So what is Max Baer Jr. up to today and how did he become such a major star? Actually, how did he get cast as Jethro in the first place? Max Baer Jr. has certainly had an interesting life and he’s still up to interesting things today. His biopic is worth exploring and FactsVerse is proud to present it to you.
Max Baer Jr. was born on December 4, 1937, in Oakland, California. His father, Max Sr., was a boxing champion and his mother, Mary, was a homemaker. He is of German-Jewish and Scots-Irish descent. He had a well-rounded childhood and eclectic interests. He was an accomplished athlete during his teens and then went on to study Business and Philosophy at university.
Yet somehow, it was acting that became his first love. Perhaps growing up in California and not being too far away from Hollywood and the burgeoning television industry drew him in. He began his acting career after completing university and like all actors, was eager to find his big break sooner than later.
Max Baer Jr. found his breakthrough when he was cast as Jethro in The Beverly Hillbillies. This was the role that made him a star and what he’s still remembered by. He loved the role but he also felt that it constrained him and that he was typecasted.

I ESPECIALLY LOVED GRANNY. THE WHOLE SHOW WAS PRETTY GOOD.
I loved everyone on the show. Especially Granny and Jethro together
We're very happy to know that you're a fan of Granny and Jethro. Which episode is the most memorable for you?
Granny was my favorite character! She was tough... and hilarious!
(Jethro was Jed's NEPHEW, not cousin. He was the son of Pearl Clampett, Jed's sister. He also had a twin sister, Jethrine, and he played that character too!) ☺️😉
He also played Jethro's twin sister Jethrine for a year on Beverly Hillbillies.
So true! Thank you so much for bringing back memories. What other types of video would you like to see?
They were brother and sister. I don't know if it ever said they were twins.
Always enjoyed Jethro and the other cast . I still watch the Beverly Hillbillies.

I loved everyone on the Beverly hillbillies TV show.
I'm glad that he's been busy with his life and that he's enjoying his retirement. It's too bad that he was typecast as a "Jethro" which kept him from getting bigger and better acting roles. His character Jethro was funny especially when he was involved with Granny. One of my favorite shows when I was growing up.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
My favorite character on the "Beverly Hillbillies," was Jethro. I actually know someone that is about his height and thinks and talks like him too! The entire cast of the "Beverly Hillbillies" played their parts well... individually as well as in whole too.
One of our favorites too, you've got taste! What other types of video would you like to see?
Life was so easy us back then, now there no trust in our world of TV shows ... Almost everyone was a good guy ....
The Beverly was a great show. And everyone of them were such great actors they acted like hillbillies. And they look like they were having fun doing it I applaud all of them everyone of them so convincing. I know I watched a lot of episodes. It's the memories that bring the people back. How could you ever forget the Beverly Hillbillies.? And all of them we're acting like they were having a great time. Thank you for the many years of entertainment. I applaud all of you
. Where ever you are! Amen
We absolutely agree! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. Be safe and have a great day!
I liked Granny for how funny she was and it always grabbed my attention to see Max Baer Jr's name in the credits of the opening to the show for being my last name too and it did not have his with Jr. included.I'd also find out from my mom later about his Dad Max Baer Sr. of whom was the Prize Fighter. He was also played by someone in Cinderella Man and looked just like his son Max Baer Jr.
What a Great wholesome show from the good old days and it was truly funny too. We will never see these kind of shows again 🥲
We're glad to know that you love the show. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. If we may ask, which episode did you like the best?
I still watch it in the afternoon at 4pm.
Hollywood is to woke and liberal make any good shows anymore
Jethro was Jeb's nephew, not "cousin "
Tim, if you're reading a transcript, you might confront the writer(s).
I know Jethro referred to Jed as "Uncle Jed" however, Jethro's mother Pearl Bodine was Jed's cousin, which would also make Jethro and Jed cousins, and not uncle and nephew. Also, Elly refers to Pearl as "Aunt Pearl", even though they are really cousins.
Jethro called Jed uncle but his mother Pearl and Jed were cousins so that makes Jed and Jethro cousins.
I loved Elly she was beautiful inwardly and outwardly. She had a sweet innocent about her character.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
Jethro was my favorite "Hillbillies" character. Too bad they were always trying to hook Elly May up but always seemed to get in his way, even when they were trying. He still has that casino in Carson City. "Bodines".
One of our favorites too, you've got taste! What other types of video would you like to see?
I adore the whole cast and guest stars. I also love the animals on the show.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
My favorite Beverly Hillbillies episode was when Jethro wanted to be a secret agent & accidentally put blades going into his feet instead of going out on his boots 🤣. When B Hillbillies was on primetime l never missed an episode
One of our favorites too, you've got taste! What other types of video would you like to see?
All the big bowls we have are called Jethro bowls 😂. Love the show. Ella Mae was such a beautiful woman and they were all funny in their own way.
On the day Irene Ryan passed, my mom saw a Hillbillys rerun where Granny was wrestling someone only as Granny could, picking them up and spinning them like a top….
My mom postulated that it was the wrestling that killed her…
My favorite character was Miss Hathaway who was a cheerful voice of sanity in the silly world of The Beverly Hillbillies….
I still watch it. Granny, Jethro, and Miss Jane were my favourites. The show with Duke's puppies was the funniest.
This my all time favorite show .Everyone complimented each to make the show so successful. The writing and acting was absolutely great .The show gave me so much fun and joy ,and still does .. can't beat the old shows ,nothing like it on TV today
I had a crush on Elly Mae. Jethro and Granny were the funniest.
All the characters were pretty sharp. The special guests were good too.
you do know Jethro was Ellie May's cousin. He was Jed's NEPHEW. you'd think you would have gotten something that important right.
Yes - I agree. Also, the first frames in this video showing a young dark haired man with Mr Drysdale weren’t even Jethro!
Pearl and Jed were 1st cousins. Pearl was Jethro's mother. So Jed and Jethro were also cousins. As were Pearl and Elly May. I don't know why Elly called Pearl aunt and Jethro called Jed uncle.
When l was 3yrs old, my dad, a banker, got sick of the rat race in southern Ca and moved us to a chicken farm in Arkansas. When we moved back to Ca I told my class ' We were hillbillies ' and I was proud of it because of that show.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing your life story. What other types of video would you like to see?
I am just viewing this show for the very first time. I am still on season 1. It is so funny! :).
Fun stuff, who is your favorite cast by far?
I loved Granny
Us too! Who comes in at second place?
I truly liked all the characters. My real dad looked like Jethro when he was young. I loved Jed for his wise leadership of the family, Elli May for her sweet character and good looks. Granny was hillarious and so spunky.
ALL of them❣️ However, Ellie-Mae and her critters, I believe molded me into the animal loving advocate that I am today.
We remember the critters too! Thank you for the trip down memory lane. What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
I always loved that sh.ow
Are you Julie?
Do you live very close to here?

I'm sorry..... There is no one favorite. They all were great chemistry together. It was always a delight to see this;. Granny, Jeb, Ellie May, Jethro and even Duke. Who will ever forget the 'cement pond....!?!" You can't forget Mr. Driesdale and Ms.Jane. I loved them all. G*D bless them all...... Thankyou.
All he episodes of Beverly hillbillies are my favorite because every episode is funny, making laughs and it brings me back to the days when I 1st saw the Beverly hillbillies
I met and hung out at a patio table with Buddy Epson for around 10 minutes one day when they were shooting a scene in Encino. Sometimes I will bingewatch a few episodes of the hillbillies. Can't take my eyes off granny lol
Fun stuff, thanks for sharing! We're a huge fan of Granny too. Which episode is the most memorable for you?
@@FactsVerse Christmas episode has a little bit of everything
Wow. I didn't get to watch this show until somewhere mid-late 1990s. I mush enjoyed it. I didn't know nothing about Max Jr. My favorite was Elly May ❤
Born, raised and schooled all in my area of Northern California so I recognize the places mentioned of his early years.
I enjoyed each person in their own role one of the best sitcoms made me think of country coming to the big city loved it
Max Baer Sr. and brother Buddy Baer were not only boxers but perhaps better known as actors appearing in several comedy films.
😀🌺🌼🌸🦋🌺🌻🌼🌸🦋🌺🌻🌼🌸🦋🌺🌻🌼🌸🦋🌺🌻🌼🌸🦋 THEY were all my favorites & still watch them today!!!!
Some of the film footage, here, is of Max Baer Sr. (his father).
I think he was an excellent actor. I wish he would at lest do some to keep us to date.
Absolutely, we feel the same way! Thank you for sharing your sentiments and for watching our content. Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
Great show! Miss the good old days

I LOVED Granny!!
I loved the show and watched all the time
When u ask this question about the actors on a good TV Show who was your favorite, on The Beverly Hillbillies I could not single anyone out as they all had wonderful roles & played each role as if they were actually that person, this was 1 of many TV Shows that I enjoyed watching
as a 1960's child, between the TV Shows, music & clothing that was coming at the late 60's there was too much going on & I was very happy to be a part of it & would do it all over again if I could.
Thanks to progress going from VHS Tapes to DVD Discs & finding a wondering store here in Quakertown, Video Bonanza, as they sell movies & TV Shows & a wonderful woman in Colorado who also sells old movies & TV Shows, my DVD collection has really grown immensely, TV Shows I want to have R now completed, but I'm still coming up with new & old movies that will fit well within my collection.
All the cast on the Beverly hillbillies are my favorite
You're a true fan but wait, which episode appealed to you the most?
Love Max as Jethro. I still belly laugh watching the show. The writing was superior as well as the acting. Best of health and keep trucking Max!
Us too! Thank you so much for your beautiful message for Max. Which episode of the show is your favorite?
One of my favorite was Mrs. Drysdale. She was hilarious 😂
I love it Granny thinks there a possibility of Mrs. Drysdale being friends, and Mrs. Drysdale says, "absolutely not!".
Granny!! When I was little I wanted to grow up to be a cool Granny just like her (Irene Ryan). Here I am killing it. I am Granny to one grand daughter, who now calls me Gran
Greetings from England Hello world yeah one of the funniest series I've seen when it first was on tv hilarious episodes
Next to the Jethro character, the roll of Granny was my favorite character..
That's amazing

I grew up with The Beverly Hillbillies and to me they seemed normal LOL! Good Old Country Folk... loved all the characters:-)

A must watch show in the UK. Great comedy.🇬🇧
We're glad to know that you love the show. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. If we may ask, which episode did you like the best?
@@FactsVerse I don't remember specific episodes, I just loved the way they interpreted the strange world they found themselves in.
Silly little things stick in my mind, like the fancy eating table with the pot passing sticks.
Of course, as a teenage boy, Elly May was of considerable interest. 🙂🇬🇧
I believe Max Baer's father said "last one up's a sissy" when he and his opponent both hit the canvas in a world championships bout.
Goodness, Max Baer, jr was a handsome fellow as Jethro!
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
Granny was my favorite,Irene Ryan was funny always !
I have had a crush on Jethro since I was a little girl and this has not changed..
We're a big fan of Jethro too! Which episode of the show appealed to you the most?
Not sure about the helicopter scene, but that's not Max.
Jed Clampit was not the cousin of Jethro in the show as stated about the 14:37 timing mark, but the nephew of Jed
Loved them all thanks for the memories ,but have to say little more partial to Granny really kind of made the show click.
Dammit 🦫 now you jinxed it
Maex , go to the Medbeds in Georgetown TX and Palm Springs , Ca. to extend your life about 12- 15 years. Jeff
Jethrine, the only kind of drag I can laugh at. Baer the philosopher put his gifts into those roles. My children are in their twenties and they were raised on BH. We have a family friend who is a Latin Mass Catholic priest in SoCal and he also watches it. In fact he gave my children the DVD collection when they were little.
Jethro was so funny on the show
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. Which episode is the most memorable for you?
Granny was my favorite! Additionally Mr. and Mrs. Drysdale, along with Miss Hathaway. I have DVDs.
Our favorite too! Which episode of the show is the most memorable for you?
I seen the Max Houston episode with both Max and Buddy just last week on METV

The show was callef Matt Houston...not Max.

All of them were funny, it's hard to choose, but Jefro we're the funniest
Jed was my favorite character
My favorite character fro BH was Ellie May (?).

@@FactsVerse I can never pick a favorite episode of any loved program. They are all great. Joe

Us too! Which episode is the most memorable for you?
Unless I'm mistaken I'm pretty sure Uncle Jed didn't play it Jethro's "cousin" cuz he's his UNCLE!
I watched this show as a kid. My parents always said that you have to be a smart person to play a dummy like Jethro. Only intelligence could give you the knowledge of what was funny about being dumb. I guess they were right!
It was Ellie May that was Jethro’s cousin.
You say Cousin..yet Jed was his uncle??
Granny Jed,Jethro,Ellie
On the BHB although all the actors were great, I thought I liked Jethro's character the best. Then Ellie Mae,Jed,Granny; and the character of president of the bank, and Ann Hathaway ( Nancy Kulp.) Not to forget Pearl Bodine Jethro's mom. Then all of the other characters...❤️🙂👍
Jethro was the nephew of jed, not cousin.
Jethro and Granny made the show. Jethro and Granny were almost like a team who played off each other beautifully. Jethro would do something idiotic and Granny would lose her cool.
Couldn't agree more! Thank you for sharing your views on this. What is ytour most memorable episode of the show?
@@FactsVerse it was the episode where Jethro Hooked up the party line telephone and it exploded in Granny's face.
About As Sad 😞 As Knowing Betty White Was The last Remaining Cast Member Of The Golden Girls.
I wonder if he watches them often or maybe not
Rumor has it that as long as he keeps dying his hair black he won't die.
FYI Ellie May was Jethro ‘s cousin that is why they seemed to be always picking on each other. I got the impression. Ellie didn’t like having to share the household with a cousin of hers. A man as well whom she would always try to out rassle She got along better with Jethrina when she visited.
GRANNY AND JETHRO😅
Matt Houston, not Max
How old is max bear today
T he Double Naught Spy.
Granny & Jethro we’re the main funny people ….
The girl was not funny , Buddy Epson was the straight character along with the banker …. That & Mr Edd were my Dads favorite shows 😊
Well you made one big mistake. Jed and Jethro were not cousins. Jed was his uncle. Jethro was the son of Jed s sister. And had a sister named Jethrina I believe who was also played by Max Baer zjr. And their mother was played by Bea Benaderet who came from the Burns and Allen show later to play Kay Bradley on Petticoat Junction.
Sometimes there are characters in TV shows that make the show better & would be irreplaceable. If for whatever reason Max Baer had left the show or couldn't return to it & the producers had to make one of the only 3 decisions that could be made about the show &/or Jethro Bodine character. The only options I see the producers had was (1). Write Jethro character out of the show (2). Cancel the TV show (3) Try to replace Max Baer with another actor that could play Jethro character as good or better than Max Baer played Jethro. Canceling the show would have been the best option as I can't think of any actor from the past to present that could play Jethro like Max Baer. For me the Jethro bodine character made me laugh more than the other Hillbillies & Irene Ryan/granny character was a strong second as the funniest hillbilly & Granny's character/Irene Ryan would have been easier to replace with another actress but just slightly easier than replacing Jethro
Granny
Us too! Who comes in at second place?
I have no favorite actor on The Beverly Hillbillies I enjoyed them all
