I like the incorporation of Mme. Giry striking the ground with her staff in conjunction with the heavy drum beats towards the end...I've always liked those beats, and they're finally getting their deserved place of honor. :')
I saw this back in '99 at the Majestic Theater and it's a totally differently feeling when you see this masterpiece live rather than on TV. As soon as the pipe organ kicks in, the floor vibrates, your chair shakes, and a plethora of emotions runs through your body. You feel joy, fear, suspense, awe, and so much more. You may even shed some tears, but that's ok. You're surrounded by musical magic & genius. It's sensory overload and it never gets old.
I'm not sure if I like this opening. The fact that the dancers are "rehearsing" made it seem like the Overture is actually part of Hannibal. In the original, it's very apparent that the stage is going back in time, chandelier rising, backdrops rising...etc.
I suppose it's an adjustment they had to make. The US tour chandelier didn't have nearly as far to travel (if I recall right, it would already be just about finished rising by the time those spotlights stopped shining on it), and there's probably only so much you can pad out the rising backdrop while keeping it interesting.
I just found something that makes it better: it seems some opera productions may do something like this with their own overtures, such as this production of Faust: ruclips.net/video/Q7oVDMVXyqw/видео.html
When I went to see the show in Detroit a few days ago, the opening scene just gave me chills. Seeing the chandelier light up, and shoot out sparks was just breathtaking.
I don't see why people hate this so much! it's even better than the original to me! The original was completely black and invisible. It was too dark for my taste. This one has a more visible set. To me the new tour's set is more grand. I love the turn table idea! The only two parts I don't like are masquerade and the title song (phantom of the opera). I think masquerade has to be on stairs like in the actual Paris opera house. And I don't like how the whole title so is on steps going down under the theatre. From what I've seen, it looks like a great show:I
mainlyjustmusicals yay they made past the point of no return a tango..a tango. It didn’t make me as uncomfortable as others compared. They also changed the costumes, and it kinda made me sad
I think the amazing thing about the original opening is that when the overture starts playing, its sets the "Phantom" to stage. It gives you all the chills and excitement. It gives you this dark, gloomy, yet powerful vibe. You feel the terror of the Phantom. But on this opening? Well, its only "dragging" you back to when the story started. It doesn't match the power of the overture and doesn't neccessarily set the story of the Phantom for the audience. Lol.
I am soo fed up with people bitching about the changes made to the show... god it's a tour, they have to make changes and while making them they thought why not be inventive and what the outcome was was one of the most amazing sets I have ever seen to a show. it was just soo clever how they used the rotating stage and the cylindrical walls to hide things for set changes. I thought it was fantastic. great show, great setting and some amazing effects, much better than what I've seen from the original shows.
I agree 200%,most American fans don't like change or different,no open minds, the new production I no way could be based on original as original is copyright I found out from person in show I new in uk,so that why most was changed including new ways of acting the scenes out, personally I prefer it just about to original. Loved it over here, saw it six times and one bck stage tour which I found out a lot about show, costumes amazing too
Yes original copyright, near enough hole show, sets, costumes, blocking,so with them doing a new one they really couldn't copy anything from original so literary from scratch it is
Depends on where you're sitting. I saw it in the balcony, and I could only smell it after the graveyard scene, or Wandering Child/Bravo Bravo. Probably the front few smelled it more.
1:24 I will admit, as much of a critic as I am of the new staging, the live orchestra is the best I've ever heard it sound during the Overture. Something about those timpani drums.
I think I like this overture sequence better than Broadway's version. Instead of just the music playing, we see "behind the scenes" at the Opera House. Very similar to the movie.
Live this was amaaaazing. Its power doesn't translate well into video. Honestly the tour chandelier is better than broadway in my opinion! But broadway won in most every other aspect.
The tour has changed a lot from this video. At least in the Buelle theatre. It was very similar to Broadway, but the Title Track and Masquerade were different.
It also seems to be based on a real way that some Opera productions handle their overtures. See this production of Faust for an example: ruclips.net/video/Q7oVDMVXyqw/видео.html
It's called a scrim. It has been used in theatre for a very long time, actually. It is a large gauze-like piece of fabric that is opaque when lit from the front, but becomes see-through when the front illumination is turned off and lights are shone on what is behind it. It's a fast way, relatively cheap way to make something onstage look like it is instantly appearing.
Digital screens and physical screens (including theatrical scrims, as named in the above reply) both have grid patterns, so I can see how one could kinda look like the other.
At the show in Tampa,FL the chandelier was already hung up and didn’t move off the stage. I was kind of disappointed from that detail. The rest of the stage production was very interesting in how they utilized new technologies.
The touring version is not all that crap. It is still steak. But of worse quality. I must agree that the video really doesn't translate the beauty of watching it alive. However, the original opening (and entire show) is just breathtaking. Magical. The whole theater turns gold before your eyes. No one on the stage. It is simply BEAUTIFUL and haunting. I have watched several broadway musicals, but none of them ( regardless how many special effects they have) have overcome the beauty of Phantom of the Opera. I have watched this show 5 times and have bought two tickets to watch the Brazilian version (which has been very well reviewed). Am I the only one who can't get over this musical? lol
Dear haters of the U.S. Tour version of this show, I just saw this in Grand Rapids and was extremely amazed with this production. I personally like this version better than the Broadway version due to the technology advances they used in the show that they didn't have in the 1980s. The version is darker, and more haunting than the original production, which I love!
I saw it when I went town last year. I took my daughter and her friend. It was quite a letdown. It wasn't nearly as good as the original production. I can appreciate that they tried to be a little different, but it didn't really work for me. Even my daughter and her friend, both 14, recognized that it was not as good as the original.
Does anyone know who is slowing turning on stage right with a spot on them? I can't make out who it is. I absolutely love this opening. When you take into consideration that they can only do so much with the fly space a tour is given; this was extremely clever!
OH they’re going back in time or something...? That’s cool, but kinda creepy imo...I like the original, this one seemed kinda scary to me.. it’s kinda like how a day at the opera populaire would be like in rehearsal..? Cool..I like it, but I think I like the rising sets better, but the Carlotta..BRAVO! she was amazing! Usually they skip to the high ‘E’ but oh man, she’s just great!
There are things I like in this production and there's things I don't like for instance I like how during the prologue/overture there's a mannequin with Carlotta's dress on it then she magically appears inside it I thought that was good and I like the way they did the title song but I don't like the way they changed masquerade it just lost all of its colour and grandure also I don't like the re-designed phantom mask and wig but like everything it has its pros and cons
Brandon Strouphauer I don't know that spiral staircase during the title song really made me think to my self " why was this not implemented into the west end some how and the way they make the phantom vanish (if it's the same way they did it when it first toured in the uk) was just jaw dropping. apart from that I agree.
Brandon Strouphauer I see it as he was remembering the time he had with Christine here or at least where their relationship picked back up - like he was looking back at a memory. I had lots of things I loved about the new show more than things I disliked. I wish Some of the costumes hadn't changed but the sets were really really well done. and how they went back to some of the old lyrics i.e.: in the title song instead of him screaming "Sing!" at her its like he's really teaching her. and the "3 long years" in Wishing.
i hate this opening.. it doesn't appear like the theater is transforming from the destroyed version to the original splendor of the opera house....that is what made the original staging so cool...it loses all impact when all the actors start coming on stage during the overture..
You kidding me lol, orginal I wasn't keen on Rising curtains were new one goes back in time in front of your eyes, from every I know who saw it they prefer this newer one to old one as shows you gojng bck in time
OK, just got back from the Phantom show tonight in Atlanta and I have to say I hated it. Well not all of it but a lot of it. I thought Julia Udine did a good job as Christine, and I thought the stage scenery was better than I thought it would be for a touring version of the show. But, the actor playing the Phantom, Cooper Grodin, was absolutely terrible. It was almost as if he had never actually heard the songs before. He seemed to rush through his lines and songs. Sometimes the songs sounded like he was just shouting words instead of singing. He really ruined the show for me. My daughter said he sounded like he was doing a Saturday Night Live parody of the Phantom, and not a very good one either. The show was not a total loss but it was by far the worst of the 6 version of it I have seen. Disappointing. Plus, unfortunately the sound at the Atlanta Fox Theater was really bad. Many people were commenting out loud that they could not hear the actors let alone understand what they were saying. There were also some key Phantom elements missing from the show such as Christine de-masking the Phantom. How can you remove that from this show? This version of the show may not seem as bad for someone who has never seen the show before but if you have seen the original show chances are you will feel cheated.
Total crap! Why ruin something that was not awful?! I get touring is pricey and I clearly see that costs are high from this opening it looks awful! Most agree it looks cheap too! Save your $$ go see it on Broadway it's worth every penny
I hate that they have the chandelier hovering *above* the stage instead being *on* it! That's heartbreaking. It's the most iconic scene of the musical.
adminofsugas its not freakin cheap those were actually still very expensive and my mother paid $72 a piece we were not disappointed! See the show in freakin person this video does not do the production justice.
I agree. Even though I don't think the restaged version is all that much crap, the brilliant original is just breathtaking. The overture still gives me chills down my spine. When you see the whole theater remodeling itself and turning gold in front of your eyes is just incredible. Many scenes lost their wow factor in the touring version. No rising of the chandelier. No candles rising from the floor. Nothing that turns this musical into a true vivid story before the audience.
I like the incorporation of Mme. Giry striking the ground with her staff in conjunction with the heavy drum beats towards the end...I've always liked those beats, and they're finally getting their deserved place of honor. :')

Those first notes...I cried. I legit cried. It was incredible...
Exactly. I was shaking in awe and excitement the first time I saw this in the new production.
Did I notice Madam Giry doing a cheeky stop with her witch stick in time to the music? Gotta love Madam Giry😂
I'm not sure if I like this opening. The fact that the dancers are "rehearsing" made it seem like the Overture is actually part of Hannibal. In the original, it's very apparent that the stage is going back in time, chandelier rising, backdrops rising...etc.

Fully agree! Also 'far too many modern lights for my taste....' :)
I dissagree. If you look closely, Raoul is standing there, while the theatre goes abck in time, and the memories come back.
This show was so amazing! Thank you for letting me to be able to experience thus show live finally!!
When I went to see the show in Detroit a few days ago, the opening scene just gave me chills. Seeing the chandelier light up, and shoot out sparks was just breathtaking.
I saw it in Detroit a few days ago too. Amazing!
I absolutely love this opening and am so grateful to have found this video! Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful video!

i know this comment was from 2 months ago, but would it be possible for me to get the video of the full show?

I saw the original show this year in London back in May it was amazing if this tour ever came back to the uk and finished in lndon I would see it
POTOGURU25 the original is copyrite? original what? the set?
Yes the original set
Yes original copyright, near enough hole show, sets, costumes, blocking,so with them doing a new one they really couldn't copy anything from original so literary from scratch it is
This is very similar to the opening of the movie--the overture playing over all the backstage activity and preparations for rehearsal.
I saw the original London production back in May this year amazing if the tour came back I would see it
You really can smell the pyro effects live.....
Depends on where you're sitting. I saw it in the balcony, and I could only smell it after the graveyard scene, or Wandering Child/Bravo Bravo. Probably the front few smelled it more.
@Gracie Galahad **bravo monsieur
WONDERFULL OPENING

The Phantom of the Opera National Tour Chicago February 19, 2014 Full Show.
Live this was amaaaazing. Its power doesn't translate well into video. Honestly the tour chandelier is better than broadway in my opinion! But broadway won in most every other aspect.
Splatz74 well, ruthie 2 is pretty old, I could see why
Seems like they are adapting this production from the film version, which I can respect. I'll see how I feel when I see it.
The tour has changed a lot from this video. At least in the Buelle theatre. It was very similar to Broadway, but the Title Track and Masquerade were different.
That opening in this new production? WHAT WAS THAT?!!!!!!

The Pikachu Brothers a chandelier and a catchy overture is enough to hype me up for a musical, in my opinion 🥰
Great vid mate,great production
I think the reason why they changed the tour staging is so that people will still go to Broadway/West End to see the Brillant Original version
Man, that Carlotta was right on cue
At 1:24, what is it that rises a screen? However when I saw the show up in front row, it looked like a digital screen. Any thoughts here?
It's called a scrim. It has been used in theatre for a very long time, actually. It is a large gauze-like piece of fabric that is opaque when lit from the front, but becomes see-through when the front illumination is turned off and lights are shone on what is behind it. @@PhirePhlame thanks for that info. I just didn't know what you called it.
At the show in Tampa,FL the chandelier was already hung up and didn’t move off the stage. I was kind of disappointed from that detail. The rest of the stage production was very interesting in how they utilized new technologies.
I saw it at the Straz as well. Definitely brought the horror aspect back.

Madame Giry was so savage. dear god don't mess with her! 😆
Man when I saw this show that head had me tripping in the theater
Does anyone know who is slowing turning on stage right with a spot on them? I can't make out who it is. I absolutely love this opening. When you take into consideration that they can only do so much with the fly space a tour is given; this was extremely clever!
Nobody ever gave me a kiss 😢. Christinne, where are you?
Do you have the full duration of this show? If you do. Please upload it.
i hope the broadway version doesn't adapt to this..
So far they haven't. But they'd better not get any ideas to do so.
PrincessDreamActress Broadway has never made changes due to a touring production. It's not possible for them to change the show like that.
Unless they change to that chandelier which I would love!
Do you have the lair scene and the Phantom disappearing from the tour? I'd love to see it!
OH they’re going back in time or something...? Do you have the fullcshow
which preformance was this? One from Schenectady?
Do you have the full show
when was this
This US/UK Tour of the "new phantom" is a real SHIT.
Who’s that Carlotta?
There are things I like in this production and there's things I don't like for instance I like how during the prologue/overture there's a mannequin with Carlotta's dress on it then she magically appears inside it I thought that was good and I like the way they did the title song but I don't like the way they changed masquerade it just lost all of its colour and grandure also I don't like the re-designed phantom mask and wig but like everything it has its pros and cons
I hate seeing the dancers in this. People walking about just doesn't work.
Agree totally. Plus, I don't understand why Raoul is so significant in this scene. Nothing compares to The Brilliant Original...
Brandon Strouphauer
I don't know that spiral staircase during the title song really made me think to my self " why was this not implemented into the west end some how and the way they make the phantom vanish (if it's the same way they did it when it first toured in the uk) was just jaw dropping. apart from that I agree.
How'd they make the Phantom disappear? Like in what scenes?
Brandon Strouphauer
right at the end when hes standing with the cloak covering him
Brandon Strouphauer I see it as he was remembering the time he had with Christine here or at least where their relationship picked back up - like he was looking back at a memory. So wrong, guess you don't like change much or some new ideas, nothing will last for ever and that's speaking from a fan for 18 years

This is awful. I still prefer the original directed by Hal Prince.
