  • This video will show you how I do easy lap joints on my miter saw and how simple it is which makes it perfect if you are a beginner woodworker!
    This is an easy way to do a cross or lap joint on your miter saw. Most joints like this require a dado blade on a table saw, hand saw, or a router. For this LAP JOINT you only need a MITER SAW and a few equal pieces of wood. I do show you a trick to getting a straight cut with your miter, which can be difficult since the blade is curved. BUT NEVER FEAR - I GOT YOU BOO!
    If you are comfortable using a miter saw this is a great trick for you. I used this joint to make a few planter stands (that video is up next) and I have also used it to cut some cross pieces in tables and decorative X’s on side tables.
    Thanks for watching!

    Very cool tutorial. I want to build a router table with half laps, so I am absorbing as many tips and tricks as I can. One other time saver is to make a center finder out of a scrap piece of wood and some dowels. Works great with a pencil inserted dead center on the wood and takes the guess work and math out of the equation. Great job. Thanks.

    I’m sure you figured this out by now as this video is 2 years old but just in case you didn’t know..your miter saw has a depth stop on the right side of the blade (facing saw) it’s generally a screw with a wing nut and a flip down lever when you want to engage the depth stop to prevent you from taking full plunges when making daddo’s. That way you don’t have to worry about plunging to far.

    for a perfect and tight fit, instead of eyeballing the pencil mark, you can use a stop block and a kerfmaker or a blade thickness shim

    • @EternalHarvestDecor
      @EternalHarvestDecor  Год назад

      I don’t see why that wouldn’t work! As long as they are secure together so there isn’t any kickback it should be great!

    Hello, Can we cut in the same in Melamine sheets as well ?

  • @noway5096
    @noway5096 2 года назад +2

    If you used a larger stop block and prevented the miter arm from going down beyond a certain depth you could pull the saw out and push it through the piece of wood so the bottoms would be completely flat as they would be being cut by the apex of the blade.

    • @EternalHarvestDecor
      @EternalHarvestDecor  2 года назад

      I forgot to add that most saws have a stop mechanism that keeps it flush just as you described

  • @LeeWhitcher
    @LeeWhitcher 3 года назад +8

    Thanks for the video but you're cutting the notch incorrectly; to get a square notch it's the sliding action of the miter saw you need! The blade is circular so you set it's lowest point at the height you need and then move the blade backwards and forwards to give a square bottom to the notch.

    • @EternalHarvestDecor
      @EternalHarvestDecor  3 года назад

      Thanks for the response, actually sliding with a spacer behind the piece creates the same effect. So I suppose both ways are "correct"

    • @LeeWhitcher
      @LeeWhitcher 3 года назад +2

      @@EternalHarvestDecor maybe I'm missing something but you're sliding side to side in your video, no? I don't see how that makes the square

    • @EternalHarvestDecor
      @EternalHarvestDecor  3 года назад

      Hey I went back and looked at the video again, if you start at minute 3:59 I explain how it works. My blade goes from front to back sliding to create the notches, and then I moved the pieces from left to right after the notches are made to clean it up a bit.

      @@EternalHarvestDecor sorry but it's not clear to me... You talk about using a stop block but not sliding, and the straight cut you show looks curved still. But I don't want to argue with you... I appreciate your content so I must be being totally dumb.

    Is the purpose of the stop block is to position the piece to be cut as close the blades center as possible?

    • @EternalHarvestDecor
      @EternalHarvestDecor  3 года назад

      Yes and because you are centering the deepest part of the blade, when you slide the saw forward and back it creates a straight cut rather then curved. Hope that makes sense
