What a great mental health video. I suffered a stroke last year due to massive stress from work. Now that I can't work, I am starting to paint miniatures, and it is a stress reliever and gives me something to be productive on. I love that you went to the U.P. when I lived in Michigan, I never visited it. I took my family a few years ago and fell in love with the area.

Been to the U.P. once. Was a trucker at the time, delivering a trailer-full of ribs to Plath's Meats in Rogers City. Hard to forget such an awesome experience as that Christmas Eve drop-off. The guys loaded me down with smoked meat on my way out.

It sucks that my fav bit of the process is the construction of the mini itself. Been strengthening my painting skills but nothing beats the joy of posing minis and gluing things down :)
Honestly I’ve been enjoying building and making bases / dioramas more that painting lately. It’s a whole other joyful part of the hobby. I love it! I know people who don’t paint, but just make conversions. Nothing wrong with that. :)
This is something I am dealing with right now as I procrastinate on getting a video finished up for tomorrow. Not sure how you deal with it, but for me I find that often I need to "push through" to get content out there, and then immediately jump into the next project/video because "I just have to keep putting out new videos to grow on RUclips..." Its a vicious cycle. I've got no solutions to this myself, but wanted to thank you for putting this out there! There is a massive mental aspect to this hobby that isn't often talked about.
I feel the same sometimes. I think the thing yo remember is, put you first. If you are struggling, be real about it. The video can wait. People will understand and if they don’t, they aren’t worth your time and effort. Your content should be something you want to see and enjoy. And the people who continue to support you through that are what matters. The reality is that effort doesn’t always reap reward on social platforms. Plenty of talented people never see the light they deserve. It’s a terrible mental game. So don’t beat yourself up trying to battle it. 💚

This is a great video about motivation and burnout in general. In my case it's not a hobby, it's my work (developing a pc game). I've reached many of the same conclusions (focus on short goals, don't chase perfection, breaks), but I haven't been able to bring myself to taking more than a couple days off every now and again despite knowing a good break is probably going to be amazing for refreshing my mind. Seeing someone else talk about it has me considering it a bit more seriously.
I feel this! It’s hard for me to take breaks too because my hobby is also my career but you gotta force yourself to do it. Self care in many forms is hard to do sometimes. 💚
If I was making videos of doing my mini painting hobby I would for sure get burned out. Allowing myself to go weeks on weeks off in painting is what keeps me sticking with it for years
I enjoyed the layout of this video, casual and also talking about the same things many of us hobby people struggle with. For me if I'm slogging through a commission that I'm not inspired by as much as some other I'll get a hold of friends and we'll paint together as a mental break. You still get it done but good company helps.

I pretty much hit hobby burn out a while ago, after painting so many minis for other people, getting no pleasure out of what I was doing due to constant time limits, limited colour schemes, and pretty much painting the same thing over and over again. So then I decided to drop my painting service for a while, bought the new Zombicide Dead & Alive game (Including their Kickstarter sets from Ebay, which cost a small fortune, but proved to be more than worth it) along with all the expansions, extra figure sets and other bits and pieces, and just settled down to painting them at my own speed. I'm now fired up again, loving the hobby and painting better than I have in a long time. Just stepping away from the regular/popular games and minis has changed a lot for me, and now I feel like I did as a kid again, when I first started out in the hobby, over 50 years ago, collecting for myself, painting what I want to paint, and just relaxing back into the hobby and under no pressure to keep to a time limit/limited palette or how many points I need to finish before the next gaming session. I also took time to get out for walks, sitting by the river watching the fowls (Ducks and swans), or just simply going to the library and reading a book for a while in peace and quiet. Sometimes, taking a step back from al the pressure works wonders, and swapping your usual games for something you've never tried before can bring a whole new energy you thought lost back into yourself. Love your channel Zambies, and so happy to see you back and refreshed after your break :-)

MS_Paints just did a video on redoing his shop, and I'm redoing mine right now. So much piled up, wasn't feeling the love. You're right, sorting it all out really is really making me feel like doing stuff again, a good solid "cleansing purge". Keep up the good work!!!
I have a similar issue to you… multiple projects on the go. I have started to screw that down… one game project and one “fun” project at the same time. It’s quite a mental drain to be creative so we need to look after our head space and yes work space (my desk needs a tidy up… so I’ll get on with that now)
I have been coming back to projects and finishing them. Years later. You can do it. Sometimes starting and finishing and entire project first. Then choosing and old project to finish. I finished some 5 or 6 year old projects recently. Then started a new one. Then fished half of a 10 year long project. I actually finished painting a painting the Orks from the 6th Edition WHFB Starter from 2000, and a giant from that time. Built and primed, sat in a box for 2 decades. Finished, playable for a variety of games. It can be done. You can push through, sometimes. It's hard! I paint to play. And still paint to good for my own mental health, little soldiers I can barely see anymore.
I know what you mean about too many projects on the go. My wife likes to say 'if a job's worth doing, it's worth doing badly'. The jist is to get stuff done! Thanks for the video
oh nice, I;d love those Kroot. I just bought a bunch of Tau recently, as fancy doing an army. I always seen my Tau army as having Kroot and Vespid's though, it's shame these minis have mostly not been updated for a very long time. That Killteam has nice Kroot in it at least, but that's just 1 x squad, I reckon you'd want at least x 2. For Vespid I found some 3rd party stuff I like, but figured I'd be better off just buying a 3d printer than paying top prices for them from the company with the design rights (they do look top quality though, mind) 3D printer will have to wait though, much like the airbrush. Minis always come first, and it's a new edition of 40k and lots of exciting ideas to try. Super heavy armies are awesome now, Monster mash, undivided Chaos-Daemons looks like the dream army, with 6 centre piece models in it. I've been wanting the excuse to get some Greater daemons for a while, but always thought they're the last thing you get for an army... well if your full army is greater daemons, then you have to start somewhere
Yeah, I love the kroot models from the kill team box but agree some models could benefit from an update. 3D printing is awesome but can be a whole only hobby. Sounds like you have a good plan of attack!
I have two painting projects going on at once ATM, Oathsworn and Etherfields, I take breaks from painting for weeks at a time and switch between the two, rather than worry about getting it done quickly.
I used to paint a full army for a local tournament every year over 2-3 months. And I would burn out every year, and it would be months before I could look at minis again. What I do now is make painting a part of my routine. I spend an hours hobbying when I come home from work, just so I am keeping up progress. My two days off, I do not Hobby, even when I want to. Another thing I do is break up all my projects. Like, I painted Ultramarins the last two weeks. This week, I have been working on Bugs, next week, I am thinking of working on Admech or my Homebrew Marine Chapter. And then,every so often, I do a big project that I give myself a break from painting after I do it. Like,when I painted Magnus for a friend, and Angron for myself, I took a couple weeks off painting to regain creative energy.
Here’s a little tip about sniping models if you don’t want to lose pieces . Put bit of sticky tack where you are cutting with a extra it will hold the part to the sprue and you won’t lose them. Sticky tack is a pretty useful thing besides helping with cutting you can use is and a pill bottle as a painting handle or you can you it to cover parts that you are painting so it doesn’t get paint where you don’t want it. I’m sure there are other uses for it that I can’t think of but those are the tips I know of.

A few weeks ago I started a battalion for turnip28, and it's been a long time since I was so excited to start kitbashing and painting. I don't stop getting new ideas that are more and more twisted and fun. very liberating setting
One of the things that contributed to my hobby burnout was having so many unfinished minis on my table. So what I did was finish those, which didn't take long, and then moved on to what I was working on originally.
I got burn out from trying to keep up and buy everything for a couple armies. But in retrospect it was a bad idea. It can be difficult to find the motivation to build and finish certain models that you don't really like. I've decided to only buy or take on projects that I really wanted to do and rid myself of my pile of shame. Like the odd warband or hero that won't serve me much, or bad models that aren't as cool in my army and will probably be shelved anyway.
Whats the diffrence between Kill Team. Necrumanda and Combat Patrol ? I know they are smaller skirmish like games comapred to warhammer 40k. Thats all I know. O cheaper to get into table top hobbie as well, Anyone please let me know
I’ve been mostly on the AoS side of Warhammer and just started getting into 40k, so I’m sure someone else can do a better job of explaining but I’ll give it a try haha. To my understanding Combat Patrol is like 40k lite. So it will have the most models and biggest board / terrain needed compared to the others. Kill team is like the 40k version of Warcry. Which has branched out more on it’s own rule set from 40k and is smaller scale than Combat Patrol. Both of them are still in the 40k settling and models from there can be used. Necromunda is on the same scale size as Kill Team. But it has its own models separate from 40k. I seems more complex than kill team but has more customization options. All games are sci fi but Necromunda gives me more cyberpunk / space cowboy vibes. So if you want something smaller scale and cheaper, KT or Necromunda are the choice. If you already have 40k models that you can use, then you can try KT. But if you are starting fresh and like converting / fighter options, try Necromunda. Hope this helps!
I’ve been in Alaska for a little while now but watching a bunch of RUclips I realize how many people are from Michigan I was born in traverse city but lived in the up for along time I’ve been to that beach you were on and the sculpture park is a place I’ve drove by hundreds of times
I just like to try something similar but new. After building Gundam Kits and later Mecha Musume (Robot Girls) from about 2016-2022 I moved on to 40k. Ultra Marines specifically at first. Now I just change armies when I get bored with any of them. So far I've done UM, Death Guard, Custodes and now Chaos Knights. Also Stormcast Eternals just for fun.
That's why I tend to stick to skirmish size games. I don't feel as bad collecting 100 different small armies instead of one huge one. haha, it makes sense in my head.
I did something similar. Took a two week vacation. I didn't bring and minis or paint. Got into Pokemon TCG and beat 3 video games 😂haven't played games in so long cause I was always working on something.
Just a heads up Zam, the left over parts from the Kroot kit fit the older Kroot warriors bodies.. if you want to make almost all the variations. The grenadier needs a bit of extra bashing
I think often folks in our hobby forget the simplest truth: if your hobby stops being enjoyable then it’s not a hobby anymore. Piles of shame, last minute stress painting, frustration comparing yourself to award winning artists; is that how you want to spend your leisure time? Hobbies are meant to reduce stress not exacerbate it. With adhd I understand about short attention spans. But I’m just curious because one of the common traits of adhd is exclusive hyper focus on a single thing. It’s how I get any hobby projects done. Does Zambies, or other short attention span folks, not have that occasionally useful flaw?

Yeah, when you make it your career, it's not as easy to take breaks. Make too much for content stuff and you forget to enjoy the hobby for yourself.

I took a few years myself but it was much needed. Now im having fun again have support and the community has gotten so much better.
yeah! I think a lot of us feel guilty for taking breaks, but I'm here to say, its okay not to hobby haha.
The "done" vs "Finished" is definitely a good way to differentiate projects.

Definitely a good way to go. I often treat myself to fun projects like busts after I’ve finished my batch patching. Gotta mix it up.

One of the things that contributed to my hobby burnout was having so many unfinished minis on my table. So what I did was finish those, which didn't take long, and then moved on to what I was working on originally.
Yup! It starts to be like clutter. Gotta clean it up.
I got burn out from trying to keep up and buy everything for a couple armies. But in retrospect it was a bad idea. It can be difficult to find the motivation to build and finish certain models that you don't really like. I've decided to only buy or take on projects that I really wanted to do and rid myself of my pile of shame. Like the odd warband or hero that won't serve me much, or bad models that aren't as cool in my army and will probably be shelved anyway.
That's a good idea. I also put a pause on buying any miniatures I don't need for now.

Whats the diffrence between Kill Team. Necrumanda and Combat Patrol ? I know they are smaller skirmish like games comapred to warhammer 40k. Thats all I know. O cheaper to get into table top hobbie as well, Anyone please let me know
I’ve been mostly on the AoS side of Warhammer and just started getting into 40k, so I’m sure someone else can do a better job of explaining but I’ll give it a try haha.
To my understanding Combat Patrol is like 40k lite. So it will have the most models and biggest board / terrain needed compared to the others. Kill team is like the 40k version of Warcry. Which has branched out more on it’s own rule set from 40k and is smaller scale than Combat Patrol. Both of them are still in the 40k settling and models from there can be used. Necromunda is on the same scale size as Kill Team. But it has its own models separate from 40k. I seems more complex than kill team but has more customization options. All games are sci fi but Necromunda gives me more cyberpunk / space cowboy vibes.
So if you want something smaller scale and cheaper, KT or Necromunda are the choice. If you already have 40k models that you can use, then you can try KT. But if you are starting fresh and like converting / fighter options, try Necromunda. Hope this helps!

I just like to try something similar but new.
After building Gundam Kits and later Mecha Musume (Robot Girls) from about 2016-2022 I moved on to 40k.
Ultra Marines specifically at first.
Now I just change armies when I get bored with any of them.
So far I've done UM, Death Guard, Custodes and now Chaos Knights.
Also Stormcast Eternals just for fun.
That's why I tend to stick to skirmish size games. I don't feel as bad collecting 100 different small armies instead of one huge one. haha, it makes sense in my head.

I did something similar. Took a two week vacation. I didn't bring and minis or paint. Got into Pokemon TCG and beat 3 video games 😂haven't played games in so long cause I was always working on something.
It’s a nice change of pace. I played a bunch of Diablo 4 and even though I like the game, I’m getting over the hype and ready to go back to hobbying.
Just a heads up Zam, the left over parts from the Kroot kit fit the older Kroot warriors bodies.. if you want to make almost all the variations. The grenadier needs a bit of extra bashing

I think often folks in our hobby forget the simplest truth: if your hobby stops being enjoyable then it’s not a hobby anymore. Piles of shame, last minute stress painting, frustration comparing yourself to award winning artists; is that how you want to spend your leisure time? Hobbies are meant to reduce stress not exacerbate it.
With adhd I understand about short attention spans. But I’m just curious because one of the common traits of adhd is exclusive hyper focus on a single thing. It’s how I get any hobby projects done. Does Zambies, or other short attention span folks, not have that occasionally useful flaw?
It’s true! And I do haha. I can hyper focus and get a project done quick if I am enjoying it a lot. The problem ends up being I never hyper focus on the project that needs to get done rather than the new one I want to get done haha.

but yeah i feel ya, i dont even play. i play battletech so most of the time i dont even have to assemble my minis and sometimes i leave them half done for weeks! ur physical and mental health are much more important than ur hobby!😊👍🤞✌
