She made the right choice. The 300 and 400 aren't aggressive style bikes. They're so smooth and great bikes for everyone, not just beginners. The bike is VERY forgiving. You shouldn't slam the breaks but if she does on this bike she won't get into trouble or flip her over the handlebars because of the ABS. Great bike. I have the 300 and I'm happy. I don't feel a need to get a bigger 600 bike. 300 or 400 is all I would need.

Just went through all that 2-3 weeks ago. The main thing the class told me was that I need to practice, particularly tight u-turns. I have a deposit down on a motorcycle that after I have a couple of parts installed, I'll have delivered to me so I don't go on the highway/interstate right away. I'll be practicing in my neighborhood and local park parking lot and then advance to commuting to work once I feel comfortable enough. That Ninja 400 would be a great complimentary bike to the one I have on hold.

At 54 years old, I'm getting my first bike tomorrow!! On paper, I know how to ride but I don't have ANY experience actually doing it. I can ride a bicycle (LOL) and I've driven many stick-shift cars and trucks so I know the basic mechanics of the whole process. Seems to me that finding (and using) the sweet spot on the clutch is very important. I've watched several of your videos and found them very useful and informative. Now, I'm a subscriber. Thanks!!

Sorry for the late reply, time really flies! It sure hasn't felt like five months.
Due to living in Europe, I had to start off on a 125cc motorcycle. I lucked out and got one for super cheap and rode the thing every single day. There were good times, bad times and amazing times but with it I've now got enough skills to move onto a bigger bike! I bought a 2009 Yamaha FZ-6, which is just awaiting insurance before I can go and ride it. It's been quite the journey!

I'm having such a blast with my Iron 883. Setup perfectly for me and has perfectly balanced power and is such a raw ride and you can feel everything you're doing. I appreciate that alot more than I thought I would. At the same time it's not rough at all or too buzzy and vibratey it's just right and super enjoyable. I'm alot better than I was when I started a month ago but still have weaknesses I need to practice more on and other skills I wanna really hone. I will be practicing in the parking lot every weekend on my slow speed skills.

UK here. Started at age 12 in 1977, a Honda C50 in farmers fields, small roads between fields and the village i lived in. then a bike with gears and clutch, by the time i was 16 (road legal in UK), i had many thousands of hours riding bikes on and off road. i found road legal riding really bloody easy and passed my test 1st time. lots of fun for us kids when we was teens.

V similar here, 1974-77 went from FS1E to CB250K4 then CB750/4 K2. Totally natural back then, full of confidence, Now getting back onto it and zero confidence BUT the tip to practice for at least 2 days is great ie doesnt make me feel like that is abnormal so will be doing that. Years of driving cars takes all the natural balance/skill sets away, though the one thing that remains is to watch the road surface all the time and treat every other road user and pedestrian as a complete idiot.

I am actually going to be taking the msf class in October and the rider's course at the end of October. I didn't know what to expect, and I like that this video was available. Now, I'm not so anxious about what we'll be doing when we actually mount. I just pray they have a small bike for me cause I am short, 5ft. I have sat on honda rebel, and kawasaki Vulcan and those two bikes were the only ones I could comfortably get on and into riding position. I haven't seen any 400's.. maybe I will look around and see if I can touch the ground on that. Thanks for your video.

Had my first time on a motorcycle this past weekend, I bought a hornet 900 and my sisters husband has a liscence so he is teaching me and keeping the bike at their place. I had sat on bikes before and knew the basic mechanical controls, And I have driven manual cars for 11 years, got an electric moped last year on which the "clutch lever" is the rear brake, its just hand lever brakes and right hand throttle grip very easy to ride, so its a lot different not to mention gutless as I can twist to to full open and its not always picking up fast enough and hills is a struggle for the poor thing. and the moped is really light weight wise being around half my weight while the hornet is like twice my weight Im a big guy. and I cant lock my legs into the moped like I can on the hornet so its fairly different feeling and mechanically too.
I sat on the bike and I got instructions for switching between 1st and neutral, stopping and starting the engine and I just went to drive back and forth in front of the house feeling the clutch. its like a country side gravel road only leading to 10 -15 houses so no real traffic and low speed limit So he left me to just go back and forth, and turning at the ends I would have to wrestle the weight a little, and one end had like an incline going back up turning the bike around so I had to turn the bike going down and turn around and get it going back up.
I waddled it down through that tight turn and used the brakes to keep the bike from rolling away while holding in the clutch.
And It was just enough incline that I had to give it a some revs and feather on the clutch to not stall it which I did a few times, and just feel it out until the transmission caught to get it started going up. so like a slight incline hill start which I think is good practice too remembering hill start in driving school when I goth my car liscence.
So its a hornet 900 and its ofc really powerful, most any motorcycle I imagine is going to be a lot for beginners probably even down to lower cc bikes like the 400 in this video, so Im really happy for this ONE advice I got.
And that is I was instructed to default to preemptively twist my hand on the throttle so that Id be unable to give it more than a few degrees of twist from idle.
And that will be my hand on throttle position for a while at least while Im still learning and feeling it out in low speed riding and might be generally useful later too to some extent to still limit your twist range in low speeds. the few degrees I could add on the throttle I had to mean it and when the bike jolted forward it was pulling good but I stayed in controll and it didnt pull and result in me accidentally adding a whole lot more throttle input and loose control of the bike.
So just sharing that one tip with other beginners and future riders.
    Stay safe.
