  • The new Eton Elite Field AM FM Shortwave portable is an iconic radio that continues to deliver a well thought out design and provides excellent reception for the operator. All it needs is the optional leather satchel :)

Features I like about this radio:
    Speaker audio is amazing.
    FM reception is very good.
    MW reception is excellent.
    Shortwave reception is decent.
    Good build quality.
    Wide/Narrow Bandwidth setting.
    Fast/Slow tuning.
    Q. Tune button.
    Illuminated keys.
    Bluetooth.
    RDS.
    Carry Strap.
Fine tuning on all the bands.
    Full Shortwave Band.
    External Antenna inputs for FM/SW/MW.
    DX/Local Switch.
    SW Gain Control.
    Seperate Bass/Treble Controls.
LCD is easy to read with three brightness settings.
    48" antenna.
    FM Stereo with headphones.
    Gunmetal color.
    Runs on D Cells.
    Clock.
    Dual Alarms.
Features that could be added or improved on:
SSB, need I say more :)
    AM Sync.
Include leather satchel...that would be amazing.
Overall, when this radio is under $100, it is one heck of a bargain. I highly recommend this radio. It has many features that you will enjoy in a field size package.
    Thanks for watching.

I have this radio and it's very well built. I learnt a few more things about it's features from the video. Outstanding battery life - had it on batteries for 5 months before they gave out. I'm not a heavy user though. I live in a solid concrete apartment complex so I haven't been able to really explore it's AM and SW capability. One thing I don't like with these portables that have an "aux in" is that you can't switch to am or fm by toggling with a switch. You deactivate the aux by unplugging the cable and plugging it in again to reactivate. Table radios have a toggle switch capability. I'd be interested to know how this radio compares on AM and FM to the CCrane 2E bluetooth radio which is a lot more expensive. Perhaps Todd you could do a comparison?

Former avid SW listener here. I managed to score about 200 QSLs mostly through the 70s. I spent some time looking for a new radio to get me back into the hobby and I eventually landed here. I was impressed enough with your review to go out and get one of these myself even though the price has since gone up and the SW bands are not nearly as active as they once were. My verdict, like yours is that this is an excellent radio.I set up a 25 foot bare copper wire antenna in my yard and the SW reception is great. After 2 weeks , I have already sent out reception reports and I expect to see some new 2020 QSLs soon. I'm also greatly impressed with the bluetooth feature, which allows me to play music through my house from my phone with very good sound quality. Thanks again for your detailed and accurate review.

I just got one and it's pretty good with reception and sound. I'm using a Sangean wire spool antennae which really helps, but I need more for the AM band. My biggest gripe is the darn power button, as I'm always accidentally hitting it while handling the radio. It needs to be recessed and a lot less touchy. Very informative video.

I bought one of these mid-March 2020. I had gotten into the radio hobby a couple weeks before with a Sony ICF-SW22 that I'd inherited, and promptly broke. The world was falling apart, and while other people were stockpiling toilet paper I panic bought a shortwave receiver. I've enjoyed the heck out of this thing; the sound quality is amazing and FM reception is like nothing else I've ever encountered; it picks up campus radio transmissions from the low-power transmitter at the community college 11km away. Nothing of its size has any business doing that. The part of radio I'm most interested in though is Shortwave. It's pretty good at that; I can pick up Radio Rebelde, and RHC pretty well most nights indoors with the telescopic whip. But I'm curious about receiving VOLMET, Sky King, and ham transmissions; and this piece of equipment won't receive those.
I've enjoyed this unit immensely and I'm glad I own it; but if I had a do-over with what I know now, I would have bought something else.

This is a great radio. I have this upgraded model as well as the original which was also a very good receiver. The sound is excellent and great on AM/FM/SW. I don’t mind that it doesn’t have SSB. It’s kind of like today’s Radio Shack Patrolman but far more sensitive. It looks cool as well. Runs forever on batteries.

I'm glad to see that Eton realizes how important it is to supply a Class 2 (NON-switching) AC power adapter for these AM/SW radios! They are filtered so that they won't add tons of noise into the radio that can make listening to SW and AM impossible.

    • @robertscorpio8432
      @robertscorpio8432 3 года назад +3

Yes. I had the Etòn Elite Executive and was impressed that there was no noise from AC Adapter at all even on SSB - my unit lacked sensitivity a bit so not a keeper, however. Difficult to find one radio that is 4.5 to 5 stars at everything ...Etòn E1 may be the only one ....

I ordered this radio from eBay to come to the UK. Global shipping was a bit crazy, total was 163 dollars. I’ve put in some D-cell batteries, started tuning around FM. This radio picked up loads of stations, stations that I listen to on my Grundig G5 that came through a little crackly, were Crystal clear on my new field BT. Then I realised the aerial was switched to external, kind of blew my mind. I can pick up BBC radio but all areas I end up with 6BBC radio channels playing the same thing, these channels are local to counties much further away from me. Incredible FM reception. I don’t think there are many of these radios in the UK. Cheers

EDIT: Time resets when you go through channels with RDS info and happens with batteries or AC power on two different units, so is a default function. Directly linked to RDS sync but not disclosed in manual as to how to control it. Syncs to CST China Standard Time from PST where I live, no matter what the RDS setting is. I can't set the clock or alarms reliably.

I know nobody ever tests the alarm functions on these reviews. I bought a Sangean 909x because it had a Humane Wake alarm, but no one ever told me that the tones never get loud enough to wake anyone but the most light sleepers and if it's more than a few feet away I doubt that it would wake most anybody. Sure the alarm can be set to the radio, but then the volume has to be turned up louder than you would probably want to be listening to it before going to sleep. I have an old CCRadio that nothing but the alarm works anymore however that Humane Wake alarm will easily wake a sound sleeper from across the room. Does anyone know how loud the tone alarm is on the Eton Field?

Always been fascinated with radios and came close to getting my ham radio license years ago in high school, but the teacher messed up the paper work, so we were told. We met all the requirements and something went wrong on the admin end, although that was years ago. I recently bought a C.Crane Radio 3 and a Panasonic RF-2400D. I have an old Grundig World Traveler II somewhere, but not sure where it is at the moment. I was gifted a Grundig Mini 300 years ago too and that’s super portable and fun to mess with.
I really would like to get a newer radio with SW and am torn between the Eton Elite Field in this video and the Eton Elite Executive. I really like the looks of the Field with the dials. What’s your preference? Mainly listen to AM/FM but would like good SW reception.

Is there anything worth listening to on the Shortwave bands ? To me it sounds like it's all religious fanatics and dirty signals from Cuban Pirate radio. I was hoping to buy a radio to have fun while on my Atlantic crossing on my sailboat. Maybe i'm looking at the wrong type of radio.
I want to hear HAM and Weather and International Talk Radio. The AM/FM radio channels I can get on my simple Sony Transistor radio.
Suggestions ?? I dont want to spend much more then $150.(ish)
I also would like to be able to get weather GRIB data to decode on my laptop.

Hi Todd, amazing videos as usual!, whats your take on this, Eton Elite Field vs Grundig S450DLX vs C.Crane SW? I'm interested in field radios powered by D cell batteries and do everyday listening on AM and ocassionally SW when there is good propagation. What of the three radios have the best tuning experience and which of them feels less plastic/flimsy of them, the heavier the better? Does any of them comes with a leather case, maybe aftermarket one? Thanks! 73 de CX1DR

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert  2 года назад +1

I dont have experience wit the S450DLX, but the C.Crane SW is fantastic on MW. The Eton Elite Field is a champ on FM. The C.Crane and Eton have a similar weight and feel to them. Also audio is fantastic on both. If you need bluetooth, and a field carrying case, the Eton is the one to go for.

Yes, Evenings drop to the lower part of the band, while Daytime tends to the higher end. At Dawn/Dusk you will be able to hear from the bottom to the top, if Solar activity is high. A charged ionosphere lets the shortwave signals bounce across great distances.

Also wanted better reception saw a new bt eton and review claiming better signal louder speaker. I had hoped my old 550 was a lemon and battery savings would help justify new eton bt radio. Well I have been reading new bt are draining batteries when using ac also speaker was very quiet in comparison to my old 550 eton so I guess I feel it does get a bit better signal but nothing that a antenna don't fix I purchased a tecsun ng200 am antenna now that was a great buy I should have got that and not bought new radio so sending bt eaton back to amazon try another see if my speaker was just a fluke but so far spend a 140 for bt option and bad sound I also got some rechargeable d2 usb c batteries for 40 dollar on amazon so wish me luck on my replacement I hope eton didn't add bt and down grade the sound nice to hear news in morning throughout my home.

Todd,, @1:26,, Probably should have called them out for a 7V supply.. That is very proprietary.. Not cool at all.. 9 or 12V are standard.. I have an old Yaesu,, 220 (1.25cm band) radio with a 6 or 7 volt supply.. Sure,, I modified something with LEDs and a resistor.. BUT WHY.. Engineers need to all be put in stocks for a few days.. Give a kid a pencil and slide rule and they will make every repair exponentially harder.. I really would put Eton on notice after that one..
