This model always creeped me out. Specifically the one in the sewers that you go through to escape in the begining. There you can actually see it while an industrial unsettling terminator-ish music plays. It looked to me more detailed compared to other corpses. The teeth most of all. Now i know why.
Yeah, those teeth always got me. That model was always way more unsettling than the other corpses and zombies.
I think it because seeing teeth without covered by lips is skary because it remind skull and mounth around remind skull with meat, and in that texture we can really see a corpse, damaged meat and teeth(closest bones what we can see)(and i forget to add earlier->) tooth ache is very hurt so when we see a damaged teeth or damaged jaw, our mind think "damaged jaw is damaged teeth, damaged teeth is very hurt, i don't want to feel hurt, get out of here" and we feel fear
@RelKier_is_jdude I doubt it, it's probably cause the teeth look unnervingly realistic and mutilated compared to everything else the most, so we get an uncanny valley sensation that in a world of mostly nonrealistic, unrefined textures this stands out, and draws our eyes. Doesn't help that the rest of the body is dark and burnt either. Sorta like attaching realistic eyes to a cartoon character. It's not scary cause " oh their poor eyes!" but cause " It is staring at ME, not the screen. " In any other media realistic eyes and teeth would be fine, but in this context it becomes a very startlingly real danger and image that your mind locks onto. That's my take anyways
@Acceleration Quanta What does look scary then?

I KNEW IT! I ALWAYS KNEW IT! Dude, I was like 12 when I played HL2 and stumbled on this the first time. It was in a small dank dark flooded hole with a hidden ammo pickup. It scared the shit out of me! Something always felt off about it. I somehow knew it was real gore from the times I had been traumatized through shadylinks on old internet forums. The the mid to late 2000s internet had no answers on the origin of the texture, so until now it's always been at the back of my head. Between then and now I've googled this exact thing before, like a lingering intrusive thought.
tbh i always kinda assumed it was the case from the start. like, they used real models for every other face, even the low res guy and the stripped combine soldier, so why wouldnt the most realistic looking face have a real model behind it aswell. thank god they edited out that eye tho, that does a shocking amount of heavy lifting.

people are so desensitized to violence anyway, it just adds to the realism. people shouldnt have to care if its based off a real image or not, its a godamn video game its just an image either way
What puzzles me most is that people seem to think this is some crazy thing. That the developers were insane for using, and even studying the image. When I can guarantee you that all movies/shows/games that have any form gore in it, has done exactly the same thing. Maybe not just copy pasting the image, but study gore content similar to that they're making for reference.

Look on the bright side, he's now part of the gaming history, forever remembered.
This wasn't an uncommon practice, especially back then during HL2's development. It's well known, for example, that Bioshock used reference photos of soldiers who suffered horrific injuries in World War One, including the concept of using gala masks to hide those injuries.
I remember this
They did it for Doom and Blood as well

@@lucre113 Except it really isn't... They didn't even use those images as a guide in a lot of cases, Bioshock nearly outright recreated the same injuries from the reference photos. The end result in the product is more or less the same. When I was a kid and I saw that model I started telling people at school how realistic half life 2s graphics were and how great of a game it is. I always assumed it was just an artists creation
same, am shocked 19 years later.
Having been through the internet more than I like to admit, for the first time seeing that player model today I can 100% say it's obviously a bit too realistic...
i think that playing hl2 has really made me feel like no other game has. considering the fact that it is not a horror game, it surpasses horror game level fear and provides a different feeling.
"Imagine you get viciously burned to death by the mafia and in death they turn you into the DarkRP hobo."
What's that? You just died in probably one of the most brutal way imaginable? Well now your a hobo! Congrats!
I've never been able to feel real disgust when looking at a photo of someone who is dead, because death sorta crosses that uncanny-valley line in which a human stops having those identifiably "human features" for me. So my brain nearly disassociates dead people from actual human beings. Videos of people dying on the other hand, and being able to see a real living person become lifeless and lose those identifiable "human features" so instantaneously really makes me feel that fear/sickness.
So this situation induces a strange uneasiness for me because in a sense i am seeing a real dead body being reanimated and characterised, which gives it that sense of living. Kinda meshing that barrier between a photo and a video of a corpse. Very strange.
Yeah, it's kind of messed up, the human mind tries to associate human features in everything, couple that with empathy it's easy to creep you out.
I have had the unfortunate experience of seeing 2 dead bodies on the road, one just face up and later one that was splattered, I also saw someone who was shot from gang violence 5 minutes before he died.
And some of this "fake" stuff stuck with me longer than this stuff.
Same. The uncanny valley is already horrifying enough, gore and the uncanny valley are one of my two biggest soft spots. There is a point of intersection between them, and it scares the living shit out of me.
I remember seeing a video of two students in Syria getting hit by a mortar grenade while they are just sitting and chatting. Watching them lifelessly falling over like sand sacks in a matter of milliseconds after they were just normally sitting and chatting is a truly horrifying sight.
thats interesting but me personally as long as there are flesh on the corpse i'd feel disgusted.different story if it's just skeleton.

I always had eerie feels when playing this game in the late nights when I was younger just from the silence and ambient noises in the background on private servers. This just adds more to it and confirms that i wasn’t wrong.
because of this, i cant play dead island 1 anymore, the screams and ambient noises gets me and there's two places in the game it has creepy random sound effects. One is near the start where you drive almost in a circle swing and there's to the right an entrance into a jungle or something. And there's this weird screeching sound effect, sounds like a mixture of a monkey + a car turning (which isnt your car because you never hear it when you turn all the other times, which is ALOT) and some other effect over it, so like 3 sounds at once. Only seen 2 posts on steam about this from years ago with little investigation, last heard it in 2021 and cant play the game anymore lmao. Another steam post questioned a scary sound at the main hotel but I never noticed this but it could be the same creepy sound effect. I remember also in Dying Light (or it was Dead island) there's this slamming door sound effect that echoes briefly, hate it, out of the blue during daylight.
I remember reading a gaming mag back in the day about something similar in the first Resi Evil, when you first enter the mansion and meet the turning around zombie, apparently the eye was scanned from a corpse
that outro is just so unsettling, the eerie noise mixed with the model that we now know has the face of a real person gives me chills.
His injuries are reminiscent to those of people who were burnt by electricity (usually by touching an exposed high-voltage wire). I highly doubt that he was “burnt by the mafia.”
maybe they used car batteries
Honestly it could be. I looked at the image and his hair is intact, so I find it difficult to believe it could've been fire.
the burnt face is pretty tame to other gore but having to constantly cross reference it would definitely leave a lasting mark
This was also the model used for banshees in Zombie Master, the best source mod that was ever made.
I think a lot of old games did this, even the chopped in half texture for the zombies and zombines have that weird flashlight look to it, some of the zombies in cod bo2 zombies also had that weird flashlight look to some of their visible injuries.

I was ab to say "Mortal Kombat did that" when what do I see?
Richter my dude you can't do this shit to me the moment I wake up
Poor guy, it's honestly sad to know this.
I was always scared of this specific corpse as a kid. I liked to wonder about who the character in the game was before he died, think up back stories or theorise from the context of all the different areas where he appears in the hl2 campaign.

Wtf are you even talking about? Do you think someone wants to get a phonecall from a random number saying "yeah remember how your father got tortured to death? Thank you for your service."
"Oh, hello, miss, remember the time one of your relatives had his face burned by the mafia 30 years ago? So, his burnt face was used as a half-life 2 asset, here's the money for it"
Looking at the image it's definitely from the 90s, it might be too late to find a name or family unless the medical book has names in it

I hope my horribly mangled dead face is used in a videogame when I'm gone.
One time I was in a DarkRP server with only about 5 other players (including me) online. I remember going into the sewer part of the map and hearing weird growling, it sounded pixelated and off-quality enough that I thought it was a sound produced by the map. How wrong I was when the supposed "hobo" skin guy starts sprinting toward me with a knife. I never went back to there again unless there were more players.
It's very weird why we never questioned how creepy the model was: It's just the darkRP hobo after all, right?
Damn, can't look at 'em the same.
I’m surprised that valve actually used an actual photo of a burnt victim in the game, crazy shit
is it tho?
pic of a dead body turned into a texture and used on a ragdoll
dead guy doesn't care for sure
and someone got paid to do it
The Dead Space 1 team did the same thing, but they actually did use the pictures, and you can see them right at the start of the game menu.

My 6th grade shop teacher had photos on the wall of real injuries involving saws, blades, sanders, or any shop equipment. This wall alone made me want to switch classes but I wasn't able to, shop was nerve-racking.
It's a whole lot more horrific to see the real thing instead of the in game body
Went and found the original image, holy shit they did a really good job making this an actual texture
where is it?

I have seen this face for years, Now that i know where it comes from theres this pit in my stomach that won't go away, I see it when i close my eyes, Valve needs to make a texture fix now.
the game is 18 years old and would also mean going through every level of hl2 and changing every instance where that model is placed
I KNEW IT. Whenever I looked at his face, especially his teeth which are obviously not a drawn texture, I got a feeling I was looking at a real Human corpse. I hate that the texture artist did this, real images and sounds of death and suffering should not touch fictional media. RIP to him, whoever he was. Thank you for making this video.
I didn't even know it was a real dead body I thought it was a skilled artist
The thumbnail being a real life guys burnt off face is genuinely crazy.
I kinda figured they looked at real corpses for reference, but I didn't think they used an actual corpse's face.
technically they didn't
they edited it

I really love your channel, you really are a fan of valve games and your videos are always quality !
Thank you very much!
you could have posted this comment on any other video but you had to put the "good content" badge on a video about a burnt corpse being used in a video game, pog
I always thought that the face on that texture was from a real image. Idk if I should be happy or horrified that I was right.
The old fast zombie model is super detailed, so it makes sense that it would be a real corpse too. I wonder if valve could get into legal trouble for any of this.
No if it was licensed or free to use for commercial purpose you can do pretty much whatever you want
I know posting this will likely get me hate, but I want to throw it out here anyway.
This is unethical, right? This isn't just referencing corpses to get a picture of how to enhance your artistic abilities, they literally edited this guy's face to use in the texturework of a for-profit product.
I see alot about whether or not the viewer or the artist can handle the gore in this comments' section, but very rarely is any concern for the man or his family brought up. Edgelord or not, how would you feel if the body of someone you loved was used like this, with no respect or permission? The very fact of the matter obscured, having to be dug up by internet sleuths?
And what was it with that guy who had a literal snuff folder on his computer? Does this not raise alarm bells?
I'm not saying that artists can't reference sensitive materials to depict a harsh subject matter. It's the lack of respect for the dead and injured that gets me; the dehumanisation that happens when people are turned into assets to make a profit.
Makes you wonder what else goes on behind closed doors.
I know it's easy to forget the gravity behind these things when we're distanced by technology, but if you're struggling to see the issue, I want you to stop and consider why that is. Just consider. Nothing else.
well i may point out that its not referencing, its the real image with some minor editing
@@TheManTheMythTheLegendConkerYes, that's exactly what I'm saying. That is the crux of this long comment.
