Features I like about this radio:
Very Good FM reception.
Solid Shortwave reception with a wire.
Small Size.
Reversed Amber LCD Display.
500 Presets.
Local and World Time.
Alarm.
RDS.
MW reception is decent.
Fine Tuning/ Coarse tuning done well.
Full coverage on the Long Wave band.
Adjustable 9k/10k stepping.
Four FM Bands.
Fast seeking.
Decent Speaker audio.
Leather cover.
Gunmetal color is great looking.
Features that could be added or improved on:
Bandwidth options.
Fix the headphone experience. It is a no go atm.
Overall, I recommend this radio for those who travel and don't need to use headphones. When the price is under $40, it as a great value. You will enjoy it's shortwave and FM reception. MW has a few harmonics, but are dealt with easily when using a passive loop.

I bought one based on your reviews. It is one of my best radios to date along with my Sangean ATS-405. It took me some time to work out all of its features. The tones don’t bother me pressing buttons and I couldn’t even tell you if there is any hiss on the earphones. Popping doesn’t bother me either. They are just the idiosyncrasies of this radio. The engineering and build are like a fine Swiss watch. I can’t wait to get the Eton Elite Executive and Field radio and even the Eton Mini. Very satisfying to operate and tune in stations.
Thank you for this review Todd. It encouraged me to purchase one from Amazon (Nov 2020) and your review was spot on with one small exception. Mine seems to sound great with headphones. Slight pop only on the band change but not while tuning. No hiss and nice deep sound. Love your channel! Thank you.
Correction: I just realized that does do the annoying pop on scan. Bummer. Still a great buy!
The birdîes are probably really heterodynes from internal circuitry or nearby electrical devices. A harmonic would be heard on a multiple of the fundamental frequency. For example, a harmonic of 590 kHz would be heard on 1180 kHz and 1770 kHz and upwards. Harmonics are often caused by transmitters with bad filtering and aren't usually the fault of the receiver.

One major selling point....no soft mute on weak signals on AM. Amazon stock of several radios are running low. The Sony ICF-P26 is selling for 9 bucks...used. The P36 is nearly 30 bucks. Even CCrane radios are almost out of stock. I saw 8 Sony ICF-P26 radios for sale on Ebay as a lot for 35 bucks shipping included. They were listed as unused but without boxes. They were part of a "promo" but never used the seller said. Somebody should snap them up.
I love my Etons and I've been SWLing since 1969. I have had a lot of good and bad radios but I've never had a bad Eton. Don't know why they get a bad rap in some circles, all of mine still work as good as ever. As for headphones, I never use them so it's not an issue for me. Thanks Todd!
I think some of the ones I had trouble with were from third parties...that should sum up that story.
This is a good radio and Grundig is a quality name. I use to take it hiking, but found the Eaton Scorpion 2 is more durable, solar and comes with a handcranck.. Battery usage in both are incredible..

Your listening room seems to very RF quiet, can you give a brief synopsis of what you did to achieve this? May be a tour?
The quick and dirty, unplug everything. Surge protectors can cause RFI. Use Incandescent Lighting. No Wifi, and Airplane mode everything.

I bought this radio for $44.oo.
They didn’t have it in-store as they just sold out, so it’s coming from their Atlanta store.

This is the model I am thinking to purchase. Last month I had purchased a CCrane 2, and I wasn't happy with the quality and not happy with CCrane customer service. Therefore I am returning it to CCrane. How is customer service and quality control with Eton?

Depends on a person's needs. I like compact, easy to carry. I don't really use SSB much so my choice would be the CC Skywave, original model.

The radio is most likely made by Tecsun, and the Timer indicator is always there.

Why they never put recording features!! I still have my old boombox with shortwave that records to tapes, today's radios can do it on an sd card slot ...
Thanks Todderbert. How does one get the DAB+ band? The manual shows nothing about it except in the specs. Being able to use this in Europe would be a big help. I thought that I could find the DAB band by putting the radio in the 64-108MHz setting and in the 9kHz setting, but I still can't figure it out. Have you?
Mine doesn't have DAB. Might be another version out there that does.
@@todderbert I assumed it did because it is in the specifications. After all it is a traveler's radio. Why would they make multiple radios for different regions if the radio is meant to travel to other regions?! Very odd indeed. Not logical at all. I tried all sorts of settings and couldn't get it to receive in the DAB band.
You are also very, very right about the headphones. WOW! That is an eardrum busting "pop", even on the lowest volume. In fact, mine is doing that even with the volume turned completely down to mute. I wish I had found your video before buying it. I found your video in the hopes of solving the DAB question. I might just have to send mine back for a refund. Thanks for your videos!
Can you do a troubleshooting video on the radio. Mine keeps shutting off automatically after a few seconds. I also tried resetting it and that does not seem to work either. The owners manual is not helpful.
If you are using new batteries, then it is most likely a short on the PCB. I wouldn't know where to start, or if it is a simple fix. Did batteries ever leak in the radio? water damage, ect? items to consider when trouble shooting an issue like this.
@@todderbert No, it is a brand new unit. No battery leakage. Is there another button that needs to be held down when pressings the reset button? Thank you for replying.

I would recommend the Kaito T-1 or Sangean ANT-60 Reel Antenna. Comes with the clip on attachment.
Hey i got passed down this radio and a lot of other similar kinds of equipment but no nothing about any of it. if someone was entirely ignorant and very new to this kind of thing what do they need to go read to educate themselves on this craft?
Search History of Radio to get a start. You will finds tons of subjects on this. The ARRL.org will also be a good resource on the frequency bands.

no this one does not, you need a CC Skywave for that addition.

Howdy, i have the elite mini and looking for something with more umph to listen to on my breaks. But still fit in my big pockets. Would this radio be, the mini is fine. Just looking for something bigger that still fit in my pocket. I use a scottevest so pockets are bigger than normal but i drive a lot for work.

I just got mine yesterday. I have a question though. There is a stereo light on the display that never lights up. The manual says nothing about how to turn that on. Any idea how to do that?
It should light up when using headphones, and you are receiving a Stereo signal.

yes.
Which one is better- elite traveller or tecsun pl380? Fm and sw reception
I would pick the PL-380. The bandwidth filters on Shortwave make it a first choice for me. FM is similar, the Eton may have slightly better sensitivity.

I am leary of Eton's build quality.
I bought their Field Radio and in short order the digital tuning went out.
My next purchase was not a leasing thing either.
Maybe their more expensive units are great but my experience had not been a good one.
Ups and Downs, but mostly up recently for me. My Elite Field unit rocks, Elite Mini works fine, Elite Executive is stellar, and this Elite Traveler gets it done. But I have had my share of duds, mainly their older Grundig Editions. I have a dud of a Field BT, deaf on MW. Returned a Silver Executive Traveler, and a few Executive Satellits till I got a decent one with no flaws.
What do folks use this for in this smartphone world? (serious question)
Shortwave listening it´s kind of a niche hobby these days but it´s still a thing, and it doesn´t hurt to have another way to receive information in case of emergencies.

Only the elite part of the name, and colors are different.
Fairly okay radio, but fm reception is not so great. My nearest fm station is about 18 miles away, it can catch it. But others are around 50 miles away, can't catch signal from that stations, not even with 3 feet wire attached. So, just okay okay radio.
