Im happy to see Sony going after the competition (Samyang 12mm f2 and Sigma 16mm f1.4). Competition breeds innovation and we get some great new lenses!
Going after? I don't know. It's a good alternative for those with pay double the price of the sigma or four times the price of the samyang, I bet they also perform much better, but they're not really targeting the same customers. And honestly with its lack of OSS I wouldn't even pick the 10-20 over the old 10-18 if they were the same price. But... it's good that Sony is áctually designing APS-C lenses again. I just wonder if this comeback is in time to convince people they are actually not abandoning APS-C after all.
Why not shoot apsc on full frame.. videos don’t bare any negative effects and pictures only downgrade 10 megapixels on cropped mode so if you have a newer full frame it doesn’t even matter…
I bought this a few weeks ago because of your video. Even though I mainly shoot FF now, I wanted an inexpensive ultra wide lens for my secondary aps-c camera. Anyhow, on my recent beach trip, I ended up using my 6100/sony 11mm way more than my a7iii w/a sigma 70-200mm. I absolutely love this little lens. Thank you for recommending it!
That sony has started producing a6400's again after 2 years with no inventory is nice. Hopefully this means a new aps-c sensor/lcd screen/body is on the horizon. They are overdue to stop reusing parts out of the bin.
This 11mm homeboy with my veteran Sony a5000 is now my second favourite combo, close behind the a6400 with Sigma 56mm f1.4. I carry both in my camera bag all the time 🥰
After selling the Rokinon ages ago, I found I wanted it again. I just ordered another, but now I'm thinking I should have looked at Sony 11mm pre-order options. Oh well, I might try it out at some point.
Me too. I was also looking at the Rokinon 12mm but I'll wait on this new lens from Sony. $250 for the Rokinon is just so tempting. I have the Sigma 16mm 1.4 and absolutely love it but a 11mm or 12mm may be worth it for wider shots.
Sony is not only 1mm wider which is a big bonus but it is also 3rd of a stop brighter. Also not to mention it is smaller and lighter a bit. but the biggest issue of the rokinon which nobody emphasize as much as they should is its bad CA and flare control.
I'm right there with you on the 11mm. I think reliable auto focus is the key factor to buy over the Rokinon. The clarity of the Lowa 9mm is why I picked that up over the Roinon. I really need to get to a photo shop and test all these new sony lenses out before I'd choose one.
Hi, Arthur! Can you, please, compare this Sony lens with Laowa 9mm in terms of sharpness, noise and vignetting in different light situations? I've used some of extra wide lenses (Laowa, Samyang, 7Artisans), but I've never ever been satisfied with their performance completely. Maybe, Sony will be the first lens which can easily cope with all those problems?
Is this going to be the best night photography lens for Sony APSC? Would love to test it and compare to Rokinon 12mm f2.0 manual. I mean for Milky Way and Aurora autofocus is not necessary.
Now a 4k60 full width(no crop) of the sensor apsc Sony would do the perfect magic . Sony is looking the other way of making smaller and lighter lens and it looks so good for travel and pros who have to carry it all day .
You had me sold on this lens the minute you said it's a replacement to your 9mm Laowa because that's what I'm looking to replace. Just finished a real estate shoot and I think my images were way to soft. Thanks as usual Arthur!
9mm and 11mm is big difference. Laowa is plenty sharp lol, nobody will see a difference. Otherwise there is something wrong with your copy. If you are making real estate photos, especially from tripod, laowa is much better. For real estate videos i would probably take 11mm sony. The 1.8 is probably tailored to people vlogging. If you headshot vlog you might actually want the bokeh quite often. I think the usefulness of 1.8 is highly dependent on use. I do regularly videos of my talking head for presentations and speeches. If it wasn't 1.8 I wouldn't even consider it.

Hi Arthur (and internet in general). I'm a NOOOOB when it comes to camera gear. I have a small RUclips channel that focuses on mountain biking. I currently use a GoPro for both POV footage (which I'll continue to use) and selfie/vlog clips (which isn't ideal). But I'm looking to buy the Sony FX30 for three purposes: (1) hand-held outside vloging, (2) indoor office selfies (tripod) and (3) action filming people riding mountain bikes. All video, no stills. My question is about lenses. I'd like to keep my lenses down to two if possible (or could I get away with one?). My guess is one for the selfies and one for the action shooting? I like the idea of using Sony APS-C lenses. You clearly love the "E 11mm F1.8". Sounds like that would work for selfie/vlogs. Would that work for action shots? Should I get another for shooting mountain bikers (10-30 feet away)? My initial look are at: E 11mm F1.8 E 15mm F1.4 G E PZ 10-20mm F4 G Could I get away with just one of those? If not, do two stand out?
I don't know if there is plenty of light where you are planning to film mountainbikers, bit assuming that you will record some slo mo footage (at higher shutter speeds) i would definetly choose the 11mm F1.8 or the 15mm F1.4 due to their higher aperture to keep the iso as low as possible. So it is more of a question of how far away to your subject you are and how big your captured scene should be. So for more extra wide-angle i would chose the 11 mm F1.8 and for the other purposes maybe the 10-20F4 if you still need it. 💁♂️ Unfortunately the sony 10-20 is just F4 but you may also have a look at the tamron 11-20 F2.8 which is one aperture brighter as a compromise. And maybe consider a gimbal for smooth camera panning.
I don't know if I should change my LAOWA 9mm 2.8 for that Sony one and its authentic focus. I want to prioritize quality so that straight lines are not deformed.
I just bought the Laowa 9mm…… But for landscape + real estate, the 9mm (~13mm) seems to be still a big advantage for dramatic width over 11m (~16mm) albeit lack of AF which shouldn’t matter if not vlogging
@@hecjvaldez I've had my laowa 9mm for two years now and it is an excellent lens. Especially for building interiors because it is a rectilinear lens; "zero-D". paid $499 then and it is still same price!

Hi Arthur , what would be a good option for Lens for A7iv? We are taking a trip to Europe soon . I currently only have 1 lens - Sigma 24-70 f2.8. I plan to take 2-3 lens for the trip. Thanks for your suggestion
Hey Arthur, I'm a beginner in photography and am very confused on what wide or ultravide lens I should buy. I want to take large sharp photos in old european cities in small plazas, getting complete details of the paintings and sculptures from the buildings. I use an A6000. what do you recommend?
Ibis makes more sense, and maybe in 1-2 years all bodies will have ibis, they will sell this lens for next 10 years. Also it doesn’t Mattila er how much bodies have ibis, what matters is who is buying expensive sony lenses - probably (for the most part) not the people with a6000 (which is my camera btw) and a6100.
I'm sold for this one. I currently have the Samyang 12mm manual, and the Sigma 16mm, which for my purposes are a bit redundant (bought the Sigma for the AF), bulky, and weight 3x as much as the new Sony. The Samyang AF version never really convinced me, but this one surely does.
Thanks for this video and the other new Sony release lenses. I would suggest a video centric video comparing all three lenses and how they do especially on your a6100 since that camera, nor do these lens, have any stabilization. Love the new wider lenses to compensate for the 1/5 x crop of APS-c, but I would get it more for video than photo shooting (a6400), but am concerned that none of these have any stabilization.
Recently got the sigma 16mm f1.4 which gets me similar shots for much less cost, although it’s much larger than this Sony lens. Love the focus hold button on this.
Because this is for cropped sensors, the focal length will actually be 16.5mm, how does this affect the Aperture at f/1.8? Will it still be an actual 1.8 or does that change as well to something like f/2.8?
Would love to see how this compares to the 11mm end of the Tamron 11-20mm lens.

Unfortunately the sony 10-20 is just F4 but you may also have a look at the tamron 11-20 F2.8 which is one aperture brighter as a compromise. And maybe consider a gimbal for smooth camera panning.
Arthur, would you recommend him for a real estate photo?
Do you think it is better than the LAOWA 9MM 2.8?
I don't know if I should change my LAOWA 9mm 2.8 for that Sony one and its authentic focus. I want to prioritize quality so that straight lines are not deformed.
E mount? Is that for cropped cameras? Or full frame? If it’s for full frame, nice!
Gosh, I want that Laowa so bad... I wish it had autofocus. Could I combine it with an autofocus adapter (Pronto, Megadap, etc.)?
I just bought the Laowa 9mm……
But for landscape + real estate, the 9mm (~13mm) seems to be still a big advantage for dramatic width over 11m (~16mm) albeit lack of AF which shouldn’t matter if not vlogging
Exactly, I’m ordering a Laowa 9mm too because of the wide angle for real state work
@@hecjvaldez I've had my laowa 9mm for two years now and it is an excellent lens. Especially for building interiors because it is a rectilinear lens; "zero-D". paid $499 then and it is still same price!
use mine on buildings. perfect with the zero-D. Especially on big old church buildings. being manual focus isn't an issue, so don't think this Sony 11mm will help much. I don't use it for people pics.
Wow. The rokinon at 259 is such a good deal.
Hi Arthur , what would be a good option for Lens for A7iv? We are taking a trip to Europe soon . I currently only have 1 lens - Sigma 24-70 f2.8. I plan to take 2-3 lens for the trip. Thanks for your suggestion
How do you think it compares to the sony 10-18mm f4 oss ?
Hey Arthur, I'm a beginner in photography and am very confused on what wide or ultravide lens I should buy. I want to take large sharp photos in old european cities in small plazas, getting complete details of the paintings and sculptures from the buildings. I use an A6000. what do you recommend?
If this had OSS I’d preorder in an instant. Most of Sony’s apsc don’t have IBIS, I don’t know why they refuse to put it in 99% of their lenses
What light are you using in the back of your shot, next to the wall with the barn doors open?
I'm sold for this one. I currently have the Samyang 12mm manual, and the Sigma 16mm, which for my purposes are a bit redundant (bought the Sigma for the AF), bulky, and weight 3x as much as the new Sony. The Samyang AF version never really convinced me, but this one surely does.
could you do in-depth comparison of Tamron 11-20 vs Sony 10-20 F4 G?
My favorite lens for youtube video in ef 17-40 f/4. But for photos 24-104 f/4😎👍
Hey now, nothing silly about this YT channel!
Thank you for another thoughtful, informative and much appreciated e-mount lens review.
Any thoughts about the Laowa 12mm 2.8 Zero-D lens compared to this one? 🤔
If you had to pick one, would you get this or the 10-20mm f4??? (or the Tamron 11-20mm??)
This one is cool. I want apsc just for this to make vlogs even if i had full frame haha
It’s too cropped in for me. Maybe I need to fix my settings but it’s really narrow and zoomed in
Thanks for this video and the other new Sony release lenses.
Long life APSC ! Thanks for another great review. Cheers
they need to bring out longer focal lengths for apsc now like 85mm 1.8
I got all excited that they made one for full frame.
I assume this video was released before you reviewed viltrox13mm?
Recently got the sigma 16mm f1.4 which gets me similar shots for much less cost, although it’s much larger than this Sony lens. Love the focus hold button on this.
Sigma's 16mm 1.4 is better imo
Not same. Not wide enough. That’s a 24mm equivalent not 18 like this lens. Huge difference
@@Chris-ey7zy difference between 11 and 16 is the same as 18 and 24, no need to calculate it to prove a point😀
so this a cropped only lens? can you use this on full frame?
Because this is for cropped sensors, the focal length will actually be 16.5mm, how does this affect the Aperture at f/1.8? Will it still be an actual 1.8 or does that change as well to something like f/2.8?
like f/2.7 . better get an a7c than aps-c bodys. price and weight of the lenses is similar too... a7c+ sony 20 1.8 is tha way to go
There is a 14mm with larger diameter and total light captured. At apsc this nothing but a 16mm. So, the FE 14mm is wider and captured more light
Would love to test this for astrophotography.
Hi, Thanks Arthur, It is indeed nice lens but quite pricey! so which one is the second best option for wide angle to sony APS-C camera please ? TX.
Why you dont compare it with the Tamron 11-20?
