Eric is such a gifted composer. To make a soundtrack like stardew's for your first game is absurd. It sounds like it was made by a well established seasoned pro. Its honestly one of the best game soundtracks I've ever heard, and I'm not just saying that

I'm so glad RUclips decided to show me this. Eric Barone is absolutely one of the reasons I got into indie game development. I don't know if I'll ever have to grit to get into a solo project like he did, but I still decided go from a counselor's career to going back in college to learn Unity and independent video game design thanks to your influence. And now thanks to this live stream, I actually feel more confident about attempting music too. Thank you.

As a long time Reason user and casual SV fan this was phenomenal. The music was always my favorite part of the game and it should seem obvious in retrospect that it was made in Reason, but it's so far beyond that. It really goes to show how simple tools/stock sounds can create something uniquely amazing when you have the creativity. What an intelligent and humble guy. Thanks for this!

Eric is the one who got me into using Reason. Years back when I started learning about game design and composing, I already had a background of music as a pianist. But I knew little about music software and DAWs. I remember reading an interview where he mentioned what DAW he created the soundtrack in and I was playing a lot of Stardew Valley and loved it so figured I would give it a shot.
For many years, it was in the back of my mind wondering how he did some of the songs and would have loved to see the project files. With this stream, that is a long wish that has been granted. This was absolutely awesome! It didn't disappoint at all either seeing just how simple he kept things and just the full reliance on the songs just "feeling right". Not worrying about anything else.
It is too easy to get caught up in so many details and trying to get too fancy with racks, plugins and details. He is a great reminder to just focus on a good song and, if need be, worry about the rest later. Thanks for this stream!!

This was really great, thank you so much Reason Studios and Eric Barone for making it happen! I feel so... validated right now! I'm a Studio One user, and when i do my electronic based music, i mouse click on piano roll more often than not! The computer is a legitimate instrument. I play guitar, too. Twilight Zone moment: I've never sat through a music production live stream without hearing "DAW" and you never said it once! : )
For people curious, some long-ish thoughts on a couple of topics:
There are very small USB keyboards ("midi controllers") that do make input a lot easier in many circumstances. I have an AKAI LPK25, the best most reliable affordable entry level item i could find. it has tiny keys which are perfect for my slender girl fingers. I graduated to an Arturia Keystep, more features, bigger, great quality. I work in a tight space and i didn't want to get too much too soon and i honestly don't think i'll ever need another. I had found the QWERTY interface (for me in S1) tricky to set up and the midi controller took some of the stress away so i could get to making music faster.
Another great way to input is Musescore! When i want to flex my theory, i can work til i have what i want on standard notation staves and export midi files to import into my S1 session. Once in there i can edit, change, cut paste etc etc. (I worked hard to learn that theory and it's a great tool to have in the tool box!)
Compressors... more often than not, a compressor is applied to a recorded live performance of a bass, (drums, guitars, vocals, etc.) when the input is going to have a large variety of volume and attack. No live performance is ever perfect. You can use a compressor to smooth out variations in volume, but you have a lot of control about how to shape the attack and sustain which affects how the sound sits in the final mix. Many guitarists will have a compressor as part of their pedal board chains for live shows.
And, again, wholeheartedly agree, stock plugins are great, and I know I use my Studio One sample based instruments for a lot of what i do. For people interested in some other great and FREE sample library instruments.. Check out Spitfire Audio LABS.
Get out and make some music! It's (almost) as much fun as playing Stardew! : )

Oh my God this was so incredible! I always wished I could make music for fun but those softwares are so complicated and when I search online people are so technical. I never imagined we could take such a simple approach to this art. Loved every bit of this stream and I'm a bigger fan of his now.

Eric is such a down-to-earth, humble, and insightful person. I have the utmost respect for him as a programmer, musician, and person. The SDV soundtrack is amazing because it has soul. *Older games had catchier melodies because they had to compensate for the (relatively) primitive audio chips.* That influence shines through but his music isn't constrained by sample size, polyphony, or channel limits. The effects and "glitters" are the icing on the cake. I can't think of a developer who has more genuine love for his fans and work. I love the term "glitters", by the way. I always called them "fills" but his wording is more interesting
The SDV soundtrack reminds me of music I grew up listening to during the 8, 16, and 32-bit eras. A lot of tracks sound like they were influenced by Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Dragon Quest but *they have their own identity.* Modern games often suffer from soundtracks that are overly ambient, orchestral, and unmemorable (not bad music but nobody listens to them outside the game). I was surprised to hear he has no formal music theory or classical training! I assumed he was playing piano and reading music as a kid based on the production quality. Music theory can help you understand it but can also lead to constrained and artificial production, "I have to make it in G minor for... some reason!", lol
A lot of people get caught up in the technical details which is self-limiting (and sometimes elitist gate-keeping). When I started making music I felt obligated to make my own synthesizers from scratch. It just left me frustrated with half-baked ideas. I make the best sounds when I start with a solid preset and modify it's ADSR and effects to suit the music. I make my own patches but only for very specific sounds, effects, or synths. SDV proves that you can make an amazing soundtrack consisting largely of Reason presets. It's not the tool or "how technical" but *how you use it.* Plenty of blues legends made amazing and groundbreaking music on worn-out and beat-up guitars. *The most important thing is that the music sounds good.* If only I had the nerve to publicly publish any of my original music. I only show it to my friends when they express interest, lol
Thank you for having this interview and thank you, Eric, for taking the time to participate and share your work! *I loved your reaction when he showed that ethereal arpeggio was actually a percussive patch with very low attack. That put a smile on my face :)* Eric is one of the few people that I *admire* in the world as I don't like celebrity worship (the other people being my parents, brothers, and David Lynch). Although, I get the impression that praise and compliments make him uncomfortable, lol. Further proving that he's a genuinely good dude. Massive respect and *intuition is underrated!*
Haunted Chocolatier looks like it's going to be the perfect balance of new and familiar. The 3 tracks I heard are awesome! The Bee Boss music is *very* unique. It's like techno-Latin music with a buzzing synth lead. Catchy as hell and very interesting!

What gets me is, I wasn't originally interested in HC because it clearly differs from Stardew Valley which is the game I'm into. But that boss battle music not only made an impression on me but it made me interested in the game. The fact that the music alone did this is impressive, considering how rarely I follow a game's development.

I love Eric’s music in the game and I believe there’s a SV orchestra performance now 😊. I love gaming music and film soundtracks and bond with my 14 year old grandson about games. I don’t play Baldur’s Gate or similar but I watch run throughs etc. I played Super Mario when younger and the music still makes me smile. With games I think there is a music/heart/+mind connection which is kinda unique. Can’t quite put my finger on it. Anyway, I’m very grateful to Eric and all creative folk out there that fulfil this combo 🥇👏🏼.

    Really neat and inspiring share.
I definitely have the same feeling about Compressor 🤣I believe it's more important for certain kind of genre or workflow. Like sound design in electronic music and as a trimming tool for real recordings. But it would not make too much sense otherwise.
    Some tips on using Reverb:
You would always want to check your reverb amount on headphone, because it tends to exaggerate the effect, while using speakers would down play it. Same goes to the panning and stereo stuff.

Thank you for enabling things like this with Reason! I have always been on a music class here in Finland and I am currently on my first music high school year so I am 16 yo. I didn't earlier no how composing nowadays really worked but only watching Eric and you talk with the software I became interested of composing myself. You know I just usually make those little songs but don't really mark them down anywhere. Now I realized I could actually make music with practise with the software! A new customer in a few years at least! I live in Finland so I'll go to army training after high school but after that I promise I will start composing!
