Well all the new equipment would have to be maintained by specialists from the company there certain things dock mechanics can’t touch because the company has to fix
Absolutely correct. A more efficient port will generate new jobs inland at logistics facilities handling the goods coming in through the port more efficiently. However, many of those jobs are non-union jobs.
This isn’t actually true. Automation now a days is going to kill a lot more jobs than ever before. Industrial revolution never killed the blue collar worker. This will. That’s a lot of people unemployed. Think about that.

@@thatsallfolks3115 you’re guaranteed work because as a casual you’re not and you also get benefits as well as the pleasure of picking what you want to do exactly at the port. Could be anything from operating a crane to working on the ship.
@@jonathanmuro1011 is it really that hard to get in as they say?
Automation is the way to go… lower prices for the consumer and more efficient turnaround times at the terminals… a machine doesn’t need to have an hour and a half lunches, they don’t get sick or dick around for the shift to be over…. I work out of the terminals as a truck driver… if the terminals were automated, we wouldn’t be in the situation we’re in right now; with 65+ ships at anchor waiting to dock in the west coast…
They also do not pay taxes and or collect government checks when they are off because of no work. Trust me…automation is good but not to replace everyone. Not to mention your job will be gone too. Who cares if goods “might” be cheaper. Your going to have no job.
True .. these guys are lazy. No exp. got the jobs thru family. Some of them are dumb as hell. Good for flipping burgers. Which port in the world takes 7 hrs to pick up a load ? I thought we are the superpower ??😪
@AJ Dasa I’m stuck here at TTI right now… my bock is ugly. I’ve been here since 2:30pm it’s now 5:45pm and there’s about 10 trucks ahead of me…
@@thecookiedude85 sorry to here that bro. Same ole BS ports ., I m stuck here now at Trapac 😄😄
@@ajdasa6169 and tra pac is automated so what’s you’re point? Automated and still stuck there?
automation doesnt destroy jobs it changes them, just ask the guilds of germany how they felt about the industrial revolution..theyd tell you the same shit about the industrializing taking jobs, these days we know the opposite to be true. so rather than hire new technicians perhaps these shipping companies could shell out for training the old employees in new positions instead of firing them and hiring younger specialists
@@funhole26 Automation has been increasing at an ever rapid pace, yet the unemployment rate hasn't gone up.
Those unions at the port are the main reason there is so much bottle necking. You can't blame the companies for wanting to automate.

Unions doing what unions do best. Hold society back.
Yeah, because forget "people," and let's just let businesses dominate people into provity. That will make for a better world.
With all the stuff I see and hear - crane operators bringing a six pack up with them, watching someone down a whole pitcher before their shift - they can't automate fast enough. That longshore culture has got to go. Not saying machines are perfect. Also their politics are trash, but that's an aside.
Yup. Worked long enough at Long Beach ports to know that some longshoremen are POS. Feel bad for the cool ones. But automation is here, in so many industries. The 4th industrial revolution. And covid will speed up their agenda. I'm a truck driver, so still safe for now. 😎
Speak for your own experience. Port of Vancouver drug tests. No one is bringing 6packs up
@@funhole26 Well, good for Canadians. Not sure if you guys have the same teamsters union . But could be the difference
@@westcoasthustle6133 they've got driverless trucks already buddy. Ain't no one safe
@@jarroddacuycuy7435 I'm well aware of that. Not sure how an autonomous truck will do in downtown Manhattan or back into a dock with a very tight parking lot.
You handles cargos from China. Those cargos should be made in USA. Your job security and union monopoly are bloody to American workers who lost their jobs to China.
Automation isnt just about Longshoreman....its also about all the truck drivers and being removed from the Operations. As you may see truck drivers are out of their Trucks and have to stand in a specific area for their truck to be serviced.
Leave the union will set you free. If you have a cell phone, you can’t say no to automation.
Embrace the change. Maybe work at the company that makes the automated equipment, or repair and maintain the equipment. Any job that pays 3X the competitive salary because of union threats of strikes only makes people angry if the job is not getting done. There are 50 plus container ships off the coast not getting timely unloaded. Its been that way for almost a year. WTF, you want my sympathy? Why should I have to pay for 3X shipping costs to get you a higher salary. The only barrier to entry and getting this problem solved is the Union. My trucker friend says he has never realized what slow is until watching container unloading at long Beach this past year. No sympathy here, go Brandon, go automation.
That's not longshoreman's fault, that's management fault(the people that are doing the automation)😂 they built the system, not us. Your complaint of why you want to support the destruction of people's livelihood is so ignorant.

Hate unions glad Thatcher got ride off them in the eighties notice there the same over here get them out.
how did she get rid of them? what do you have against them?
Sounds like you tried to get in one and just couldn’t so now you hate them😂 live and let live
@@boilermakerboy6198 never tried to get in one never will want too. Unions are not needed since we don't need to negotiate wages since every year we get a pay raise. Go look what the unions did to the coal industry with their constant strikes.

Without unions there would of never been any form of fair wages/work environment. What you have now is because of unions fighting in the past. Don’t be so ungrateful.
