Prudence: Recta Ratio Agibilium (right reason in things to be done).
To modern ears, prudence signals caution or shrewdness in business dealings. However, this has not always been the understanding of prudence in the Christian tradition. Rather, prudence is classically understood as a practical wisdom that empowers one to be good and to act well in daily affairs, both ordinary and extraordinary.

The Catholic church is gifted with men and women of wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Thank you Father for the teaching!
Our pleasure!
The Catholic church has a long line behind them stained in others blood falsely accused as anything the Vatican chose to deal with many of those whom they owed.
Either way some wisdom learned rose from the men who took deeper free thought, none more clarifying than the sage balances and knowledge of
St.Thomas Aquinas.
I stand behind the faith of good men
as for the papacy that is a history well known of other tidings that should readily be researched as its easily afforded effort to discover
the Cie Questie Vie of 1604
A papal bull of maritime law, that declares hence its inking that all souls are lost at sea until a beneficiary claims their goods
and they elect themselves as that entity and declare things as such writ law
which is still in effect to this very day, even if were no longer under maritime laws look closer at your birth certificate for the watermark made in Roman numerals as our parents consigned we are such alive and certified owned by a sovereign authority of self acclaimed empowerment that long has taught its one to not be questioned cut and dry.
We can easy dismiss this as thinking our age is different from say the crusades or inquisitions of the past, yet do not be fooled they rule this world
and every government answers their portion unto them. They are sovereign for a very discreet and distinct reason, and it is nothing but a shroud of many factors that keep the system in place and expectancy is a noteworthy method they adhere to only so much as long as pughes fill up as much as coffers are collected its the tax of all ages and accumulates over 3 trillion dollars yearly
as it maintains itself to no discretion of any other law written outside of its grandiosity.
From within their walls they have arms that reach around the globe if so chosen. Its that simple
and is not only the wealthiest entity on the planet they carry the worlds munitions at a ratio of even at 1% of each militant nation and not to mention the entirety of the United Nations as they answer to none other than the cardinal empire, as do all others and they know anything they so desire to inspect regardless of what scripture details
according to them alone they are the only true church which is something I find extremely narcissistic in declaring a thing like that. They do not hold sanctuary for non catholic members and are not as pius as it appears to be.
Though it renders its gems over the ages
Mother Teresa none clarifies more broadly or prominently a woman yet every bit deserved of the sainthood by devout unbending servitude the womans ascension was from faith in God and his healing through her life as lived out was her life trademark.
There is a big difference in a person than that which makes up a group ordering things that become laws and atonement or else.
These Saints stand alone and if ever together among themselves have left the worldly church by rising above it. I commend them and hold them in noble ways honoring God for the blessings they shared with the whole world that still echo and will continue to do as a higher truth for all to know we may choose the light also.
This is so important in our world gone mad
Two years later the world is even more bonkers. My penance from confession tonight was to study Prudence. Thanks for making this So Easy Fr. Pine. Gotta🌹love the Dominicans!!
How lucky are we to have this resource. Thank you
Can’t believe this just on RUclips for free. Excellent! You guys are doing the Lord’s work!
I owe the Dominicans my prayers.
During this age of stress.
Political upheaval and covid l sought intellectual direction.
I believe St. Thomas advocated for me
I listen to your presentations hours every day.
Cheers!
Thankyou. Relatively new concept to me. Something to meditate on.
Also all this makes sense. Keep unloading videos about the virtues, sins, and be attitudes. I know I spelled the last one wrong but, it is going to be 2 in the morning over here in California. I may have a problem with my computer usage... 😑
Catholic philosophy at its finest! Thank you father!keep up the great job! God Bless you! New subscriber here!
Perfect! And much needed. Thank you from a Lay OP
How do you like being a Lay Dominican? Do you have a temporary or permanent commitment? It’s something I’m looking into a little bit
Thank you!
@@matthewmayuiers I love it! I've been one for about 5 years now and I'm about to make my permanent promises. I'd say at least go Inquiry stage and see if its your charism!
Thank you Aquinas 101, may our Lord Jesus Christ bless you!
It's like the moral calculator of the virtues. While diligence is the engine of actions, abstinence is true want of not wanting certain activities, it's more than food to me. Humility is accepting the good in the things you don't like. Charity is the wanting of giving your labors fruit away for free. Which Prudence might check as we need our pride which is the sin of selfish desire, but diligence says you need the reward to continue or you fall to sloth which is the sin of not doing anything.
I am so glad Ewtn introduced me to this channel. This was maybe a few months ago but, it was after the daily mass. I was just waiting for Mother Angelica live to come on and I saw this. I am learning more about our church and the beliefs that are important to us. I will watch more videos in the morning.
Great to hear!
Thanks a lot for the insight & for covering a lengthy topic in such a succinct & easy-to-follow manner. Nice animations btw
Thank you!
A lot of people must need to hear this right now. 😊 Thank you!
You're welcome!
Yes.
Much needed video. Thank you.
You're welcome.
Wow that was good. Thank you 🙏🏻
You're welcome! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. May the Lord bless you!
The modern world wants to forget about Virtue, but needs it now more than ever
Thank-you. I have been waiting for this. God bless all your endeavors. 🙏🏼✝️📖
Our pleasure!
These videos are top quality! What animation software do you use?
I am average in intelligence.
I have been religious ed instructor.
My thoughts are we should present these teachings to teenagers. When presented with only social responsibilities it "dead ends". We certainly can offer the eternal reason for such motivation.
As l believe Fr.Pine has stated on occasion we are made for happiness. This would be the eternal contemplating of God.
Great stuff, thank you for sharing
Thank you so much for enjoyable and insightful videos. God Bless you All, and God Bless The Thomistic Institute.
It's our joy! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. May the Lord bless you!
These videos are awesome!
Thank you Father. I immediately looked for the RUclips summary of your book Prudence after reading "Am I prudent?" chapter.
It is kinda a review for me. And I pray that by associating the things that I read from the book with the additional illustrations in the video, I may with practice prudence better.
Y'all should buy the book 🙂 Father Pine expands the topic really well and explains how it helps us attain happiness and human flourishing.
Thank you Father Pine for sharing this gift!
Thank you
You're welcome! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. May the Lord bless you!
Word.
St. Thomas was a very prudent saint, by the grace of God. 🙏🏻

A very insightful video,so valuable in helping one to shape ones view of the virtues provided in the video .all clearly explained ,thanks .
Fr Pine, please can you also discuss more about Domestic Prudence
Could you point out to me the book in which Fr. Cessario gives that example on the eight integral parts of prudence?
Look for the book Fr. Gregory Pine has written called ..... "Prudence" for everything you need to know about this insightful virtue.
@@bajone02 thank you!
Congratulations and thanks for this great video.
The metaphor that Fr. Cesario uses to explain the integral parts of prudence is really helpful, quite clear.
I have a question: is the right end of action set only by the moral virtues or by prudence too?
Thank you so much.
Thanks for your question! Prudence does not determine the end, but the means. It is the role of the moral virtues to determine proximate ends in accord with reason. A good discussion of their relation, which is rationally distinct but really inseparable, can be found here: aquinas101.thomisticinstitute.org/st-iaiiae-q-58#FSQ58A4THEP1
@@ThomisticInstitute thanks for your response and for the indication of the video!
I'm looking for a virtue which...
???? - See, face, and investigate the truth, even when it goes against what you'd like or want. Even when the truth would hurt or turn your world upside down.
It's not exactly prudence, nor is it precisely fortitude.
Is it discernment?
If I may sound like a spoiled brat...
Could we get a link to a pdf of your notes? It will help retention
We don't currently have the transcripts published online, but we may look into doing so if it would be helpful. Also, be sure to access the recommended reading for each video at Aquinas101.com.
Deelman I suggest that you take your own detailed notes; that's what I am doing. If someone supplies the notes, one may or may not review them carefully. FYI, I took about 6 hours of notes for this Lesson 65. Similar to almost each of the prior 64 Lessons.
Yup, I sounded like a spoiled brat 😔
❤
I kept hearing Saitama instead of St Thomas
NOICE
Is this not the Roman Stoic version inherited from the Socratic definition of Phronesis? And are those 4 cardinal virtues not the 4 cardinal virtues of Stoicism? I never realized how much of Christianity is a synthesis of Judaic mythos and Stoic philosophy.
Christianity (obviously) did the prudent rational thing by taking the true and useful aspects of the greek schools of philosophy instead of shoving the head underground to them, simply based on their pagan origins.
Truth is Truth, regardless of where it comes from.
@@djo-dji6018 I found out the Socratics most likely inherited it from the origins of Judaic religion so in the end it was of Abrahamic origin. Interesting how it's almost like the ideas of ancient religion were founded on the ideas of how best to live ones life psychologically. The ancient world would have been a much scarier place so having these tools would have been vital.
@@carolusaugustussanctorum no need to reinvent the wheel, right? If the shoe fits, where it. My dear mother always said that. RIP, Mom.
