You should do a video on Opposing Force 2 and other previously anticipated mods. Part of me wants to talk about Opposing Force 2, Conscript, Project Borealis, working with Ross Scott on Stranger in Need and Civil Protection, etc which I was a part of. To be fair, I probably won't say a lot about Project Borealis as they should still be working on their Ravenholm demo.

I found out that Michael Smith was born in 1961. He was mostly around 41 to 42 when that reference photo was taken. He is still alive today btw!

In my personal opinion, outside of comics and John Freeman, I think he just has a very recognizable face. And appears at the most charismatic and youthful of the other models. I remember back in my gmod days there were a bunch of people that used reskin or head-swapped versions of Male_07 as their personal models.
Male_09 is much hotter.
male_07 is the best character in the half life 2 franchise, in fact, removing him from the game causes the source engine to collapse.

I'm very lucky that male_07 was the first gmod character I've ever used. I think a lost of people had the connection with him and that's the reason of his popularity.

Half-Life 2 citizens are more memorable than most characters in other games. Probably because of same models being used over and over, but It never felt weird which is a weird thing itself.
You kinda just subconsciously accept it as being a product of its time I guess
@@highwaymanF2 Yeah exactly, seeing the same character faces again and again never felt uncanny or broke the immersion for me and I guess for most of the people. I never saw anyone complain about it.
@@cranberry1992 I think it's more that some modern games have the same face for npcs by being one model while half life 2 has different variety and also supports with quotes that gives the experience and act more lively.

I'm so happy you mentioned Concerned. I read the entire thing through, loved it and was sad that it was so rarely talked about. A really good early 2000s webcomic in my books
I'm shockingly offended by you saying that Concerned was nothing groundbreaking. Many, myself included, consider it one of the cornerstones of Half-Life media. Hell, I know some people who've read through Concerned but never played Half-Life, just because it was such a good webcomic.
A comic which paralleled the entirety of HL2 and Episode 1, with even CSS thrown in there. I remember waiting for the last 3rd of the comics to come out. It was great

Exactly... very dismissive. There were even a lot of clever jokes reading back now that I missed when I first read it years ago. And retconning Frohman seamlessly into the HL2 timeline is probably not that easy.

He doesn't look absolutely depressed or battle hardened, he just looks like he could crack a joke at any moment, which for the situation makes you feel like you're hanging out with a friend
His face kinda reminds me of Adam Sandler, so he does remind me of a face I tend to see more in comedy
Honestly, having a full series of "Famous for What" with semiobscure meme characters would be a great show to watch if this video is anything to go by
I just always found this model to be the best looking one of all the "regular" NPCs, and the most natural face. I always felt the other ones either looked misformed in certain places, or didn't look detailed or natural enough. He also just stands out from the other models, out of all of them he's the only one I can vividly remember in my mind. Maybe that could be part of the reason for his initial popularity, people needed a character and this would be the most logical option in whatever content creation/mapping/other context.

I think a lot of the fandom comes from the fact he seems to be the most generic white guy, but vaguely better looking male model available in gmod. Given most if not all of gmod's userbase at that time were white teenage boys, it's pretty clear a lot of people chose him as it was the closest to how they looked irl (one of the reasons I did it as well).
I memories of venturiantale's videos and the male 07 was prominent in those if anyone watch those videos you know what I mean the channel is dead sadly but I still watch the videos because it was the first ever channel I watched at the age of 5 FYI. edit: and I am so glad the channel is still being recognized 6:54

In the raid on white forest bunker in episode two, you follow him for 5 seconds to a blast door with a hunter behind it, wich saved him from getting crushed by the door so he can get ass clapped by the hunter. I do like the minor resistance members with normal rebel skins, like grigs and sheckly from the antilion mine.

Imagine unexpectedly meeting in real life and having that odd feeling that you seen this man before but only figuring it out years later.
5:20 actually it's a bit more specific. Someone who identified as Renard Queenston (now goes by Emma Essex) created several dozen aliases for their music which was collaboratively called "LapFox Trax". Furries in a Blender is one alias. Jackal Queenston, TQBF, Truxton and Mayhem are several other "popular" ones. LapFox Trax has been renamed to Halley Labs... I haven't been following the creator since the name change. The rhythm of their music is different now, I think they've grown out of the old stuff, which is fine. Long story short it's all the work of one person. Don't worry, nobody could be blamed for missing this information. I wish it wasn't this complicated.

One thing this video does not state is the fact that male_07 was absolutely omni present in other garry's mod mediums , particularly the infamous HL2RP or clockwork servers.
I think it was a very large contributing factor to why it stayed relevant for so long afterwards.
I made that damn Male_07 bodypillow image (0:34) like 3 years ago and it just happens to pop up from time to time and every time it does it hits my like whiplash because I forget about it's existence, I know someone made it into a daggum addon but I still to this day have no idea how it got around

Thnx for your videos about Garry's mod fan lore. I have been playing this game for a long time (almost 9 years) and I really enjoyed its RUclips content in English even if I didn't understand much of what was said in them, but since not much of it was translated in Russian language most of interesting things like this Machinima about Freeman's half-brother was not available to me (in fact, Russian-speakers just didn't know about it) so you are helping me filling the gaps.
