I’m sure one of you guys already knows this but if you want to weld up those holes in the core support; if you get a piece of copper (plumbing pipe and hammer it flat) clamp that behind the hole and weld to it, filling the hole. The weld won’t stick to the copper and you can just remove it after. Great series 👍🏼 and man am I envious of your shop! it’s 👌🏼
I love how thoroughly informative and easy to follow along easy to understand you explain things when repairing stuff in or on engine. I’m very excited to see y’all get this Z back on the road!!
Rotate each cylinder your working on to top dead center. If the valve does drop the Piston will stop it from falling all the way to the bottom of the cylinder. Might give you a chance to pull it back up instead of having to pull the head.

Well done sir! I normally watch a couple of minutes of instructional videos just to judge(and mock) the presenter but this is about the best I've seen!
I've seen some videos of another method of changing the valve steam seals. You put a lot of soft rope through the spark plug opening. Then carefully raise the piston to be as up as possible. The rope will provide a soft surface to hold the valve in position. The obvious advantage of this method is that you don't need a compressor. Not every one as one... Hope this is a good method, because I'm planning to use it in my daughter's Fiat Punto...

Hello Tavarish and Jared that was an excellent instruction video . It's cool to see someone take the time to explain everything on how to get it fixed properly.
Just to add, you don’t *have* to use compressed air on the valves. Back when I did my Supra’s valve stem seals I just lowered a decent amount of rope through the spark plug hole and then used a socket on the crank to turn it until the piston compressed the rope against the valve to hold them in place. Both ways work well but I just had a fear of an air leak and the valves dropping into the cylinder.
Also, just to add to my comment, I’m loving this channel(maybe even more than the main channel!), Jared is a great addition and I really like how he explains and talks through what he is doing.
It's not quite the same thing but this really reminds me of custom model train projects, just that amazing feeling when you complete work on it and everything comes together a little bit more.
Even cheaper and more reliable than modifying a compression tester is a LONG piece of soft rope. Back down the piston in question a few degrees from TDC, shove all the rope that will fit into the spark plug hole with a tail left to pull it back out, GENTLY turn the crank back towards TDC until you feel the rope compressing against the valves. Downside is you have to get a feel for how much rope is needed, and you need to turn the crank to TDC for each piston in turn, and return the crank back to the timing mark when you are done. Upside is there is no risk at all of accidentally unseating the valve against the air pressure, and you don't need to leave the air compressor running the whole time as the air leaks by. If you need to leave the job half done (if for example you dropped a keeper in the gravel driveway) you can.
Tavarish Milwaukee has a small portable sander for spot welds just zap at them and watch the parts fall off , no need for Hammers and screw drivers , although banging it out is always fun.
You guys should also get a high milage AP1 S2000. Fix some gasket leaks, valve stem seals, ap2 retainers (intake) and ap1 retainers (exhaust). Then supercharge it! I have 330k miles on my original engine now. I did have a headgasket failure around the 250k mile mark and upgraded to a Spoon gasket for a bit more compression. 220whp in a 2L NA engine than sees 9000rpm daily.

still I'm kinda more in favor of dropping a really lively 4 cylinder into "Earl", power to spare with lower weight up front for handling+braking. still fun in a straight line but maybe better cornering for a course or drift setup. square doming the hood is plenty easy for the i6 too. been decades but had my hands in a scarab build, firewall cut+moved back 4" for a 327 chevy w/5spd, engine+trans mounted further back for better weight distribution. 400 ponies on a 650cfm carb was lots of fun.
Drilling out the spot welds for the core support and creating metal shavings right next to an exposed/open engine??? HMMM! That might help create more blue smoke.
you are not supposed to re use the timing belt on interference engines, the exception is when you are rebuilding and need to do cam adjustments (fiddle around) timing belts are cheap but when the y they break or jump a tooth, you can punch holes in the pistons.
Jared's right, parent's dishwasher is a suitable alternative for cleaning parts. For you older guys, wife's oven is suitable for heating parts for powdercoat, too!

Clam shell egg carton for the caps. Damage proof, order mess up proof too. Seriously, a shop should have like 4 or 5 clam shell egg cartons for sorting stuff on the quick.
Just to be safe as well you can do the companion cylinders as well like 1 and 6 then 2 and 5 then 3 and 4. And turn the crank roughly a 1/3 of a revolution to limit how far the valves can fall if you loose pressure or push the valve down. Glad I did that because I used a socket and a hammer to get the retainers off of my car and then when I was reinstalling everything I made a tool and messed it up and it pushed the valve and spring down. The valve fell but it hit the top of the piston so I could grab the end of it so I didn’t have to pull the head off. I don’t know how the angles work for the valves to let them fall all the way out of the head or if they’d end up hitting the cylinder wall but either way the head’ll have do come off it you loose one.
On a 6 for the companion cylinders. For a 4 it’s usually 1-4 and 2-3. Most Honda’s are like this I believe but I know some geo motors have 1-2 and 3-4 as the companions.
Gloves are good. I've heard horror stories about old school auto guys who end up getting cancer from all the fluids and chemicals they're exposed to that just seep into your skin. I sure wish the Car Wizard would stop tasting fluids.
@@bigbear7233 It's anecdotal evidence at best -- mostly what I've heard a coworkers who has spent 20~30 years in the auto industry and is now losing multiple friends in the industry to bone cancer specifically -- and these kinds of things only crop up after decades of exposure so it takes people who have been around it all for years to see the connection. Weekend warriors are probably fine but if you're doing it every day I'd invest in some good nitrile gloves. Just thinking about how easily gas and synthetic oil can get into your skin is enough to convince me to wear them.
hello I have a question what if the piston or valve has a leak then you can't keep the valves closed with air. Keep 100% closed by putting rope in the spark plug hole and pushing the piston up against the valves so that the valves cannot fall into the cylinder chamber !! for the rest I find this very educational !! I hope to see more of these beautiful video.s greetings from Holland
A dish washer like parts washer is easy to build for the home gamer. You need some thin metal (doesn't need to hold the world) a rotisserie motor, a pump and line that's ok with your preferred solvent and pressure, a heater, and some metal sprinklers/sprayers. Seriously, there's nothing special about an automatic parts washers and the first ones that appeared on the market some decades ago (for the shop gamer) were units put together with bailing wire and crocks). Yes, you'll need to know how to weld and look a few parts washers to understand how they work, but this is a two weekends project if you don't care for fancy stuff, just want to have something work and eliminate you from the washing process.

Jared: Take a 10 or 11 mil
Me: Happy european Noises.
You guys are the best couple on RUclips!!
hello I have a question what if the piston or valve has a leak then you can't keep the valves closed with air. Keep 100% closed by putting rope in the spark plug hole and pushing the piston up against the valves so that the valves cannot fall into the cylinder chamber !! for the rest I find this very educational !! I hope to see more of these beautiful video.s greetings from Holland
Tavarish n Jared plz keep the vids coming love watching these
Has Wrench every day become Jarreds channel? I'm not complaining, I love it

Dog Tired Guitars it’s really not that dramatic... clearly you have never worked on a car before.
GKY 😂 and clearly you’ve never been on the internet before. Stick around. Scope things out. There’s some cool stuff on here. Be careful, though. There are some freaks as well.
Dog Tired Guitars not a funny joke, since you’re one of the only one who seems to relate...
GKY Aw damn. Sick burn there, Skippy. You got me.
GKY r/WOOOSHHHH boomer in the internet eh?
One useful tip you could include next time you do a relevant job would be to show viewers how to identify, drill out and ultimately replace things like those spotwelds!
