Episode 101: Moonbeams Charity Quilt and Stitch Along with Kimberly Jolly of Fat Quarter Shop

- In this episode, Sherri and Chelsi welcome back Kimberly Jolly of Fat Quarter Shop to talk all about the Moonbeams Charity Quilt and Stitch Along. This year's Make-A-Wish charity quilt features Sherri and Chelsi's Strawberry Lemonade fabric. There is also a special navy print made especially for this quilt's background. This quilt pattern is free to anyone who wants to join along, but Kimberly hopes that everyone who gets the pattern will donate at least the cost of the pattern ($10) to the Make-A-Wish foundation. The quilt along will begin shortly after the Strawberry Lemonade fabric ships to stores. We anticipate it will begin in February or early March of 2024.
Sherri and Chelsi also ask Kimberly about her sewing routines and how she manages her personal sewing, her business, and her family time. Kimberly then shares her insights on the current state of the quilting industry and discusses some trends she sees heading into the new year. Terrific interview with Kimberly Jolly. I've tried the Oliso iron for my pet biz and was going through 2 to 3 irons a year until I got my Rowenta steam iron, so may try the iron Kimberly was talking about. I buy a lot of fabric for my biz, but as a monthly treat to myself subscribe to the fat quarter shop monthly box. The more I see the make a wish quilt, the more I like it. I made last years make a wish quilt and donated it to a hospital charity organization. They loved it.
I paid my $50 donation and can’t wait for the first block!

I’m a true crime junkie too when I sew. I hear that from so many quilters. Too funny. I just have to add that this was one of my favorite episodes. It was so fun to listen to the 3 of you chatting. It was as if we were all out for lunch or coffee and just enjoying each others company. Thanks so much for bringing us all along.
When you guys started talking about escape rooms with Kimberly Jolly I knew I had to tell you about the Escape room adventure that I nicknamed “Grandmas’s Basement Quilt Mystery” I created for my kids this last Christmas for a family group activity. I made the blocks for Edyta SItar’s Alaska quilt and locked each group of 4 blocks away in different places in my house with either combination locks or keyed locks. I then created fun interactive puzzles they had to solve to find the key or combination for the locks. There were a total of 13 puzzles they had to solve to unlock the blocks. Each of the four block groups were marked and there was a key code that they also had to put together and solve that showed where all the blocks were to be placed on my giant design wall that would reveal the quilt design. The puzzles all involved things that I had around my house from my grown kids childhood. I even made a baby quilt that had the code in fabrics that coordinated with one of the puzzles to one of the locks. It took me over 4 months of planning to put it all together and I had a ball.
Enjoyed receiving my sew sampler box for December ❤ it.

Oh I just loved the interview, I have gone to an escape room 1 time. I was afraid to open anything because I was afraid something would jump out and scare me. My daughter had to get us out.
I now use decorative duck tape to make my design boards. Pretty tape looks like fabric.

So enjoyable. Someone very close to me was teaching a class in Vegas when one of the mob cars exploded in the parking lot below her classroom. It threw her over her desk. 😮 so many colorful and scary stories.

What a great way to kick off 2024, such a fun podcast! Whaa....a mob museum in LV? That would be so much fun to visit. Sherri you mentioned that you sewing clothing for your children when they were you. I would be the first in line to buy your pattern for quilt jacket. I know you could make one that would be very stylish, comfy and fun to wear......hint hint.
This was a totally fun episode. You both do a great job anyway, but this was delightfully different.
And Sherri & Chelsi! Just order the Laurastar...it's a game changer. It's expensive and I don't have one YET but sign up for sew days at my quilt shop just to USE it. Saves 1/2 time pressing. Get the board & iron. Business expense!

I love FQS because of all the free patterns, which makes me always go to their website to buy fabric when I need it! I so appreciate Kimberly. I’m making the Snapshots quilt now with the Zinnia fabric. I’ve made so many of their patterns.
For the creative grid rulers, I thought of an idea to make a wooden box with a drawer for smaller rulers and on top of the box, raised slot holders (like square trim you would use for shelving to hold dish plates), for the larger rulers to display and for easy access. I just need someone’s carpenter husband to make it. Lol! Great interview - love Kimberly’s interview. She is just so open and funny! Great interview, I’m always amazed with Kimberly’s high energy level and enjoy her videos. I was happy to hear that trends are shifting away from solid white backgrounds. I like to look of tone on tone, or white with tiny coloured designs, this navy background is my favourite colour, I’m always drawn to navy base designs. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to your new fabrics. 👍❤️😊

I "clean up" my fabric at the end of a quilt project. I use men's shirts as the backs of pillows. But I don't want to waste the left over fabric from from the shirts so I'll take the leftovers and cot it up into the sizes I use like 5, 4, 2.5, and 1.5. Then I do the same with projects.

I love watching the Sew Sampler Box opening videos but I didn't think that I would actually complete any of the blocks so I haven't subscribed. Perhaps I simply need to better organize my time.
