Nice one mate, and a well deserved rest! I made this exact trip in 2002, the train was very old, loco hauled, and the ferry was exactly one of the derelict ones you spotted in Georgetown! Nice to see both legs improved! Shame about the old "BR style" sandwiches, did they have any local meals available on the train? The food overall was one of my absolute highlights of Malaysia. Cheers for now!

    • @LetsMakeaTrip

Cheers mate. Yes it sounds like the transport has improved (though yours sounds more fun). They did have local meals yes but I just wanted something ‘basic on that particular day. Had some great food in Penang particularly Pad Kra Pay (I think it was).

Really interesting video, Mark. I believe that train was manufactured in China. I must have used one of the old ferries in the mid-1970s when I hired a car from Avis in Penang and drove to Kuala Kangsa (a Royal town north of Ipoh) and back. Those old ferries carried many cars in the days before the bridge.

Nice one Mark! Good to revisit that run. I did it 20+ years ago (from Singapore) when the old KL station was in use as the main terminus. I am surprised at the poor quality of the food. I remember being served curry and rice at my seat (but I may have been in first class). Where you able to get a beer at least? Malaysia has always been shy of alcohol but I do reall finding it relatively freely even then. Looked like an easy trip - as it was 20+ years ago. Paul in Oz.

The old ferries not just ferries passengers and motorcycles, they ferry cars too! They were replaced by Langkawi express in 2018 which were really small, cramped and uncomfortable though the aircon is good. This year, the official replacements started in august and I haven’t tried it yet. There were some news back in 2018 about turning the old ones into restaurants, but it has not materialised and probably never will.
And! When dining on the train, avoid sandwiches and ALL western offerings. Buy Malay/Indian food like nasi lemak or nasi briyani, you’d never go wrong with those if you can take spice.

Greetings from a Scotsman in KL. Recently watched your videos of Scotland and Wales...
The old KL station design was the winner of a competition. All designs were scrutinised by a Committee..They all liked the design...but the chief of the committee said..looks good, but it won't be strong enough to hold the snow. A committee member who had actually been to Malaya said...there is no snow as it is always hot. The design was approved and the station is what you saw during your KL visit.

Hi John, thanks for the info - very interesting and no I can’t imagine snow being a problem in KL!! I’m back in the UK now otherwise yes it would’ve been great to meet up. I’ve got a few more trips lined up over here then off to Rio de Janeiro for a week - another great city. I absolutely loved KL and will definitely be back one day, so maybe I can take you up on the offer. Shame I missed you this time but all the best, Mark 😊
