I have noticed a few comments on getting glass shards and glass dust in the sump. There were no shards and since im drilling from the outside in, the dust is on the outside. This would be different if i was drilling from the top down. Im drilling from the side. No dust or anything got in the tank besides the glass circle i removed. (Now on etsy) Kidding... if i did get anything in the sump, it would have to be a pretty large amount to cause any real issues(needing to get sucked into the pump and make its way to the top tank and pollute the entire 300gal system. Far fetched for sure. Bottom line i guess is... i was there. Nothing got in haha.
Lol. Thanks for answering the question. my thought was "joey isn't saying anything about the glass shards? does that mean it's not a problem or does he just assume we would know what to do? " so definitely thank you for clearing it up for me.
This makes sense. I needed to do something similar, and knowing Joey did it makes me feel all warm and tingly. I wonder if I can sell my circular glass charm on his Etsy?
What is it diluting with water at 8:50? I would say that is water you are spraying on as you go through the glass and as it has colour surely this therefore contains something and the only thing that can be is glass dust isn't it?
Joey, great job and I know you know what you are doing, but for the newbies, don't drill into glass wearing flip flops and wear some type of eye protection when drilling. Just my 2 cents on good safety practices.
Everyone is worried about the glass dust in the water. The majority of the grindings will be on the outside of the tank. Any glass dust that goes inside when the drill passes through will behave like sand and simply settle to the bottom of the sump. Glass doesn't float once it is suspended in the water.
To drill the hole easier first drill into a piece of wood or sheetrock then use that as a template and you will get a perfect hole without scratches. trust me it works 😋
I cant thank you enough for this video I just got a 125g tank and want to drill holes for a sump. I definitely had questions about tempered glass and drilling holes in the glass your video came in right on time thank you very much
Joey...I know you won’t see this but I have been watching ur vids for a while now and I finnaly have my own yt channel...I havnt had any success yet but every time I watch your videos it inspires me to keep going...keep up the great work-Jase the Fish Guy
Great vid dude! Although I disagree with you saying not to try it, but you can because you're experienced and have done it many times........Well how else do you get experience? by trying it. so everyone go ahead and try it. it may fail it may not.. thats how you learn and get experience.
I really like your clever trick to find out if a pane of glass is tempered or not! Awesome little trick! I am worried about the glass shavings and dust making into the water though, no matter how hard you try, doing this job with water in the tank is guaranteed to introduce at least SOME glass powder into the system, even if it is only a very small amount. Does anyone, or even yourself Joey, know what kinda affect this would have on the fish? More curious than anything else.
Oh man is this not the realest comment! When i watch a video of his about repairing or resealing an aquarium or building an aquarium im like heck yeah i got this! Then i let it sink in a few days later you dont got this lol. Even if i did make one as big as i want i couldnt keep it in my room because my room is full of aquariums and a terrarium. I have a 125 gallon tank that i have had my bearded dragon in for 4 years but i am building a wooden enclosure for him that when he gets put in it i will reseal and reseam the 125 gallon and get it set back up for feesh. I have a 75 gallon tank with a tiger oscar and a veil fin tiger oscar, a 39 gallon tank that is empty awaiting just a simple reseal because its old and hasnt leaked yet so im gonna reseal it before it leaks because once it leaks the silicone between the sheets is compromised and then the whole tank needs reseamed and resealed. The terrarium is 4 feet wide and 3 feet deep. With all those added up i have like not much space haha like a walk path to each tank and to my bed haha
Nice video! Would have been very education for those guys who bursted my 2m long terrarium's top when I asked them to drill a hole for lighting cables ... Anyhow thanks Joey! :D
Joey the lines your are seeing are not from rolling the glass out. It’s the stress induced to make it tempered. It makes the outside layers compress the inside layer making it more flexible and stronger.
Damn. I thought you were going to show how to drill a hole in an aquarium filled with water and then instantly put the bulkhead in and plumb it so fast that all the water doesn't leak out of the tank
Dude I love your vids.... Bro I mean it you are the best for DIY staff.... I love you... I have done many thinks gor my marine and fresh water tanks just from watching your vids... I have a fresh water tank (300L) with absolutely 0% water changes thanks to you... You are amazing guy... Keep up and show the noobs like me all kind of DIY. The DIYKing man. Best wishes
Just got home from vacation in Hungary, finally! Now I can see all the videos I've missed, and with a glance at the tittles I'm already brimming with excitement!! 😀😀😀
A lot of screen protectors are tempered glass so it might be a good idea to know that if you have a glass screen protector when you that test. I have polarized shades and using my phone while I have them on creates the same rainbow effect.
Brilliant info, just done this myself after 7 cans, battery ran out half way through but after an hour charge was very easy to do. I did use a suction guide though & I would advise getting one, makes it so much easier, they are only £10 of eBay.
I remember the good ol days when your RUclips account was called “urau joey” idk how to spell the name of the fish and then you changed it to “king of diy (aquariums)” it’s crazy how time flies
The ground up glass residue isn’t sharp, it’s basically really fine sand. Besides, most of it ends up on the side you drill from anyway. It won’t do any harm.
Tempered glass in the UK and EU should be stamped in the corner with the relevant British and EU Standard, the stamp will usually be in the corner of the pane.

I'm gonna need that etsy account info..😉
The king of DIY was the movie you just so happened to watch called, "PIRANHA 3DD"?
What is it diluting with water at 8:50? I would say that is water you are spraying on as you go through the glass and as it has colour surely this therefore contains something and the only thing that can be is glass dust isn't it?
This video was relaxing, especially when you were talking about the glass. I learned something new, thanks!
Always learning from you Joey!! Much appreciated an enjoyed. Another great vid!!

People usually worry about things they dont understand. No worries. Thanks for helping clarify.

I know! I mentioned the video i made and linked to it doing it that way. (I made it years ago)
@@thekingofdiy I rushed to comment before watching the whole video. ... I guess it was before my time. Maybe I should ketch up on all the old ones!
lmao i thought you were drilling into the actual fish tanks with the fish in them, this video is very informative
How do you feel to be the world's largest aquarium channel?
I have been for around 6-7 years now haha. Not as big of a deal as it sounds.
I'm from Brazil , for aquarium channel you are giant and I think your channel is bigger and better !!!
Living on the edge in this video Joey 😂😂😂 knowing my luck it would crack 😂😂😂
Another way to tell if glass is tempered is to smack it with a hammer….. the results speak for themselves.

Put a wet sponge inside the hole saw much easier to wet the bit
Congrats on one million!
Perfect timing on this video, I've been procrastinating on drilling a tank and this will give me the push I need
Anyone else think he was going to drill a hole in his car window and outside door to show us the difference? No? Just me? Okay lol 😂😂
I see u live in a beautiful place. A beautiful surrounding. So peacefull

Keeling98 he meant don't try drilling it while setup your first time. If your still learning it's best to have it empty and on its side.
tbh if you started an Etsy page I would totally shop there
Congrats Joey for getting golden play button
Remember to use a square diamond coated drilling bit if you want to drill a square hole in your aquarium!!!
holy smokes, look at that bicep. good going joey with the drill. good show. cp.
"I live on the edge and need to cut myself every once in awhile to make it look like I'm busy. "
I live on the edge too Joey 👍👍👍
Wow I learned something new !!! I always love your content !
Etsy 😂 you had me for a second 🤔 when do you have time for that 🤣
Old school felt good. There are so many videos from over the years. Thanks Joey!
pro tip: cut a sponge into a circle, soak it in water and set it inside the hole saw before cutting so it constantly cools and lubricates.
Petition to call the Sunshine Pleco Mr. Smee?
Nice.
Love how the fish are watching you work. Lol.

OMG the shirt..RIP Buddy
THANK YOU SIR I LEARNED SOMETHING TODAY, BE BLESSED🤙
Great stuff joey 😁😁😁
Wow I never knew this! Thanks Joey, great vid as per usual
Lmfaoooooo. That etsy joke had me dying! Great video! Learned alot from you.
Awesome videos lately. All the hints and tips are always welcome.
Cool and helpful!
i loved this video
4am where I’m at perfect timing to watch this before I get some sleep
Hi Joey, is there any worry about any glass particles going into circulation throughout the tanks?
My thoughts exactly 🤔
nah that stuff is basically sand at that time
Songe baby
I really like your clever trick to find out if a pane of glass is tempered or not! Awesome little trick!

That's was a brave move... I've seen videos of alot of tanks breaking , but Joey is the man!!!
I like the video and then begin to watch :)
Great tip
I loved when you wet the glass and said "That made no difference l" xD
Science lessons with joey
Wow didn't realise you hit 1mil nice man
Is there a concern for the glass debris inside the sump entering the aquarium?
Glad you revisited the topic, your confidence is contagious though.

Id love to see older vids revisited and modernized.
Very impressed and happy with your science. To the point and accurate. Well done!
I love your vids I wish I can have a aquarium like you
That glass pendent joke had me cracking up!
the best line for this video would have been "do as i say not as i do" lol
Thanks for that information....now I know how to do that....
Damn. I thought you were going to show how to drill a hole in an aquarium filled with water and then instantly put the bulkhead in and plumb it so fast that all the water doesn't leak out of the tank
this guy is so hyped up on energy drinks, it wouldn't surprise me lol. and he could do it successfully!
science with joey! a new direction for the channel? :p
Yes like being back in physics class

Joey dang those biseps I came here to learn how to drill a tank but I got a gunshow #plus1biseps. Lol lifting tanks is the new way to work out😸😸
I'll take one of those tshirts xxl. Buddy was a badass fish!
That's great man! All of your aquariums and fishes was awesome just keep on blogging! ❤️
Awwww damn. I wanted a fish tank pendant!!! 😂🤣😂🤣 that was so funny!
Did you just turned into Scorpion? 6:24 XD
"I make pendants on etsy." 😂😂😂

Very educational...thanks!
6:24 Joey should be scorpion from mortal kombat for halloween lol
The diffraction rainbow effect is the stress lines/gradient in the tempered glass - the reason it shatters.
Hi Joey that’s awesome
Congrats on the 1 mil!!
Yo that glass pendant idea is sweet I would totally buy one you could laser etch an Asian arowana in it or some of your other fav fish
It's good that you're getting back to DIY videos.
I have been for over 10 years... im the only one in my videos doing it all myself.
Love the teaching 👌🏽
9:19 thug life 😎
Are you not concerned about glass dust/chips getting into the water?
i was wondering the same thing
Why be concerned? Nothing can get in. Im drilling from the outside in, on a side.
Awesome video I was thinking of adding an overflow to my tank but didn't know how to drill the tank full of water you rock!
Brilliant info, just done this myself after 7 cans, battery ran out half way through but after an hour charge was very easy to do.

I like your shirt. And that whole temperament lesson was pretty cool. I had no idea.
Aaron Bizahaloni if you have been here for a while this is a test what is the fishes name on his shirt?
I bet he works out (look at those arms!) so that he is able to do more straineous DIY aquarium tasks 😁🤣😅
Trop cool tes lunettes 👍🙂
Your aquariums look awesome...
Rule of thumb is be 3 inches away from any edges
What about glass dust/particles getting into the sump and mixing into the water and going into the tank?
same question here
The ground up glass residue isn’t sharp, it’s basically really fine sand. Besides, most of it ends up on the side you drill from anyway. It won’t do any harm.
There was dust from the cermaic media in the water. No glass dust got in the tank. its all on the outside.
