Lewis gun was air cooled not water, you are mixing it up with the vickers
Foxboro the air version had a water jacket I believe he got it mixed up for the air based variation
@@spartan4576 There was never a water cooled Lewis gun.
Lewis gun used both cooling systems
@@Justin-zi5io Nope. Just air cooling (other than the very early prototypes, where it didn't work well). The ground guns had a shrouded aluminium finned heat exchanger around the barrel (a rather clever design that used the muzzle blast to suck air through), the later aircraft guns did away with this and just used slipstream cooling.
@@Justin-zi5io watch the C&Rsenal video on the Lewis gun. They were NEVER water cooled. Air cooled only.
there are many other star wars blaster made out of real life guns for example
Han Solo's DL-44 is the Mauser C96
Leia's blaster is a .22LR target pistol
The rebel A280 blaster rifle is made of the StG 44
Jyn Erso's blaster is the P-08 Luger
Ye but these guns are only the galactic empires weapons
I like how the games are adding more weapons inspired by real life guns. Jyn Erso's blaster being a P08 Luger and the top sniper rifle in Battlefront 2 is clearly a Barrett M82.
Yo goated
wtf is this thread
@@shockwave6213 The A280 in Battlefront 2 is also an AR-15. It has a Colt Buffer tube stock, AR pistol grip, and the AR-15 top and lower reciever
"Too complicated." I hear you have never heard of Swiss weapons.
De Du ikr if a country speaks german its magically god at anything
@@thetrueakamaru7 ye we germans are best
Jakob Schumacher in second grade do you learn to assemble a bmw?
@@thetrueakamaru7 Almost.
:D
Before WW2 Rheinmetall owned Solothurn company in Swiss to develop weapons for them
Some real-life similarities are so real to the point of being ridicolous. Just take a look at Dengar's gun: A perfect untouched MG-42 without a single mod. In some star wars guns you can clearly see the spent-cases ejection port or the ammo feeding box in either side of the gun. its ridicolous but fun lol
When these films were made nobody assumed people were going to watch them and rewatch them countless of times and notice all the flaws, mistakes and obvious props. The character you mention is barely on screen for 2-3 seconds so I'm amazed somebody would notice him let alone his gun. I believe the film makers were being pragmatical. Rather than making plasticky looking "laser guns" they wisely decided to use old WWI and WWII weapons used for previous war films, just take bits and pieces off, add a few "space mods" and voila, you've got yourself a realistic looking weapon. As an added bonus the weapons seem to have been manufactured for human use (as in ergonomic design) as opposed to the often oversized and utterly non-ergonomic laser guns used in other sci fi films (both then and today) by prop makers who clearly put "amazing look" before "practical looking" and know nothing about guns.
Besides. Back in 1977, 1980, 1983 these weapons were already out of use and antiquities nobody used in their military so nobody were going to recognize them on the screen. Well, unless they were WWI or WWII veterans but those weren't going to watch Star Wars. It was mostly kids and their parents (baby boomers born after WWII) who watched Star Wars. Older people often and usually find sci fi and space adventures "silly fantasies" and "for little kids" (they have a point actually).
"In some star wars guns you can clearly see the spent-cases ejection port or the ammo feeding box in either side of the gun" Yes. Today. On a HD 65 inch tv. But back then you either watched it in the movie theater once, saw it again with a re-release or watched it on some old CRT tv. Kids way into the late 80's often just had 14-18 inch tv's for Nintendo consoles and to watch tv. All those details you mention weren't visible at all. The image wasn't sharp enough and the the screen wasn't large enough.
Also, there was no internet back then so the only people who recognized those guns were people who had an interest in them and read books/magazines about weapons. They were always a minority.
@@jamesshunt5123 You,re understimating the people,s general culture. Majority of people that saw Star Wars movies around the globe in the 70,s and 80,s ( especially in Europe ) were teenagers and adults that were related to ww2 veterans. Some real world weapons like the german MG 42 and the British Sterling sub machinegun ( both used as props to stormtroopers blasters ) are still used today, let alone in the 80,s... So of course there were people back in the day that recognized those guns and talked: " Hey, my father used to carry that big gun around in 1942 ", how come that weapon its being used in this sci-fi movie"??
- Imagine yourself watching a modern sci-fi movie with 3 miles long space ships and battles in space, but the ground soldiers used M-16,s and Ak-74,s shooting lasers... Plenty of people back in the day thought it was a silly move. In fact there are plenty of SW forums with articles covering those details ( why star war movies used real guns for blasters? ). People asked questions, and not a minority.
Today we reached an answer: and that answer is that real world guns used as props in a star wars movie helped reach a sense of "realism". But in the 80,s plenty of people thought it was silly.
valken 38x, literally semi automatic sniper mg42
pretty sure it s a mg34 but yeah
No, Lewis guns are air cooled. They were the first generation of air cooled light machine guns. Unfortunately, the British Army at first used them in a static role at first, until the Canadian Army used them in a mobile support role on the Western Front in the Great War.
Yep, what it looks like a water jacket is just a sleeve covering an aluminum heatsink or radiator. It uses the forced air cooling principle in where the muzzle blast of each shot creates a vacuum effect that sucks the heat trapped in the heasink and expels it out off the gun. The barrel sleeve also acts as a flash hider as it protrudes farther than the barrel's muzzle.
the Lewis was not so "light" and weight near twice the weight from a Chauchat ...The Hotchkiss portable (8mm Lebel) was much better (but not lighter) than the Lewis and much faster to load (strips), but was more expansive...
these props aren't "based" on these weapons, they ARE those weapons modified
They can also be said to be based on the weapon given that the weapon physically serves as the base of the prop.
^^^
wait what
@@AdamSL3 the weapons on the original set of Star wars were Ashley modified to look different world war 2 weapons that actually shot blanks🤠
@Jimmie Toyne watching the behind the scenes of those scenes is really cool

Everyone! He gets it!
*The Lewis Gun is watern't!*
In Rouge One you can pause the screen and literally see rebels using normal M4s with just a bunch of accessories on the rails, they even left on the selector switch and and the LE stock, they just modded the upper receiver a little bit
Mike T yup, that annoy me to no end!
SonsOfLorgar why? I thought it looked sick gave the film a little more balls rather than having corny looking blasters in the prequels
IT'S A MOVIE...
Wait they made a star wars movie named after a type of makeup? By the Gods does disney have no shame? Its Rogue.... not Rouge...
runlarryrun77 okay. Why are you randomly yelling that.
There's no "water" in the shroud of the Lewis gun... rather it was for forced air draft cooling. It's funny to think of how the gun's functionality would be dramatically changed if you were forced to carry a tank of water with this weapon whenever using it. xD
The Lewis gun was NOT water-cooled.
It was originally, in WWII they abandoned it.
It was in world war one
@@CallanElliott Look up C&Arsenal on youtube they have a houer long video about the levisgun. It was never water cooled. Thats why it was a LIGHT mashinegun. The shroud covered aluminium finns on the barrel. when fired air would flow through the shroud. to cool the barrel.

the lewis gun isnt watercooled. its the first mg to be aircooled
Raik Barczynski this is wrong. It wasn't the first aircooled MG. There where many before it. I think the first one was the nicknamed 'potato digger' but I'm not sure. But it was not the Lewis Gun
all of the first gen machine guns were air cooled. water cooled was introduced in second gen machine guns and 3rd gen machine guns were air cooled but developed quick change barrels
KeinNameLp yes it was.The potato digger was a john browning design. It was not man portable though. The lewis gun was.
thunberbolt two because the Lewis Gun was portable it doesn't mean it's the first aircooled MG.
Thank you!
I really like how star wars used old real life stuff as props
The Lewis Gun's shroud acts as a vacuum to bring in cool air to cool the barrel
I was curious about what inspired Boba Fett's EE-3 blaster
Olivia as I know it's based on a single action Revolver like those in the Western Movies. Boba Fett was supposed to be the Clint Eastwood of Star Wars ^^
I think clint eastwood shouldve been boba fett
A webley flare gun ;)
A British flare gun that was used in ww1
EE-3 Carbine rifle
Lewis gun didn't have the shroud filled with water. Rather, the aluminium shroud directed the blast forward, entraining air to flow along the barrel, providing some cooling.
Han's pistol is a C96 Mauser, in case anyone cared.
Liam Smith C96 is love
KeinNameLP I prefer the webley mk VI
TheWorkingKirk Thats a Revolver no semi Auto Pistol :D
KeinNameLP yeah I know I didn't know it was a semi auto only convo : ) but it's a damn good revolver but if we're talking old semi autos I'd say the Luger po8
TheWorkingKirk yea, the Webley is nice ^^ and Luger is awesome but I would always prefer a C96 :D I just like that one more ^^
The lewis gun shroud is actually not filled with water. It is air cooled. The gases escaping the end of the barrel create a pressure differential or something, meaning that air is drawn in from the back of the shroud and run over the barrel, cooling it.
small error here. The Lewis gun was air cooled, pulling air thru an aluminum shroud with every shot.
Earlier designs had a water jacket around them so stop sprouting your fucking lies
Congrats on getting a sponsor! So glad you guys can make star wars content without getting flagged!
thank you!
Fletcher .K yeah RUclips doesn't really like gun videos, so they don't like uploaders monetize them. It's stupid.
the lewis gun water cooled, it had radiator fins that basicly forced cold air though when fired, the first water cooled machine gun was the maxim gun
bitchfacedmgee THANK YOU! I KNEW IT WATER COOLED
5:36 The Lewis gun's shroud wasn't filled with water, it used a forced air cooling system in which the barrel is surrounded by large fins (some can be seen at the base of the shroud and below the magazine). Essentially the fins would heat up along with the air surrounding them in the shroud, the hot air would vent out at the ends of the shroud and allowing cooler air to enter.
Lewis gun was air cooled not water cooled. The shroud covered lightweight aluminum fins, meant to help with the airflow.
I love how the Empire, which is inspired by Nazi Germany, uses mostly weapons based on British guns, and, as we'll see next episode, the Alliance, who seems to draw inspiration from the Americans during our revolution, uses a fair number of weapons based on German guns
Also the MG-42 was better than the MG-34 and the nickname that the allies gave the MG-42 was Hilter buzz saws it's fire rate was was around 1200 to 1500 rounds a minute
Actually some prefered the 34's ability for sustained fire over the sheer output of the 42. It was used on planes and tanks because you where restricted in the amount of ammo you could carry and resupplying was difficult. It was also used to more accurately engage at longer distances over the 42 which actually didn't kill as many allied or soviet troops during the war as other small arms.
crplsteve But you have to think of Psychological warfare that the MG-42 makes that why it's nickname Hitler's buzz saw because of the sound it's make when firing and it was cheaper and easier to produce than the MG-34
A and G productions yes but the 34 was capable of much more than the 42. Some mashing gun crews would actually use the double trigger of the mg34 to trick infantry in believing they where just a rifle squad but when they got to close, the Germans let it rip. The mg42 is good but you must remember that the only reason it was made, was to find a cheep alternative to the superior 34.
The quality of the 34 was superb compared to the 42
The MG34 was far more expensive to make and barrel changes required tools in order to do it. This makes it easier to deliver sustained rate of fire. Plus most infantry MG42s were slowed down to 950rpm which isn't much faster than the mg34.
I remember when my family saw A New Hope, ,my dad (who had spent a short amount of time in the British Army during the 70's) telling me that the stormtrooper blaster looked like a Sterling SMG.
It was a nice weapon, highly recognizable, especially if you used it. I met it as the SMG 9mm C1 and stared at it for awhile then thought I knew I had seen it somewhere before, then smiled and said pew pew pew take that you pesky stormtrooper. Good times
as someone else here has said, the lewis gun was not water cooled instead it was air cooled. you can see part of the fins that would cause the air to rush over the barrel inside the sleeve
E-11 blaster
Dc15 is good on a big battlefield but just too large for cqb on a star destroyer
Generation Tech which is why DC-15Ss exist
Los!
Misael Ramirez E-11> DC-15
Why? My time using them as Kyle Katarn.
Not if you're a commando and CQB is life then you'd take the E-11 over the DC-15 any day of the week. But I'd choose the EE-3.
the Lewis Gun was never filled with water that was an older varient made by lewis himself, the one used during ww1 was air cooled.
There were a couple of cool uses for the Lewis gun on WWI aircraft. For fighter aircraft they were usually mounted on the top of the upper wing on something called a "Foster mount". This negated the use of synchronizer gear which were notoriously prone to jamming when they first appeared. They were replaced with the more reliable interrupter gear later in the war. Since the Lewis fired above the propeller arch it functioned like any regular machine gun. The Foster mount however gave the pilot some additional advantages too. For one this mount meant that the Lewis gun could be slide down into the cockpit in a vertical position since the slide was curved. This in turn meant that the pilot could reload the gun in mid-air and also clear stoppages. This was never an option with the belt-fed water cooled machine guns like Vickers. The Foster mount also gave the pilot the opportunity to fire at enemy aircraft from an angle and the famous ace Albert Ball downed several German aircraft by flying under them, sliding the Lewis down the Foster mount and firing the Lewis vertically into the belly of the enemy aircraft.
Another bonus was that if the pilot was forced to land his damaged aircraft in enemy held territory he could remove the Lewis from the top of the wing and use it as any other light machine gun while he tried to make himself back to his own lines. For those pilots who had water-cooled belt-fed machine guns they had to do with their service revolvers or pistols...
FYI, the shroud on the Lewis gun did not contain water, it was a purely air cooled weapon. The shroud covered a series of fins which acted as a heat sink and the weapon was designed so that every time it fired it drew air into the shroud and over the fins thus cooling the barrel.
Tutorial how to make weapon in star wars:
1. First, grab an actual real life gun
2. Remove the magazine
3. Done, you just made a star wars weapon
Ummm! The Lewis Gun is air cooled. Visit Ian ' s channel (Forgotten Weapons). There are numerous 'examinations' reviews and discussions about ... well ... firearms.
Interesting fact: The blasters used by the Tantive IV at the beginning of Ep. 4 are also made from Sterling SMG castings.
Also fun fact in episode 7 when Han, Finn, Rey, and BB8 are walking into Maz Kanata's castle one of the aliens is holding a rifle based off of the Barrett M82/M107 .50 caliber sniper rifle
So basically it’s just real guns without magazines and clips and modified
Am I the only one who thinks the original scene with blanks sounds cool?
yes
no
4:31 By having working Sterling SMGs firing blanks, it probably helped the actors with the scene. You can see at 3:25 that some of the Rebels are subtly flinching and ducking to avoid getting hit by blaster fire. The movements look to natural to be scripted.
Star Wars is a beautiful mix of ww1, ww2, samurais, and Futuristic tech, love it
I just love these Star Wars-real life vids, keep up the good work👊
Hey alan you guys should do more videos based on the old republic era if possible. Alot of people including me are big fans of that. Thanks for being such an awesome host 👌🏻
I’d like to see a Jedi try to deflect actual bullets
Thanks for sharing this too, "Star Wars" makes much more sense now
Chuckled when the guy said the Lewis gun was water cooled
A fellow guardian I see
The Lewis Gun is air cooled not water cooled, C&Rsenal did an awesome video on it
That's later versions, the original was water cooled as it was easy to supply with water in the trenches.
The Lewis gun actually is an air cooled gun, not water cooled. The muzzle blast sucked air through the shroud which "breezed past" the barrel and cooled it. You can look up Lewis MG animation to see how it works.
Love the channel, by the way!
Whenever I see the T-21 on screen or in a game I always say to myself: "that man is holding a Lewis gun"
The DLT-19 Screams MG-42!!! At me.
The MG-42 could reach higher than 900 rounds a minute.
Its a MG34, Note the round barrel shape where as the 42 has a more square design. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MG_34 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MG_42. The 34 only had a 900rpm but this made it much more accurate and was used on tanks and planes instead of the 42 due to its better ammo consumption rate.
You can always tell the different by looking at the barrel. The MG-42 has a distinct square shape to the barrel shroud, where as the MG-34 had a rounder, and thinner barrel and accompanying shroud. As crplsteve already said, but felt like adding my two cents in as well.
Also, fun fact. As well as the better ammo conservation of the MG-34, because of the quick change barrel mechanism on the MG-42, this made it (the MG-42 that is) basically unusable in tanks, since you couldn't then change the barrel inside the tank. This is why even later 1944 tanks still had the MG-34 in it, because what tank crew wants to jump out of their (relatively) safe box, to change the barrel of a MG-42, when they can do it safely inside like with the MG-34?
Breezy Joebuz yep
Nah man, the Lewis Gun was air cooled. Great video though!

Si-Wo revolutions per minute... get it... cuz it was revo- nvmnd
Si-Wo he mentioned the MG 34 RPM, not the 42, but the 42 was a beast
Si-Wo 34,42? 34,42? 34,42????
Some German infantry had mg42s that we capable of 1400 rpm+
The theoretical firerate was 1500rpm. Not like this one guy said that some where capable of, they all where because they all where the same
I would love to see one of these on the many other Star Wars blasters. For instance, the shotgun blaster (For the life of me, can't remember what it's called) in SW:BF1 EA is basically what appears to be a cut off Mosin with a suppressor attached to the muzzle.
One thing that was sorely missing in this video was Han Solo's iconic DL-44 blaster pistol, based on the equally iconic Mauser C96 "Broomhandle" gun (just with an added scope and muzzle brake)
Let C3PO replace the ai or algorithms of RUclips, I wonder what content could be uploaded.

I like how the Star Wars prop guys used old ww2 weapons in there design for the movies weapons. Really good job!
The Lewis light machine gun was quite successful for its day it's no wonder it would be repeated in a galaxy a long long time ago, far far away.
The Lewis Gun was actually air cooled.
This dude is cooler that my mom
The Lewis gun's cooling jacket isn't filled with water, it has cooling fins inside and the muzzle blast sucks cool air through the back of the shroud
I built my E11 from an old 3tier floor lamp - these are the ones with the halogen lamp up top and it’s three pieces of tubing double threaded together... they are the perfect length to make an E 11 blaster. The only thing that’s not a found object transformation is the pistol grip that I picked up at a gun show... everything else has been hand made from scrap and all metal so that it feels real. I have to finish the scope the trigger and the battery pack and counter then it’s ready for cosplay up close.

lewis gun was not water cooled it was supposed to be air cooled but it turned out to be not very effective. and the ones used on aircraft had not shroud.
Bryn Finlayson the Lewis Gun was effective gun. A portable machine gun in 303 British it’s better than the Vickers
Correction, the Lewis gun was air cooled. The shroud was designed to be more like a stovepipe and get air to flow through the gun for improved cooling. You can find a in depth history on the Lewis gun over at C&Rsenal.
6:43 Technically, those were belt canisters, not drum magazines.
Dude you are a very good narrator. You should start another channel dedicated to military tech and tactics using the same format as GT.
Travis Knaus not with all the factual errors he did in this video as it's kinda representative of his side-topic research...
Yes, my teeth ground every time he said "tripod" when he should have said "bi-pod". I don't think he looked at the pictures of the weapons. Tripods are mounted at the center of mass of the weapon, and the gunner pivots the entire weapon around it. They are used for heavy guns. Bi-pods are mounted near the front end of the barrel, and are used to support the weight of the barrel. None of the weapons shown in the video are attached to tripods.
+Village CatDad Exactly! And did he say the shroud of he LEWIS gun was filled with *water*? It might not be his fault but I'm amazed nobody caught that during editing.
Actually at 6:40 you see an MG34 mounted on a tripod, and still have it´s bipod on as well.
What about the DL-44 heavy blaster pistol (Han solo's gun) or the EE-3 carbine rifle (Boba Fett's gun)
great show guys- Thanks Topps!

LEWIS GUS IS AIR COOLED
The Lewis gun was air cooled, not water cooled. The shroud over the barrel is not a water jacket, just a shroud to prevent hands from touching the hot barrel.
Thanks TOPS and Generation Tech!
So that’s a new loophole: automatic slug throwers are Jedi killers.
The one you showed the death troopers holding was a dlt-19D
Which is also still a dressed up MG-34
At first had my doubts on this video but now watching it I'm actually not surprised seeing as World War 2 influenced much of the middle Original Trilogy.
The E-web repeating blaster is a lot like the T21 Blaster but is much larger and can probably do a lot more damage too, as it is able to take down tie fighters with only a few shots and the beams are much larger. Also the Disruptor rifle is a very dangerous blaster too, as it charges up it releases a shot that is even more hot then the usual heat of a regular blaster and once it hits something it pretty much turns it to ash and anything or anyone around it.
What about the DL44 and the ca87 being based of ww1 guns
King_Wampa the DL44 is based of the mauser c96
NANO gaming765 I know that the ca87 is another example from Star Wars bro😂

Digital versions just feel so impersonal, especially to old timers like me lucky enough that grew up with the real deal
BTW 4:20 if you're lucky enough to own one of the old VHS copies of ANH - before Lucas started fucking with it - and you listen VERY carefully, you can here the crack of the blanks over the sound effects of the weapon
I totally agree on what you said about the cards, digital cards in some app just isn’t the same.
I own a VHS copy. I need to go listen for that.
The Lewis gun was air cooled, the shrowd covers aluminum fins to dissapate heat, those fins stick out the back of the shrowd. Firing draws air from the back of weapon forward across the fins. A water cooled one would be to heavy to carry.
4:46, At him mentioning he thought this was the most badass stormtrooper, I started to imagine this scene set to "Gangsta's Never Change" by Kairos
Hey Allen your personal thought who would win in a fight the republic vs the vang
+Zyruss Villarreal clone wars republic? I don't know the yuuzhan vong did a pretty good job terrorizing the new republic. But I do think the clone army was the most efficient and professional military of all eras. It would be up to how fast they could clone more soldiers. If the yuuzhan vong were able to make some kind of biological weapon to target the clones that would be disastrous. Also the GAR navy would get wrecked if it didn't develop some larger capital ships. On the other hand if the separatist joined the republic I think their droids would be perfect against Yuuzhan Vong

And first comment
After studying WWI extensively and learning about the weapons they used I recall watching the Star Wars Episode IV Special Edition later and as soon as I saw the Stormtrooper I thought:"He is carrying a Lewis Gun". It's unmistakable with its large cooling barrel. I reckon that when they shot Star Wars in the mid 70's most of these old guns were since long phased out so unless you saw WWI and WWII vets into the theaters in 1977 (unlikely) , regular people wouldn't recognize these guns.
When you watch star wars and play airsoft and you think you know everything about WW2 history. You are this guy^
