My only thing about clear storage is that it’s very neurodivergent friendly. Now, I will say that as someone with ADHD I do have most of my storage hidden in cupboards/closets/other closed storage, but within those units I try to keep everything as visible as possible because otherwise I just literally forget it exists.
for sanitary reasons as well. I have several clear plastic totes in my kitchen cupboards to keep food in. Everything is separated into its own "kind" - rice in one, sugars in another, etc - and can be pulled out as needed, with everything safe from moisture, possible silverfish or worse, or just spillage and mess in the cupboard itself. But always ALWAYS behind a closed door.
I agree that open & clear storage can be helpful in a neurodivergent household. We use our small deep pantry for appliances storage and use the Ikea Ivar system as an open storage pantry after we had an infestation of pantry moths with in the first year of livingin our current house. We have to be careful because it can look messy. To avoid the it looking too messy, we use the small Ikea wooden boxes to group items items and it helps a great deal. So I guess you could say there is a time and place for open/ clear storage. So I guess my suggestion from one neurodivergent household to another neurodivergent house would be for lots of smaller open/ clear storage for is to group into additional storage. I wish I could add a picture for an example but the best way I can explain is how putting the soap & lotion pumps in/on the same dish can make the sink space look less clutter. It does take more effort to both accommodate my A.D.D. and not trigger my O.C.D. 😅 but it is worth it once you establish a system that works for you!
I guess what I am trying to say is you are both right but with a bit more effort both issues can be addressed. I think the hardest part is having to test out what system works for you. I found that too closed off and too doesn't work for me. So grouping in slightly closed/ slightly open bins ( Ikea Knagglig). Note that before I switched our pantry over to the Ikea Ivar system I asked my friend for their opinion. They were considered about it looking too cluttered but they approved with our approach. So large bulk items (cereal, flour, sugar, ect) we use a variety of different sizes (similar style) of Tupperwareish containers with silicone seals (did that because of pantry moths) and then smaller items (snack, popcorn, instant ramen, ect) I put in the small wooden Ikea bins. I do think closed storage would look better but this is our work around. With this system we have a lot less food waste and it makes making a shopping list so much easier. Just be patient and test out different storage options to find what works for you. So think of storage like furniture in that it doesn't have to be matchy matchy but make sure they work together & don't clash.
Object permanence is a real issue. If it gets put away in a cupboard, it doesn't exist any more. And then I'm sad because I used to have this cool thing and now it's not there.
I am that cleaner, textured tile in the shower-NO, and on that note, showers that only have a waterfall shower head and no separate hand held head to rinse down the glass are a nightmare to clean 🙄
I would prefer a clip mounted handheld showerhead to a waterfall head. It also has to be long enough to rinse down the shower walls and shampoo off the dog. But there are no children in my household and I understand a handheld showerhead can be a problem around kids.
I'm 75 and have lived in lots of homes over the years. His ideas are spot on. Listen up people you don't want any of the items he listed. I always say to myself "is this easy to keep clean?" Doesn't matter what it is. If it looks dirty and you hate to clean it just looks tacky. Modern looks beautiful but most of us actually live in our homes so be selective about what stuff you want in your home. I laughed over the corner tub (yes I've had those - hated it)), those terrible short backslashes (all new built homes seem to have them) but my pet peeves are the tiny double shallow sinks in kitchens (can't fit anything in them), and putting microwave over the stove (I'm short). loved this video. I'm s fan!
Yes, it's the latest fad. I knew a women who didn't cook. She and her husband built a home with one of these over their big fancy stove/oven. It is built in a lake so they did it to make big bucks when they sell it. I had to laugh. She told me her sister used it to make spaghetti. The thing is. The sink is far away and I can't imagine dragging the pot of boiling water that far. I also hate the drawer microwave they put in.
The best thing I love about your videos I just discovered this channel today is that you tell everyone yeah it looks cool but it's a disaster to clean or it's going to rot and all sorts of maintenance stuff that nobody tells you about
clear storage is key for storing sewing supplies, all the textiles, yarn, supplies for creative stuff etc. I don't want to pull out every box to see what is inside. That being said, they 100% are hidden away in a NOT see through closet :D
The only place I disagree with the clear storage is the pantry- just because of the practicality of being able to see what food you have while keeping it organized!
Agree, but he is a designer so is for aesthetics and real people need practicality. I like his ideas but some clear storage is more practical in some situation like the pantry. I wouldn’t use them to store tampons on a countertop in the bathroom though lol.
I have aphantasia and add so clear storage is a life saver for me because I don't have visual memory and it is helpful for me to be able to see bc out of sight out of mind but I just accepted I am never going to have a super chic looking place because of that but I try to keep visual clutter to a minimum its a struggle
@@Sk76547 I don’t use buns at all. I roll the product down and rubber and it with #7 file folder minsters.. the all sit side by side. I don’t like putting unused (or yet used) pastas in containers. If I want to donate some pasta, etc that are in date and I won’t use more than likely, they have to be in their unsealed boxes. I buy cereal *heritage Flakes with 4 kinds of grains..point is I eat them.a pantry becomes a forever Hime to some items..like a starving chipmunk..lol. Then u open a pretty container and you can cook expired stuff that is barely edible…if not decanted, you can look in your pantry and donate to those who will be really needing that extra big of X. Yes weird. But works
I don't like free standing tubs in the middle of the room. My mom's bathroom is bigger than my living room with a tub in the middle and I hate it. It seems like a waste of space and it only gets used like 6 times a year.
Remember those sinks from the 1930's that had the built in porcelain drain boards on one or both ends? I went back to one of those in my renovation, I have the drain board on each end and I wouldn't trade it for the world now, it is so convenient, I can wash and put dishes on one side while cooking and still have washed fruits/veggies on the other, no more trying to find a spot to drain something washed without water draining everywhere, and my sink is larger than a farm sink.
Ultramodern has the warmth of a Soviet gulag. A textured rock for a bathroom gives that lovely outdoor bathroom feel, but all I can think of is all the mineral deposits and dust it makes my head ache. My ideal kitchen and bathroom have smooth tile with a floor drain for fast and easy cleaning. The corner tub - my bathroom at my parent's house was tight and a corner tub actually worked. There was no extra wasted space, for that layout it worked. I am 6' and the corner tub (plain soaking) was wonderful, but it was oblong and had a corner seat most of the way up the wall of the tub - not the triangle shape. It was one of the few tubs my 6'4" husband and I could both fit in (bit snug but we fit). So I would say a corner tub with an oblong design works if it works with the bathroom layout.
Wanted to hate something you said but couldn’t. lol. You were right on point. On a personal observation, I am so over the whole open floor plan concept. Who likes to kick back and relax and look over to see dirty dishes in the sink. Sometimes you just can’t help it. Plus I don’t always feel the need to be around others. I’m happy for some alone time occasionally.
Finally! A designer who acknowledges the importance of utilization, shuns this farmhouse “sheeple” mentality, and discourages clear storage. I am most definitely subscribing because you are a tall, overdue drink of cool water!
I agree completely. I just came upon this channel today, watched several videos, and I'm also subscribing. I want my home to look great, but I need it to be easy to clean too.
I really wouldn't mind having clear storage containers in a walk-in closet. That way, I can save a lot of time looking for things in drawers or other types of non-see through storage options. In summer, I like to put my woolens in airtight containers with cedar chips to keep moths away. Since I don't have see-through containers, I wind up storing everything in black plastic bags in the basement. 😝
Ceder chest. I have one in my closet and store my sweaters in it. That's what they're for. Most of them have a cushion on top so they can be out in the open and used as seating. They come in a variety of sizes to fit almost any space.
My home is kind of a blend of European farmhouse, French country, and English cottage with even some touches of academia and gothic… it’s super beautiful and classy and upscale, but still rustic and homey and filled with vintage and antique one of a kind finds etc. I also love textures so I have stone and woods mixed with fluffy pillows and soft blankets mixed with metallic gold, copper, and wrought iron, mixed with well placed plants and flowers, etc. I love mixing old and new and having things in my home that have a history and a story to tell. I also love feeling kind of connected to my Italian roots in my decor. It’s home. ☺️
All spot on! Add to your list: pot fillers over stove. Our neighbor had one installed in his brand new house... and it sprang a leak and flooded his whole first floor with 2" of water.
My husband is also tall, 6'5". We are continuing to build on our forever home. The one thing he insisted on having is 40" tall countertops. We're cajun, so we both love to cook a lot!! It will be better for his back.
I’m a first time watcher. So far I’m agreeing with everything you’ve said. Thank you. I like practical and easy. As I get older, cleaning is harder and by now, it’s still not my favorite chore.
I was out of home at 15 and have always kept my home tidy but have never been a clean freak. I hated doing dishes. Then, all of a sudden at 47, I love doing the dishes! Took 32 years but it happened! Lol. The funny bit is I have a cleaner who comes once a week because I am disabled. She does a great job through out the house but I noticed the dishes and cutlery were often still grimey after she had cleaned. It's hard finding a good cleaner, so rather than risk losing her, I just pull up a seat, put a podcast on, and get the dishes done at a leisurely pace the evening before she comes to clean. Gives her more time to do other tasks and it saves me having to redo the dishes after she's done them. I suspect people who have dishwashers forget you have to really pay attention to what your doing when washing by hand. Anyways, my new love is dishes! Lol
I live in Florida and a neighbor just painted their house black to go with their new black shingled roof. I couldn't believe my eyes. I'd hate to have their electric bill!!
😮yes!! exterior colors are a huge factor when considering sunlight absorption/ reflection. I also believe that they make regret their paint color choice.
Have you seen the white cube someone put coming off the highway in Miami headed toward the beach? Modern house people are just ruining Miami one bad design at a time 😂
I live in the country in NC and the neighbors across the street from me took this adorable yellow house and painted it black (a black with an undertone of army green, it's a weird ugly color), black roof, black window frames and added modern details. It's awful and definitely doesn't fit in. I do see them power washing the house a lot 😅
Omg…you just provided a visual of water fights from a ceiling faucet that’s going to give me nightmares! My twin pre teen sons still haven’t learned to always get it in the toilet….. I can’t imagine where water would wind up with an even longer “wand” extending from the ceiling spraying liquid everywhere. 😂😂😂 It would be a horror show! 😂😂😂
I was 7 when I stood up to get out of the tub and bumped the glass shelf, a sheet of glass laying on two brackets. Cut my foot, 4 stitches. Still have the scare 60 years later. If you are going to have glass shelves ANY where, don't have children.
I have two in my guest bathroom over the toilet, they are quite secure but I don't have children, just dogs. When I had kids living in my home I didn't have any kind of glass in the bathroom for just the reason you mention. I had plastic or paper cups and a basket for soap dishes. Now that I live with 3 dogs I think it's safe 😄
I have ADHD and clear storages drive me crazy 😆 There's too much information at once, too many colors, clutter, and talking about cleaning these things and traces of dust everywhere! Super video 🇨🇦💛
I agree with everything you said. I have a free standing tub and I hate it. It was gorgeous when I put it in, but cleaning around it is a nightmare. I can't wait to rip it out.
My cabinets are all solid wood w a hard sealer, all custom made. I’ve never had water drip down the front of my stone apron sink. I can wash commercial baking pans in it. So love it, happy happy
I always wondered how the flies and bugs got into the boob lights, too! We bought a builder grade home and we had a bunch of them. First thing I started doing was changing the light fixtures. I hadn't found my style yet (I guess I STILL haven't). But I definitely prefer all the different style light fixtures I have over the boob lights
My contractor gave me closed LED lights. I hate those too. I call them space ship lights. They do give off nice light though. I opted for a slight yellow glow. I'll replacing them one by one, but I haven't a clue on what I want. so they stay for a while longer. Too many other things to consider right now.
I grew up in an old Farmhouse. I remember always having a rug or a large Towel in front of the sink as we made dinner and washed dishes. Water everywhere. Luckily we didn’t have any cabinets under it. It had a curtain thing that my Mom would remove once a week and wash. Love your show.
Hanging water faucets = running a hose through the window - I'm old, had to do it when I was young and broke and "stole" neighbor water. It's the first thing I though of when I saw the pictures of hanging water faucts!
I hate jetted tubs. You can never properly clean them, and they smell from water trapped. Yuck, used to have brand new one in luxury apartment, always took a shower. As I live in an older home with a big old fashioned tub it is great for grandkids and washing dogs!
Nope. There's gonna be bacteria. It's just plain biology. Dead skin cells plus natural bodily oils plus moisture equals bacteria! Add soap film to that and it becomes the perfect place for things to breed. As much as I love the thought of a jetted massaging bath, the reality of it just grosses me out. It doesn't matter how meticulously clean you are either (which most people are NOT), because there's always going to be some area that you cannot access to clean.
@@nannem9716 You missed the "filters and sanitisers" part. The sanitisers will kill the bacteria. The filters will remove them, along with the dead skin cells and other contaminants. If the water coming out of your jets isn't as clean as or cleaner than the water coming out of the tap, you need to check your filters. Even the self-flushing ones need routine maintenance!
@@iriswaldenburger2315 That's not quite the problem - even if your tub is perfectly clean before you get in, if you don't have filters and sanitisers built in to the jet system it's going to be pumping soup by the end of your soak. Cleaning it perfectly after every use is not the whole solution - and would be a lot of work and take the joy out of the soak.
Normally I don’t agree with lots of your advice but this video is on point with newly everything imho. My only disagreement is with clear storage bins. If you have them on display and are relying on them to add to your space, I agree you will be frustrated that can’t maintain that picture perfect look at all times but if I can’t see what I have, I will rebuy and end up with items to return or declutter. I also don’t keep them out on display. Lastly, your ad placement is, chef’s kiss
I hate boob lights too, but would love to see some recommendations for replacements. I know that is very dependent on the rest of the space, but a good starting off point for a style of light would be very helpful. More broadly, I'd love to see a video in the style of "pick this, not that." I don't know if you have one yet, since i just found and started binging your channel today, but it would be great for a future video, too.
In regards to a shower shelving alternative to schluter, RB3 makes a stainless steel shower niche shelf that has long horizontal cut outs for drainage and hanging face cloths etc and is installed with a small gap in the back to prevent water from collecting against the tile/grout. I just used a set of four for a long vertical niche and they look and perform wonderfully, and, bonus, they’re significantly more affordable per shelf than Schluter.
I love the ones you buy on a pole. They have tons of room, all sorts of hooks for wash clothes. My contractor wanted to install thos in my shower and nope. I have loads of products so my pole works for me.
I agree with you. I love black as a design color. Painted my fireplace black, never regretted it. Bedroom walls are black, accents bright white. Love it. Painted my gallery kitchen black. And I well understand OCD. Keep posting. You have awesome taste.
I liked the last one where you give an alternative that works better. I would like to see more of your ideas about alternatives to the things that don't work or you don't like.
I keep my acrylic storage closed but I love it- I can find any jewelry, shoes or shirts that I had from dinosaur years and would not use if I didn’t see them.😂😂😂
I have personal negative experience with the boob lights. My family moved after a natural disaster screwed up everything and our new home was 2 stories. Kitchen, living room, utility stuff, half bath downstairs, and two bedrooms with private full baths upstairs. The stairs were a straight shot along an exterior wall. And when you reached the top, one bedroom was right there, and the other was at the end of the hallway doubling back next to the stairs. This middle section was illuminated by one boob light. Directly over the banister that separated the walkeay and the stairs down. So when the bulbs died before we even signed the deed, i was tasked with changing the bulbs, and unholy mother of sin DO NOT INSTALL THESE THINGS ABOVE STAIRS because that was traumatizing! I was the only one tall enough to reach the boob light nipple and I had to change two bulbs while standing on a step ladder as my mother held my belt so I didnt fall over the banister and down the stairs. Sconces would have made this home a thoudand times better and safer. Boob lights are pure evil.
I love clear storage in rhe kitchen and bathroom *behind the cabinet doors* 😅 I have adhd / struggle with organization, and see ing things help. But-- it's got to be hidden or it triggers anxiety 😅 New subber!
Onemore thing about the farmhouse kitchen sink. I find they are usually installed will below the countertop height.the linear horizontal line is broken and most egregiously, they are back breakingly low for anyone of normal adult height to wash dishes while maintaining an upright posture. My back hurts just looking at them.
I have a soapstone FARMHOUSE sink and LOVE it, and it is NOT on a 36"base cabinet. I had it custom made to fit the 30 inch base cabinet, and having it "protrude" one inch actually HELPS protect my cabinetry, because the water drips do not curl under the sink to curve back to hit a cabinet! Plus I have virtually no water dripping over the edge, it is too far from the faucet and it is not hard to keep washing inside the sink perimeter. Plus we installed wood cabinet doors (and plywood boxes, no MDF), but the cabinet under my sink is the most pristine cabinet because it is PROTECTED by the sink. The sink is deep and nearly square and fits everything I want to wash. Yes to keep it looking great and free of scum on a darker surface, I soap-sponge it clean most days, but shouldn't we clean our sink more often? Takes one minute and looks fantastic. And I get to clean over a living surface (because I consider stone to be living). It is divine! And there are stock smaller farmhouse sinks, no need to go custom. It is the best sink I've ever used, and I have a lifetime of being the family dishwasher in countless kitchens.
I can’t give up on the farmhouse sink😩😩 I love them. Mine does have the lip so no issues👍🏾 I also clean my shower like that😂 how else are you going to get it nice and sparkly. 😁
lol I hadn't think about black exteriors being so impractical. I was actually thinking about it when we remodel our house, but we live in Santiago, Chile, which is super dusty during the dry season!😅
This point is the only one I question. I’m on my 3rd home with a farmhouse sink and I have never had issues with water coming over the lip. Never! I’ve done dishes, including big pots or slow cookers. I’ve washed my mid and small sized dogs in them. You might see a drip or two as you are cleaning up, but nothing that would ruin cabinets. I guess I would ask…how messy are you? Do you clean up after yourself? When I do anything significant at the sink I always take my sink cloth and make sure there’s no sitting water at the back by the faucet or along the sides. I’ll run the cloth along the sink front whether it’s a standard sink set up or a farmhouse sink. If the odd time a bit of water got over the lip you’d notice. I just didn’t get this point at all.
I’ve never filled my farmhouse sink so have never had potential for spillover. The beauty of having one is they are so deep that any water gets contained within when washing dishes. Know one fills sinks with water & cleans dishes anyway ….. that’s just gross. Run water, clean with dishwand then rinse.
How do you supposed to live in those ultramodern, cold, sterile homes? And one thing, i personally would never include in my home, is open shelves in the kitchen. I just don't get the purpose of them, exept for looks, but big no to me. Just thinking all the dust and kitchen grease they collecting.
I was going top get just a one sink stainless the big kind. but you need far too much water to do a few dishes. I stayed with my contractors sinks, under-mount and they are deeper than my old ones. I love them. I haven't used my dishwasher yet. I'm just one. Far easier to wash as you go. Plumber said to use it at least once in a while or the seals will become brittle. Good advice.
Good advice and practical. Not too much black. Accents and definitions for black. That being said, I have a black velvet sofa. It’s the main focal point in the room. I need help making it look inviting. ❤. I just swapped out the boob lights in my home 2 yrs ago. I still have some in the walk in closets. 😂
I had a corner tub when my kids were little and they loved it. Even though it was winter so many months of the year, when friends came to play (preschool age), I would tell the mom to bring a suit and I'd put a little dishsoap in the water and they would play in the bathtub for literally hours hours. I did hate the jets and never used them, they would release some kind of dried scum into the water, I felt like I was sitting in filth. I could never figure out how to get them truly clean without filling the tub several times and running clear water through them over and over. It was there when we bought the house. I wouldn't ever pay to have one installed, but we did manage to get hours of use out of it.
Omg the noon light! Ugh. In the house we rented , there was 4! 4 noon lights in the hallway/ bonus room area. Omg I hated them. All these lights and switches for a small room! The lights were like a foot apart! Omg never again now that I own my own home
The best part of Sunday mornings is a new DD video 😊 Crowdsourcing opinions here: i live in Montana, so an all-black exterior on the house really wouldn't work here. But one thing i've always loved is a black roof. They look so sharp and beautiful, but they might not be so great from a practical standpoint; i'd love to hear from folks who have one. Thank you. Thanks for another great vid, DD 🙂
DD mentioned that if you have good insulation it would be ok. Maybe google how contractors designers do this so the house is not hot. Good Luck🍀. A black roof goes with everything. I see them around so maybe they are being designed so they don’t make the house hot.
I have some clear storage drawers IN my closet. So I have an 8 foot long closet with two sliding doors. Open the door and along with the standard rod, I have some clear drawers with accessories. It works.
I agree about the short backsplash but with some expections. I have a short backsplash in recently renovated kitchen. I chose it because i love stainless steel countertops but putting more stainless steel on the backsplash would be too much steel for me. So a short backplash (in steel) gives a sleek and finished look to the counters without too much steel. Also I don't have any upper cabinets so it doesn't look like there's missing backsplash between counter and uppers.
All that corner dead space behind the tub, is used for a humid dust bunny habitat on a mat of towel fluff. Standing in the tub and trying to reach down to the floor/baseboards 😢 A mop won't fit
How can you have a higher backsplash when a sink is under a window, as per the photo? In the UK we call the low length of quartz/marble etc on the wall an "upstand". I rather like them, though I do live alone and am very tidy...😂
I have to agree with you when it comes to the clear storage. I never understand why people would want to have everything exposed. I call it visual vomit 🤮 I am also a designer and I do videos here on RUclips as well and that’s one of the things I have talked about in the past. I also hate the ceiling faucet. I think it looks stupid and I’m glad you pointed out putting in a lip for the farmhouse sinks because they are beautiful, but they will ruin your cabinets as you said so people need to order an extra set of doors or at least put in that extra lip and I agree with you. I hate the boob light. It is so ugly.
Use black on the exterior, but mix it with stained wood. The shade is important too - I like SW Black Fox but some would say it's not black enough. You get my point. Black/Wood/Glass maybe a little stone accent and it's fine!!
I will tell you how the bugs get in the boob lights. The birds drill out the screens covering the round hole ventilation in the attic, or the screens rust. The bugs come in the attic and down through the electrical holes. That is one way. The other ways…well, you gotta look at your sliders and screens, etc.
I like two sinks. I like undermount sinks but I have regular steel sinks and faux marble counters. I like two sinks. The farmhouse sink isn't divided. I don't like them for practicality. They look nice.
I really appreciate the comments about cleaning some of these things. (Also in hearing someone other than myself say, ' well that's stupid' about them.) I really appreciate the comments about the farmhouse sinks - I really want to get one, one of these days, and knowing about the lip underneath is a great point to remember. I like not just the size and functionality of them, but I feel it would be so much easier on my lower back. Only people who have actually washed dishes by hand (or who have a tweaky lower back - I attest to both) will truly appreciate that.
Opening commercial for handcrafted Amish furniture was brilliant. I will sit through a good appropriate ad if it relates to what I'm watching. What I enjoy about your videos is your non judgmental attitude even with that which you dislike because you are aware of the time and effort some projects take. What I take away mostly is what could potentially affect the value or resale of property. I have my taste which I want to enjoy amidst my surroundings but these are objects and furniture that are portable. The structure of my environment is very carefully considered before I decide to get creative with an eye towards my heirs and how they will dispose of (or hold onto) what was once mine. I'm old now. Let's be realistic and practical.
I like that someone is finally distinguishing between “storage” and “display”. I “display” interesting, beautiful, quirky, or cherished possessions. I “store” shoes, bags, household linen when they are not in use. My shoes and bags are on display when I’m wearing them. My linen is on display when it’s on the bed or hanging on a towel rail. When these things are not fulfilling their function, I don’t want to see them. Clear containers are convenient for many purposes, especially in the pantry or craft storage, but they need to kept behind solid doors.
Actualy it is not cleaning nightmare to clean textured stone tiles in shower. You need just vinegar and steam cleaner. :) 5 mins and you are good. I have it for 13 years. Still prestine.
So true about the Butler sink in kitchen. We have one and the cupboard underneath, the paint has blown. Years ago they were put on brick columns, probably better idea really.🕊️x
I dont know what you do in the US, but in the UK the farmhouse sinks (we call them butcher sinks) don't hang over. And i have a "boob light" in the bathroom which must have been there for 20 years (before i started living here) and no dead flies in it and the reason i haven't changed it, is because it strangely gives a really flattering light. Likely because of the bulb, but thats 16 years old now.....
About the farmhouse sinks. Some of the problems are there no matter what style of sink you have. As someone who had a normal kitchen sink growing up. We spilled water down on the under cabinets so many times. And the boob lights......I've hated them for years. They are so weird and ugly.
I don't know why you popped up in my feed, but after watching your video, I HAD to hit subscribe! As a certified germaphobe and a professional kitchen & bath designer, I think we must have been separated at birth. I completely agree with you and have ranted on these exact topics myself (though I am going with an almost black exterior on my home). Thank God that someone else finally had the guts to dis farmhouse! When did we all decide that we needed to live on a farm?! Or "at the beach" with jars of sand and sea shells, and sea weed and driftwood and ropey accents, and lighthouse sculptures scattered about our homes??? I just can't! And Oh yes, textured tile is a cleaning nightmare! And all jetted tubs are a bacteria frappe no matter how clean you think your bathtub might be! Maybe you already covered this in another video but let's also put an end to word art ("Live, Laugh, Love" etc - UGH!), dusty potpourri, and kitchens and bathrooms with all open shelving. I'm going to binge your other videos now. Wonderful to see a great designer who actually "gets it"!
I watched the home edit and was inspired to get acrylic organizers. The more you stack them the more cluttered they look but I will say they came out with bins to go inside of those bins so now I can organize them a little better but it does look pretty cluttered. I would never advise using these out in the open and only use it in spaces where it makes sense like in my pantry, if I can’t see the food I honestly don’t know what’s there. But I would prefer in my bathroom for it to not be see through since there is so much inventory and the bins are stacked whereas in my pantry they are all on separate shelves. I think when it is stacked that’s really when it can feel overwhelming.
I agree with everything you said. I cringed when you talked about the huge bathroom tube on a diagonal. I have one of those. The space is not large and it just makes it feel claustrophobic. Such a waste of space and I often think about getting it pulled out of there and replacing it with something functional! I don't even take baths and there is a huge shower that I use every day. Why do they do these totally impractical things?
Because it wasn't designed specifically for you. It was designed for the average buyer or the people there before you. Most people, especially women, want a tub.
You and Nick Lewis need to do a collab. The sass and snark would be off the charts, and would make for a hialrious video!
Oh god. That would be a friggin hoot!
THIS
Haha. Bonding over a mutual hatred of word 'art'.
I just finished watching one of Nick's videos and this one was recommended and about 30 seconds in, this was exactly my same thought😂😂😂
Oh my god!! I just came to the comments to say the same thing!! I would pay to see that video. 😂😂😂
My only thing about clear storage is that it’s very neurodivergent friendly. Now, I will say that as someone with ADHD I do have most of my storage hidden in cupboards/closets/other closed storage, but within those units I try to keep everything as visible as possible because otherwise I just literally forget it exists.
This is also true, these clear containers are great for inside hidden storage to keep it organized :)
for sanitary reasons as well.
I have never seen a ceiling faucet(I need to get out more!) my kitty would be working that hanging faucet like a stripper pole 😅
Hahaha! I mean I would pay to see that 🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
So true! I'm conjuring a mental image... 😅
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
😂❤😂
I'm s fan!
The ceiling faucets look like restaurant dish washing area for pots.
They try to incorporate restaurant features in homes that are not practical there. They should be left at the restaurant, where it will be useful.
That's what I thought of, too.
Or something out of aliens.
The best thing I love about your videos I just discovered this channel today is that you tell everyone yeah it looks cool but it's a disaster to clean or it's going to rot and all sorts of maintenance stuff that nobody tells you about
I think ultra modern can work very nicely in certain spaces. Like the secret lair of a super villain, or... Nope, really just a villain lair.
OMG, what! Ceiling faucets!!! Get out! I didn't even know they existed! No, just NO!
Same. I feel like that aesthetic is way out of my income bracket. 😅
clear storage is key for storing sewing supplies, all the textiles, yarn, supplies for creative stuff etc. I don't want to pull out every box to see what is inside. That being said, they 100% are hidden away in a NOT see through closet :D
The only place I disagree with the clear storage is the pantry- just because of the practicality of being able to see what food you have while keeping it organized!
I was going to say the same. I had some containers that weren't clear and it was so impractical.
The other con unfortunately about any dark exterior is that it fades faster and uneven based on sun direction
See through storage is perfect inside hidden storage.
I really love and appreciate this is mostly about designing practical not just aesthetically. We don’t live in an Instagram picture lol.
This exactly. 🎯
OMG, YES!!!!!!
It’s a great for families with kids
That's a good point because there is no place to catch the water. Sinks and tubs all have drains
I lived in the city and my rental boob light had a ton of bugs in it. It’s just something about this light that says “hey bugs come live in me”
My husband is also tall, 6'5". We are continuing to build on our forever home. The one thing he insisted on having is 40" tall countertops. We're cajun, so we both love to cook a lot!! It will be better for his back.
I can really appreciate that you talk about cleaning these designs. It is something I always wonder about and other designers dont mention ❤
Minnesota yah, Florida, no way dude!
Oh what a bad idea!
😮yes!! exterior colors are a huge factor when considering sunlight absorption/ reflection.
My kids would love that ceiling faucet. It's perfect for water fights!
Can clean the whole house down in one go 🤣
Omg…you just provided a visual of water fights from a ceiling faucet that’s going to give me nightmares! My twin pre teen sons still haven’t learned to always get it in the toilet….. I can’t imagine where water would wind up with an even longer “wand” extending from the ceiling spraying liquid everywhere. 😂😂😂 It would be a horror show! 😂😂😂
How do you wash your face with those things?
@@lauram1208 I like dogs and cats better then children.
You’re by far the most practical interior designer!
I love that you place practicality over looks, yes some of these look nice but the bigger picture is what is important
“My OCD ass.” I spit my iced tea out laughing and immediately subscribed.
"it's one big stick coming down in front of your face" 5:17 "I don't want a big post in front of my face" 5:23 ....Love the double entendres
😂😅😂
If your jet tub's plumbing is making soup, it's plumbed wrong. There should be filters and sanitisers in there to keep it hygienic.
People don’t understand that cleaning is a thing
Ultra modern design and decor is just so cold.
I keep my acrylic storage closed but I love it- I can find any jewelry, shoes or shirts that I had from dinosaur years and would not use if I didn’t see them.😂😂😂
He is talking about having these on display, not the point.
@@rockshot100no he said anywhere lol
I love my freestanding tub at an angle, it’s 71 inches long and it’s beautiful! I do have a planter behind it!😊
I have personal negative experience with the boob lights.
I love watching your videos because it just confirms that I'm designing correctly.
Imagine having a ceiling faucet on top of your Kim Kardhasian's zero depth sink 😉
"motherfucking spaceship" 😂😂😂
While watching this video I fell in love with the back drop color, it looked like a sueded brown. And now the wheels are turning.
Tubs between vanities too.
Those skirted sinks also are lower. If you’re taller they ruin your back!
lol I hadn't think about black exteriors being so impractical. I was actually thinking about it when we remodel our house, but we live in Santiago, Chile, which is super dusty during the dry season!😅
Thank you for talking about the farmhouse sink. I didn't even think about water dripping over! 😮 I was blinded by the aesthetics.
@@topscot78 Yeah me either. It never happens to me ever.
Don't forget them da*n flies that sneak in somehow. It grosses me out seeing dishes exposed.
I was thinking of getting imperfect times for the bathroom. Thank you for saving my pocket. 😅
Wow, thanks for the info on the farm-house sink. I have been lusting after one of these, but now I am reconsidering!
This was so practical, not just a subjective “not my taste” video. Thank you!
I absolutely love how PRACTICAL you are!!!! Well done!
Summer Montanian we have a metal roof òn our place. Last summer under fire threat so a metal roof is good for us
Black roofs are popular where I am. I do know you can get a solar reflective roof paint to reduce the heat besides extra insulation.
@@KatieB33 Thank you. That's definitely something to think about.
@@youbetcha108 Thank you. i think black roofs are just so beautiful, i would love to have one if it doesn't turn the house into an oven 🦃🔥😂
I have some clear storage drawers IN my closet. So I have an 8 foot long closet with two sliding doors. Open the door and along with the standard rod, I have some clear drawers with accessories. It works.
I’m on my third custom kitchen with Farmhouse Sinks. I LOVE them!
You’re right on this! Great and practical info for your listeners. Carol from California
Farmhouse sinks have a lip under neath to protect my cabinets? Awesome😊
What kind of lip do you mean should be installed under the farmhouse sink? What material?
7:33 all black in the summer heat is my worst nightmare. Heat absorber.
I agree with all of your criticisms except perhaps the clear storage boxes…I think they could be useful kept behind a closet door. 🙂
All that corner dead space behind the tub, is used for a humid dust bunny habitat on a mat of towel fluff.
Standing in the tub and trying to reach down to the floor/baseboards 😢 A mop won't fit
I just found your channel and I really enjoy watching you because you explain why you think something doesn't fit. I love hearing your explanation.
You did such a nice job slipping that ad for squarespace in, I never even noticed that it was an ad!!
Awe thank you! We had to make it clever, I’m not a fan of abrupt stops for an at, so why not have some fun with it 🤍
How can you have a higher backsplash when a sink is under a window, as per the photo?
I stumbled across your channel and you are absolutely correct on everything you said. I feel bad for so many people with no taste at all.
Use black on the exterior, but mix it with stained wood. The shade is important too - I like SW Black Fox but some would say it's not black enough. You get my point. Black/Wood/Glass maybe a little stone accent and it's fine!!
The blue on those kitchen cabinets. Is stunning.
I will tell you how the bugs get in the boob lights. The birds drill out the screens covering the round hole ventilation in the attic, or the screens rust. The bugs come in the attic and down through the electrical holes. That is one way. The other ways…well, you gotta look at your sliders and screens, etc.
I appreciate how willing you are to show us the things we need to know. ❤
I never seen a ceiling faucet before. I'll pas on that.
I have a jacuzzi tub. It's a monolith in the bathroom that's in the way. I never use it. I want to take it out, but it will be a major job.
1:15 oh good, I won’t be called jealous as much for thinking this looks bad now that it’s on the out 😅😅😂😂
I agree with everything you said.
