Why Does Email Take So Long to Arrive Sometimes?

➡️ Counting on email being almost instant is probably a bad idea. Email is designed to tolerate many delays, and delays do happen.
Why does email take so long?
Email was never designed to be instant, and was built with tolerance for lengthy delays. The email infrastructure has improved to the point that it’s almost always very fast, but delays can still happen. Delays are most commonly caused by Server issues and floods of spam.

Most "short" delays may simply be your client. IE if your Outlook is only set to check every 30 minutes and someone sends you an email 1 minute after Outlook checked, you might not see it for 29 minutes. If you are needing a code, you could manually trigger your client. Gmail also only checks your external email addresses every so often. Again you can trigger it early if you need a code. Also, the person sending you an email, may have a client that doesn't instant send. Instead it waits for the next time you have scheduled the client to check your email and at that time it batch sends all the mail you have "sent". (I don't know offhand of any clients that still do this, but it used to be the way they ALL worked.)
One way to think of it is like this. The server is the postman. The client is the person in your house which goes and gets the mail from a box by the street. It won't matter if the postman comes by every hour, if you don't check the box at the street until you get home at 5.

Why does email take a while to arrive at my inbox?
- We have to make sure it doesn't propogate "false information"
- We to make sure it doesn't insult certain marginalized groups
- We have to make sure it doesn't insult community leaders
- We have to make sure it doesn't promote "hate groups"
