The thing about Merry and Pippin... they might have their issues with mischief, but they did not hesitate to help Frodo. They took him to Bree with no questions asked. They decided to go on the Fellowship without really understanding what they were doing besides helping Frodo. Those are the sort of friends you want to have.
Pippin is the only real troublemaker. Merry often gets deemed guilty by association, but he's actually quite intelligent. Just in this half of the movie, Merry is the one that guided the hobbits to Brandywine bridge to escape the Ringwraiths and it was he who threw the sack that distracted the wraith that was right on top of them enough for them to get away. Pippin is quite young and inexperienced, and so he makes a lot of mistakes because of his curious nature. In hobbit years, he's basically still a teenager since hobbits come of age at 33. He's also not stupid, as you'll see later on. He just has a lot of growing up to do.
Haha I remember doing that too! My parents let me and my sister take the day off school and she took me with her friends to west edmonton mall. We were maybe 4th in line at 5AM. They played the first two extended editions before the premier of return of the king.
I've heard some English as a second language viewers say this film made them appreciate the language more and really see how beautiful it can be. And it's true, Tolkien was a linguist and a master of the English language. His dialogue is incredible and his perspectives insightful. It's truly a labor of love and one of the most beautiful stories ever told. Jackson does an incredible job putting it to film and preserving the core of the story. It gets better with each movie. Bring tissues with you going forward if you get emotional because this story is an emotional rollercoaster.
I have heard from non-native speakers that they appreciate the precision of the language. There is poetry, allusion, metaphor, but it is kept lean. Little redundant phrasing, correct use of vocabulary. It is also acted well, so if a meaning is at all vague, the intent is made clear by the actor. And if you are going to make the effort of listening to a foreign language, then it should at least be well-crafted!
Taking Merry and Pippin creates balance some moviegoers miss. As Elrond says in the book, "The Company of the Ring shall be Nine; and the Nine Walkers shall be set against the Nine Riders that are evil."
The location filming for all three films was done at the same time in New Zealand. Post-production (CGI, editing, etc.) took a year for each film, so they were released a year apart 2001-2003. 9:45 - The stories Bilbo is telling the children are what happened in "The Hobbit" films, 60 years before this film. 20:00 - Christopher Lee (Saruman) has played many classic movie villains, and had an amazing life outside films. 23:00 - The screams of the Black Riders came from Fran Walsh, one of the script writers for the films. The sound department then raised the pitch higher. 42:00 - Merry and Pippin are like teenage boys at this point. They have no experience with real problems and dangers. But they grow up through the 3 movies to become braver and wiser.
I love these movies!! You are amazing Emma and thank you for doing this. Such a welcome surprise today!! I’m amazed by how you managed to put out a reaction video of almost 4 hours into 42 minutes. I don’t think I could have done it!! Thanks again
Christopher Lee, who plays Saruman, was the only person involved with the production, cast and crew, who actually met Tolkien (once, in a pub, and I think might have exchanged a few letters with him). He was an avid fan of the books, reading them yearly, on average, from their first publication until his death more than 50 years later. For years he had really wanted to play Gandalf, even saying that in their brief discussion that he had gotten Tolkien's blessing for it, although he also didn't want them adapted to movies at all, but by the time these were made he recognized that he was too old for such a role and agreed to play Saruman instead. He apparently took to wandering around the production offices in New Zealand with a copy of the book, making suggestions to anyone he could get to listen. He was a truly extraordinary man. He was special agent with the Department of Ungentlemanly Warfare along with his cousin, James Bond creator Ian Fleming, and did missions in North Africa and Italy, for a few years after the war and before he started acting, he hunted escaped Nazis. He was a trained and expert swordsman, honorary member of three stunt-guilds, widely regarded as one of the best for decades, and at one point (might still be true) had appeared in more duels on film than any other actor. He also once had the distinction of starring in more films than any other actor (the vast majority playing villains, such as Saruman, Count Dooku in Star Wars, Dracula in a bunch of Hammer Horror films, the assassin Scaramanga in a James Bond film, which is why he is so good at it). He owned a significant collection of occult books, spoke English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish fluently, could converse passably in Russian, Greek, and Swedish. He had operatic training and released two Heavy Metal Albums, both of them after turning 90
An interesting fact- In the scene where the Uruk-Hai throws Aragorn's dagger at him that dagger was real! The actor was supposed to throw it far to Aragorn's left and a separate scene with him throwing a rubber dagger at Aragorn would be inserted in post production. When the Actor threw the real dagger towards Aragorn , the forehead piece of his makeup/costume slipped over his' eyes and he threw it directly at Viggo! Viggo actually blocked it with his sword.! Peter Jackson was so impressed that they never filmed the rubber dagger scene and used the actual take!
15:01 "How old?" At the beginning of the FotR Frodo is 50, Merry is 36, and Pippin is 29. Hobbits age slowly, so the 'tweens can last into the 20's. Average Hobbit life span is 100 years.
You were quite right about the two younger hobbits being on The Quest, Emma - but so many wonderful moments of drama and fun would have been missed. And - trust me - they do redeem themselves by the end of The Trilogy 🙂 Wonderful to see you doing Movies now as well as just songs...
I remember when I first saw the scene with the moth flying toward Gandalf, I thought it was Charlotte Church's voice, lol, but I think you're right, it's seems to be a boy's voice.
Each of the 3 books are separated into 2 parts, where you paused was right at the end of part 1. So you don't want Meridoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took to travel with the Fellowship, you just know those 2 will get into some mischief.
not sure if it was how youtube was playin for me during the reaction but it seemed to be jumping like a needle skipping across a broken record, took the interest out of it for me. glad you like the movie though.
I live in New Zealand and the part of the film that is close to where I live, is the part where Frodo and the other hobbits are hiding under the stump of a tree from a Ringwraith.
When you've finished reacting to these films you really should visit New Zealand where you can see many of the filming locations, and even visit Hobbiton itself!
Who, during the film's premier, leaned over and whispered to his daughter, "What's wrong with your voice?" "Dad!" she replied. "Im an actor. I'm acting!" That just cracks me up. It's such a "dumb dad" thing to say.😆
I like your earrings. They make me thirsty for a cocktail. 🍸😋😉🤗 So glad to be watching you react to these incredible films. Your enjoyment of the music and all the beauty of this magical world makes the journey even better. Thank you, Emma! 🥰
The trilogy (which I consider one single movie released in three parts) has been my favorite since it was released. Really enjoyed your reaction and engagement! I totally agree that the Merry and Pippin to this point in the movie, taking them doesn't make much sense, it makes more sense in the book although they are still somewhat irresponsible at points. You asked their age, Merry and Pippin are both in their twenties, for The Hobbits (for whom life expectancy was around 100 years), coming of age was 33 years old, with the 20's being called 'tweens' and considered generally troublesome and irresponsible. It is worth noting that as a University Professor, Tolkien taught 20-something for a living so viewing them as immature and irresponsible totally makes sense.
Besides BTTF THE perfect trilogy. What a happening that was, watching it in cinema. I remember it well. I could point out endless trivia. Great you watch the extended version. Try to spot director Peter Jackson in all three! And: Of all the actors in the Fellowship, it's actually Gimli actor John Rhys-Davis (Sallah in Indiana Jones) who is actually the tallest of them!
I am so thrilled to see you're going to watch the best movies ever, from the best books ever!! You're one of my two favorite female reactors, so I'm totally hyped for this. You are def going to love this beautiful adventure. Tolkien was a special human. ❤
Your life is now changed...for some that are here no longer remember it. You are never late nor are you early. You react to The Lord of the Rings precisely when you mean to. Some people call this the "Star Wars of our Generation." There is no comparison to the depth, languages and lore that is created in this. It seems like actual history, not a Galaxy far far away.... I never tire of people learning of The Shire. In fact you can still go there to this day in New Zealand. We were so excited seeing the Extended Editions after knowing the theatricals for so many years. Recognizing every new scene instantly. Now we begin the journey...
Loved star wars since 3rd grade. Read so many of the books. 35 now. Read the hobbit freshman year. The three other books in 8th grade. Comparing both stories is dumb. And these movies have nothing on the books. Atleast if you have an imagination. To watch these I'm assuming one does. As Einstein once said. "Imagination is more important than knowledge". What make 5hese even better if you know Tolkien life and the things he did. Quite an adventure In itself.
@@LifeisANovelcomparing Star Wars to LOTR isn’t “dumb”. They share a lot between them. Both are fantasy worlds, magical, with their own languages and settings. The characters are distinctive and instantly recognisable. Opinions about them are going to be subjective. It’s a question of taste. Enjoy them both for their unique imagination and artistic creations with their complex backgrounds.
@@dullaf4099 I think it is. Definitely in the sense of trying to explain which is better. And as I said before if you going to explain Hobbit and LOTR I can see if you mentioned the books which Tolkien wrote himself. Not the movies which pale in comparison lol. ALOT stories share similarities. We can even take it back to Gilgamesh. But these are my thoughts just as I'm sure w.e you wrote up there are yours and I accept that lol. Life goes on.
Enya sings the song we hear in the scene where Arwen and Aragorn are on the bridge in Rivendell. The song is called " Aniron". My spelling might be off. She wrote the song in the Elvish language.
Even though Pippin makes a few mistakes along the way which brings trouble. Marry and Pippin do some important things which helps a lot with defeating Sauron in the end. You'll see what I mean as you watch the movies.
You're going to have to watch the Hobbit afterwards, it's the story of Bilbo's Adventures. The book was written before the Lord of the Rings but the movie was filmed after Lord of the Rings. Both the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings were filmed in New Zealand. The Hobbiton set for the Hobbit is a big tourist destination in New Zealand.
Since you also react to music o your other channel, Christopher Lee aka Saruman also joined Rhapsody (of Fire) a symphonic metal band as a narrator on some songs and actually also sang on one song with them! Look for MAgic of the wizard's dream (how fitting)
During the council of Elrond Gandalf simply chanted the words written on the Ring using the language of Mordor called Black Speech for the purpose of proving that the Ring is altogether Evil. Which is why Elrond pointed out never before has anyone spoken Black Speech within the Borders of Rivendell.
"One hundred years ago" LOL Oh wait, that's obvious, you must be part Elvish ! If you liked the operatic method of the movies, you'll love this trilogy, Howard Shore dis a fantastic job giving life to it with his soundtrack. Tolkien wrote the books as poetry and integrated songs in it too. Nearly no one notices the horse shaped water !
You didn't indicate that this was only part 1 of your reaction, and, half way through watching this, I thought, "boy, is Emma gonna have to fly through the second half of this movie... too bad!" - but, not to worry... part 2 is coming...
Emma mentioned that their would be a part 2 Saturday and invited everybody to come with and complete the journey with her and her MAGICAL and CHARMING REACTION, looking forward to it with great anticipation; 🙏👍💃💃💃💃🍁🍁🎬🎙🎶🎧🙏💃💃💃💃;

As perfect as this movie is, ignoring the departures from the book, the one thing that really bugs me is the moment Frodo faces his first temptation to put on the ring. I certainly don't mean the bugs, spider, and worms. The thing that gets me is the fact that they used someone other than Elijah Wood when they focus in on his hands. Throughout the rest of the movies, it's Elijah's hands when there's a closeup of him holding the ring. It always struck me as odd that they didn't reshoot that scene using him.
Although that's true, it's also misleading. It's a little ambiguous, but it's possible that hobbits age slower than humans, at least in their early years. They come of age at 33, so if we treat that as about 18, then 50 for a Hobbit would be like 30 for us. In addition, once Frodo took possession of the Ring at 33, his aging slowed even more. He would probably have looked in his mid twenties. (This is going by the books. In the movies there were maybe a few months between Bilbo's birthday and Frodo starting out on his journey, not 17 years) On the other hand, hobbits don't seem to live a who lot longer than humans, or Bilbo's 111 wouldn't have been considered exceptionally old. This tends to contradict the idea that hobbits age slower than humans. I would say that the deciding factor is the word "tweens." It's equivalent to "teens" for us, i.e. a synonym for adolescence. But for hobbits, "tweens," and therefore adolescence, means the age from 20-32, definitely later than the equivalent stage of development in humans. So I still subscribe to the theory that hobbits age slower, and therefore the appearance of the hobbits in the movies would have been about right.
@@toddhadley9002 I agree with most of what your saying, however what I said was in no way misleading. I simply stated their true ages in years. Many reactors assume they are only in their teens due to their looks and naivete. When I said "quite old" I was not referring to their maturity but simply the fact they are 20-30 years older then they appear.
12:53 - no other lotr character except Bilbo was able to let the ring go voluntarily, showing that he had the strongest willpower among all. And the tension in music highlights this super important moment
Well, technically Boromir let it go voluntarily on the snowy mountain, but that was before Sauron was really awake, also Sam let it go in Return Of The King, when Sauron and the ring was at it's most powerful.
и т.д. и т.п.
If you like the hobbits land welcome to my home it looks almost the same but i have to warn you there are wild animals like elephants and ita really mountainous around 5,000 m. Above Sea level❤❤ love your reaction
The only scene of the Extended Edition I didn't like was Isildur putting on the ring. In the theatrical version, when Bilbo put it on at his party, folks in the theater gasped along with the party crowd. It was a much more effective scene at showing the ring's power than Isildur's. Plus, Isildur's scene just didn't look right, since you can tell he was standing in front of a green screen when he put it on.

If you ever see Liv Tyler in an online interview, you would realise that her voice isn’t deep at all. She’s spoken before on how she had to lower it for her speaking parts in these movies.
I understand the whole copyright claim thing, but cutting the movie footage so often and always mid-sentence makes for a bad viewing experience. Especially since you're generally not saying anything at the time.
I hate to complain, but I didn't like your editing style. Constantly cutting the dialogue mid sentence is annoying. Perhaps do the next movie in two parts?

I think you tend to talk too much which is why you miss information. In Bree, Aragorn tells the Hobbits that the Ringwraiths are neither living or dead, yet later on Weathertop, you comment that you think they might be immortal. It's certainly not the only instance of this.

I love how you immediately acknowledged Merry & Pippin coming along was a bad idea… or will it be?! Curious if your mind will be changed by the end.
"Oh, those kids are soo cute!"
Agreed, I assume, by most everyone. Funny to think that by now they've graduated college
.
Happy New Year Emma🎉🎉
Happy new year!!
Merry
My fav movie of my life )) Can talk about each second and explain.
That's Liv Tyler.
Daughter of rock star Steven Tyler.
Lead singer of Aerosmith.
I do love your accent! Are you French-Canadian?
Emma is now a Canadian, but was born in Russia and has also
spent time in Germany; Hope this may be of help to you;
💃💃💃🎶🎧🎬🎙🍁🍁💃💃👍🙏💃💃;
I love the LOTR Movies
Since you also react to music o your other channel, Christopher Lee aka Saruman also joined Rhapsody (of Fire) a symphonic metal band as a narrator on some songs and actually also sang on one song with them! Look for MAgic of the wizard's dream (how fitting)
This is the best trilogy in the entire film history for me (second place is Kung Fu Panda trilogy (well, I don't want to count the 4th movie))
Did you notice the car in the "Farthest away from home I've ever been" background scene?
Lotr's + Emma = 😊
During the council of Elrond Gandalf simply chanted the words written on the Ring using the language of Mordor called Black Speech for the purpose of proving that the Ring is altogether Evil. Which is why Elrond pointed out never before has anyone spoken Black Speech within the Borders of Rivendell.
You said Journey so fast it sounded like Johnny. It's a really long Johnny guys. :P
23:49 the drunkard is director Peter Jackson making a Cameo appearance
"One hundred years ago" LOL Oh wait, that's obvious, you must be part Elvish !
If you liked the operatic method of the movies, you'll love this trilogy, Howard Shore dis a fantastic job giving life to it with his soundtrack.
Tolkien wrote the books as poetry and integrated songs in it too.
Nearly no one notices the horse shaped water !
So this would be part 1 of the reaction
Yes))) 👍 I hope tomorrow we can watch the rest of the part 😉😉😉

Lol😂
"Gute Besserung, Emma!"
You didn't indicate that this was only part 1 of your reaction, and, half way through watching this, I thought, "boy, is Emma gonna have to fly through the second half of this movie... too bad!" - but, not to worry... part 2 is coming...
Emma mentioned that their would be a part 2 Saturday and
invited everybody to come with and complete the journey with her
and her MAGICAL and CHARMING REACTION, looking forward to it with
great anticipation;
🙏👍💃💃💃💃🍁🍁🎬🎙🎶🎧🙏💃💃💃💃;
@@CraigDuncan-o6j Most certainly! It's just that - wouldn't it be nice if the TITLE of this video mentioned that it was PART 1 of 2??
@@splitimage137. Actually that is a great suggestion, and if Emma ever
sees this maybe she would consider taking it on board for future reference,
Thanks and Respect to you for that; 👍🙏💃💃💃💃🍁🍁🎬🎧🎶🎙🙏💃💃💃💃👩🎤💁♀🙆♀;
God Bless Peter Jackson..
why do dwarves likes axes ? because elves like trees

suggestion steven Spielberg close encounters of the third kind
Dunno if anyone has mentioned this but the hobbits are actually quite old. Frodo is in his fifties and the other hobbits are in their forties !
In the movies there were maybe a few months between Bilbo's birthday and Frodo starting out on his journey, not 17 years)
On the other hand, hobbits don't seem to live a who lot longer than humans, or Bilbo's 111 wouldn't have been considered exceptionally old.
@@glenroberts9831 Fair enough. I just didn't want anyone to get the impression that they chose to age down the hobbits for the movies.
Sam
@@NecramoniumVideo Yeeeaahh, but technically Frodo aggressively grabs it back in both cases
и т.д. и т.п.
I love you Emma 💕 xoxo

The only scene of the Extended Edition I didn't like was Isildur putting on the ring. In the theatrical version, when Bilbo put it on at his party, folks in the theater gasped along with the party crowd. It was a much more effective scene at showing the ring's power than Isildur's. Plus, Isildur's scene just didn't look right, since you can tell he was standing in front of a green screen when he put it on.
is this part 1 of 2 to this movie ?
Yes, part 2 tomorrow as mentioned by Emma at or near
the end of the Video; Get ready for a truly wonderful part 2 by the
very, very charming Emma;

Welcome to the rabbit hole of Tolkien. After this trilogy you need to watch the Hobbit trilogy.

This Film Reaction is being done in 2 parts, Emma does mention
that it is a 2 part'er near the end of the Video; Hope you enjoy it later
in the company of the WONDERFUL EMMA; 🙏💃💃💃💃🍁🍁🎧🎶🎬🎙🙏💃💃💃💃;
I think you tend to talk too much which is why you miss information. In Bree, Aragorn tells the Hobbits that the Ringwraiths are neither living or dead, yet later on Weathertop, you comment that you think they might be immortal. It's certainly not the only instance of this.
