I finally cracked the Freyr Archaic in Retold!

- Freyr is a really tough god to play, especially early game if you want to play optimally. Here is my pitch for the "perfect" Freyr archaic age!

This is beyond my ability to execute efficiently; but a very helpful guide nonetheless! It taught me to really change my mindset and prioritise starting to research these technologies much earlier than I'm used to.
I used to like Norse more before Retold, but I'm not used to having the additional Great Hall building. I miss being able to easily switch between Ulfsark/Berserk production to getting Raiding Cav or Hersirs by having them all come from the Longhouse. The additional new building and new specialist units make playing Norse less straightforward and a little overwhelming for me. 😅

Hello! I modified Iammagic's Odin Standard build where instead of making additional 2 workers on wood, I made them gather food instead. I was able to start aging up at about 3:00 and arrived in the Classical age at 4:00.
Nice! Yeah, dont take these builds as gospel. Make changes to them and see if you can make it your own to suit your style!
Soup, why not share an ox for your wood and gold? I suppose you may not need it, but it might simplify the complexity.
I really really dislike sharing ox for wood/gold! There is big walking time, and it's unreliable as most maps don't allow it..!
@@HUSKSUPPE I've noticed quite a lot of my maps have! But... I know you've played way more than me, so perhaps you're right.
Also, look at the distance in this rec, you think that's too much walking time between the gold and forest? You had tons of walking time by taking the stragglers (particularly with the second group of Woodies that stayed in wood instead of transitioning to food)
@@AoLIronmaiden It is a lot and you will have to build an ox on the woodline very early anyway! But just being able to replicate the build on every map is the deal breaker :)

I was subconsciously experimenting this concept with Freyr but haven't managed too many games yet.
My only gripe with Norse start build orders is the auto-queue gatherers from options. I think I will have to disable that in options to be honest. On paper it felt like a good thing (for all civs but norse basically) but for a dwarf start it's terrible!
ha, it's not a problem for me honestly, I always manage to build a dwarf before the automatic gatherer begins!
If you are fast enough you can build the dwarf before it queues up the gatherers. I have my tc on mouse5 and just begin to spam mouse5+w as soon as the game nearly finished loading (had to do this in aoe 2 as well, so it's not to hard for me to remember) and I get it dwarf first and then the queued gatherers.
@HUSKSUPPE yep I'm managing it now. There is enough delay between the spawns to send vills and ox to food and berserker out the other side too.
@danpower7416 I'm also 1750 in aoe2 DE but frankly I hadn't played enough retold to get the feel yet.
I'm now close to 1300 (6 wins 0 losses).

Hey bro im new here, I like your guide-BO, i see you place the blue fortress very soon, i would just recomend using that power once you have scouted your enemy maybe?, because you doing it before is like giving extra information IDK. besides for me that fortress doesnt protect many resources really. Just one question, I feel that I have a lot of gold and I'm lacking food and wood in Classical Age, did you find how to fix it?
Hey! Yeah so you can still make like 4 dwarves early classical and just put them on herdables early. The thing is your classic is so slow to get going because you need all those upgrades, so it takes a while before you actually get to spend your gold. But once your production is up, you will need those 8 dwarves!! Nice to hear you like the build, I find freyr very difficult to have succes with

Freyr better for that imo! He has access to Vidar who has the cool destructive GP, inferno, which is a really good mid-late game power spike. He requires a lot of practice though, I hope we see someone really master him

Which gods do you suggest to use this build against? Right now, 4.20 is almost considered a late advance vs certain gods.
any god, really. I sit in base and go berries and get the tower upgrade, so just have to survive the first minute or so of aggression and I will be fine..! The idea is to be super strong around the 8 min mark or so when all your upgrades are ready and you have a good army!

My dan lad i have a question. Do we attack or just small raid with that army ? cuz 2 hours ago i played loki vs freyr in ranked game and he (freyr) attacked me(loki) and i destroyed him. he thinks that im gonna all in but i didnt even click any soldiers cuz there is no reason to attack freyr in that early stage cuz of the wt upgraded asgardian hf and big ass piggy :D u know maybe freyr is bait idk :D
If I do this start with Freyr I definitely plan on attacking from 8 mins onwards! You gotta get the timing right though, and that is when you hit all your upgrades with a good amount of army behind it. Sounds like a fun game for you :D
Don't you think not having military units until 6 mins could be dangerous in a real game? Also another question, since all of your hersir are at base making the buildings, where would you put your asgardian hill fort? Because I feel like if you place it on like a second hunt or something with only 1 hersir on it opponent can come in with like a couple of hoplites for example and take it down. The build does seem incredibly clean though, will have to try it out
yeah, there's no way you get the hill fort outside of your base with this build. But if we're being real, there's no build that allows you to do that against an aggressive opponent. Freyr is just really slow to get started. I honestly think just building it at home is not a bad idea. You can get the tech that allows you to re-cast the GP again for 40 favor, which you can then use to secure gold later on if you like.
@@HUSKSUPPE yeah so update, I am not playing with the best of players right now since it's not full launch yet, but even if you get harrased a bit early, the quality of your army with full line and full armory upgrades is insane, you can just easily push out and get map control. Freyr seems pretty good, cant wait for launch tommorow!
What do you think of building second armory immediately?
nahh, haha, that's too much! You really need a lot of unit production buildings too since the line upgrades takes a long time to research too!

lol, you're right, but also notice because I'm Freyr the husbandry takes a long while to finish, so I didn't have it up just yet when I went there. But hey, good to know that you learned something from my other video! :D
