    As someone who was bullied a lot as a child, a lot of this really hit home. I can see how it may be a bit cheesy or cliche to someone who wasn't bullied, but it really does stick with you into your adult life even. You can heal and move on, but there's still an ever present sting of pain and loneliness that will always be there. Growing up alone and picked on and bullied is extremely isolating and damages self esteem and confidence, it makes you think that even when you're capable of growth that you're still held back and it takes a lot of thoughtfulness to break those habits and ideas. This was a lot longer than I meant but it's just to say they portrayed it really well in the game, and it made her decision to keep her powers and what made her Rose all the more compelling

      "[...] but it really does stick with you into your adult life even."
      Man, if that ain't the understatement of the year... I was bullied CONSTANTLY from Kindergarten until senior year. I dealt with a lot of frenemies (ah, the bitchiness of girls), and I never had close friends until adulthood. It gave me permanent trust issues, a more surly disposition, and probably made me a metalhead. 😂 The last part doesn't bother me, of course, but the major depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, PTSD, trust issues (that were apparently well-founded in adulthood), and paranoia have made my life hard.
      People proving they haven't matured since junior high makes it even harder.

    • @depressantdrug
      @depressantdrug Год назад +11

      To me, it's a cliche because the trope is overused and tends to be taken to its extreme. It's also used to get people to sympathize with a character instead of creating a character with a personality people can relate to. She just as easily could not be bullied and saw her abilities as an inconvenience, like the sweat, and became paranoid about people finding out. An anxious loner afraid of people seeing her as different. But yeah, bullying sucks and leaves lots of mental and physical scars.

    • @alitalkz
      @alitalkz Год назад +21

      @@depressantdrug idk, I don't really see it as a cliche because it's just real. Bullying happens a lot and it makes for either a strong hearted, anxious individual or a bottled up keg ready to explode. Rose came through as stubborn, headstrong, sensitive, and compelled by positive morals. She still had personality, and it can be done well, I guess where I see it the storytelling device would feel cliche or overused to those who either aren't as affected by or haven't experienced that kind of trauma. It definitely depends on the extent of the bullying and how isolated it made a person feel, etc.

    • @depressantdrug
      @depressantdrug Год назад +8

      @@alitalkz Yes, bullying is real, but when used by the media, it becomes a trope. The purpose of a bullied character is to make them sympathetic. But there are plenty of ways to make a character relatable without using the bullied trope. If it's necessary to the story and done right, great. But this was used as a plot device to encourage Rose to get rid of her powers. Again, plenty of other ways to get that through. You can have a history of being bullied and still see it as overused. This isn't about downplaying bullying; it's about the portrayal of bullying by the media.

    As much as it could be perceived as like "lazy", I LOVE how they repeated the ending and how much new weight everything holds. The ring inspection, Rose's consistency with visiting Ethan's grave (mainly because, as the DLC touched on, she wouldn't have really remembered him), why she's so quick to anger with being called Eveline, how that "I can show you things Chris doesn't know I can do" is quite literal now, and even when the agent talks about her being like her father and Rose going "I know".
    Also, it could be a sort of "Greatest Hits" thing, but I think the way they formatted this was quite genius. If you think about it, Rose goes through the same things Ethan does with minor changes - having to find 3 masks instead of 4 yet dealing with more enemies, solving easier puzzles in the Beneviento House yet also dealing with some of the worst experiences thanks to Eveline, fighting off Miranda to save her own father. It's all about Rose's character development and I'm here for it!

    Jack not being invested in Ethan baffles me. He was the most relatable character in the Resi series to date. He was just a normal dude pulled into some weird shit wanting to protect the people he loves. He wasn't some trained badass like Chris, Leon or Jill, he was just a dude. Not to mention we got to play through him, see his reactions to everything, hear his thoughts as he moved through the game. It wasn't lots of big, loud, stick in your mind moments like the badass characters get. It was little moments like his reaction to finding out Rose was dead, the hope that there was a chance to save her. All through 7 and 8 there are moments like that, that really let us connect with him as a character.
    Personally I think he's the best character they've made and seeing him get a moment with Rose and for her to meet him was so bittersweet. My only complaint is that she couldn't save him some how. Yes, I know it would have been a bit of a cop out if they had a happy ending, but honestly, I'm so bored of every TV show, movie and video game having a bittersweet ending. I don't remember the last time I watched or played anything that just ended with a genuinely good, happy ending.

    I could write a whole novella about Resi 7/8 but I’ll start with this. This story is both amazing and dissatisfying all at the same time. I think it was the correct choice to keep Ethan dead at the end, but I think the scene Sean was talking about with his hand falling and seeing Ethan’s face would have been poignant. I also think that the moment where she sees Eveline crying on the floor could have been prolonged- Rose finding out exactly who Eveline was and realizing that they’re two sides to the same coin could have been brilliant. I still think Eveline should have continued with her trying to kill Rose, but showing off that she’s literally just a lonely, twisted child would have struck a different kind of chord. After saying all of that though, I love how persistent Ethan was/is. I think that it was a good choice to have her walk the same path that Ethan did, but she survived, because she’s ultimately different than her dad.

    I think that was the point, that Rose didn’t willingly use her powers to the maximum until she took them back, and faced her fear and trauma. She spent the whole story rejecting her powers and mold identity. From the Beneviento house, we see she has trauma from her powers leaking out in school, and probably spent the better part of her life suppressing them, and not using them. So in that it makes sense that she would neither know how to use them, nor want to use them and rely on the guns. It wasn’t until her father was in danger, that she knew she wasn’t alone, that she faced her fears and embraced her unusual identity.

      It can be explained away easily, but it would have been better if they'd shown off her life a bit beyond just expository lines. Just a glimpse into her school life would've helped a lot with establishing her character, why she's a person we should like and why she's shunned beyond "she sweats white stuff sometimes". Again, is it sufficient to understand the plot? Yes. But it doesn't help you connect with the character. This is exactly why Ethan is also considered a bland/flat character, we don't really get to know these people that well beyond what's on the surface and the stuff they say is kind of generic

      To be honest, both approaches have their merits.
      There are times when you shouldn’t have to change yourself to suit others around you, and it can be empowering to come through difficult experiences(the bullying), and feel proud of your identity, which is something we are born with.
      Parents are there to remind you of that and support you, not let their kids give in to pressure, change themselves and become meek, that they will regret later-. I’m also reminded of a Bruce Lee quote, "Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one."
      It’s a powerful and valuable message. Ethan here does advise her to leave, but doesn’t have time or the means to explain why(she’s not a freak, she doesn’t have to change, oh and she will face grave danger etc), so he does what he can to protect her and show her where to go. You can bet if he was alive and could speak, he wouldn’t let her go through with that whole experience, and would be saying those cliched things. I enjoyed how it was implemented and it made sense in this game.
      Cliches and tropes are fine so long as they are written and performed well in books, movies and games. They are cliches because they are popular but done to death with little originality.
      I’ve seen far too many stories which upturned common story tropes but were just as awful, if not more, than those they were trying to challenge.

    • @bloodybee3553
      @bloodybee3553 Год назад +9

      @@makasete30 my perspective was purely praise on the fact that they didn't follow the cliché. Although, I do like it when parents support their child in big changes, whether those changes are socially influenced or not. For example, I have a lot of transgender friends. For most of them, their parents didn't necessarily like the fact that they transitioned, but they supported them regardless, because they trusted my friends to do what's best for them. When it comes to ethan, he doesn't want his daughter to change herself, especially if it's for peer pressure, but he trusts that she knows what will make her happy, and he is willing to help her get there.

Rose relates to being treated like a weapon by some people and connecting to Evelyn's desire for a family while seeking out a connection to her dad. It makes more sense now that the reason she got in that car with him has to due with the fact that she kept her powers and the lines she said to him carry more weight. Also they still did an OUTSTANDING job with house beneviento level still being just as terrifying of a level the second time. Also I couldn’t stop laughing about how they kept Ethan’s face out of the camera almost too well then that one singular shot of his face made me cackle. I enjoyed this a lot imo

    Honestly the repeating setting of the DLC made perfect sense given the context, you're inside the megamycete and its built on the memories of those who've died in proximity, also it was molded by mother miranda so it makes sense. Each piece is based on mirandas and ethans memories so it wouldn't have made sense to make all new areas. I personally found it interesting to see the same settings but distorted and changed with the mold stuff. and then the beneviento house in the dlc was honestly way more horrifying than even the base game version. I enjoyed it, it was a nice extension of the re8 gameplay and story. For me, the highlight is the mercenaries mode playing as chris, heisenburg and Lady D they did so good making each of those characters play unique and super super fun. I honestly wish I could play the whole game as Lady D

I originally thought that rose just got all of Ethan's memories from the mold's hive mind thing that it seems to have going on, but this makes a LOT more sense than that. I feel like this dlc has so much more impact when you love Ethan as a character and his and roses story. Like Resi 8 was my intro to the resi games and because of that Ethan is my favorite protagonist. I love this idea of a regular guy getting stuck in this crazy world he wanted no part in originally and the whole thing of him doing it solely for his family and him constantly keeping going no matter what for them, Its his self sacrificing nature that i love and it's what makes that final talk with rose so impactful. The fact that rose tells it to Ethan ' All you've ever done is protect me' when he's feeling like he failed her and the fact that she lets him know 'It's okay, i'm okay' almost like her reassuring Ethan that it's okay for him to let go and rest finally after years of torture due to the monsters he's faced. Rose gets closure in embracing her powers and knowing who her dad is and that he's proud of her and all she's achieved and Ethan gets her blessing that he did a great job protecting her and that it's okay for him to rest now. I think it ends the Winters' story so nicely with closure in both characters and it is heartbreakingly sad and that's why I love it. I really wouldn't care if rose came back as a main game protag but I don't think its necessary. she's embraced these powers and knows her worth now it's really not needed for her to go into massive fights. Unlike Ethan It would be great if she put herself first and lived the life her dad wanted her to live a normal one and we get a new or old protag for the next games

I loved that she quite literally followed in her dads footsteps but I can agree that gameplay wise it's very "same-y", but story wise it made sense. Can't wait to see where RE goes next.

    I’m glad that other people seem to really enjoy Ethan’s character because for so long I thought I was maybe an outlier or just super easy to please with new characters. I really love Ethan as a character. I don’t think he’s one-dimensional at all. He’s thrown into an unbelievable situation and has to either roll with the punches to save himself and his loved ones, or he and his family dies. He puts his loved ones before himself, he deals with scary situations using comedy (though sometimes he can’t help himself and shows his horror), he is tenacious and doesn’t give up (especially when his family is involved). And yes, he doesn’t have much character development or exploration, which is a shame. But I also think that there is something to be said about someone who knows what his values are and is consistent with those values over the course of years, even after his life is turned upside down. And even though they may have made it 1st person pov to make Ethan literally a player insert (also why they may have not shown his face), when I was playing I felt that instead of being an insert, I was watching his story play out through his eyes. Others will of course have a different experience with this and will see him differently. I personally love Ethan Winters and wish we could’ve seen more of him (and yes, the end of RE8 and parts of this dlc made me a bit teary-eyed😅). I am curious to see how Rose will play into future games, I hope they develop her character a bit more (b/c unlike Ethan, Rose is a teenage girl where a ton of development generally happens in a short period of time). And yes, the Beneviento part was probably one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen/played, very well done! Thanks for playing Jack!

      Exactly my thoughts, you said it all perfectly. I have a big soft spot for Ethan. He really grew on me over the course of the two games. It was the little things that made me grow to like him. He didn't have to have a big character arc for me to appreciate his values and his character.
      Not showing his face didn't make me any less invested either, I think that was actually an interesting and different way of telling a character's story. I'd almost call it refreshing.

    • @SwordmaidenGwen
      @SwordmaidenGwen 6 месяцев назад +1

      OMG yes, it's the same thing I say about the Hogwarts Legacy MC! Like, if a character does a particular thing consistently, that BECOMES character traits! Ethan is a sarcastic, dry, stoic guy with bad one-liners who loves his family more than anything and I love that subtle character building when he comments on enviromental things during the games and the way he's so dayum stubborn, even with Heisenberg when he really could have taken that deal.
      Like, it doesn't need to be big and flashy to be character building, the very act of going through the game is his character building, my dude coulda peaced out five mins into RE7 but he didn't and that takes balls of steel and they bother to make it really clear how hard it is for him to keep going, making him get hurt so much and fumbling 80% of the time, that shows tenacity, (and Hogwarts Legacy's MC is a polite stoic savage survivor haha).
      And I feel like there's something to say about writers not wanting to disappoint viewers by painting a picture too clearly, leaving room for imagination, like with his expression at the end, so I don't mind not seeing it, it's not as important as Rose's expression is to him ya'know? They really nailed that cringy protective overbearingly sappy dad vibe in RE8, and you gotta give props to the VA for managing to say those cheesy lines without laughing xP

    It's nice to see how (a) an actual child would grow up with weird powers around normal kids and (b) see her come to accept herself, powers and all. To see, at the start, how she panics over the mold veins on her hands, frantically brushing them away, and how that changes throughout the story. Like Sean sarcastically commented, "good message for the kids, if people dont like something about you, change it, instead of finding better friends", the message is her changing her mind. The end also helped explain why comparing her to Eveline triggered her so much, shes actually interacted with them. All in all, good use of recycled assets.
