    Many thanks for this video, I just changed the lock on my cx500, I found it easier to drill a small hole in the rivet and then screw in a self tapping screw. It was then easy to pull on the screw to remove the rivet. Thanks again for posting this video.

    Very useful video. Thanks to this, I managed to change the steering lock in a EU model XR650R. It is exactly the same with this KTM. One info. While you drill the final stage (large drill), do not have the steering to the lock position (right end). Try to have it a little more centered because, there is a possibility, the old drilled lock to go to the lock position if the steering is at the right end. Any way, if so, then drill with a little larger drill once again (let say if your last drill was 4mm, then put one 5mm and drill again at the same hole). Even if you are in lock or unlock position, the goal is the same. To break the little chrome pin that is 2cm in the lock. And lock or unlocked. this pin is at the same position. Just as the man says.
    One more thing for the Honda. You do not have to cut the pin that hold the lock to the frame with the wheel and theb catch it and screw it out. On Honda this pin does not have screw threads like the KTM. They are straight along its body. So put, nice and easy, a thin flat screwdriver between the rod and the frame and hit it. The screwdriver will be vertical to the pin. The rod then will pull out the pin. After the first thin flat screwdriver, you can use a little larger one until you make such space between the rod and the frame and then catch the rod with pliers and pull it straight out with the pin on it. It is far more easy this way.
    Thank you my friend for your video.

    Thank you very much! I ended up removing the rivet with a bottle opener (some kits seem to come without it so I saved it) and used a lockpick to turn and remove the cylinder. Nevertheless I couldn’t have thought about doing these things if I hadn’t seen you explaining how the lock works and how it can’t be opened.

    Can confirm this works Triumph Bonny 2011, locked and bashed in by thieves.
    We drilled it out 2mm, 4mm 6mm. Fell right out. The rivet pin just neded a bit of filing.
    That lock is just brass. Drill at 01.00. Sorted in 10 minutes.

    However, you just greased that lock... Do NOT use graphite after using GREASE!!! Mixing the two is almost like glue. If you started with grease, you'll want to use an oil or dry lube.

    My bike didn't have a key for the steering lock. I rode it to a local locksmiths who picked the lock and extracted it in about two minutes. Charged me £6. There was a number on the back of the lock so I was able to order a key and reuse it.

    so you can withdraw the barrel if you have the key, is that correct? my bike has fallen over while the steering was locked and has jammed it in the locked position, I managed to unjam it but I don't trust the mechanism anymore and want to replace it.

      nevermind, i managed to get it out without dremel or drilling, my 07 ktm 625 lock mechanism was a bit different though, it has a spring down inside the very bottom of the hole for the lock, the actual steel "bolt" that pushes into the steering column and had snapped away , I managed to get it out with needle nose players. thanks for uploading this video , I would have been fkd without it, cheers

    Very informative video. I watched this as my daughters cg125 has steering permanently locked. A new key she got turns the barrel and it pops out as per normal but the steering lock stays on. How is this possible? Ive sprayed with switch cleaner and the lock / barrel move freely both rotationaly and in and out so I am puzzled as to how the steering lock is staying on.

    So I failed to get the rivet out of mine with the vice grips it snapped off short so i probably end up just drilling it out such a shitty thing to happen no key from previous owner so had it put into a mechanic after ordering a new key and barrel kit from suzuki and the mechanic made a mess of the key hole now I guess I'll have to try this procedure now apart from the drilling or should I use a screw extractor instead of the drill bit?

      Hi Richard, try to see if your rivet comes out with a simple bottle opener (I used the thin one from a swiss knife and it worked like a charm).
      Removing the lock cylinder was a very easy lockpicking job: you will be alright with a lockpicking tutorial on youtube and a couple of tools dremel-ed out from the metal strip found in old windshield wipers. The drill trick might be quicker tho haha

    • @martinoconnor4314
      @martinoconnor4314 3 года назад +2

      @@TinkerBod Thanks for your reply, I think I was drilling it out while you were typing. I drilled straight into the middle of the lock with a 6mm drill bit as I didn't have anything smaller that wasn't made of chocolate. I could feel the locks internal wafers breaking up with the drill bit, when I had got through all five I just put a large flat blade screwdriver in the remains of the key slot, slightly turned it and the lock popped straight out. The locating pin was still intact but as long as the locks internal wafers are drilled through there is nothing holding the lock closed. TBH I think going for the centre of the lock is even easier than trying to aim for the pin as you don't need to be that accurate and there is no chance of even hitting the frame lug, also you don't have to go as deep as the pin.
