    It seems to me that "VR anime" would benefit from stealing the structure of Visual Novels. Instead of static backdrops, it's individual rooms or locations. Fade in at the start of the scene, fade out at the end. Maybe you're Generic Protagonist for the scene or maybe you're just an invisible observer, but either way interaction is kept to a minimum. The characters say their lines, gesture, and walk around, but it's all pre-scripted because it's a story rather than a game. Maybe even borrow further mechanics of VNs, such as the Next Line Button, which will fast-forward if you hold it down. Or a way to select specific scenes. I feel that, at least until we figure out VR a little better, interaction should be something that the developers go all-in on, or leave it out completely.
    (And because all this extra modelling, texturing, rigging, and animation is going to be super expensive, maybe keep the "ero" to a minimum and go for something more mainstream. A little fanservice never hurts, but maybe this sort of thing has broad audience appeal, so it's a good idea not to scare off general audiences at the start.)

      I like the idea but I feel like Vr as a concept, and even this concept is still much better as a game making tool then a medium for tv and movies.

    I always appreciate your ideas and analyses, even for topics I previously had no interest in. I'd never heard of VR anime before watching this, and I'm glad my first exposure wasn't someone angrily ranting about it and instead was a measured response.
    Also, because I couldn't find anyone else who mentioned this, the film of a train that people thought was about to hit them was "Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat." "The Great Train Robbery," while also a major milestone in film history and development, is something different entirely. Comparing the early stages of VR to the early stages of film using "Arrival of a Train" is a great analogy, though

The game could be equal parts visual novel (getting to know your fellow pilots) and mech combat (from basic controls and training to full combat) with the added bonus of training the player to acclimate to playing in a VR space on both a storytelling and physical level.
    Bonus points: How you perform in the mech training affects paths in the novel.

      Did you enjoy it?
      I think I got through the LN in just under 48 hours after starting it, but I did start where the manga was currently up to at that point (which I think was the Frost Elves arc).
      I remember reading every ending chapter as they came out.

    • @5daboz
      @5daboz 4 года назад

      @@sirapple589 Hm ... I did "like" it. It is hard to say. Main premise is quite simple and easy and quite a few developments are pleasant, jokes keep being fun and once character starts developing he becomes more reasonable ... if I remember correctly. It feels so similar to "Overgeared" that I have to keep remembering which one am I thinking about ... but I liked Solo Levelling more as a story and less as a development. Solo is quite heavy on his notion that main char keeps risking his life and quite a few times, he survives only by factoring luck because he didnt want to wait till problems will become easy on their own by grinding for few years. "Same as So, I am a Spider, so What?", quite liked that one, even more than Solo. Most hard encounters like dog at Hell gates and Architect are response to his actions and wouldnt trigger if he wouldnt allow them + his encounter with architect is ... what? ... he wouldnt win if he were to choose the other reward and it seems like something too planed and important to give him a chance to miss on the opportunity ... I think author had quite a hard time figuring out how to make things fun and exciting and most developments are quite uninspired. And some later developments make no seanse if you think what they would mean for world-building when story was just starting, even when they quite nicely connect story, but most LN have this problems, because they cant correct past material, books are better in that regard, finished products. I think that I got most fun out of it through character interaction, his shadow army, all people with their little agendas and misinterpretations ... that was probably reason why I kept reading it. And I liked the theme of course. Overgeared for instance had better characters, not great, but better, at least in my eyes, he was more fun and he was a jerk, but world-building was bad to the point I doubt that author was out of highschool at the time of writing. Cant remember Solo having this problem, even if it was quite heavily whispering to Korean people, especially with "those dirty Japanese are shit and they should be grateful we tolerate them" felt quite personal. Anyway ... if I would have to give it a score ... 6-7/10, but it was a nice read. It is also one of the reads that prompted me into writing what I am working on as of now, but my standards for world-building are so high, that I might never manage to publish anything xD, so I can totally get why most people dont bother, stories would never be made with only people like me around :), but still ... it does hurt when nice stories feel cheap. I like them, but they still feel cheap. Right now, I had similar "love it, hate it, love it" with LN Re: Zero - Starting Life in Another World (but it is better than Solo) and new Overlord (

      Hey, don’t apologize for that, your opinion was clearly well informed and very interesting.
      I personally am a sucker for an OP protagonist story and Solo Levelling delivers that in spades.
      The real issue to me is that so many characters just get left behind, Demon Waifu, Baek (coolest MFer in the ‘verse), Choi and Ju-Hee are just the ones that stand out.
      The world is cool, it makes sense that China would use a different ranking system to the rest of the world, It makes sense that America would invest so heavily in getting as many S-ranks as possible. I couldn’t see any issues with the world building as the story went on.
      It’s nice to see a protagonist that actually thinks things through, he doesn’t just decide to do something, he seriously considers what to do.
      I just really enjoyed it, Cha Hae-In is best girl and Beru is best boy (fight me).

    My main question is "Who would the viewer be." At least in concept, there are three different places that the viewer could be placed: in the body of the main character, in the body of a side/background character, or in the third person as an invisible observer. However, just because the camera could be in one of those positions doesn't mean it should be. Also, I don't think switching between those different camera placements would be a good idea because of how jarring it would be, unless it was executed well.

    • @justanothershitpostinglose8800
      @justanothershitpostinglose8800 4 года назад

      Not only that, but imo 2/3 of those options just wouldn't be engaging. If you're in the body of a side character, you may have a role, but most of the time you'll be watching everyone else act without your input. At best, it'd be like the "cutscenes" in Half Life 2, at worst it'd be like the opening to Skyrim. If you're an observer with no character, then you're just watching a movie where you can direct the camera. If it's just a static story, and your involvement is minimal, why even make a VR game/experience in the first place, when a movie, show, or book could do the same for less money and with more accessibility?

    Immersion in VR can help with storytelling so much, offering it as a new medium on its own separate from actual video games. Circletoons's video on "The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners" portrays this good, but there are other really good ones. The VR game "Ghost Giant," although somewhat simple in execution, really helps the player connect with its main character Louis. *(Spoilers for Ghost Giant, check it out yourself plz it's really worth it)*
    Throughout the entire game you help Louis, a young boy probably no more than 12, try to keep his life together and terrified that if people found out his mother had depression, they'd take her away. You help him find ways to cheer up his mother, you repair his broken friendship, you give him hope. So at the end when you watch Louis cry and beg to the adults to not take his mother away, while completely powerless to do anything, it's heart wrenching, because the entire time it wasn't some other character helping Louis, it was YOU. And now you're completely powerless to do anything. By making the character YOU in the story, it adds a layer of depth and connection that no other medium can do. I for one, cannot wait for future titles to take advantage of this.

    While watching this video I couldn't help but feel that using VR for anime would be pointless when video games exist and are far easier and immersive to do in VR.

    I think as VR takes off, the line between 'game' and 'anime' is really gonna start to blur. We're going to start seeing hybrid media if they try to really take advantage of VRs potential.

    One thing I'd like to bring up is Hyperdimension Neptunia VIIR (read V2R) does its VR events. You are 'interacting' 1 on 1 with the characters and they all feel different than normal, and I initially disliked how forced the writing felt for some of them. Neptune is normal because she is always the fuck the 4th wall I'm just going to have fun character, but noire, vert, and blanc all feel incredibly forced. Noire acts overly interested in the player and really hypes up her tsundere act, blanc is outright shy and nervous instead of her normal quiet and reserved, and she also never goes into her angry mode, and finally vert bounces between trying to be seductive and an otaku. But then you think about it for a minute. All of these characters know they are in a game, and they know you are a player from one of the 'heavenly realms'. Getting you to like them is a form of self preservation, because as long as you keep buying their games, their games continue being made, meaning their lives continue onward.

    Yeah, VR is still in it's infancy so the experiences are mainly small in scope and somewhat clunky as they figure out there rules. As time passes it'll become cheaper to develop for and the rules will be figured out so the scale, complexity, and quality of VR will improve. VRs been around for awhile, but it's only just started actually taking off and I think Half Life Alyx may be the actual start of mainstream VR usage and development. Not because it is or isn't x quality threshold but simply for driving interest and headset sales like nothing before. Beat Saber just can't pull VR by itself.

    For real though, the reason why VR anime can't become what you describe is because it would take too much money and work to realize and would be a MASSIVE, MASSIVE financial risk because of how small the VR market realistically is.
    So far, the only franchise who has enough money and power to even try it would Fate. And we all know that a Fate VR would just absolutely be a waifu vehicle. And we all know that it would sell the most.

    • @kittyshippercavegirl
      @kittyshippercavegirl 4 года назад

      A Fate VR game would be great!.... if it had been made before grand order happened and ruined everything
      Edit: For clarification, I think a Fate VR game based on Stay Night or an original grail war scenario which focused on the actual story and having interesting and developed characters (like Stay Night) could be really good but because Grand Order is so popular (despite being imo one of the worst Fate related things to ever exist) it would just become another platform for the poorly designed and ridiculously oversexualised grand order characters, which would just suck

    Sadly, VR is likely 5-10 years away from being a viable medium. First of all, we *really* need the software available to be more than just ludicrously priced tech demos. And, we also need the software to figure out less gimmicky control methods as everything available at the moment is either puke city or super awkward.
    Some VR porn is pretty interesting, though.

    • @legathar8558

      I submit to you: HL: A, Boneworks (Both $60 fully fleshed out games), etc. Teleportation isn't puke city, although it's slightly awkward until 360 treadmills come out there's no fix for that. Also before you start complaining about the price, most headsets are cost around $500, which, while expensive, isn't prohibitively expensive and it's a lot like buying a new console.
