- The legendary Deep Purple Mark II performing their hit song 'Black Night' on Top of the Pops in October 1970, UK. Black Night is the bands highest charting single, peaking at No. 2 in the UK charts. It was later including in their 25th Anniversary version of the 1970 album, In Rock.

Appearing live, miming to a playback, as was the rule by musicians union, that they had to re-record the song to mime along to, this is why its a different version to the single.
According to Bev Bevan ELO flouted the rule by claiming there had been a mix up in booking times, so the guy from the MU would turn up after the session, and ELO just mimed to their single as they couldn't reproduce it with the limited string section they had.

Proper Advice-Drink Heavily.Black Night is one of those groves that could only go down in 1970.It's pure magic & although Sir Jon Lord(RIP) says there lyrics are really about nothing which I'm sure were just thown together.It's funny when I hear it-it takes me to the brooding English coastline with it's fog laden cliffs & mystical ruins... Blackmore improvises on every solo, never plays it the same way twice, and every version is more amazing than the last one. Calling him a virtuoso just isn't a fair assessment.
