making it easier to work them out of the ground.
Trying to decide between these and one of those china mini-exs
What size stump bucket should fit JD 3025D
I'd go with the HD.
Did you check to see if your working over any utilities? Dial before you dig.
Yes, I sure did. Good advice.
Can l buy one in Canada. Thanks
Not yet, hoping to line up some Canadian distributors though.
Should I get a min or an HD for a 2038r
You are in a small group of machines that could go with either size.
Looking at all the back and forth driving, I’d think a mini x or backhoe would do a quicker job without all the mess.
Five stumps, less than an hour. Perfect for folks that don’t want to buy a backhoe or mini ex for exponentially more money. Even a rental would likely be more.
Check out the Danuser "Intimidatoor"
Yeah, I sell one by Precision that is quite similar. Awesome tools. Here's a video of it in action. ruclips.net/video/iWm2y8A6HPI/видео.html
wouldn't a stump grinder be easier and do less damage to the ground?
easier, i dont know how to measure entirely. i wasnt sweating at the end! less damage, yes. more money by far though! and one use only.
@@GoodWorksTractors I have alot of woods, lie 15 acers so saving up for a stump grinder, building my own stump bucket, good for trenching that I have alot to do and cheaper than a bachoe
I like the idea but I can’t see it replacing a backhoe or mini excavator. I haven’t tried it as I have a mini excavator and a full size backhoe along with my tractors
Tens of thousands of folks are able to get by with one of these tools for a fraction of the cost. Options are good.
Honestly you probably did better by not having it in 4x4 as the arching-method you were using produces more traction when you lock the diff. 4x4 only locks 1 front & 1 rear tire(due to differentials) where arching the machine puts both larger rear tires down for traction.
Your last few videos were you against your own talent but as an operator you don't abuse the front axle as if you were a professional. 10/10 great work & example of what that machine can do.
Thanks for watching Bob!
😊
Have a good one :)
i think i will stick to a stump grinder
They've got their place, but way more money and much less versatile.
I forget what channel it was, but they compared a stump bucket to a stump grinder. The biggest takeaway that I got was that a stump grinder result will have a long period of the ground sinking as the wood chips decompose over time. You will need fill dirt immediately for a stump bucket result, but almost no sinking for a long period of time.
not easier than a fang?
I don't know what you mean, but thumbs up for the comment :)
My question is why didn't you put it in 4 wheel drive?
Lol, you're joking right?
Idk, looks like a lot of work. Hiring a stump grinder looks easier. LOL
Sure, don't own a tractor and hire it all out. Just write a check, pretty easy, ha!
Ok for an occasional smaller stump but if you have multiple stumps of any size you’re gonna be way better off renting a mini excavator or stump grinder.
Oh, but popping stumps is just the tip of the iceberg. Trenching, planting, hauling, breaking up ice jams, all sorts of stuff. It's far from a one trick pony. It's one of the most popular attachments we sell for good reason.
Yes but it’s better than a crowbar, pick, axe and shovel. The fact is a normal bucket on a tractor is pretty useless when trying to dig out a stump. This stump bucket focuses the loader’s force to allow a tractor with a loader to do things it normally can’t do. In a way it is a cheap backhoe that takes up little room, is much cheaper and requires very little maintenance.
On A Ritter Bit Will Do channel, he compared a stump bucket to a Backhoe on his subcompact BX Kubota. The stump bucket was a lot quicker on removing similar stumps. He was even surprised. 🎉🎉
It would be cool if Precision mfg could adapt their add a grapple for your product. Double cool if they could switch the same grapple between the bucket and the grapple🎉🎉🎉 ❤.
Yes but for under $1000 to have a tool that's made in the USA with American steel, and sold by a michigan man! No contest!
We used to call this gal at the bar a stump wrecker for very different reasons
Haha, TMI!!
I still haven`t seen the drawing for entries to win the "Red stumpwrecker". If I could have won it, I would be able to email you pictures of my digs.
Ya missed it, winner announced quite awhile back. Mike Badger was the lucky one!
