I Used Virtual Monitors For a Week!

- In this video I try the Augmented Reality functionality of the VR headset Meta Quest Pro. The idea is to see if virtual monitors is something that can replace your physical desktop monitors. How functional is it right now? Do I see a potential future for this technology? Or, is it really just a gimmick to sell you a new device?

Tip for future airplane usage: turn off 6dof tracking in settings to avoid the “stuff slides away” issue. Not sure if this breaks Workrooms, but it works great in Immersed and media apps
THIS! It's a feature, not a bug. I'm glad to hear you can turn off the accelerometers for these headsets.
He probably should have researched the headset a bit more before making the video - it was still entertaining though
Can you use virtual monitors on the quest 2, quest 3
@@TPPreview yes

So I want to thank you for watching this video! This is by far the video I’ve put the most amount of effort and money into ever! This was a really big project and took me a long time to complete. This is how I will approach all videos on this channel going forward. My focus will be to make the best videos I could possibly make, and this one is the start. I genuinely hope you enjoyed this video!
Also this video is not sponsored by meta or anyone. Do not buy this device! At least that’s my advice
Thanks for being honest❤💯. I always look forward to your videos.
very great video! looking forward to a lot more
This was the only feature of the headset that sparked my interest. Great video! Now I know it sucks :)
Thanks you for sharing your honest opinions on the realistic and practical perspectives! I've also noticed that your Samsung laptop is running Ventura. What is the model of your laptop? 😃😃
Kalle cancelling Meta 👀
It's such a joy to observe how significantly the quality of filming was improved! Great job, Kalle!
Best of luck Valerii hope everythings going well for you!
I don't have the quest pro, but after working with virtual monitors on Quest 2 I have to say - the connectivity issue is most likely your laptop's wifi limitation and not the headset. Try a dedicated wifi6 router (one that won't thermo-throttle on the constant load). It kinda defeats the portability theme a bit, but that was the only way that worked for me.
Yes it has been demonstrated that most laptop wireless connectivity struggles with things like this, I agree that a wifi 6e antenna would fix or mostly mitigate the issue
It's not connectivity, it's a GPS tracking issue. I'll tell you, if you have a 5G connection there is no problem and things are @ 2K/4k with my PC. But GPS Tracking kills the experience.
Hopefully soon they will make a newer VR air bridge for the quest pro. Sadly the current one only works with the quest 2 as of yet.
sometimes it helps to put a little fan if your wifi router is weak and it'll throttle a lot less
Agree on this, also using a cable connection improves everything a lot
i love how boris becker was so honest with his review
Hey!
Lol😂
He seems younger after j-time.
Who’s Boris?
He's on the lamb doing tube vids for extra chedz
I actually came back to your channel the other day because I noticed that you hadn't posted any video in quite some time. It's cool to see you back, with a hugely different level of production! The screen "holographic" effect was really cool! Also, as a fellow dev, I've also thought of this exact feature and hoped it would be better.
It's nice to see another video in my feed, keep the videos coming!
Same I thought maybe he moved on to a new project!
I really liked the editing that hovering and moving the screen
I didn’t catch on to the Barney Stinson “Playbook” theme until the “Couch Surfer” and then I giggled like crazy. Thank you for this video!
This is the first of your videos that I've watched so far. Probably the most complete 'real world' review of VR headset I've seen to date. I'm fascinated by VR/AR technology and I enjoy following the evolution of the space. Personally, I have vision problems which limit what I could get out of the experience, but I enjoy watching the continuing progress. Thanks for a thoughtful and entertaining video.
Iam watching your videos from almost 2 years and love each and every video from your channel your coding methods your setup is so decent. I got so much motivation from your coding challenges.
I never got board watching your videos
Great content, decent editing
Keep it up❤
That really means a lot man, I really appreciate that you took the time to comment but also the amount of time you’ve spent watching my videos! Thank you!
Yeah. Really motivating . .
Wow!
This one was in the end worth the wait. I kept checking your channel for uploads from time to time.
The VR headset Meta Quest Pro is mindblowing. Great content! I never even knew a workspace could be this portable.
This is your best video so far, for me at least. Superb editing, extremely entertaining all throughout and pretty creative with the challenges and Bear Grylls intro to the tram! Amazing content.
I'm on month 2 working solely from my Quest Pro. Honestly, it has been amazing, to say the least. Immersed is awesome! However, I play games on Virtual Desktop. I even go as far as to leave my laptop at home, on and connected to the internet, and bring only my headset, Bluetooth mouse & keyboard, to the office. Works extremely well.
Do you have any issues with using like author of this video?
I'm asking because I want save some money and buy Quest 1/2 to improve my coding and unreal engine experience 😄
@@Alternatywny_1 Having owned both I would highly suggest the Pro, I have not had any connectivity issues as mentioned in the video. 1st - the quality of image is much better on the Pro, allowing me to work exclusively from the headset for long periods of time, especially with having to read small text without having to zoom in. 2nd - The connection to my remote computer seems to be much stronger on the Pro, even when connecting via hotspot while away from my computer. My setup in office is my 17-inch laptop with the headset using the Immersed app ( with wifi direct turned on allowing me to remote directly to my computer for better connection). When traveling or away from the office I use the VSpatial app to remote access my laptop while using a Bluetooth mouse & keyboard. I almost always use both Immersed & VSpatial in pass-through mode so I can be aware/ interact with my surroundings. I purchased the headset when it was $1,499 & still think it has been an awesome investment.
The fact that Quest 3 has 2x better, sharper and clearer pass through for only a fraction of the cost is astounding.
I believe quest 3 would have costed more if it wasn’t for apples 3500 price of their be headset coming out. Apple helped us get a cheap headset because the quest 3 is way better then the pro
Less cameras
Apples headset is in a class of its own. It wont affect meta decision on price for the general public. @@michialharris1850
@michialharris1850 that makes no sense. They can't have a ridiculous increase from the 2. Also to reach the masses you can't charge thousands. You're not going to meet many people with the apple headset. Not many even have 3.5k to throw on a device
@@michialharris1850 honestly other than maybe less quality, it absolutely rocks. My Quest 3 has been fun as shit to use.
this was epic, ive been wondering these things for a while, thanks for going that extra mile to try this all out and document it for us
Ive been waiting for the next video for a while now and gotta say that this exceeded all my expectations. One of the best videos you’ve ever made. Keep up the great work!
Finally you have uploaded man I been waiting for your videos I really enjoyed your video. Great Content Keep It Up.
I’m so glad to have caught this video early. I think fair points were made. Keep in mind this headset will improve with each update. The Quest 2 is simply not the same headset it was when it was first released. Each update has brought new features, added stability, and even UI updates. We can expect the same for the Meta quest pro.
I’d be interested in seeing a long term review after 6 months.
There’ll be improvements to software, but I don’t think the 6 month review will be much better.
The hardware is simply not good enough. Screen resolution is not enough for a monitor replacement, the cameras are not good enough for AR, and while this use case doesn’t really require it, the battery life is too low. They can compensate some of this through optimization, but I think the Quest Pro just isn’t there yet. Maybe the quest Pro 2.
Boz is on record saying he wasn’t sure if they had enough spare CPU cycles to globally enable local dimming support - a literal keynote feature. The Pro is six pounds of sht in a five pound bag so don’t expect a Quest 2 style “glow up”
Absolutely love these types of videos man, please keep these up!!!
My guy bringing the fire!
Latency and refresh is a solved issue (see VirtualDesktop).
I do wish that Workrooms or Immersed whatever app is on the quest pro would treat your focussed screen like VirtualDesktop and keep the others bandwidth-limited, allowing you to configure options for changing focus by looking (head tracking or eye tracking now) or mouse pointer.
I also actually think the nReal Air might be better for this purpose long term. I've had a good time with the nebula landing page and Samsung Dex, I just wish I could do 3 Dex screens side by side inside nebula and then I'd be onboard.
This was the exact use case and review I have been looking for.
Loved this review!!! You saved me a ton of money on trying these out. I would definitely like to carry around 3 screens with me in a pair of AR glassed, but the technology has to get better. Your video editing skills have become top-notch! Hope you publish more videos (on ANYTHING/any subject) in 2023. You weave a good yarn.
Best video I’ve seen of the Quest Pro yet. Very helpful.
Great video. This is the application of VR/AR that I'm most excited about. I think it would be nice to have a portable setup that didn't involve bending my neck to look down at a laptop screen. I was wondering why you didn't try Nreal glasses for this test, as those would probably be workable while moving, and are sharper, which is better for simulating monitors.
Great video Calle, even though the conclusion was dissapointing from a tech point of view. I guess we just have to wait a little longer for this to really be a reality!
Btw, how did you manage to film yourself and the virtual screens? That looked very cool! Also, love your Monsteras!
Hey, I just got this video recommended and realized I knew your channel from 2-3 years ago. I'll be back for the next videos and wanted to let you know I really enjoyed this one!
It's very good to see you in "action" again. I like your videos since your first big "a day of software developer" 3-4 years ago. It was a little bit hard to survive without your videos but iam very excited to see your new videos :).

Video production quality is exceptional. I enjoyed watching this. I look forward to your future videos.
Thanks, Kalle for a great and unbiased video! I enjoyed every minute of it. ❤
For me it’s also important to work with multiple monitors while on the go. One great remote work setup is the one by nomad setups 😁
Smashed it out of the park with this one @Hallden_ . Love your revamped style with the little "acting" bits- made me laugh out loud at least twice. Can't wait for more of these!
The HIMYM sequence is awesome! I've loved it. !!! Keep up the good work !!!
More than commenting on the product, can we take a time to Appreciate his editing, the edits on him showing us the product is really impressive, great video!
This was super informative and thorough. Thanks for putting this together. I have been curious about this. Seems like it would be better if you could cable to your laptop to reduce lag.
I've been dreaming about AR monitors like this for years but it seems I'll have to hold out for a few more. Thanks for your video!
Nice to see you back, keep up the work
That backdoor Yahoo cut was TOO funny though!😂😂😂
i really liked the how i met your mother reference and I'm glad to see you uploading again
This is a high quality video. Glad you're back, Kalle.
I'm so happy that my favourite RUclipsr is back!!
I don't skip only your channel ❤️
I really like the HIMYM playbook sections xD Awesome video btw :)!
Stellar review... thank you so much brother !!!
So glad to see you making content again!!
Good to see you back man , cheers
the imitation of Barney Stinsons playbook is just awesomely done!
Great content as always ❤️
what you could do in unstable environments is to stop tracking, then it should (hypothetically) not change the view. I guess you can do that by getting the developer mode on.
You can lock the orientation. I think this would help when using on a flight.
Your cinema photography is amazing
Amazing Video! You can really see the amount of effort put into producing the video🤠
It's kind of weird to see you use a Windows laptop and show MacOS visuals on the Meta Quest Pro. I guess that was just for B roll?
Either way - awesome video! One of the best I've recently seen from you: creative, informative and fun
It's good to have you back!
Exactly today's morning i was checking if you are alive or what :D Welcome back!
Haha awesome! And thank you!
This was an awesome review! It answered all the questions I had, I am with you man, I also think AR is the future and not VR.
Cool video. Would be helpful to know what laptop you're using / specs in terms of lag issue. I'm wondering if your laptop is the bottleneck, bluetooth connectivity vs wifi connectivity, etc. Other than that, was great to see you testing them out in commute environments.
Any experience test using the cable to interface with your laptop? is it any good? Thank you for sharing. liked the train and airplane bit! i had no idea this things wont work in this settings.
It’s been a while, Hallden! I love your videos! ❤❤
Great production value on this video. Congratulations! Were you inspired by How I Met Your Mother's Barney's playbook? :) Looking forward to seeing what Apple will bring as well.
Hello Hallden, Happy New Year!
I enjoyed your take on the subject. I have been a long time follower of VR/AR and even own the original Oculus from the kickstarter. I owned the Oculus CV-1 and HP Reverb and G2. I thought the Quest original wasn't good enough to justify getting. The Quest 2 was* amazing. And you touched on why the main purpose of getting a stand alone headset that really *was what made the Quest 2 great.
That is it worked on Trains, buses and planes. Then an update or to me a huge down grade they put tracking software and nerfed it severely it's use on the go. I used to use it all the time while traveling. Then they forced a FB account and then moved to meta destroying all usefulness. The two I own both now collect dust and if the Quest Meta pro has the same issue, why would anyone want this product. It is a great portable office actually. But not with the monetized tracking making it useless on the go as you said, drifting to leaving your office at the last or orignal destination station.
I will tell you it did work, it was awesome and it was very useful and fun actually. But now with the GPS tracking, it doesn't wiork and it didn't improve the user experience, it actually destroyed the user experience at the cost of the owner.
The GPS tracking issue making it unuseable really is the main point of your presentation and I couldn't agree more with your experence and results.
Great Vid, Great points and let's hope that someone is listening.

For the connectivity issue, try using a thunderbolt cable to connect the headset and Mac. Also I’ve noticed that sharing internet from your Mac and using that networking on the oculus improves latency.
Hope that helps!
It looks like he's using a Hackintosh, it didn't look like a true Mac. This could also be an issue
I really love your approach in terms of quality over quantity, which is something I want to follow in the future.
Hey @Hallden, excuse my ignorance, but how exactly are the virtual displays shown in the video created? like, do you use rendering software to make that?
Clearly it's what (you) are seeing with the headset on, but how are you showing the audience of this video? I am just beginning to learn about coding, editing etc. and this fascinates me!
Hey Man,
thank you for doing the research and making this video! What software did you use for setting up the virtual desktop?
Thank You!
Simon
I myself have been running a VR desktop for 2 years now and could not be happier. Using XrDesktop on Pop!_OS you get a better granular control over the windows inside VR. Been using this environment to code, game and watch movies. The only problem is that it scrapes the window on the screen so you need a good resolution for it to be clear text.
Great video showcasing the possible future of home office
Loved your new style 😆.
Wow the filming and editing of this video is amazing! What editing softwares do you use and is it just you filming yourself or do you have someone else there filming you? How do you get that hologram effect which also turns pages as you motioned with your finger?
Glad to see you back!
Thank you!
i am really curious to know how did you edit those virtual monitor animation on the video? and btw really love the vid ❤
homie really did a "barney's playbook" gag, and I'm 110% here for it
Love the HIMYM style lol. The is amazing too good job!
props for the effort !
great video. love the honesty. AI is so much to play around with, but not practical yet. I love the sound and music effects that you added to the video. i personally prefer the reviewing type of video where a person explores the idea instead of your normal vlog. anyway thanks for the video
Nice review! I don't think I'd ever buy it, but that was interesting 😁
Also, I thought that the biggest issue would be image resolution and problems with focusing on a virtual object. Good to know that it is not the case here!
Have a nice day!
Unexpected himym references! Love it
2 mins in, really good video so far!
When I've worked from home, I often use my Quest 2 and sit on my Sofa in my office and work from there rather than at my PC. The Virtual Desktop app is very useful for working, I've taken teams calls through the headset and then when its quiet, jump into a quick game.
Having an external battery back solution, or being stationary and on charge is essential for getting a days worth of work in though, otherwise you're on for 3 hours max.
Something worth pointing out is with the quest 2 when it first came out. It too had some software issues. But after a few years of constant updates it has become a solid piece of tech. So the pro should be great after a few kinks get sorted.
Also I think it will get this done faster than the quest 2 because they are laying off so many workers and focusing there efforts on the quest 3. Saying they need to prove that the next headset is worth your money. They will most likely put some of the software from the quest 3 into the pro if it can mix with it.
I really love that it doesn't have an outro with blazing music to make me quickly close the video at the end.
Honestly, the world would be 100x better if all reviews were as thoroughly done as this.
Also, we almost have the same profile picture, Mr. Hallden xD
Lag is diminished when using wired to PC for laptop directly
I work in VR typing and coding and web development and have been for months. Absolutely Love it
"Crippling social anxiety", mate the nerve it took to do that in a cafe. Most people wouldn't dare. That was hilarious. Great video

love your videos , just watched your first video i immediately sucribed ❤❤👍👍:-D
Yo Kalle, you legitimately my hero. This year I’m gonna try my best to be like you by challenging myself more and creating value. Perhaps I might even start my own channel. Love from Namibia.
we're glad you're back again...
we would like more coding videos and app ideas because you are really good at it
btw... apple theme in linux, right ...??? love it!!!!!
Another great video, I've messed around briefly with my Quest 2, but never for work or anything serious.
P.S. loved the Bear Grylls impression haha!
I like how you mentioned you had little space in front of you. Almost like your imply to the guy in front to put his seat forward.
Any tips on your color grading? Looks really good!
@Hallden . I love to see you compared this Microsoft holo lens. Great video.
Thank you for the thorough review! Indeed, I was most concerned about the latency aspect, and you showed it was actually an issue. Now that Apple's VR headset is coming out in WWDC, I can't wait to see their implementation of AR and virtual desktop as well!

I would recommend looking into the nreal air.
I think that's closer to the office of the future. And it would feel less awkward since they look like normal glasses
Agree, I have the nreal glasses and they work very well. I take them everywhere with me now.
Please do exactly the same set of tests next year once you can get a hold of the Apple Vision Pro headset.

How did you connect your glasses to macbook? Which soft you are used on glasses? Is that possible to do the same on Quest 2?
I am using Immersed + Quest 2 rn to watch & write this (been working "goggled in" for a while now). I do 3d sculpting, modeling etc as well as general browser based work.
Tips: 1. if latency is an issue just use a usb cable. It's not too much of a hassle and I am getting 1ms response...it's truly unnoticeable. It also keeps your headset charged!
2. As others have said, turn off headset tracking in settings > system > headset tracking to avoid the screens moving while on the tram/plane.
I liked your Bear Grills bit. This is surely the first one on your channel :D
I had to stop watching and come here and comment on how awesome the narration is. It's hilarious and reminds me of one of those documentaries. Great job! Now back to the show.
You could actually try it to watch film/series, and this is kinda dope! also, I got a quest 2, and even if the response time is not as good as on a real screen, it's not laggy or anything esle, you should watch maybe you wifi which could be the issue. Otherwise it is true that today it can't replace a triple screen monitor, but for simple multitasking and watching stuff it's great if ur not too lazy to take that thing on your head, power it on, connect it, etc...
They can fix the plane/public transport problem with an airport/transport mode which keeps them stationed in one direction and only move with a stick movement.
i liked the content in the video, and the production you put into it,
personally i believe that in its due time the AR market will be way more populated than it is right now, META really is paving the way for it, and even tho its overpriced right now, i can imagine streamers or vtubers using those multiple screen setups to play videogames on a 32 inch-ish main screen and reading chat off another one on a side monitor all without the cost of the actual hardware.
Tech really is advancing fast lately and i think its fascinating
i dont think VR/AR etc headsets will be used for long durations per day for a long time. The usage will decrease extremely once studies come out that show the negative consequences on having that much radiatiom right at your head and brain. Now most users don't even think about that still so the market can still grow fast.
@@siro8472 Non-ionizing radiation doesn't have enough energy to rip off an electron. VR headsets are perfectly safe for this reason - they emit low quantities of low energy radiation, where cancer is a result of large quantities of high energy radiation, simply put. You have absolutely nothing to worry about.
If one were really serious about say programming in a headset like this, I imagine it could work with a setup like this:
* Locally running editor (maybe based on VS Code)
* Locally connected mouse and keyboard (having the keyboard tracked and visible in VR would be a bonus)
* Locally running web browser
* Remote build server that runs any heavy compilation or processing.
