In a small shower, the problem with a shelf is that it takes up more real estate as the wall needs to be brought forward A niche can be placed between the studs so it is recessed in the wall.
True, but even more of a reason to keep it (as the word literally translates) on the smaller side. And, if I might suggest, on a surface where the recess won't catch as much water as elsewhere. That will leave the visual line uninterrupted for the sense of space one often wants but give you practical space for what's needed and not for growing mould/dead soap gunk/ container collection. @@mrphoenixgrey 1. It is not incorrect to pronounce foreign-originating words that have become part of English in the English pronunciation, and 2. Foyer entered the English language way back when French still had a rhotic R (hard R sound), and it was pronounced as "foy-er" in French and English. Then over time the French accent changed to a non-rhotic R and their pronunciation of foyer changed to "foy-ay" while English pronunciation remained the same. THANK YOU! for the correct pronunciation of niche. I am so sick of nitch. As I remind people, it rhymes with quiche. Now if we can get them to say sachet properly.
I refuse to buy anything an influencer showcases in their home. I try to buy unique pieces that fit my style. I do have things others have but I try to avoid it
I have a tub shower so I had to make vertical niches so the tub bather could reach soap shampoo conditioner and the shower person would not have to bend to get their soaps shampoo. My two children have more bathroom condiments than you can imagine. And that includes my son! So they have used up the niche. If I did Schluter I would have needed at least 5 of those tiny corner shelves. No thanks. I did two vertical niches three feet tall two feet wide. Travertine marble back in a subway black grout shower tub combo polished chrome fixtures. The niches are outlined in black ceramic edge tile. They look beautiful. But I can’t see them bc they are behind a shower curtain! A glass door is dangerous when you have a tub especially if you bath children in it. My two are grown but I kept the shower curtain look when I renovated. I like your ideas and that you consider safety in your recommendations. 👍🏻
Per Miriam Webster There is a debate about how you are supposed to pronounce niche. There are two common pronunciation variants, both of which are currently considered correct: \NEESH\ (rhymes with sheesh) and \NICH\ (rhymes with pitch). \NICH\ is the more common one and the older of the two pronunciations. It is the only pronunciation given for the word in all English dictionaries until the 20th century, when \NEESH\ was first listed as a pronunciation variant in Daniel Jones's English Pronouncing Dictionary (1917). \NEESH\ wasn’t listed as a pronunciation in our dictionaries until our 1961 Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged, and it wasn’t entered into our smaller Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary until 1993. Even then, it was marked in the Collegiate as a pronunciation that was in educated use but not considered acceptable until 2003. All this is to say that the historical pronunciation has been \NICH\, and that \NEESH\ is a relative newcomer that came about likely under influence from French pronunciation conventions. At this point in time in the U.S., \NICH\ is still the more common pronunciation, but \NEESH\ is gaining ground. Our evidence suggests that in British English, \NEESH\ is now the more common pronunciation.
In German you call a niche "Niesche", pretty similar to the french pronunciation (only the "e" at the end you would pronounce too). I think you have a great sense of style and in every oppinion you're sharing is truth, even if I wouldn't agree
From a French speaking person. Thank you. I am so annoyed to perfectly pronounce a word and then the other look at me with a blank stare. It's *niche* , not Nietzsche .
And actually in French we don’t use « foyer » to describe the same thing ! Foyer means either the household or the fireplace. For the first room after the front door it’s « entrée ».
D.Daddy, you are soooooooo right, but a lot of the styles featured here are for the very young and collegiate. So, they may have their place in a college kids dorm or bedroom at home. Agree! These styles are hideous, but most people follow trends, unfortunately. Run 🏃♂️
Meh the appeal of the mushroom is the actual mushroom. Instead of replicating the shape, which can be a bit phallic IMO, just add smaller accessories. I like adding cute mushrooms ceramic pieces inside plants or lean into mushrooms and gnomes for like Christmas, which is already a little kitschy.
Hello! Your pronounciation of "niche" is perfect. "Foyer" though... I don't think any french person would understand what your are talking about out of context ;) By the way, in french, the way americans use "foyer" does not make any sense. We say "entrée" (entrance). Foyer means a home or a fireplace.
“Mushroom is for a very specific type of person or type of room” My daughter is 10, awesomely weird, and wants mushrooms in her bedroom. I think that’s the type of person and room he’s talking about. For a child in a room that’s hidden.

I honestly think that if someone hates holes, like I forget the phobia, but I've heard about it, and oof this design would set someone OFF . They would be like "Hm...your wood choice is vile."
Agreed!

Like Neon and checker are something I love. I also have Lydia Deets as my avatar lol. I'll have both and make it work.
This was such a helpful video! Almost bought a checkered rug. Was dying at “pops of color” part because I say that about interior design and my wardrobe style 😂.
Totally agree with checkered board rug. I'm ok with large muted checkered board rug though.
Three Birds did a beautiful muted one on a surfers beach house.
I so love your common sense and attention to long term value.
Oh and it's not fójee it's fojéé.
But yours is already better than 90 % of the Americans ❤
What do you think of curved sofas? Too trendy or timeless?
Now my tiny brain is trying to work out how to style a red Persian heavily patterned rug so its not as eye drawing as a chequerboard rug.. and failing - any advice anyone? Also it's round so what are the best furniture layouts to consider
MAKE IT A SERIES!!!!
THANK YOU! for the correct pronunciation of niche. I am so sick of nitch. As I remind people, it rhymes with quiche. Now if we can get them to say sachet properly.
I refuse to buy anything an influencer showcases in their home. I try to buy unique pieces that fit my style. I do have things others have but I try to avoid it
I agree 💯 percent, my home is full of unique one of a kind pieces. NOT IKEA OR HOMEGOODS.
Please clarify instead of a niche in the shower we are to make a natural shelf? I dn't want to drill a shelf into the tile. Pls answer ty
I love these videos ❤❤❤
I have had a checkboard rug weakness. I can’t change it yet or my friends and family will be on my back 😂 I’ll need to repurpose it
I have a tub shower so I had to make vertical niches so the tub bather could reach soap shampoo conditioner and the shower person would not have to bend to get their soaps shampoo. 👍🏻
Same comment I did about your stripe chair before - intense
Per Miriam Webster
There is a debate about how you are supposed to pronounce niche.
Bravo and encore! 🙌
In German you call a niche "Niesche", pretty similar to the french pronunciation (only the "e" at the end you would pronounce too). I think you have a great sense of style and in every oppinion you're sharing is truth, even if I wouldn't agree
You called it on the Sottsass Wood being beautiful but intense. It just screams that it will be dated in 5 minutes.
It is a timeless wood that is trending now. What makes it trendy is the colors used and the way it is applied to everything.
I’d love a quick tutorial on the rules for pop of color. ❤
Elsker, elsker dine ideer.
I will not have anyone tell me I can't love mushrooms and toadstools! 😂
From a French speaking person.
Thank you.
I am so annoyed to perfectly pronounce a word and then the other look at me with a blank stare.
It's *niche* , not Nietzsche .
I don't know DD, I think the Smurfs might disagree with you about mushroom décor.
They’re going to come for me, I know I better lock my doors 🤣
@@mrphoenixgrey Papa Smurf is coming for you. 🤣🤣
OMG - I had a boss who said, "Are you sales people or mushrooms?" We all started to pick the type of mushroom we would be... No one said "Lamp!"
@12:05 you’re welcome. T.y. 🎉🙏🏼
I think the niche would be beautiful with the same material and a hidden light strip in the top.
I do like theburl wood. In small amounts.
Mushroom coat hooks? 🤭👀! (they need to be sold with a flared base, if they be lookin’ like that 🥲)
😅
And actually in French we don’t use « foyer » to describe the same thing ! Foyer means either the household or the fireplace. For the first room after the front door it’s « entrée ».
D.Daddy, you are soooooooo right, but a lot of the styles featured here are for the very young and collegiate. So, they may have their place in a college kids dorm or bedroom at home. Agree! These styles are hideous, but most people follow trends, unfortunately. Run 🏃♂️
I stand by our pronunciations. Borrowed words are rarely pronounced like the original language.
What color is your paint? I can't tell if it's gray or brown.
Is “foyer” appropriate term for residential entry area? Doesn’t it mean furniture-less lobby in a public building (hotel, theater, etc)?
My sun and star stuff came back around
Pop of color! 😉
Everybody should add some kitsch into their lives. it is an instant mood lifter.
Hello! Your pronounciation of "niche" is perfect. "Foyer" though... I don't think any french person would understand what your are talking about out of context ;) By the way, in french, the way americans use "foyer" does not make any sense. We say "entrée" (entrance). Foyer means a home or a fireplace.
We call ours the front hall.
“Mushroom is for a very specific type of person or type of room”
My daughter is 10, awesomely weird, and wants mushrooms in her bedroom. I think that’s the type of person and room he’s talking about. For a child in a room that’s hidden.
'Sottsass Wood'....Acid trip!.
THANK YOU for the anti "pop of color" opinion. The minute I hear that, I change the channel or turn the page. Next to that one is the new "elevate" which you see at least 50x a day on the internet. EVERY advertisement has it. It's so boring when everyone uses it.
the worst and corniest decoration would be attaching those big fonts on the wall " home sweet home" " i love myself" probably some of the worst things you can do for home decoration
