TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL & HOMILY
The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.
A reading from the holy gospel according to mark. Glory to you, o Lord.
Jesus departed from there and came to his native place, accompanied by his disciples. When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. They said, "Where did this man get all this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands! Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him. Jesus, said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house." so he was not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.
The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
Well, I can't help myself. I gotta cheat again today for my homily. As luck would have it, I went to confession yesterday and I can't help it, I gotta share with you what the confessor told me. He was wise beyond his years. His identity of course I will be keeping to myself. But priests do go to confession. If there's a screen or whatever, we are obliged to identify ourselves as Catholic priests in active ministry. So, I go in and I gave a perfectly standard confession. I promise. But what I shared with him is I couldn't help but vent how annoyed I was at myself because I had to go to confession for something I haven't needed confession for a while and I expressed how upset I was for failing my own goal. And what this confessor said was, "Well you know Justin," you know he knows me. He said, "You know we don't conquer sin through sheer force of will." This is exactly what St. Paul was talking about in the second reading. It's in weakness that I am strong. We conquer sin, yeah, partially through good behavior, and repetition and all of that but our real big weapon we have against sin, it's not really our will, our determination, our choice to be as holy as we decide to be. All of that will not get you very far. It's when we conform ourselves to Christ. When we trust in Christ to lift up our spirits beyond what we can do for ourselves. That is the real secret to confession, to reconciliation, to living a life of faith that it is not my will but Christ's. In the gospel at the end we heard Jesus saying, I was he was amazed by their lack of faith, and in the ancient world and today even among the presbyterate the lack of faith isn't so much I don't believe in Jesus, it's more I believe in myself and when you believe in yourself too much you don't leave any room for the holy spirit. So today take Jesus' words to heart as well as Paul's advice in the 2nd reading accept your weakness, accept your smallness, accept your sinfulness and trust in the Lord to raise you up through the grace of the holy spirit.
