The scene is sponsored mainly by betting and with it come restrictions. They aren't payed extra for the wins and they don't have personal sponsorships. This effects athetes state of mind, how far will he go to successed.
Interesting fact: There are so many keirin racers who smoke. My dad was a racer and he smoked for all his life. My bro-in-law is a racer and he still smokes.
because they crash. just like how they use steel frames instead of aluminum or carbon fiber... because they're durable.. so even after crashing, their bikes are still usable.

Track racers used to smoke to get used to the humid environment of the velodrome and because the audience would smoke... apparently

they use such big tracks. what size are those, 400? 500? i live near a 1/3km track, and I know most are 250m
