A lot of the time, I agree with Design Daddy but, when it comes to that chair sitting to his right, the one that looks like the love child of a Dr. Suess character & Beetlejuice that was conceived on the set of Sesame Street, I have to question his taste. It dominates the room & screams hysterically for attention.
@@ThatsJustPeechy Everytime I see it, I wait for it to open a pair of long lashed eye, sprout arms & legs & run around the room making freaky mewling sounds.
I always liked Mary Tyler Moore's "M" on her wall. She was a single woman, claiming her space as her own (plus I loved her first apartment!). I left an abusive marriage after 20+ years. I have my initial on the wall, just like Mary. It reminds me this is my home and no one will bully me out of it.
Right on sistah. That's one of my fave shows. I like the signs if they have meaning, but putting the one word "Eat" or "Laundry" really means nothing and adds nothing.
I think that M started everything but like you I loved it. I have a real grocery sign from a grocery store that says"grocery" over my pantry door (it is supposed to have a light behind it), another vintage wrought iron and wood sign for a coffee shop and a third made of tin for some kind of French sundries. I am keeping them. Now that they aren't trending, it is a good time to pick up the real commercial antique pieces that people get rid of along with the DIY crap.
You mean like big, tufted, over-stuffed recliners? That's my ick. And I've rarely seen one that didn't have any stains on it. That adds to the ick factor.
Plants aren't about decor though. It's a hobby, oftentimes a major one. Plant lovers try to make plants fit into our decor because where else are we supposed to put them? Growing and caring for plants is one of my favourite activities. I've probably spent thousands on gorgeous planters over the years, just to make my hobby work in my space. Not all of us have garden spaces or greenhouses we can play around in. Not all of us can do a deck garden all year round because of the weather where we live. And who doesn't have hobbies? Musicians display their instruments. Quilters display their quilts. Chefs display their kitchenware. Collectors display their collections. Those people are encouraged to show off their creations or collections. It would be wonderful to have information and inspiration on how to design and style with plants, because there isn't much out there beyond the very basics of "group them together and display them at different heights." Also I've been growing plants in the same home for almost 28 years and I don't have any mold issues! Maybe if your climate is already super humid or you're watering your houseplants with a hose or something, I dunno.
In another video he disagreed with people who like crystals. Well I like books, art, plants and crystals. He gives some good advice but there’s a reason there are so many interior decorators. People have different styles and opinions.
This is a difference in designing that suits everyone and hobbies, I've only been into plants fpr 4 years but I have almost 100 through small hoya and succulent cuttings 😂I may have to make favorites decisions someday but not today 😅
All of the pictures shown on this video of plants were truly excessive - to the point of destroying the function of the room. The other thing to keep in mind is that in my 65 years, I have never been in a home with excessive plants that all looked 100% healthy like the ones in this video.. The overwhelming majority of people with excessive plants have far too many ugly unkempt plants. Even the one photo of just a shelving unit looked like a disheveled mess. Some of those plants were beautiful, but they weren't displayed in a manor to call attention to them.
@@mrphoenixgrey what is that on the wall behind you? Even though it's painted dark, I can see it. Wasn't quite sure what that was. Since we are giving opinions, I am not a fan of all the darkness of your background. I understand it's more masculine but I want things lighter.
Same with eternally curvy lumpy sofas ☁️ with crazy busy pattern or fuzzy textures that cats shredded to pieces … it will be dated in 2 years .. jail, straight to jail. 😩🚨🚨🚓🚓🚨🚨 --oh and color changing LED LIGHTS ! Jaaaail! 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
For many “plant people” the plants are our hobby and passion; we collect certain plant species and varieties and grow them from tiny cuttings. We buy and sell cuttings and also whole plants according to our interest towards certain specific plants. We have specific care plans for every plant and we study the needs (light, moisture, growing patterns) and we get so happy with every new leaf and so on. We curate our collection and sometimes go overboard on spending in tiny one leaf cutting. But it’s our very interesting hobby and we love our plants. So the jungle vibe is not a design thing but a hobby that takes quite a bit room in our homes. I would love some pro designers to do content about how to fit hobbies in design and also pets; not just cats and dogs but others too.
Yup. But I bet the haters have a bar cart. I’d rather have an orchid than a drink at a restaurant! That makes me happy. My house is for me. No one else. Don’t like it. Hotel down the freeway!
I love plants and I have hundreds but they are mostly outside, on my porch and lanai, because yes, they can bring too much humidity into the house and if not controlled, can lead to mold, the same as with everything that involves moisture inside a home.
I never really thought of it that way but yes, I agree. The centerpiece of my home is my fishtank. I have live plants growing in it along with growing out of it. I have special lighting inside the tank for the aquatics along with a growlight suspended for the land plants growing hydroponically. I am always on the lookout for something interesting to try.
Ok for you it’s a clearly passionate hobby. For the majority of jungle homes it is in fact their design choice. They see influencers with crazy amounts of plants & macrame (a la 70’s) plant holders & wicker shelves. He also said there is a place for plants and didn’t say they were bad in general.
Same! I will always brag about how cheap I got something (clothes, furniture, food, anything!) but bragging about how expensive something was, is really so embarrassing. Cringe
For those of us with grey floors we're stuck with, would love a video on how to work with/around/downplay/compliment/make due. Same for honey oak/orange.
Tint them with a ,,Lazure" in any brown You like......and If You do it Yourself, and it get s a bit cloudy....it s ,,antique"! Every shade of Brown is better, than Grey or Orange!
I can't help you with your gray floors, but I can help you with your grammar. The phrase you're looking for is "make do". A lot of people mistake it as "due" instead, and some even have coherent reasons for thinking this, but it's "do".
Yes!!! I've seen, I think 2 places where they actually worked perfectly and added to the space! Of course they weren't barn styled and had prettier sliding system hardware, too, which helped. But in general? Awful.
Sir, I have so much to say, but first I have to apologize. I don’t know how you ended up in my feed, but I’m so thankful you did! When you first started talking about your design “Icks”, I thought to myself “great. Another arrogant interior designer who thinks that everyone’s house needs to be a reflection of your style, not the homeowner’s.” Boy, was I wrong! Usually at this point I would have gone to the next video, but I kept watching. Everything you said is spot on and makes so much sense. While I do have quotes on my walls, they are personal family quotes from loved ones that only make sense if you’re in my home. The way you explained the reasons behind why you think people shouldn’t have these “icks” in their homes is brilliant, and you have made a subscriber out of me. I’m definitely a fan!
They make me want to sneak a sign into a decor store that says DIE CRY HATE and hide it among the Live Laugh Love signs. I was thinking today I wouldn't mind a word sign saying Home Sweet Home, but only if it was in Klingon.
I’ve HATED words on walls, in frames, etc. since I first noticed the trend. I refuse to use the word “art” in describing such tacky decoration attempts. When I see this stuff in another person’s home, I feel like I’m being nagged by a know-it-all. Reminds me of kindergarten or early grammar school where teachers are prone to plaster words all over the walls of their classrooms. At least there, words have a purpose because the setting is, after all, dedicated to teaching children. As an adult, I’m not interested in experiencing that kind of lesson in someone else’s home. I’ll form my own values, thank you.
Nothing wrong with it. If you guys feel contempt for words then you gotta lighten up. I have seen it done well and i have seen motivational quotes on wall frames, it can put a smile on my face.
So leave it’s a persons house and they can do with it whatever they want. Especially when you have a minute wanna leave the damn toilet seat up sometimes a damn sign is necessary.
👏👏👏👏Someone needs to call out these 'influencers' that gloat about the cost of their home or items they purchased for the home. Just because something cost $20,000 doesn't automatically make it beautiful, practical or necessary.
Not liking curtains because you don't like the photos you showed us is like not liking lingerie because you saw a Victoria's secret show that had the wings and everything. I know I'm writing this to a gay man, but still. Simple curtains look awesome and are very practical
Exactly, no major published designer would agree with him either. He cherry picked photos to make his point too- although a couple (10:38/11:00) weren't bad. Curtains add so much to a space beyond privacy. Saying you shouldn't have more fabric on your bed than your windows is wrong. Far too many people try to get by with one width per a window which never looks good. Plus I despise how windows become black reflexive boxes at night. It is just plain creepy. I love working curtains and I love closing them at night. The room has an entirely different feel warm and cozy feeling after the curtains are closed. I have had custom curtains made for every house and apartment I have ever owned. When we had less money I would shop interior fabric outlets for remnants and employee bargain seamstresses who were building their portfolios. I learned to use custom curtains from my mother. When we would move the first things she would do was to order the curtains.
I thought he started off okay - he titled it "excessive window treatments" and the first images he used were those tacky, really overdone styles. But then he got into classier ones and I was confused. The two you pointed out were the same two I thought were actually pretty (though I'd rip the tassels off the blue). I also don't mind the basic style at 10:52. I'm not fond of the fabrication there with the fringe and I actually prefer a straight line rather a scallop... I also like wood cornices. What I hate, for the most part, are blinds alone. I'm fine with blinds under curtains. I love shutters. But I love curtains and custom window treatments. And you're absolutely right - the biggest mistake made is skimpy curtains!
Oh dear, I got to the end of your ick list and realized something amazing. Your perspective is humorous, honest on every level, and brave. Too many designers and owners buying into trends and boasting about the cost. Bravo!
A funny one with Word Art : for several years in my toilets, as a joke, I had a Frozen poster nailed on the door with only the letter LET IT GO written on it. 🤣
I will be so glad when farmhouse decor is over. On homestead rescue the woman buys so many of the ugly signs and radon junk..people still go bunkers over it.
I have a really bad habit of gloating about bargains that I find on furniture, clothes, etc. I can't help it, it just flies out of my mouth before I can stop myself. I'm a teacher with champagne tastes. Someone complimented me on a dress I was wearing...I blurted "I only paid $20 for it because I had to repair the embroidery"! Ugh. It's a compulsion.
But that kind of “reverse bragging” is fun - and useful! I have a coffee table that cost me $40 at an auction 25 years ago, now selling on 1st Dibs for $6,000. You can bet I brag about it, but I’m equally proud of the $10 bargains I buy at Habitat. You have to know your audience, of course…..I only do it with good friends who have the same interests.
I agree on the financial gloating ick. I think it's a gross amount of excess in a time when so many people are struggling and really gives "insecure". Super 🤢
We bought a house this summer and one of the only things I told the real estate agent was “if it has a geometric accent wall, do not even show it to me” because not only are they ugly AF but it’s a sign that the cheapest house flipper you ever met in your life renovated that house and all of the faucets and light fixtures will be falling out in a week. Why would I want to buy a house where I have to spend an hour prying scrap wood off the wall before I can have people in my home without feeling embarrassed?
I giggled when you talked about too many plants…guilty🤣 I have over thirty in my 2,500 square foot house. I love plants;) I love hearing your opinions and advice🩵
😂😂😂😂😂 watched this out on my patio and was laughing so hard that my neighbor came over to ask what I was watching. I could barely answer I was cry-laughing so hard... 😂😂😂😂😂 Love this! ❤
Ok… I fixed up my daughter’s garage to make it organized for her supplies… I have stored some furniture in it… we both hate word art… but I did word art on some empty wall space saying “Amanda’s She Shed” as a joke… to bug her and make her laugh… so, guilty as charged but it was worth it, 😂
The opposite side of the color chart oranges etc also go with grey and or blue which can look like grey. Grey everything is not my choice but I do appreciate the versatility of grey. You just have to work with it.
Agree with you. I live in Australia and only have two maybe three cold months out of twelve. Most people dont need rugs for warmth and our lifestyle is inside/outside living . .. often pools and patios. Grey floors are not as cringe worthy here. We often have temps of 40 degrees Celsius/104 Farhenheit so grey floors do work. Time and place. 😊
The one time I saw a decal that really worked was a friend of mine with a very tiny flat. She wanted an antique hat stand for her coats, but didn’t have the space. So she got a decal of one, and screwed a trio of hangers in to made a shadow hat stand. But it was very subtle, like a couple of shades darker than her wall colour, and was in a deliberately kitsch, maximalist space. I’m not sure it would have worked anywhere else.
A skilled interior designer should prioritize the homeowners' tastes and habits, integrating them into the design. While some elements may universally be considered unappealing, designers can sometimes overstep by imposing their own preferences rather than considering they are creating a space for someone else. If a client prefers gray, the designer should embrace it rather than imposing personal tastes. Similarly, if someone enjoys having numerous plants, that preference should be accommodated. Personally, I appreciate spaces with abundant greenery, as they create a vibrant and enjoyable atmosphere. There are effective ways to incorporate many plants into design that enhance aesthetic appeal. I occasionally watch your videos, but it appears you often emphasize your personal design preferences excessively. It seems as though you categorically dislike or favor certain things; for instance, if you dislike gray, it must be eradicated from every space according to your tastes. However, I believe that different spaces demand diverse design approaches. Even elements you may dislike can contribute positively to a well-designed and beautiful space if incorporated thoughtfully.
Agreed. Everyone should do what they like. But this is his channel and will of course be his opinions. The only reason to go along with his opinions is probably for resale value. Other than that you do you!
@@camellia8625 Being interested in someone's preferred aesthetic doesn't mean you have to agree with every suggestion they make. When you hire a professional to design your home, you might appreciate their style, but that doesn’t mean you’ll accept every design choice they propose. It’s perfectly reasonable to have your own preferences and make adjustments to ensure the final result aligns with your vision.
Interior designers are often hired because clients have a vision but may not know how to bring it to life. That's where he comes in. It's interesting that you assume he'll impose his personal preferences, when in fact, many of his suggestions don't align with his own tastes. Take the chair behind him, for example-that thing is not for everyone. He’s also not claiming his recommendations are the ultimate solution but if he’s hired to help YOU, yeah he’ll voice it. Like it or not, in my opinion, his points are valid. Take it or leave it. 🤷🏻♀️
How do you feel about the "stickers" in children's rooms? I feel like I can give that a pass because it's temporary and can easily be changed or removed as the child grows.
Use what you like. That sounds like a great way to decorate a kid's room with easy-to-update themes. It's a lot easier to change that than wallpaper! Would you rather your kid have a comfortable room that is theirs, or something from a home magazine? I had a friend growing up who had a lovely bedroom, but she wasn't even allowed to sit on the bedspread once her bed was made. They had a beautiful house, but it was not a homey place to visit.
Why would you care what HE thinks? Its happiness for your baby. Do what you like. This is Stupid. You want a home u love or what some random so called in crowd does? Live life dont follow this stupid stuff. So sad people fall for this.
Grey is a lot better than the colors of the 1970s - harvest gold and avocado green. They were really ugly color shades that didn't go together. Grey is calming.
@@zhmw The harvest gold and avocado green actually worked with the decor of the time. They were just over done so people got tired of them, just as people get tired of anything over done. But grey isn't even a colour. It is a combination of white (absence of colour) and black (combination of all colours). It's kind of a cop out, no answer choice.
Thank you for all of your advice and honesty. I am 70 years old and most of my home designs are DYI. I appreciate your advice on trends, so my house will not look iike an "OLD LADY'S HOUSE." Some of my friends have not changed their home decor in 20 years. They see my home and often ask, How I keep up. Please keep these videos coming. I certainly appreciate your hard work. Blessings,
Seasonal decoration is another most annoying thing to me.. It’s ok to have little bit of accents but changing everything every season gives me anxiety!
OMG! The first one you mentioned, is the first one on my list too! You are hysterical and completely entertaining! I look forward to watching more videos! Preach, please!!
I’m so glad I found this video. I wish I could send to my landlord. Red, grey, black and white kitchen and dining room. One bedroom with a pink, green , brown and white striped wall. And a lounge room with a dark grey wall. And people wonder why I prefer being outside 😂
I feel like I could have recorded this same video! You hit almost all of my "icks", especially the geometric walls and prison gray. However, I do need to add those half circles that are painted above beds and furniture; seriously, just ick and ugh. While I'm at it, I like mushrooms on my pizza and salad, but definitely spare me all those cheap mushroom lamps.
I just thought of a hilarious surprise birthday party for you. Your design friends arrange for the party venue to have every one of these icks including "the bragger". Then they'll start a drinking game for every time you say "No, just no!". Then while everyone is scrounging through purses and backpacks for a spare Xanex as you lie down with a cool damp cloth on your forehead, they quickly tear it all down and put up something simple and marvelous and you wake up like Dorothy ... home again where those awful things can't happen. As you say, sadly, the grey floor can only be covered up - such a crime.
Sorry I just got to Your Show this week a few days late. My father just passed and this has taken up my world and now I can appreciate what I love which is to see You. 😊
💯 on the word art EXCEPT my house motto. On an antiquing trip to visit my friend in the Midwest, I found a gorgeous cast iron salvage piece that I dragged home to the east coast. I commissioned an artist to make a bespoke wood burned plaque with a Latin phrase that is my house motto (per aspera ad astra) to fit in the center of my iron piece and it's mounted on the wall of my house in my garden. And it's amazing. I will die on this hill.
@@epluribusunum1460 I wish I could post a photo. The artist who did the burned wood sign incorporated roses and stars on the plaque. It makes me happy and feel connected to my space
I don't even like for mail boxes to say "MAIL". Well, duh. If the "mail" man is confused about what that box beside the door is for ? ? ? ? don't tell him.
Agree 99.9%. I still need drapes to block out the light at night but I can not STAND a valance or excessive amounts of fabric because I need Light! Excessive plants is a hoarding problem, like having too many cats!
If it makes you feel good, then go for it! If you light up when you enter your space because of particular design elements then it's for you! No one has to agree with it when it's in your space. People can only tell you what works for them. And that's fine when they're referencing their space. Not yours, so feel free to love what you love in your home. It's a personal decision ❤ Love this channel, very entertaining! Fits right in with a HGTV show, even better ❤
I work for Very wealthy people in SW Florida. They Never brag or tell you what something costs. Only New $ and I will no longer work for Those people. Sucks to have people constantly telling you how Rich they are and reminding me constantly how much less I have
No hate here. I agree with almost every one of your icks. But I have an excessive amount of plants in my bay window. Actually I have at least one plant in every room. I don't have guests very often and I do get nice comments. My plants are other people's accent wall in my living room. I totally agree with you on everything else. If I had better sun exposure in this old house they would be spread out better. One preference to another.
Love that you unapologetically speak your truth. Plant person here. I have over 200. My space could be included in your examples of what not to do 😂 Because there are so many examples of overwhelmingly planty spaces, I think people assume we all have the same approach to incorporating plants into our homes. My plants have designated spaces where they grow well. There are nearby empty spaces and surfaces in every room with plants so it doesn’t feel overwhelming (and it’s helpful when I’m going around maintaining my plants to have places to place my watering cans, paper towels, etc.). I have grow lights hidden just about everywhere there are plants and they lean warm (so not cold and not purple). Cords are hidden. The warm light brightens up what would be a very dark home. My pots blend into the background and in many cases, we installed cabinets that fit the spaces they’re in so each plant grouping is framed out like art). Gnats can absolutely be eradicated and I wish my plants raised the humidity because mine is too low and its leads to issues. I bet you could make an amazing video about how people style spaces nicely with plants. There are some pretty great examples out there if you know where to look.
I’ve just found you. Thank goodness. I’m British and we just don’t like bragging about the cost of things . I’m just loving your honest approach, and fortunately, I’m agreeing with everything you say so far.
Daddy, here is my design philosophy in three words..."simpler is better". I like a relaxing atmosphere in my home and I can't feel relaxed with a lot of "stuff" going on. And you are so right about grey! Sometimes I see interior photos and I can't tell if I'm looking at a black and white photo or not. That's just depressing.
I agree with you 10000% on the bragging about how much it cost. Give me a break, I make medium income, have a modestly furnished home and don't need to hear everything you bought that I couldn't possibly afford or even want in my house! Thank you for pointing it out!
My bathroom is grey. In my defence I rent so didn’t choose it. The North of the UK has endless grey weather too . Why bring the outside in, when the outside is mainly awful.
I happen to agree with every point you made today. Hey, people need guidance in what is genuinely tasteful, timeless and classy in order to be able to cultivate their own style and learn how to feather their nest in a beautiful way. I appreciated your words about how basically vile it is to go about blathering on about the beaucoup dollars one spends on their decor. I would love to see a revival on etiquette and social graces. That is something I am working on personally. Would you consider doing an episode on helping guide people with decorating their porches and lawns? There seems to be a growing problem of bad "art and furniture" spilling out into people's yards making them look sad and unwelcoming. Would love to have you share your thoughts on that topic.
The thing is that paint can fix a lot of grey but….the grey floors!! Unless you illegally procured some petrified wood, how in the name of all that is holy, do you see that looking like ‘real’ wood!?
That is one of the trends I didn’t drink the cool-aide-gray. Always thought it was gloomy. It’s the new neutral, blah, blah. It had its moment for 10 years.
Always hated grey for the same reasons you provided in the video and then I visited Mediterranean and it was so full of color, bright and vibrant and not even warm, scorching hot, just the nature I'm talking about, that once we stayed in all grey and white home I suddenly actually started liking it. For the first time grey was soothing and not depressing. This grey apartment, spacious, full of sunshine, huge windows, minimalistic design made the all grey everything design that I always hated feel good somehow.
Automatic subscribed, I never laughed so much with a interior design video. Plus your point of people always talking about how much things cost, talk about bad taste! Should definitely go first on the list lol
You are so amazing Phoenix. 😂😂😂. I wish I could afford you as an interior designer. Definitely would support your business. Always, look forward to seeing your content / videos. Stay beautiful. ❤
Hi Design Daddy, I agree with your ICKS. Thank you for mentioning heavy drapery. I would add in cornices above windows! They are usually wooden and just collect dust! Plus, they just darken the room. It would be good to suggests alternative to people. I like roman shades, Or the honey comb top-down, botton-up blinds. I agree, a true grey is rarely a good choice in wall color. It always looks like a prison to me! A better choice is a griege or taupe tones that gives a home a modern, clean updated look. These colors have a mix of beige and grey. They are warmer but have a bit of grey that gives a home a crisp look. Most paint colors today in the Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, Behr, etc in the light neutral tones are a mix of these grieve/ taupe tones with different undertones to help you match your floors, cabinets, or personal style.
I'd much rather see an item that was made with love by a child or someone's great-aunt than a $10,000 rug. That is a most cherished item that I will gush over.
Bragging about wealth is utterly classless. The nouveau riche are looked down upon for this reason. I would rather talk about how much I saved. And only with close family.
Grey/silver flooring is really popular in the UK. Its a colder climate where the grey hues complement the dreary weather we have here. I have silver coloured laminate in my kitchen and it looks really good. Nothing bad to say about it
Your rant about grey was channeled from me! Gah! You nailed it about grey being so depressing especially if anyone has spent winters near the Great Lakes when the sky can be grey for 2 weeks at a time. If I see one more house with that grey wash luxury vinyl flooring I’m going to barf.
Plants….uh oh. Grey floors, only left in my bedroom and you’re correct, very limited on color choices - like when I died my hair pink, very limited in clothing.
Agree on everything and thanks for talking about the gray. p.s. And now, they even name their children *Grey* . I mean, if you hate your child, just give him/her to adoption!
IDK, man. My son has ADHD. At one point, I saw a framed list of numbered morning tasks and I thought, "Normally, I would think this was stupid. But, in his case, it might not be such a bad idea to have this on the wall. It would save me asking, 'Have you done X?' and him running back to do it." For whatever reason, printing them out or writing them on a whiteboard just isn't working. Alas, one of the tasks didn't apply and there was no matching bedtime task list. If it had worked for us, $20 for sanity in the morning and evening would have been well worth it. But I wouldn't have considered it art-- just another experiment to try to help him manage mornings and evenings.
How have I never heard of you before? I knew we were a match when you got to geometric walls. All i ever think is "why?" Then "achoo." Also, thanks for adding "....and if you like it, you shouldn't!" subscribed
As much as I love plants, very valid point about the optimal humidity levels needed for greenery often being in conflict with that needed to preserve the property / repel mould.
The grey color popularity was helpful when I was house hunting 3 years ago. It helped me spot and avoid the flips quickly. I think the people flipping homes were the last to get the word that grey was out, &/or they still have a large stock of grey LVF to use up. Cheaply.
OMG!! The word art!! I worked retail, in a store with a large housewares department, during the Live, Laugh, Live heyday. I had to grit my teeth every time I sold one to someone who went on and on about how cute/inspirational/touching it was. 🤮🤮 If I ever walked into a friend's home, and they had those Grind, Hustle, Execution, pictures on the wall, the friendship would be over!! I wouldn't know who they were anymore.
You listed quite a few of my design icks. Agreed with word art, decals, and gray everything. Decals in particular become difficult to remove from walls if you want to change things up later. Curtains work if you have a traditional or transitional home. They don't really fit a more modern aesthetic, unless they are minimal in the pattern and are in a solid color and focus on the panels rather than the heavy valances.
Thank you for your video. I also don't like grey (too much grey) and you are right that if you leave in Canada where the sky is grey for at least 6 months then grey is no no. I also despised influencers who brag how much they paid for some items. I don't talk about money I just enjoy having them. Have a great day.
I'd agree with most of those for sure. Drapes have their place and can make an enormous difference (and also are amazing about cutting down on outside noise), but what you said was excess drapery, and that's true, it can be overdone. But my favourite one you dislike is going on about the cost of everything. You're so right, NO ONE wants to hear that, and it's rude. I hate being asked how much something costs myself, I sure don't want to hear from someone how much they're paying for stuff. Living by novelty is one I'd add to your list: always having to have something just because it's a novelty, to me that means they have no taste of their own, don't know what looks good, have no sense of proportion, or anything. It's like not having a personality, just a personality display.
I think the pictures of houses that are practically jungles on the inside look cool because I love nature and plants and would live in a greenhouse if I could but in reality unless you hire someone dedicated to caring for them and cleaning around them it does turn into a big mess and the plants are not going to stay looking that good. That being said I don’t think people with excessive amounts of houseplants are doing it as a design trend but because they actually just love plants in which case who cares, it’s a hobby not just an aesthetic.
But if my laundry room doesn't have a sign that says "laundry " how will I know where to wash my clothes?

I agree. It’s a very ugly chair that is extremely distracting. I keep finding my eyes drifting towards it, instead of focusing on the speaker.
In my world, it is a flex getting quality stuff for pocket change, not how expensive stuff is!
I feel whatever you put in your space that makes you happy and feel good. Do it and don’t care what anyone thinks.
I like that, and I find it to be fundamentally different than “we poop here” in the bathroom. Haha.
Good for you. It was probably difficult and scary to get out of that marriage. Keep that initial, baby.
Good for you!! I'm glad you're safe and strong. But I don't think an initial is the same thing at all!
I hope you include a section in your next design ick video about ugly, oversized chairs in your room.

It would be wonderful to have information and inspiration on how to design and style with plants, because there isn't much out there beyond the very basics of "group them together and display them at different heights."
Also I've been growing plants in the same home for almost 28 years and I don't have any mold issues! Maybe if your climate is already super humid or you're watering your houseplants with a hose or something, I dunno.
Its great for your health amd mental health!
Quit making excuses
OMG I thought I was the only one who hated the geometric wall crap lol
I’m so glad I’ve cultivated the right followers that agree! Haha
@@mrphoenixgrey what is that on the wall behind you? Even though it's painted dark, I can see it. Wasn't quite sure what that was. Since we are giving opinions, I am not a fan of all the darkness of your background. I understand it's more masculine but I want things lighter.

They feel extremely 2010s to me.
Please do a video on design fatique. It is something I am afraid of, I'd like to know more.
Do you think they would have a pet?? No, they're too perfect for that
I never really thought of it that way but yes, I agree.
Whew escaped this list…. I do brag about all my thrift store & FB Marketplace items!! Proud of these 😊
Ditto and ditto!! 🤣
Paint them, paint them today.
Tint them with a ,,Lazure" in any brown You like......and If You do it Yourself, and it get s a bit cloudy....it s ,,antique"! Every shade of Brown is better, than Grey or Orange!
I think many colors go with gray...Pink green blue red burgundy aqua/turquoise etc
I still love grey floors. Try pairing them with a taupe color
I can't help you with your gray floors, but I can help you with your grammar. The phrase you're looking for is "make do". A lot of people mistake it as "due" instead, and some even have coherent reasons for thinking this, but it's "do".
You forgot barn doors. 🤢
😂awe boo!!! 😅
You are 100% correct for every trend you mentioned. I am literally triggered when I enter a home with word signs.
All the money in the world can't buy good taste.
Same goes for purses. The more expensive they get, the uglier they get. And people actually buy that crap because it's 'designer'. No, it's ugly!
Not liking curtains because you don't like the photos you showed us is like not liking lingerie because you saw a Victoria's secret show that had the wings and everything. I know I'm writing this to a gay man, but still. Simple curtains look awesome and are very practical
I have floor to ceiling yellow-gold, velvet curtains in my living room and they are gorgeous. Took me years to find the right ones (I could afford).
Bravo!

Thought piece~ Switch all the signs around in all the rooms. Kitchen in the Garage, Bathroom in the Bedroom. Mess with People’s Tiny Miiiiiiiinnds!

I think he saying is - if you sprinkle when you tinkle, please be neat and wipe the seat.
I've seen this,in marker,in the factory bathroom that I work in
To be fair, I _might_ consider a sign that says “If you sprinkle when you tinkle… don’t be a disgusting POS. Clean up after yourself, you animal.”
That one’s actually cool 😂
The one time I saw a decal that really worked was a friend of mine with a very tiny flat. She wanted an antique hat stand for her coats, but didn’t have the space. So she got a decal of one, and screwed a trio of hangers in to made a shadow hat stand. But it was very subtle, like a couple of shades darker than her wall colour, and was in a deliberately kitsch, maximalist space. I’m not sure it would have worked anywhere else.
That actually sounds kind of cute.
@@catmip EXTREMELY cute, and creative.
I can see that!

Use what you like. That sounds like a great way to decorate a kid's room with easy-to-update themes. It's a lot easier to change that than wallpaper! Would you rather your kid have a comfortable room that is theirs, or something from a home magazine? Disagree about grey, I still love it but I agree with everything else. Grey does take some careful planning though.
Grey is an okay backdrop. I bought a home with grey tub, sink and toilet. I bought red towels and bathmat and had lots of compliments.
The problem was that the appliances were gold or avocado. These lasted a long time and were too expensive to replace when they still worked.

I love your rant on bragging & gloating! Yes!!
Love that you unapologetically speak your truth.
Plant person here. I have over 200. My space could be included in your examples of what not to do 😂
Because there are so many examples of overwhelmingly planty spaces, I think people assume we all have the same approach to incorporating plants into our homes.
It’s ‘opinion’. Truth isn’t specific to the individual. Truth is an absolute concept.
Honestly, you are THE best interior designer!
I thank you when you remind me of the dust collector decor. You always make perfect sense.
All beige is as boring as all grey, too
I agree with you 10000% on the bragging about how much it cost. Give me a break, I make medium income, have a modestly furnished home and don't need to hear everything you bought that I couldn't possibly afford or even want in my house! Thank you for pointing it out!
Yeah, do another one of these and also the hard passes. This was great!
My bathroom is grey. In my defence I rent so didn’t choose it. The North of the UK has endless grey weather too . Why bring the outside in, when the outside is mainly awful.
Put plants in there..😂😂😂 just don’t go crazy like he said…
And the damn barn doors! Where we bought our home every home for sale had those damn doors. 😩
For 10 years we had beige 🤬 the decorator who decided this was the colour of the 2010,s needs to bow their head in shame
I’m a 75 year young lady!! I agree with everything you said? What color would you replace gray with?
A warm white
A creamy warm white, not too yellow
Automatic subscribed, I never laughed so much with a interior design video. Plus your point of people always talking about how much things cost, talk about bad taste! Should definitely go first on the list lol
NOT giving up my "laundry" sticker on the door to the laundry room but I love your takedown of all this shit.
Dear Design Daddy - You are not wrong for anything stated in this video. I support and co-sign all things stated as icks. 😊
You are so amazing Phoenix. 😂😂😂. I wish I could afford you as an interior designer. Definitely would support your business. Always, look forward to seeing your content / videos. Stay beautiful. ❤
That means a lot thank you! Just by watching my videos and being a subscriber you’re supporting me 🤍
lol! I had many of these designs in the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. Now, simplistic and some type of minimalist works for me.
Design fatigue, that's something I ve never heard of, please do a video about it!! Thank you for another interesting and useful video!
Design icks:
"I do not want them in my space!
I do not like them any place!
I won't support your lack of style,
it will not make me want to smile!"
I hate the geometric wall 😂 I prefer the old crown molding
Agree on everything and thanks for talking about the gray.
p.s. And now, they even name their children *Grey* . I mean, if you hate your child, just give him/her to adoption!
Grayson, Greyson - popular names these days so a little better. (Also Mason, Jayson - "son" names.)
@@AnitaMRoberts-xh4de I never had a Greyson/Grayson yet. But Mason (all of them were little rascals), Jackson/Jaxson etc., Jason and Jayson, yes.
All i ever think is "why?" Then "achoo."
Also, thanks for adding "....and if you like it, you shouldn't!"

Cheaply.
Yes please! Video for design fatigue.
I could watch Daddy trounce bad design all day 😍
OMG!! The word art!!
I worked retail, in a store with a large housewares department, during the Live, Laugh, Live heyday. I had to grit my teeth every time I sold one to someone who went on and on about how cute/inspirational/touching it was. 🤮🤮
If I ever walked into a friend's home, and they had those Grind, Hustle, Execution, pictures on the wall, the friendship would be over!!
Will you PLEASE review Trixie matels home and or the Trixie Motel !!!?
Yes, do a 'Design Fatigue' video! this is the first I've heard of it.
I never did, (not having a place for it) but once upon a time I was considering making a word art that went, "Die, Cry, Despise" . . .
😂
I like that! Especially if you're grunge or decorate in Dark Academia maximalist. It could work
Thank you for your video. I also don't like grey (too much grey) and you are right that if you leave in Canada where the sky is grey for at least 6 months then grey is no no. I also despised influencers who brag how much they paid for some items. I don't talk about money I just enjoy having them. Have a great day.
One exception for words. I have a meaningful poem displayed and framed on my wall.
I never really did understand the geometric walls. I don’t understand the appeal.
